one thing i really love about sandman is like. there’s a lot of anthology issues, yeah, and a vast variety of separate storylines, or stories we explore for just one issue and then don’t come back to again. but the characters, the world, all seems to be one vast connected network

like, take 24(/7, in the show), yes it’s about dream getting his ruby back, and about john dee, and it’s easy to look at the characters we spend the most time with in that story as a hypothetical tragedy, something self contained

except judy was friends with rose, and what happened in that diner stays with rose, informs her view of the world

and judy’s girlfriend, donna, ended up leaving town and changing her name after, and moved in with a new woman, who became barbie’s downstairs neighbor, and they get a whole story together

or how most residents of the dreaming were originally minor characters from somewhere else in the dcu that neil gaiman borrowed and refurbished, or the fact that a lot of characters in sandman just show up, in places that aren’t their story, where they have only a stranger’s impact on the events, but they’re there

we meet thousands and thousands of new characters over the course of the sandman story, but you can trace pretty much all of them back to this web of interconnectedness somehow, they know someone who knows someone, because no story exists in a vacuum, and neither does anyone’s life, we’re bouncing into and out of each others’ lives constantly and influencing how we all tell stories, and their outcomes

and it’s just a really fun little detail

I just watched The Sandman 1x05 "24/7"

like that entire episode was so well written and arranged im losing my mind about it. the way everyone has some sort of underlying tension covered up by social niceties, slowly being revealed as john forces them to act on their desires. the horror as everyone realizes just what they're capable of and how much they can hurt each other. the three women turning into the fates at the end. god. sandman really is getting better and better with each episode

yoooooo ok 24/7 was the slow and brutally tense character-laser-focused pacing i've been craving holy shit ok yeah ok yeah wow. and again the way having read the series a good 15 years ago is kind of adding to the experience? bc i couldn't remember in specific detail enough to anticipate every moment in advance, but as things happened, the dread of unfolding memories started to build on top of the building dread of the narrative itself?

so that was something!

In this week’s Sandman conversation review, a man walks into a diner with a ruby… Read on as we disembowel, dismember or otherwise dissect the events of The Sandman episode 5, “24/7.”

Natalie: Weirdly, one of the criticisms of the Sandman series in its first few days of release was “too clean and sanitized” image wise. People were citing both Constantine and Dee as examples. Has this been a problem for you?

Brittany: No, it really hasn’t. I think for Constantine they went in a new direction and the core of the character was there. Same with John Dee. There are elements of Dee in particular that are captured in ways I can’t describe — for example, how Thewlis is able to take the shakiness of the text bubbles and infuse his voice with it under that proper, perfectly mannered delivery. The wide-eyed silent observer is on full display here in this episode, but there were moments that, for better or worse, were sanitized. I don’t think I needed Thewlis on a table, naked, with the word God written in blood across his chest. I got the gist without it.
