How to Fix Any Issue in WooCommerce – A Step by Step Guide

Whether you’re having problems with your cart, your shipping, your payment gateway, your WooCommerce checkout, or any other aspect of WooCommerce, you can just follow these simple steps to fix most problems.

Step 1: Try to Recall What Recent Changes You Did to Your WooCommerce Site

The first step in trying to solve a problem in WooCommerce is to try to determine what had caused it. Sometimes problems arise when you make a change to your site which is why it is important to always create a backup when you make any changes. In some cases, you might not always notice the problem right away which is also why it is important to do some user testing when you make changes to your store.

Try to recall what changes you made recently. Did you change any settings? Did you add a new plugin? Did you remove any plugins? Did you add any code snippets? In many situations, you can resolve the issue by rolling back the recent changes you made.

Step 2: Revert to a Backup

Determine when was the last time your site was working and revert to a backup from that date. If the issue is with a theme or plugin conflict, however, the issue will most likely pop back when you update. Not updating is not an option. You will have to update eventually. Reverting to a backup is only a temporary solution if you need your site back working and fast.

Step 3: Update Everything

If remedying the recent changes you did does not solve the issue you are having, the next step would be to update your site. Update everything – WordPress Core, themes, plugins, WooCommerce template files, and also make sure you’re using a supported PHP version.

If you are using any premium plugin that has a subscription, make sure you have an active subscription so you can get the latest updates.

If the updates don’t do the trick, it is time to test for a plugin conflict. You’ll want to do this on a staging site so you don’t affect the functionality of your live site.

Step 4: Check for a Theme Conflict

On your staging site, switch to a default WordPress theme like Twenty-Twenty One. Test if the issue still persists. If the issue is resolved, then it is a conflict with your theme. You’ll want to pass this on to your developer to fix the issue with the theme or contact the theme developers to let them know of the issue so it can be fixed. If the issue still persists after changing the theme, then it’s time to check for a plugin conflict.

Step 5: Check for a Plugin Conflict

On your staging site, deactivate all your plugins except WooCommerce. Test if the issue persists. If the issue is resolved, it is time to identify which plugin is causing the issue. Activate your plugins one at a time. Every time you activate a new plugin, test if the issue returns. You’ll know if it’s the erring plugin if the issue pops back up after activating it. Once you’ve determined the problematic plugin, you can find a replacement plugin or reach out to the plugin developers so they can fix it.

If deactivating all your plugins does not fix the issue, then it is not a plugin conflict. You’ll have to explore other options.

Step 6: Check for Abandoned Plugins

WordPress will only alert you that you need to update a plugin when a new update is available. However, if a developer abandons a plugin or a plugin or it is removed from the plugin repository, WordPress will not alert you of this.

Over time, these abandoned plugins may stop working with future releases of WordPress and WooCommerce, and when that happens you’re going to have problems. These abandoned plugins can also become a backdoor for hackers.

WordFence can help you detect abandoned plugins. Just install WordFence and do a scan of your site. If for some reason you don’t want to use WordFence, you’ll have to check all your plugins manually. Just head to your plugins page and click on View Details for each plugin. Keep tabs on plugins that have not been updated in a few months. Odds are those plugins could be abandoned. Any plugin that have not been updated in over 6 months is most likely already abandoned. Consider removing the abandoned plugins you find and then test if the issue you are having disappears.

Step 7: Submit a Bug Report

If all the above steps do not yield anything, it could be a bug in WordPress or WooCommerce. If this is the case, the next step would be to report the bug and how it can be reproduced.

As often happens, holiday sales got in the way of me getting this ecommerce news update published in a timely fashion, so please accept my apologies as you read the latest of the most important pieces in ecommerce over the past several weeks, including news from Etsy and other marketplaces, website builders, payment processing and shipping.

In the new year, I expect to be releasing a new way for you to get the material in these updates in a more timely fashion, even if you do not follow me on social media. In the meantime, you can still get news day-to-day by checking out my posts on LinkedIn, or on Bluesky.

If you are in the US: the IRS has once again delayed [Washington Post; gift link] the $600 threshold for receiving a 1099-K from online marketplaces and payment processors. The threshold will remain at $20,000 for the 2023 tax year, and will only drop to $5,000 for 2024. You can read the IRS announcement here.

