Gather round, children, for the legend of Grimwood Abbey

(that’s the tiny pre-MCC I mentioned the other day. I only came up with this concept, oh, over a year ago. Dropped it to play a nice easy modern Megahood. I don’t have much wherewithal.)

...so I have spent two days on the weekend so far just working on getting my CC sorted out so I can consider starting this. Yesterday the big issues were a. realizing it was super inefficient to delete stuff in-game one by one even though it’s nice to be able to see it, and becoming paralyzed with indecision about whether to take the time to hunt down unidentified files by hand, or continue spending time deleting dozens and dozens of recoiled by hand… eventually I did a little of both, but boy I gotta use some kind of tooltip renamed now huh… b. I am not good at Delphy’s Download Organizer. I don’t understand it. Why is there no “how to use” documentation. So then I set it to scan for orphans or duplicates, stare hopelessly at the results unable to figure out what is the best course of action, and then quietly quit it to yet again… move files around manually. Don’t get me wrong, I was able to use it to shove several file types into correct folders, but my real issue would be so easily solved if there was a thoroughly explained duplicate scanner that I was able to trust. Ugh, I probably should have started by moving all the files to one big folder and sorting them from there but WHATEVER.

Because, you see, like many simmers, I have been collecting my cc since roughly 2004. I legit cannot remember if I have lost the whole thing and had to start over, but this collection can certainly be traced back to my first laptop that could run the Sims 2. For the longest time, I merely collected a big pile of everything shiny and cool that caught my eye, resulting in a big mixed-up mess combining modern and medieval fantasy and sci-fi and random fandoms and steampunk and everything I ever enjoyed. That… was not sustainable. I tried keeping individual folders within Downloads for specific genres, with the idea that I could swap them in and out for different hoods. Alas, that was too time-consuming for my taste, and I ended up with the same basic downloads folder but very lightly sort of organized but not really.

Sometime within the last ten years, I started trying to cultivate different downloads folders of broad genre categories, all neatly saved on a big flash drive. That’s all well and good, but copying and backing up that shit took away precious hours I could be using to play. Not only that, but it was very rough trying to separate my downloads folder properly—some stuff worked well for multiple genres! So I ended up making copies of the whole downloads folder to build these alternates, which I could then whittle down to only the stuff I actually wanted in there. This medieval alternate downloads folder therefore also contained the folder I’d labeled Medieval CC in my last attempt at organizing, and just to be sure I copied everything over and back repeatedly. And you know how it goes—every time I got excited about the idea of an MCC, I had to go out and download anything new or shiny. And oh yeah, had to stock up on defaults because now I could be using a solely medieval downloads folder! And this new CC would get plonked right into the DL folder, nary a care for organization because I needed to play before I lost interest!

So I had at least two, possibly three copies of all the same content in a collection of medieval CC that’s been building for, let’s call it 15 years more or less. I can’t trust the download organizer—like sir are you showing me all of them? do I throw all these out or leave one behind?—and doing it by hand is extremely tedious, carefully removing all txt and preview files to improve my load time. And actually playing a year-old story concept is delayed yet again.

I’ve got a Megahood set up that I can start converting to medieval whenever I get my act together, and I still that that sounds like fun but also waaaay too big a project for me (latest issue: wait if the capulets and montagues are traditionally alike in dignity is it wrong to make the Capps gentry and the montys merchants? But if I make them both gentry it’ll be an entire damn subhood of nothing but gentry!). I also have the same old MCC hood I started building a year ago, restarting after years of having the concept ready (this one is Algary and it is the one i was building a castle for; it has a few interesting rolled families to start with such as the gentry family having no sim older than teen and me choosing to set that up as the direct heir and some cousins, and a peasant family that involved two elderly ladies who were in love and joined households after their obligatory husbands died, pooling resources to care for their families, but one of them was gonna feel obliged to head off to the church and repent while the other cared for the kids and became a midwife). And then there’s the new guy, Grimwood Abbey, whose concept is only a year old but I sure hope I can follow through on it because it is quite small. Even then I can’t decide yet whether to start with one household (everybody living together for protection!), two households (the church vs the knights), or several households (each knight beginning in their own household with their squire). The latter would make it easier for each knight to earn their own money and compete to purchase gentry approval from the church… but idk.

