HELLO FELLOW SPLATLANDIAN, LITTLE "COLOR THEORY" LESSON HERE

In today's episode ? The symbolism of the green//pink theme in Splatoon

Okay so it all goes back to the great turf war. It seems to have been the first ever color picked, representing octolings vs inklings. We all obviously know that inklings won, pretty unfairly, and octos were pretty much forced to step back. Ever since, the green//pink and inkling//octo themes have been omnipresent in the Splatoon universe.

In Splat 1 comes Callie and Marie. They are not opposed as octo vs inkling, yet pick a side in a Splatfest (Octopus vs Squid, won by Callie, on the 10th of October 2015, Squid side), and end up opposing to each other, as Callie vs Marie. The outcome is clear, Marie wins, Callie is sad about it, and joins her pink theme by joining the octo troups (I'd REALLY like to know how the pink//green theme would've been handled if she won). So yeah, the Squid Sisters give us a continuity that Splatoon 2 MASSIVELY used LOL.

So let's continue with Off The Hook, shall we ?

First of all, can I point out the fact the colors are not the exact same bright pink and green we knew this far ? Yes ? Alright thanks. MARINA RAN AWAY !!! SO SHE'S GREEN !!! You have no idea how I love the entirety of these colors symbolism, reader. But yep, Marina is obviously green because she rejects her past, as seen in the Octo Expansion logs. Also, her color ressembles very slightly sanitization. A mutation. You following me this far ? I find Pearl being pink actually adorable, her color isn't THIS muted. It fits Marina, and also implies hey, no octoling racism here. Zamn this making me tearful.

Continuation to the green//pink linked to squid//octopus is this. I REALLY love the possible yin yang reference with the shirts btw. We think inklings are so good and perfect, but maybe there's evil within them, to the opposite of octolings, who are actually not as mean as depicted by Craig. I'll also point out the inkling in the poster is smiling, fist clenched, confidently, as the octoling is a bit less self assured, looking concentrated. The need to win for their nation, teehee okay sorry I'm reaching :3

Oh you knew it was coming you DEFINITELY knew. Yup. Agent 24. To me they sign the end of this stupid "inkling vs octoling" war. 3 first saves 8, 8 then saves 3 and Craig (And Inkopolis but yeah LMAO.) To me it really means "This is where we end the fight", 3 sees the potential in 8, and doesn't see them as an enemy nor a threat, but a partner (NOT ROMANTICALLY SPECIFICALLY, you ship who you want, but they do seem like they respect each other). Splatoon 3 doesn't return with pink//green, or inkling//octoling. We can play an octoling, who fights octolings, to protect octolings. Our ink is just yellow, we fight non octo bosses. We fight along Octavio. The band is red, yellow and blue, the primary colors. Harmony, although their principal song's called Anarchy Rainbow. All colors mixed together :'0

Splatbands Idol AU Part 1 - Ichiya and Namida as The Squid Sisters

Thought I’d finalize my designs for this idea (it’s not really an “AU” despite the title bc the designs are kinda the main focus) where the main bands and idols for each game swap roles. So OTH are Wet Floor, Deep Cut are C-Side, and ofc, the Squid Sisters are Squid Squad. Ichiya and Namida specifically, since I like to think of them as a duo and their colors even fit Splatoon’s main colors of blue and orange!

feat. some kinda lazy art bc I don’t rlly wanna do lineart esp since I’m gonna have to draw the other two groups as well lol. Pretty happy with their designs tho, I think I fused them well.

Even tho this concept is mostly focused on the band characters, this does mean that the idols take their place as well (along with the other band members, so the main band of Splatoon 1 is now Callie, Marie, Ikkan and Murasaki). It gets kinda confusing if you think too hard about it (esp for OTH lol) so we’re just not gonna do that. It’s mostly so I can draw the band characters in cute outfits lol

Anyway Meet Squid Squad! Here to bring news, music, and splatfests to a plaza near you.