Etsy laid off 11% of its staff (225 people) in mid-December, due to stagnant sales on the site and an impending restructuring. It’s not yet clear what effect this will have on sellers in the long run. Further reading:

ETSY NEWS

Sellers in Thailand, Ukraine, Japan, India, Chile, Argentina, and Peru can now use Etsy Payments, and must enroll by January 31, 2024 or else their shops will be suspended. (This is standard each time Etsy Payments is introduced in a new country.)

Anyone struggling to upload multiple documents to verify their identification or tax information on Etsy might benefit from this trick: combine all the documents into one file.

Following up on the broken domestic pricing tool: Etsy is now refunding sellers for any sales that go through with the wrong price. (I’ve received several reports of this now.)

Etsy has been adding items to shoppers carts, usually items that were faved or even just viewed. They’ve also been adding coupon codes to shops’ backends, although I haven’t seen any reports of the codes being used. See threads here, and here, and here. So check your “Sales and Discounts” page just in case.

Etsy’s bot takedowns continue; one shop got a counterfeit strike for using their own name in their listing. No one at Etsy will look at the facts and see how ridiculous this error is, so the listing remains deactivated for no good reason. [UPDATE: shortly after I published this, Etsy finally admitted the error and restored the listing.] Other legitimate shops continue to get listings taken down as well, and the Temu bot may be responsible for some of them. If any of your images show up on other sites, you are at risk of this problem, so make sure to pursue copyright infringement claims for photo theft elsewhere.

But somehow, Etsy bots can’t take down the stuff that should be removed, namely deep-fake porn of celebrities. Forbes found a whole bunch [soft paywall]. One of the most notable things about this is that Etsy didn’t remove the listings that a lawyer contacted them about until 6 days later, when Forbes contacted Etsy about the story. I wrote more here.

Sellers in the US can now purchase UPS labels through Etsy.

MIssing Etsy Check or Karen Check, and want a new place to look up Etsy buyer’s previous reviews? Koalanda has a free tool that will check customer review records from the beginning of 2022, which is a great way to do market research as well as look up current buyers before agreeing to do custom work etc. Beware it may be missing a few records; it doesn’t show feedback I left in 2022, for example.

Etsy quietly sent Israeli and Palestinian sellers a message letting them know that some October fees would be waived, and the rest will not be due until December. Oddly, during the third quarter earnings call CEO Josh Silverman said that all October fees would be covered, which cost Etsy around 1 million in lost income. They were told Star Seller badges from October will automatically roll over for November only; it's unclear if that was extended into December.

Etsy’s colour for 2024 is “berry”, which they consider more “grown-up” than the shade of pink that trended most of the year. “[S]earches for hot pink decor items declined by 58%” in the past 3 months. Charms, denim and statement bathrooms are in, while gallery walls are already falling out of favour. Interesting piece on Etsy’s continued expansion into India.

Etsy Support continues to get worse, with one seller told that flaws in Etsy tracking integration could only be fixed if the buyer confirms via Etsy Messages that the order was received. This turned out to be incorrect, and Etsy later fixed the orders.

Etsy signed the European Union's Digital Fairness Pledge, which is about buyer rights and consumer protections. More details on the pledge here.

ECOMMERCE NEWS, IDEAS, TRENDS (minus social media)

General

Michaels’ new handmade site Makerplace is out of beta, and is getting media attention. [soft paywall; Forbes] The marketplace allows buyers to return products to Michaels stores. They are definitely aiming for makers disenchanted with Etsy. “Our research found that nearly three in four makers believe there’s a void in the online marketplace landscape today, and that existing platforms come with pain points like high upfront costs, increasing fees for product listings and competition with an overflow of mass-produced goods.”

Artisans Cooperative is holding their first board election January 22 to February 2, 2024. Candidates may submit applications to run from December 25 to January 12.

Lots of retail companies are blaming Temu and Shein for lower sales recently. Etsy and The Gap are both quoted. [Soft paywall; Modern Retail] The former is losing money with this approach. “Temu makes a loss of around 30-35 percent on each US order, and an average of 40 percent on orders globally.” Temu is also cutting into dollar store sales, and is currently suing Shein for “intimidation tactics” against businesses that sell through Temu. Meanwhile, Shein has filed for their US IPO.