Anyway. After all that I am really hoping I am about ready to actually play a bit. Even just making some sims and buildings. Today I need to progress further in weeding out CC, try to find a way I can do that more efficiently, maybe find some nice standardized set of makeup and default eyes and skin to use rather than the haphazard collections I barely touch (I prefer to lean toward maxis match over Shiny Realistic skins where everyone has auto makeup, but I’m sure there is something nice out there that suits my needs), and I unfortunately saw some nice medieval clothes I don’t have while downloading a whole fresh set of Sun&Moon Star Factory stuffs (which, I had multiple copies of! Didn’t know what was updated and what was outdated or what! So I threw out everything I had and re-downloaded the entire collection, which may have been a bit drastic but it definitely worked. Also, why is there no complete user guide for this. A “how to get started” or something. Whatever.), so I also gotta download that. Then maybe I can make a test sim to make sure defaults and stuff work okay, and then maybe download some medieval lots to speed up the building process? And then I can play one of my various hood concepts finally actually? Maybe?

TLDR: I am getting frustrated because I have so many downloads, many of them duplicates within folder within the main folder, that it’s taking me all weekend just to straighten them out (and even then I might not be able to finish, despite it being a 3 day weekend where I live). I swear, it would be faster just to throw it all away and start over, except I can’t do that because I am clearly a CC hoarder and I might need a piece of CC that can no longer be downloaded.

...thus goes the preliminary legend of Grimwood Abbey and the horror story of Getting It Set Up. Someday, someday...

So... all I’m saying is, that’s some vague wording right there. Wolfe could have published groundbreaking engineering papers, earned highly prestigious awards for them, and been given a position near the top of his department, sure.

Or... he could have written 10 user manuals for popular models of steampunk coffee makers, got the “perfect attendance” award on a regular basis (Christopher Wolfe? Call in sick? Never!), and got a position as some more influential Scholar’s assistant like Dario. Young Wolfe is totally the type to pad his CV.

Hola, si estás leyendo esto es porque te interesa unirte a este foro de rol, así que en esta publicación explicaré un poco de qué va la cosa, por si de verdad te interesa adentrarte en esta locura.

SINOPSIS:

El mundo de LCDLA está basado en nuestro mundo, pero desde la premisa en que ángeles, demonios, nefilim y anakim existen y cada raza tiene poderosas habilidades mágicas que, desde luego, utilizan para su beneficio o para mantener el orden o crear el caos.

A los ángeles y demonios de esta historia hay que verles, sobre todo, como se describen en la tradición judeo-cristiana, pero del Antiguo Testamento: es decir, son guerreros de Dios y protectores de la humanidad, pero si reciben órdenes de destruir una ciudad, lo hacen sin pestañear "por el bien mayor".

En cuanto a Dios, en realidad ni los ángeles mismos saben mucho sobre su Entidad Creadora, hay quienes hasta dudan de su existencia y sospechan que fue un invento de Abaddon, por lo que cada personaje puede tener las creencias que quiera al respecto.

Además, no se descarta la existencia de otras divinidades de religiones diferentes. Es cierto que muchos seres mitológicos fueron en realidad nefilim que se aprovecharon de su poder para que les adoraran y/o temieran, pero queda abierta la posibilidad de que existan otras deidades o criaturas que vienen de otros planos.

Los ángeles tienen prohibido el amor y el sexo, sin embargo, el ángel Raziel rompió esta norma hace miles de años. La historia es más larga, pero para resumir: él y sus seguidores tuvieron descendencia con los seres humanos, lo que originó a los nefilim (criaturas híbridas con características y poderes increíbles). Abaddon, con ayuda de los arcángeles, conquistó el Cielo aprovechando que Dios había desaparecido y lo burocratizó y creó la Inquisición, organización conformada por ángeles y monjes guerreros que por miles de años, cazaron a los nefilim y a los ángeles caídos.

En el 2012 surgieron dos organizaciones secretas de agentes nefilim que le plantaron cara a la Inquisición (porque todo empezó como una parodia de las historias de agentes secretos xd) y, finalmente, ganó la organización que odiaba a los seres humanos. Su líder quería dominar el mundo y lo logró. Todo esto es lo que llamamos trama del PR2. Así que ahora hacemos que han pasado diez años y estamos viviendo en un mundo en el que fue la "villana" la que se salió con la suya.