The Squid Sisters have a decent amount of story, and although I’m already said in going to worry too much about that, it is pretty easy to merge the squid sisters and squid squad’s stories together, so why not? Instead of growing apart in Splatoon 2 they full on break up, but then get back together and instead start to use pseudonyms (Agent 001 and 002). Guess that means Ikkan and Callie are chill but just distant.

Their personalities are the same tho. Ichiya is still an asshole in Splatoon 1 lol. Maybe not really on the news, but you can see it in Octo Valley for sure. And then I bet He’s nicer in Splatoon 3 but his first reaction to C-Side is definitely not “I love them”

As for Namida, she’s a lil less smug than Marie, but she’s still the more sarcastic of the two, both on camera and off. She’s a little relieved that Agent 4 never heard of Squid Squad and feels weird about being called “boss” all the time.

They both play their instruments on stage during splatfests along with singing, kinda like Marina in We’re So Back. All their songs minus Calamari Inkantation are Squid Squad songs with a more pop-like tinge. (Ikkan left bc he didn’t like all the pop Callie was writing lol).

oh yea and have to mention they probably are agents but they’re not related idk how they’d know captain cuttlefish. Or maybe captain cuttlefish is someone entirely different! Who knows!

Once again this is more of a fun concept than a fully fledged AU. None of these confusing or vague things are gonna get concrete explanations, I just like speculating abt this type of thing.

Ink burns headcannon

So ink burns are a common Injury in splatoon, they occur when an inkling or octoling is shot repeatedly by a single ink color in a single part of their body. This happens due to the different color ink burning into their skin so much that their own ink can't fully fix that part of them. Leaving a burn mark at the area in that color for a while until their body can flush it out.

It's a low level injury most of the time. It's mostly is just a sore and irritable area on the inkling/octoling. It may hurt to touch or cause slight pain when moving that area depending on how big the burn is. Most people get it playing Turf either by getting splatted a lot in a single round or fighting the same color repeatedly. This is why teams try to change color each round. It's also why splatfests have a high amount of ink burns reported during and after them.

Treatments are pretty simple. If you see a burn appearing [1st degree ink burn] try and avoid fighting that color if possible, or avoid getting shot in that general area if the first isn't possible. If it's already burned into the skin fully [2nd degree], it's recommended you stop playing Turf or whatever ink related activities you're doing though if you're careful you should be fine. At this degree you can wash the area with cold water to help cool it (ink is hot after being fired) and wash some of the forgin ink off. It should disappear in about a day or two. If the burn is becoming a darker shade [3rd degree] it is very highly recommended you stop whatever ink activities you are doing immediately (if a squid-force employee notices you trying to play with this degree burn they will stop the match and force you to stop until it's gone) at this level pain will become highly noticeable and the burn may take over a week to fully dissappear. To treat effectively wash the area with cold water and try and keep it on ice. If possible try not to strain that part of you too much. If you see a very darkly shaded ink burn [4th degree] stop all ink activities immediately, no matter how important you think they are. Further damage to that area could cause nerve damage, sometimes permanently. At this stage the ink burn will be penatrating your muscle tissue and can make it difficult to move that part of you without large spikes of pain. This degree of burn, depending on how bad it is, could stay for years or sometimes forever (though the pain will lessen over time). As for treatment, it is highly recommended you check into a hospital to reduce risks. If you are unable to for any reason (like trying to hide agent work for example) try and submerge the area in cold water while as soon as you can, of course, being careful not to submerged too much and end up splatting yourself. Avoid using that part of your body if possible wear and tear will only make it worse, applying disinfectant is also recommended as burns this deep can cause bleeding and Lead way to infection. After you do this bandage the wound and try and keep it on ice whilst straining it, after you think the area is fully cooled down make sure to eat and drink plenty while getting lots of rest while your body works to restore the damaged area. This degree of inkburn is very rare since most people stop playing after 3rd degree, the leading cause of this is high acidity Ink (I will explain in a moment) but aside from that Splatfests are the leading cause.