While the cost of ecommerce returns has grown, some companies are allowing buyers to keep lower-priced items, instead of spending more than the price to have them shipped back.

Amazon

Amazon Multi-Channel Fulfillment fees are increasing next February, following most other carriers.

Venmo will no longer be a payment option on Amazon, as of January 10.

Amazon only places other ads at the bottom of Apple's pages, instead of higher up, after Apple asked the marketplace to remove other ads altogether.

Zulily is the latest entity to accuse Amazon of illegal anti-competitive behaviour. One difference this time is that Zulily announced the business is closing just a week before. “In its complaint, Zulily said Amazon punished sellers who used both platforms, leading those merchants to raise their prices on Zulily’s website, take some products off Zulily or stop selling on Zulily altogether. In some cases, the sellers never contacted Zulily, the company alleged.In the span of one year, Zulily lost half of its sellers who sold on both Amazon and Zulily, according to the complaint."

Meanwhile, the FTC antitrust suit against Amazon probably won’t go to trial until mid-2026. Here’s more on the claims in that case. “Amazon executives acknowledged that these policies, which included requiring Amazon sellers to have the lowest prices online or risk consequences, had a “punitive aspect.” One executive pointed out that many sellers “live in constant fear” of being penalized by Amazon for not following the ever-changing pricing policy.” As well, “sponsored ads were often irrelevant to the initial search and caused “harm to consumers" and the overall experience on the site."

Like some other companies, Amazon sells many of its returned orders off in bulk for discount companies to resell. In Toronto, that included the original buyers’ private info.

eBay

eBay’s new Payment Terms of Use introduced several changes, including potentially longer holds for new sellers, and an admission they make interest on payment money and won’t give that to sellers.

eBay had a slow third quarter, and didn’t predict the fourth Q would be any better.

US sellers of patches, stickers, decals, greeting cards and seeds can now use eBay’s “standard envelope service”, for “items weighing up to 3 oz. and a quarter inch thick”.

There may be changes to eBay search early in 2024.

I can’t wait to see how badly this goes for some: eBay releases AI tool for seller social media posts.

Poshmark

Poshmark no longer operates in the UK, Australia and India, and plans on focusing on their markets in the US and Canada.

Shopify

Shopify’s “marketplace” that has operated through the Shop app for a few years has now opened on the web. “Shopify would be the second-largest e-commerce retailer in the U.S. if all its merchants were treated as one”, but it doesn’t appear the website builder really wants to operate like that.

There are lots of SEO guides for Shopify, but this one gets into a bit more technical detail, and includes optimizing your blog pages through Shopify, Google Shopping, and international page versions (Hreflang).

Businesses using Shopify for their website pulled in $4.1 billion in sales on Black Friday 2023.

Squarespace

Squarespace got caught adding a setting that says individual site owners allow AI crawlers to use the site’s content - and they didn’t bother telling their customers.

Walmart

Third-party sellers on Walmart can now use Shippo for labels, through a new integration.

Walmart’s third quarter results beat expectations, but the stock dropped on short-term predictions of weaker sales based on the end of quarter performance.

All Other Marketplaces

Some vintage sellers are moving to District.net, either joining other communities or starting their own.

Bonanza moved to compulsory labels for most US-based sellers, and even though the company promised the lowest rates available, some sellers were not happy.

Jane closed in mid-November, surprising businesses that sold on the site, who are apparently owed around $10 million. Lawsuits are possible.

Spoonflower is changing how several things on the site work, including swatches, limits on new listings, and delisting “unpopular” items.

All Other Website Builders

WooCommerce is now woo.com, which includes all of the company’s features, including the WordPress platform the payments system etc.

Payment Processing

Businesses in the UK can now take payments through Square on their iPhones.

US businesses using PayPal will no longer have seller protection for “Item Not Received" claims filed by buyers as chargeback claims with their card issuers, starting January 16, 2024.

Buy Now Pay Later is still a thing, with Walmart Canada adding it as an option through Klarna, and Amazon Business choosing Affirm.

Shipping

Shipping label company Shippo has a new insurance that covers porch pirate thefts, but they don’t cover a lot of other things, including “Marring, chipping, denting, scratching”. The Canadian version doesn’t cover many common goods, including jewellery, antiques, art, glass, and ceramics.