Irónicamente, quienes antes causaban caos, ahora quieren mantener el orden del Imperio que han fundado y son los clanes de la guerrilla que se niegan a aceptar a la emperatriz quienes causan caos.

AMBIENTACIÓN

LCDLA está ambientada en la Tierra, pero en un futuro bastante cercano y, sin embargo, bastante cambiado todo, ya que los nefilim, tras haber sido perseguidos y cazados por los ángeles de la Inquisición (trama del PR2) ahora se han hecho con el dominio del mundo. Esto se debe a que de las tres organizaciones que había, ganó la que odiaba a los seres humanos y los considera un cáncer que estaban destruyendo el planeta.

Por un lado, está el Imperio, gobernado por la emperatriz Irina Zaitseva I, que domina el mundo y ha esclavizado a toda la humanidad para explotarla en los campos de concentración. Irina odia a los seres humanos porque los considera inferiores y que estaban destruyendo el planeta. Mucha gente piensa como ella, así que la apoyan y comparten su visión de este nuevo mundo. Sin embargo, no todos los nefilim ni ángeles ni demonios piensan así, conforman La Unión: los grupos de resistencia conformados por las ciudades que aún resisten sin ser conquistadas por el Imperio y clanes guerrilleros que viven exiliados en Neoinferno, un territorio arrasado en parte por la radiación y donde las antiguas ciudades de los humanos han quedado sepultadas bajo un manto de vegetación descontrolada.

La premisa básica es esta: puedes elegir si vives en NOVGOROD, la capital del Imperio, o si perteneces a uno de los CLANES DE LA GUERRILLA. Por el momento, solo hay disponibles dos clanes guerrilleros, pero la idea es que si el proyecto tiene éxito, que las personas usuarias podáis crear más, así como que se abran otras zonas para rolear en otros lugares del mundo, no solo Novgorod y Neoinferno.

La ambientación, de forma muy resumida, viene a quedar así:

NOVGOROD (en la antigua isla de Madagascar) Y EL IMPERIO (África): Cyberpunk y distopía

NEOINFERNO (América): postapocalíptica

EUROPA: Steampunk

ASIA: los campos de concentración humanos. La humanidad vive en una ambientación tipo ciudad misteriosa sin saber la verdad.

OCEANÍA: Ruinas submarinas (el Imperio la destruyó)

DATOS GENERALES:

Género: Fantasía urbana, ciencia-ficción post-apocalíptica y cyberpunk, comedia, drama, romance, existencialismo, agentes secretos.

Siete razas, múltiples especies dentro de esas razas, diferentes arquetipos... muy personalizable. Las especies algunas están basadas en la mitología y otras son inventadas.

Razas disponibles: ángeles, humanos, ángeles caídos, demonios, nefilim, anakim, oscuros, grigori.

Los humanos pueden ser mutantes, cyborgs, monjes guerreros, magos o humanos normales y corrientes.

Dentro de los nefilim y anakim hay muuuchas especies (desde djinss hasta valquirias, cambiapieles, dragones, gorgonas, gárgolas, liches, fuegos fatuos, onis y muchas más)

Plataforma: Jcink

Gráficos: realistas, pero como hay mucho espacio para diferentes imágenes y gifs, si quieres añadir uno animado también puedes, mientras elijas uno realista tb)

Dados: Sí (en el modo campaña, hay un modo arcade sin dados), estoy construyendo un sistema basado en diferentes manuales de mesa (sobre todo Mundo de Tinieblas, Burning Wheel y Power by Apocalypse). Hemos probado diferentes sistemas y hemos aprendido que lo mejor es un sistema que en principio es sencillo de entender, pero que sea difícil de dominar (porque que lanzar complejos hechizos de magia negra sea igual de fácil que otra tarea más sencilla quema a lo largo del tiempo)

Sistema de experiencia: aumenta la reputación y fama del pj y puedes comprar nuevas habilidades y ventajas en la tienda, pero no se sube de nivel, para que los pjs que lleguen después no tengan desventaja.