High acidity Ink, this is ink that that has a higher acidity level than normal. Certain people are born with this type of ink and it can carry down by generation. This ink hurts more to be hit with and causes ink burns easier, people who have it are mostly the same as other inklings/octolings though it is a common belief that high acidity Ink makes people both stronger and more irritable though it's never been proven. This trait is seemingly more common in people who evolved from venomous species of cephalopods. The octarian army considers ink acidity when choosing front line troops and when promoting solider to elites, leading to a majority of Elites having high acidity Ink and being more dangerous as a result.

Extra info

-some of the top level turf players have prominent ink burns from their years of battle.

-Agent 3's scar is technically an ink burn, since they had sanitized ink latched to their face for a long period of time and sanitized ink is the highest acidity ink known. (the degree of Burn caused is dependent on what you think.)

-Agent 4 and 3 (in my versions) have multiple ink burns due to the high acidity Ink of many frontline octolings. As does 8 due to the Metro

-4 is more proud of her scars. Seeing them as proof of her strength. 3 is indifference about it (except the one on her eye which she hates). 8 doesn't like how they look and tries to hide hers

- ink Burns during splatfast are so common they often have tents set up on the edge of the event for the pure purpose of treating them

-chargers and splatlings are the weapon that causes burns the most

- ink burns on someone's tentacles often end up sinking down to the ends of their tentacles if they occur often enough it can lead to noticeable amounts of that ink at the end of their tentacles.

springfest just got announced, and im pretty sure i know the theme.

so before i say my theory i want to tell what i think the theme is so that none of you have to read the whole thing to get it. i think that springfest's theme will be flowers vs candy vs eggs. i think shiver will be team flower, frye will be team candy, and big man will be team eggs.

lets analyse this image.

evidence for flowers:

flowers have an obvious connection to spring.

in the top right, there's a squid licking a lollipop

alongside the edges of the image there's tons of small jellybean symbols and sprinkles

candy has a connection to easter, which occurs in spring

we know that this is a splatfest tee becayse every cephaloling in every image is wearing a tye-dye style tee, and the tye-dye shirts didnt appear in the gear announcement

on the bottom of the statue's bonnet is a strange pink symbol and a fish symbol. both have small flower markings.

the statue's base seems to be a giant eggshell

hanging off the bottom of that eggshell are smaller eggs in the splatfest colors

this image has a lot of the same evidence as the first image, with the addition of the pink pinhole shades having jellybeans and sprinkles in the lenses.

in the back are three ink splashes. in order for left to right, its green, blue, pink. assuming the ink splashes are in accurate order (as in when we get the actual theme announcement the order of colors will be the same), that means shiver is on the green team, frye is on the blue team, and big man is on the pink team.

shiver has already been seen with green tentacles, and ive already said how i think green is team flowers because of green's association with plants. we already know for sure that team eggs is guaranteed and its ink color is pink, so big man is on team eggs.

that means frye is on team candy, the blue team. this makes extra sense because frye was on team sweet. if anybody in deep cut was team candy, it would be her.

as such, i believe the splatfest theme is flowers vs candy vs eggs. i think team flowers has green ink and is repped by shiver. i think team candy has blue ink and is repped by frye. and i think team eggs has pink ink and is repped by big man.

Top 7 idol list?

I was saving this so I could draw it at some point but oh my god I am SWAMPED and can't see myself with time to do it so top list umm.

1- Shiver. I think this is self-explanatory. I love Asian women so much (I'm Asian before anyone starts raising any eyebrows) and her personality is so funny. She's incredibly theatrical and dramatic and has this big persona that she puts on that falls apart SO quickly when it comes to her friends but otherwise she is fierce!! A force to be reckoned with!! But also a sopping wet little guy.