Amazon’s deal with USPS has flooded some small town and rural post offices in the US. [Washington Post; gift link] “Mail is getting backed up, sometimes for days, leaving local residents waiting for checks, credit card statements, health insurance documents and tax rebates. Routes meant to take eight or nine hours are stretching to 10 or 12. At least five carriers have quit, and the post office has banned scheduled sick days for the rest of the year, carriers say.” Delays are also reported around San Antonio, Texas.

Wish is launching its own shipping service, which can be used for orders not made on Wish. Currently it will only be available for packages shipping from China to select countries.

Siren (The Vestige)

For a long moment, Lightning couldn’t quite believe what she was hearing. It had been years since she’d heard a fal’Cie siren go off, but there was no mistaking that loud, shrill, klaxon.

“Mom?” Diana tugged on her sleeve. “What’s that sound?”

Lightning said nothing. Instead her gaze swept over the crowded boardwalk as people froze. The children were confused. They didn’t understand what was happening. But the older people, they all knew what those sirens meant.

“Come on.” Lightning looked at Fang. “We need to get out of here.”

“Yeah.” Fang’s eyes were wide, and Lightning could tell that she wasn’t entirely there. “We have to go.” She picked Diana up and then glanced down at Averia. “Stay close, Averia. We are getting out of here right now.”

“But why -” Diana’s question was cut off as Fang broke into a swift walk. She would have run, but even with her prosthetic, Lightning would never have been able to keep up, and Fang wasn’t going to leave her or Averia behind.

“This has to be a false alarm,” Fang muttered. “There’s no way it can be real.”

“I hope so.” Lightning fumbled for her phone and quickly dialled a number. The Eidolon Program had largely gone into stasis since the end of the Breach War. There simply hadn’t been a need for it after the Breach had been sealed, and the money had been desperately needed elsewhere. However, there were still monitoring stations in place, and she still knew people on the inside. “I’m going to make a call.”

“Good.” Fang’s pace quickened slightly as panic began to set in. They got off the boardwalk and began to make their way through the winding alleys that would take them back to the train station. They both knew that the main streets would be full of panicked people.

“Are they back?” Averia asked quietly.

“I don’t know,” Lightning said. Averia might only have been nine years old, but she’d paid close attention to the history of the Breach War. They had closed the Breach, but there was nothing guaranteeing that it wouldn’t open one day. The bomb they’d sent through was the biggest in history, but there was still a chance something might have survived it. “I hope not.”

Her phone finally managed to get through. “Lebreau, it’s Lightning.”

“Marshal...” Lebreau was short of breath. “You’re not going to believe this...”

“I’m in Bodhum. I can hear fal’Cie sirens. Is this a false alarm?” Lightning cut straight to the point.

“No.” Lebreau swallowed thickly. “We detected a Breach almost an hour ago, but it’s taken us this long to confirm it. We don’t have as many sensors up as we used, so we had to reroute a fishing boat. We’ve got a Category V headed in that direction. Estimated time of arrival is two hours.”

“Two hours...” Lightning did a mental review of the military assets in the area. “That’s not enough time for the military to scramble a sufficiently large response.” A Category V could be taken down with conventional weaponry, but it would take days of sustained heavy bombing or the use of nuclear weapons, perhaps multiple nuclear weapons depending on the fal’Cie. “And there’s no way we can evacuate in time.”

“I know, ma’am.” Lebreau made a pained sound. “I can have a chopper at Bodhum’s airport in half an hour. You, Fang, and the kids can get out.”

“Serah is here too with Snow and their kids...” Lightning trailed off. “Lebreau... how decommissioned is Odin?”

“What?”

“After the Breach, we pushed to have the remaining Eidolons preserved and memorialised. Odin overlooks Bodhum Bay. How decommissioned is he? Is there any chance we could get him up and running again?”

“Uh...” Lebreau had to be looking up files. Odin had suffered massive damage during the Breach War. However, he’d been refurbished prior to being memorialised as a giant statue overlooking the bay. Lightning had been too ill at that point to keep up with everything they’d done to the machine, but she’d left Vanille in charge of it. And if she knew Vanille, the redhead would never have allowed them to gut Odin’s interior. She would have pushed for the bare minimum to ensure he was ‘safe’ to use as a statue. “Give me a second...”