Número mínimo de palabras: no hay, pero nos gustan los tochos largos xD. Entendemos que si no te salen posts largos no pasa nada, mientras se note tu entusiasmo.

Nivel de dificultad: Somos supercomprensivas y pacientes (ventajas de ser un grupo pequeño), solo postea con tu pj y lo demás lo irás aprendiendo (la mayoría en la vida habíamos hecho rol cuando empezamos en este foro), pero te tiene que gustar leer y escribir. Las normas se tardan en leer adrede para evitar lo que se llaman las “personas canguro”.

Número de pjs por user: en un principio hasta 2, luego puedes hacerte más si demuestras que posteas. Las admis tenemos muchos pjs porque somos pocas y al cabo de tantos años, hemos tenido que ir creando nuevos pjs, pero somos activas, no se trata de acaparar Pb´s ni tonterías de esas.

DOS MODOS DE ROLEAR

Actualmente somos un grupo pequeño que roleamos en una única trama global (es decir, modo CAMPAÑA). Como es difícil conseguir gente nueva que encaje en el grupo, cuando el foro esté acabado queremos dar la oportunidad de elegir entre rolear con dados o sin dados.

MODO ARCADE: Este es el modo en el que te creas a una persona ciudadana de Novgorod y rolearías tus tramas como en cualquier otro foro. No usarías dados y la creación del pj es más sencilla.

MODO CAMPAÑA: pasas a ser o de la Orden de la Llama azul o de un clan guerrillero. Tus acciones afectan al transcurso de la trama global. Requiere dados y mayor compromiso. Lo que se hace en la trama global lo novelizamos en libros que luego publicamos (más adelante lo explico mejor).

¿QUIÉNES SOMOS?

Somos un foro privado que llevamos roleando la misma historia desde el 2012. En realidad venimos de un foro de escritura y literatura y empezamos a rolear porque queríamos crear nuestra propia historia entre varias personas. Me eligieron a mi como la master, aunque jamás había roleado ni tenía idea de cómo se roleaba en otros sitios, así que simplemente me inventé las normas, etc.

La actividad fue un éxito y nos enganchamos, hasta el punto que aguantamos todos estos años bastante viciadas. Éramos pocas, pero había mucho rol. Sin embargo, con el paso del tiempo se nos dificultaba cada vez más avanzar en la trama global por la falta de tiempo de varias usuarias. Así que decidimos darle un fin y empezamos Las crónicas de los abandonados, que es una continuación directa diez años después de lo que habíamos hecho, porque algunas aún sentíamos que la historia de varios pjs estaba inconclusa y queríamos seguir.

Así que aproveché a renovar el foro, dejamos el nuestro super antiguo que estaba ya el pobre y nos mudamos a Jcink con la intención de abrirnos al público, pero como prácticamente estoy yo sola escribiendo todo el lore que es bastante extenso, el sistema de batalla, etc., pues el foro lleva como un año en construcción y a saber cuándo puedo acabarlo para abrirlo al público.

Como necesitábamos seguir roleando, pues nosotras seguimos aunque esté el foro a medio construir y aceptamos a nueva gente, sin embargo, nos hemos llevado varios disgustos y hemos tenido que expulsar a gente que no cumplía con las normas principales que son estas:

-Respeto hacia las demás personas usuarias

-Ser fan de la historia y de sus personajes

-No dejar tirada a la gente sin avisar o pasártela de cháchara en el chat pero luego no postear nunca.

ASÍ ES COMO ROLEAMOS

Actualmente, somos pocas así que somos solo un grupo muy unido, nos consideramos amigas, así que es fundamental que nos sintamos todas a gusto y cómodas. Por eso, aunque acogemos a todo el mundo con ilusión, si una persona acaba con este buen rollo, lo siento pero no encaja en el foro. Cuando nos abramos al mundo será diferente, pero de momento se nos dificulta conseguir gente nueva porque al final acaban incumpliendo las tres reglas principales.

