All stories are recycled and all stories are unfair. Many get luck, and many get misery. Many are born to homes with books, many grow up in the swamps of war. In the end, all becomes dust. All stories conclude with a fade to black.

what book is ur underrated fave?
I don’t want to say underrated because it quite literally won a booker but I’ve never seen anyone else talk about the seven moons of maali almeida not even the queer representation brigade given the protagonist is a loud and proud bisexual whose relationship with a man is a key component of the story…

"You want to ask the universe what everyone wants to ask…why are we born, why do we die, why anything has to be. And all the universe has to reply is: I don’t know, arsehole, stop asking"

The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida by Shehan Karunatilaka My rating: 4 of 5 stars Maali Almeida is a war photographer who is also a serial cheater, has a terrible relationship with his mother and in general didn't lead as good a life as he could have. After his death, he wants nothing more than to make sure his photos are found, knowing they could cause an earth-shattering break in the Sri Lankan media. There are a lot of great things about this book, from the way life after death is described to the second person perspective to the way that while Maali continues to insist he really wants to have his work seen to be able to let go of his past life, he needs his photos to be seen, but in actuality it seems more as if what he needs is to make sure the people he left behind will be alright. This is a really wonderful book and I can't recommend it enough. View all my reviews

We must all find pointless causes to live for, or why bother with breath?
Because, on reflection, once you have seen your own face and recognised the colour of your eyes, tasted the air and smelled the soil, drunk from the purest fountains and the dirtiest wells, this is the kindest thing you can say about life.
It's not nothing.

The chains are hung from the door, some are string and some are twine. These were your spares. A peace sign, a cross, a yin and yang, and an Om. Not present are the golden Panchayudha, the cyanide capsules stolen from dead Tigers or the wooden ankh containing DD’s blood, from when you made that silly oath in Yala, back when every day felt like a holiday. Both were around your neck when your neck was finally snapped. Your neck was snapped? By whom? Who said that?

"Even the afterlife is designed to keep the masses stupid... They make you forget your life and push you towards some light. All bourgeois tools of the oppressor. They tell you that injustice is part of some grand plan. And that's what keeps you from rising against it."