Lightning winced as the wailing of the sirens grew louder. If people weren’t panicked already, they would be now.

“Right.” Lebreau’s voice was breathless. “I finally found the real file. It turns out that Dr Dia did what she always does - she lied and did whatever she wanted while ignoring orders from the higher ups. Odin was supposed to have his core removed and his weapons disabled. It turns out that Dr Dia filed a fake file stating the work had been done, but she apparently gave me personal access at some point to the real file. Odin’s core was deactivated, but it should theoretically still be operational - we built them to last - and while he doesn’t have any ammunition for his ballistic weapons, the Blazefire Sabre was restored to working order, as were the rest of his weapons. But after going so long without maintenance, I’m not sure how good they’ll be.”

Lightning made a mental note to scold Vanille a little less harshly for her insubordination next time. “It’s fine. It’s better than nothing. I don’t know who’s in charge of this sort of thing anymore, but you need to get in touch with them. We need whoever we can get - techs, engineers, mechanics, anybody - over here to try to get Odin up and running. I’ll call Serah. She and Fang should be able to pilot him.”

“I’m already on it,” Lebreau said. “We’ve got some retired folks from the Eden City Ark living in Bodhum. I’ll get in touch with them too.”

“Do it.”

“Ma’am.”

Lightning returned the salute as Diana and Averia looked up at Odin in awe. The area immediately underneath the Eidolon was normally closed to the public, but these were special circumstances. “It’s good to see you again.” She recognised every single one of the people here. “I know it’s been a while, but I appreciate it.”

“It’s no problem.” The mechanic grinned. “We used to do maintenance on Odin back in the day. It’ll be nice to give him a bit of a refresher.” His voice turned sombre. “Besides, it’s not like running away would help. If we can get him working again, we might have a chance.” He shrugged. “Odin has never lost a battle. I doubt he’ll start losing any now.”

“That’s right.” Odin had been critically damaged twice, but he had still won each of those battles. “When can we expect the suits to arrive.”

Her question was answered as a helicopter landed.

“That would be them now,” the mechanic said. He gestured to his fellows. “Come on. We’ll let the techs handle the suits. We’ve got work to do! I want that core up and running in half an hour or less!”

The techs with the suits ran over. They were also carrying advanced communications equipment, and Lightning set it up on a nearby picnic table.

“I hope I still fit into one of those suits,” Fang said, trying to smile. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Serah approaching with Snow and their kids. The pink-haired woman had given birth less than six months ago, but there was no way she’d refuse to get into the Conn-Pod. Refusing would mean Lightning would have to try her luck again, and neither she nor Serah wanted that.

“I think you’ll do fine.” Lightning nodded at Snow. “Can you take the kids?” she asked him.

Snow looked like he wanted to protest. He’d been a phenomenal pilot in his own right. However, he didn’t have an Eidolon to pilot right now. Finally, he nodded. “All right.” He smiled. “Okay, Averia and Diana, you two can come with me, Claire, and the twins. It’ll be fun.” He lowered his voice. “Marshal...”

It was telling that he was addressing her as marshal rather than as Lightning despite them being in-laws. “I’ll do my best, and I know Fang and Serah will too,” Lightning said. “I just hope it’s still good enough.”

“Today,” the newsreader announced. “We found out that the Breach War is not over. For the first time in more than a decade, a Breach opened, and a fal’Cie once more laid siege to one of our cities. Bodhum was attacked, and if not for the extraordinary actions of former members of the Eidolon Program, it would have been lost.”

Footage began to play. It was a mess, obviously taken from several phones, supplemented with some shaky camera footage from a terrified news crew who had been covering a sandcastle competition.

A titanic monster, the fal’Cie, waded toward the beach only to be intercepted by one of the most famous Eidolons ever built. Odin charged into it, driving it back into the shallows. The Eidolon was still decorated with the ceremonial signs and placards that had been put on him when he’d been installed as a statue along the shoreline.

“The decommissioned Eidolon, Odin, was reactivated and sent into battle once more. Piloted by Oerba Yun Fang and Serah Farron, the Eidolon engaged the Category V fal’Cie only a few hundred yards from the shore.”