2- Marina. I love women in STEM I LOVE women in STEM so much. My two immediate draws are like... Traditional-looking Asian woman and Smart Woman so. Marina is such a fascinating character and it's always a shame to see her so heavily uwu-ified, she's super smart and she has a lot going on besides just her attachment to Pearl!! But TBH her attachment to Pearl is part of what endeared her to me. Girl who has experienced The Horrors and is kind of a living supercomputer becomes sappy mush when Girlfriend Flashbang. She was also the one who lowkey got me into Splatoon simply by being the prettiest Nintendo character I'd ever seen as a kid.

3- Pearl. I hesitate to put Pearl above Frye because really they're super tight in my head but the only thing that knocks her up a peg is that her dialogue is a lot more fun for me to write in English (Frye talks really interestingly too! She genuinely speaks like an old man in the Japanese but that's just not reflected in the English). I love her so much because at so many moments where she could choose to be snarky or witty with Marina or anyone else, she always chooses kindness and she's always so supportive in her own spunky little way. She's so genuine and fun and silly and self assured and confident and she's so COOL. I hate drawing her hair though. I actually used to kinda hate Pearl as a kid because I fell for the forehead propaganda but I know better now.

4- Frye. LIKE I SAID in my head Frye and Pearl are tied. I love Frye she's such a sweetheart and she has such a fun fierceness about her. She cares deeply for her friends and she keeps her cool the best out of all of her friends in Deep Cut and she DANCES!! Her character design is one of the most interesting designs I've had the pleasure of drawing a shit ton of times and despite being team Shiver nearly every time I get really sad whenever she doesn't win Splatfests :( She deserves it (and tbh I think she deserved to be the leader of Deep Cut but don't @ me on that)

5- Marie. I wish I had more opinions on Marie but given that my earliest hands-on exposure to Splatoon was Sp2 when my friend used to let me walk around as her Octoling and play a little bit of Salmon Run (lost outpost my beloved wherefore art thou) and I've never played Sp1 or 2's campaign I can't really say anything about her other than I think she's really pretty. I think she's often characterized as the more flippant and low-energy one which is a cool thing to see in an idol (who are typically meant to be all smiles) but she's also really silly! She cracks a lot of jokes in the Sp3 campaign!! She's also just really cool and really pretty and white is one of my favorite colors

6- Big Man. LISTEN!!!! I LOVE HIM I REALLY DO BUT Frye-Pearl are soooo close together in my head and I feel only a little less strongly about him than Pearl but I really really love him. He's a blast to draw and honestly he's a lot more fun in the Japanese since Frye and Shiver have extremely thick accents and he's the only one who talks like Just Some Guy. He helps reign them in but he can rarely control them. He's such a lovable little dude.

7- Callie. Love the girl but I've never once resonated with her. I don't do well in the way of happy-go-lucky fun types but I don't hate her! I think she's got a lot of room to be interesting. My friend characterizes her with some flaws relating to like. Octarian prejudice which I think is pretty dope. And I'm not a huge pink fan... But I WILL say she is one of the most fun to draw.

You know what? That was a FUN splatfest!

The fizz bangs changed my rolling strategy quite a bit, I liked their inclusion. I hope future Splatfests either bring it back or have additional wacky gimmicks like that.

Off the Hook was SO back! I missed Inkopolis Square so much and seeing them performing both songs for Splatfest was awesome. Color Pulse 24 wasn’t nearly as bad as everyone was complaining it was once you could hear it in-game. It worked for the enviroment. And it was really cool to see the new animations for the new song “we’re so back.”

And for the splatfest themes this time around I felt like they were all good choices with no one necessarily getting unfair advantage over the other. Drums, piano, guitar? All are good choices! I picked guitar but I have no qualms if I end up losing to the other options cuz they’re all fair game imo.

The tri-color battle stage was actually pretty evenly balanced this time too. I felt like despite having such a small space and an open floor, the defending team had an easier time defending, while opposing teams were kept fairly isolated from one another cutting down on accidental friendly fire.

The after splatfest song is “into the light” which is perfect for this particular hub world!

Overall this was a great splatfest! I had so much fun playing! I hope you all did too! Now to wait for the results!