The footage shifted to show the two behemoths exchanging blows so hard the water sprayed outward with each impact. A swipe of the fal’Cie’s claws shredded the armour along the Eidolon’s right shoulder before a punch from the machine staggered it. Another blow followed, a rocket igniting briefly on the Eidolon’s elbow before fizzling out. The punch still rattled the fal’Cie, and Odin charged forward to ram his shoulder into the monster’s chest.

The fal’Cie slid backward, losing its footing as it tripped over something hidden in the water. It toppled back, and Odin used the break in combat to unfurl the Blazefire Sabre. The weapon jammed half-way through transforming, but Odin barely paused before simply raising the weapon and bringing it down over the fal’Cie’s head like a club,

There was a deep crunching sound, and the fal’Cie shuddered, trying to scramble back and put some distance between them, so it could recover. Odin stumbled over the same thing that had tripped the fal’Cie, and the monster managed to retreat. As Odin threatened to fall, the Blazefire Sabre swept forward to be used as an improvised crutch.

The impact jarred the weapon, and it finally unfurled to its full length. Plasma flared to life along the blade’s edge, and Odin staggered forward almost clumsily. The first slash caught the fal’Cie along its side, and the creature shrieked in pain and fury. Its tail darted forward, but Odin managed to jerk far enough to avoid the worst of the attack. Still, the barber stinger tore a gash along the Eidolon’s right flank, and the Eidolon staggered for a split-second before bringing its sword around for another blow.

This time, the Blazefire Sabre ht cleanly. It dug deep into the fal’Cie’s shoulder, and there was a metallic howl as the servos and systems built into Odin roared to life. The blade swept down and to the left, and the fal’Cie’s arm came off in a spray of gore. Wounded, the fal’Cie tried to charge forward, but Odin met the charge head-on, driving its shoulder into the fal’Cie’s gut and flinging it back.

The Blazefire Sabre struck again, cleaving a chunk out of the fal’Cie’s chest before it unleashed a spray of caustic acid. Odin’s left arm came up to shield the Conn-Pod, and the armour along its forearm began to sizzle and melt. With a metallic roar, Odin’s battered arm wedged itself into the fal’Cie’s open mouth, halting the spray of corrosive fluid as the hilt of the Blazefire Sabre cracked into the fal’Cie’s forehead.

The monster’s knees threatened to give way as its skull fractured, and Odin twisted the Blazefire Sabre around to stab down into the gap between the plates of armour along the monster’s collarbone. The blade bit deep, and the Eidolon sawed it back and forth, one hand still wedged in the monster’s mouth as the fal’Cie flailed and thrashed with increasing desperation.

A few moments later, it was over, and Odin yanked the weapon free with a spray of gore.

It must have been the first time the newsreader had seen the footage because she had gone completely silent, just staring at the screen. “I... uh...” She shook herself. “The battle took place almost entirely in the bay, vastly reducing the possibility of casualties or property damage. At this stage, the Eidolon Program has yet to issue a formal statement although officials in both the government and the opposition are demanding that the Eidolon Program be reactivated in full and that all remaining Eidolons be reactivated.”

Some people aren’t destined for quiet lives. Lightning, Fang, and the gang are amongst them.

It just goes to show that you need luck sometimes. If Vanille hadn’t been as obsessed with not breaking any of the stuff she helped build, if Fang and Serah hadn’t both been there, or if Lightning hadn’t called Lebreau... there are so many ways this could have gone horribly wrong.

Wall-E AU let’s go...

With nothing better to do how about some backstories for the three protagonist?

Deku (D3-ku) (Backstory)

Deku or D3-ku is a custom Wall-E Unit designed by the Japanese Branch of BnL for the Asian Market.

These Wall-Es were designed after popular heroes which included heroes from pop culture and famous heroes of old.

The D3-ku was the last model ever made before the Humans left earth for the luxury spaceship Yuuei. So there were a lot less D3-ku models made before the big exodus this makes finding compatible repair parts difficult to find when out scavenging for “treasures”.

D3-ku was one of 300 Wall-E’s designated to clean the Musutafu area.

D3-ku or Deku, as he refers to himself, didn’t automatically develop a personality. Deku began to develop a personality 50 years after he was first turned on.

Through watching old segments of heroes on the big screens all over the public areas in Musutafu and the surrounding areas, Deku began to become obsessed with anything hero related.

He would sequester treasure related to any hero in secret places all over the sector he was designated to clean. He now has them all in his little trailer home.

His favorite finds were of the legendary hero from a Century ago All Might, which were rare.

His favorite All Might find was a role play child’s headband he sewed to his goggles to “look” like his favorite hero. To anyone else they look more like bunny ears.

It slowly became obvious that Deku was the only one who had a personality when he began to show human-like tendencies these included leaving work when the sun went down, making a home out of one of the abandoned Wall-En trailers, collecting All Might memorabilia, and watching old hero reels.

Deku was pretty lonely for a long time, unable to form any familial connections with the other D3-kus in his company, but continued to work beside his fellow D3-kus despite the lack of connection due to his directive.

Eventually, all the other D3-ku models and Wall-E models began to break down one by one.

200 years after the space ships left earth, the first clean up robot broke down. Eventually, Deku was the only one left. Then the problems began.

With no more spare parts being made Deku began to realize how destructive his garbage crushing methods actually were.

Designing his crushing methods after All Might’s Smashes, Deku's arms began to break down extremely fast from the abuse.

All Wall-E units know how to perform all types of maintenance and repairs including replacing broken and run down parts, like arms.

He has gone through three arms.

He’s moved to using his legs to crush trash. With most of the D3-ku arms rusted or broken beyond use he had no choice but to continue to use his crumbling arms until he can find a new pair of functioning arms.

Over 50 years later he is still looking for a pair worth using full time.

He does have an emergency pair just in case one arm stops working.

Even though it’s a hopeless tack, Deku still goes to work crushing trash. With no other options and all alone all he had left was his main directive: Clean the Planet.

He does this for 50 more years before he begins to explore more often, taking breaks for days or weeks at a time to scavenge for more All Might memorabilia.

It is during one of these hunts Deku finds another working robot, a small child companion model calling herself Doll.

So excited to find another bot, albeit almost totally destroyed but alive, he takes her back to his trailer and begins to repair her.

It takes months of searching to find parts before he can actually repair her during that time they become good friends, eventually forming a sister and brother bond.

Deku eventually finds mismatched parts from a customized battle bot that has arms and legs that look like a mummy, a new faceplate to go over her old one, a wig to replace her worn out matted hair, and a dress to cover her sensitive body part from the elements.

During “repair day” Deku was able to find a description on the side of her body while running new wires for the arm and leg and learns her true name is Eri.

From then on Eri and Deku go everywhere, including Deku’s work.

Having someone there really makes the work go faster with Deku clearing Takoba Municipal Beach Park in record time.

Deku doesn’t feel alone anymore. He’s happy now and has a loving little sister who looks up to him, but something is still missing in his life.

After watching so many hero videos, especially his favorite All Might rescue video, Deku dreams of becoming a hero like those in his films.

He tries to keep these thoughts to himself but Eri knows something’s wrong with her brother and wishes she could help him in some way.

Eventually Deku puts the dream on the back burner to focus on his directive and little sister.

That is until He finds a green plant with nine leaves in a refrigerator and his whole world changes.

Sh0-t0 (Sh0-Chan or Shoto) (Backstory)

Sh0-t0 is a Yuuei exclusive model of the Eve model designed by the BnL Japanese branch.

The newest version of Eve, he is one of four specifically designed for exploration of the Asian Continent.

The other models are the rest of the Todoroki siblings and Dabi (this falls under the Dabi is a Todoroki trope but doesn’t appear in the story)

When the siblings are getting ready to deploy one pod slot is empty the name: Tōya is dark and decommissioned.

All Sh0-t0 knows is his directive: find signs of life.

To help him with his search for life the left side of his face plate is a scanner with the ability to detect plant life. He has the ability to use fire and ice with the ice side acting as an emergency cooling when the heat of his fire becomes too much.

He doesn’t like his fire side and only uses it when enraged.

Mainly he uses it to destroy big objects and let off steam from the frustration not finding any signs of life.

Shoto mainly uses his ice side to handle the most dangerous situation. Though he can only use this ability for a limited amount of time before the water stored in his right leg depletes and he has to return to the ship that brought them to earth to reload. The water on earth is too toxic for his delicate systems.

Shoto has the most personality out of all his siblings having been deployed most out of the three remaining Eve models and having been deployed more often to the planet.

When deployed, Shoto loves to fly in the air making loop-de-loops and breaking the sound barrier.

The fast he goes, the fast he believes he can get way from the ship and the blackness of storage the Eve models always go back to after another failed mission to find signs of life.

Shoto hates the ship with all his being, if he could he would disappear like his fellow Eve model Tōya in a second, but he understands the goal of the directive he’s been given: to return humans back to the planet. He could never deny the humans the chance to come home just because he wants his freedom.

The siblings have been deployed once every five years and are left to search the continent for a year as decreed by the main directive of BnL's recolonization plan before returning to the ship.

Shoto does not like the Autopilot, at all.

Shoto knows the Autopilot Endeavor likes him the most because between him and Tōya they are the strongest Eve models if danger were to arise not only on earth but on the Ship Endeavor can take control back by force through them by black mailing Shoto with the safety of his siblings and everyone on board the ship.

Shoto knows the Captain is not in charge of the ship, Endeavor is.

What Shoto hates most about returning to the ship is the reports.

Oh God the reports! Every time they come back their memory files are probed for information on the progress of the earth’s rehabilitation it is one of the most degrading and painful processes Shōto and his siblings experience.

Every time they come back as a failure they are either upgraded or their parts are taken away and replaced with new parts diagnostics designed.

Shoto always gets new parts and upgrades, it’s how he got his screen scanner.

Earth is his safe haven, far away from the ship and Endeavor he’s free at least for a year.

This time around his directive takes him to Japan, the first time he’s ever been there in almost 700 years.

Shoto is excited since he hasn’t seen the island country in so long and wonders how much it’s changed. He’s ready for a change in scenery.

E.ri (Eri) (Backstory)

Eri is a small child companion robot designed to be a young child’s best friend or a child replacement for couples who can’t have children.

Unfortunately, Eri never became a companion or replacement child instead being abused and used for nefarious purposes.

Much of her early life she was passed around being upgraded and customized to the point of numbness.

She forgets who she was and what her main directive is anymore. She becomes a blank slate.

The final nail in the coffin being the removal of her original faceplate for a cheaply made custom faceplate. She is a Doll.

Doll doesn’t remember when she is thrown away or for what reason, perhaps her last owner didn’t want her anymore or the space ships didn’t allow for companion bots. Either way she is thrown into the trash.

She lays there still alive waiting for her final deactivation but it never comes.

Eventually scavengers find her and take some of her parts, her arm and leg for their own purposes. They don’t care if she’s still activated. She’s just a machine, a blank slate.

She remains that way for centuries until her hero comes in the form of the last D3-ku Unit, her big brother Deku.

At first she couldn’t understand why anyone would want to save her. She’s no good, trash, he should crush her like the trash she is and move on with life, but he doesn’t.

Deku cares for her and loves her like no one has ever done before. Deku’s patient with her and waits for her to make the first move.

Deku doesn’t see the machine she thinks she is, Deku sees a person who just wants to be loved. Just like him.

Deku brings her toys and stuffed animals, her favorites are the bunny rabbits especially when they are a little different, a missing eye or has unusual patterns, just like her.

Eventually, Deku comes back to their little trailer home with a new leg, arm, wigs colored close to her original hair color, a pretty new red dress and most importantly a new face plate. Deku offers her a new start.

Deku asks her if he could try to repair her and make things a little better for her. Deku knows he can never fully repair the mental scars but he can help her move forward.

She says yes.

Repair day, from then on they celebrate like it’s a human birthday, in a way it is for her. That day they learn her true name is Eri.

From that day on Eri begins the long road to recovery and healing. Eri doesn’t trust humans anymore, however, and may never trust them ever again.

Eri and Deku form a strong bond from that day on. Eri goes to work with Deku helping him where she can or being a friendly presence for Deku.

Their favorite thing to do is go exploring, which they do once a month and always on a Friday.

They always come home with little goodies for their collections and watch hero rescues and magical girl animes all night long.

Sailor Moon is her favorite.

Despite how happy Eri is now that she has found a family, a brother, that loves her she still worries about Deku. Eri knows he wants to be a hero like All Might, but to her he’s already a hero.

Deku saved Eri after all.