La regla del respeto ya debería haber quedado claro a qué se debe (e implica que si una persona pide pronombres neutros, se respete esto). La de ser fan de la historia y sus pjs es porque roleamos todas en la misma trama global y todas leemos los posts de los demás porque se trata de crear una historia conjunta. Así que si la historia no te gusta y pasas de los pjs, difícilmente te lo vas a pasar bien en el foro y vas a encajar. Es por esto que si te registras, entrarás en un periodo de prueba para que compruebes si te gusta y si te sientes bien en nuestro foro y nosotras vemos si encajas. Cuando nos abramos al público repito que esto cambiará.

La de no desaparecer sin avisar es obvio: no nos importa esperar a alguien, pero si te ausentas por demasiado tiempo, bloqueas la historia, así que ahora quien tarde más de 15 días en postear, es absorbida por las mariposas negras.

Una cosa más: en la trama global se rolea en primera persona y tiempo pasado porque nosotras novelizamos después toda la historia y pasarlo todo al mismo tiempo es demasiado tiempo de edición, así que se pide que, por favor, roleemos todas con el mismo tiempo y persona (solo en el modo campaña).

SAGA DE NOVELAS

Soy escritora, sobre todo del género fantasía y actualmente estoy publicando las novelizaciones de las cosas que roleamos. En Wattpad vamos a empezar la novelización del PR2, y algún día llegará el turno a lo que hagamos en este foro. Si no te interesa que tus pjs salgan en la historia, avísalo con antelación. Es por esto que los pjs que te crees para la trama global deben ser originales, no vale adaptar ni usar ideas de otros proyectos, pues sería plagio.

SOBRE EL RESPETO

Una cosa más que suele echar a la gente hacia atrás, pero preferimos avisar desde el principio para evitar disgustos.

Todas las usuarias actuales creemos en la igualdad de todos los seres vivos y que todos los seres vivos merecen ser tratados con el máximo respeto.

Eso no significa que tú tengas que pensar así siempre y cuando no incumplas las normas. Pero si una persona te pide que le trates con unos pronombres, respétala, o su sexualidad, por muy extraña que te suene. No evites a pjs solo por el color de su piel o su sexualidad o físico (esto puede parecer muy obvio pero juro que he vivido cómo ignoraban a pjs por ser de descendencia afroamericana dentro de la misma trama). Este es uno de los motivos por el que el manual está en femenino todo o a veces con una x, porque sabemos que la persona que no soporte leer algo así, pues seguramente no se sentirá cómoda en nuestro foro. Tú no tienes que usar el lenguaje inclusivo ni nada de eso, no pretendemos adoctrinar a nadie. Pero es una cuestión de respeto y que estamos hartas de encontrarnos con gente que no sabe ni pedir perdón, porque deslices cometemos todas las personas, el problema es cómo se reacciona después y qué actitud se toma.

Dicho todo esto, si aún te interesa, puedes contactar conmigo por privado y ya te explico el resto. Como el foro no está acabado y es mucha información la que hay que asimilar, prefiero explicártelo poco a poco y que la construcción de tu pj sea en conjunto, respetando tus ideas y aportandote y ayudandote las demás para encajar a tu pj lo mejor posible en la trama.

PD: Si solo quieres el link para criticar que usamos lenguaje inclusivo, por favor ahórratelo (sí, hemos vivido esto también -.-). No lo usamos. Solo el manual está escrito en femenino plural o usando la palabra persona, etc. Si te arden los ojos, pues lo sentimos, pero jamás se lo hemos impuesto a nadie, así que quizás deberías reflexionar por qué te molesta tanto.

Book Recommendations: Airborn trilogy by Kenneth Oppel; they are a steampunk swashbuckling Victorian/Edwardian era adventure novels with airships and lots of action. They remain my favorite YA books and highly recommended.

Other than that, the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik outlines the Napoleonic Wars but with each country fielding an air force of dragons and their riders. Badass, amazingly written, and with very believable periodic/historic dialogue! Also the dragons have cute personalities.

Movie Recommendations: sorry this turned out to be so long

Live action:

Contagion; a very realistic sci-fi thriller with an amazing cast, about a massive pandemic outbreak.

Notes on a Scandal; this is also a thriller about a very creepy and manipulative old teacher (played phenomenally by Judi Dench) and her friendship with a younger colleague (played by Cate Blanchett) who has a romantic relationship with one of her students.

Land of Mine; an unconventional war film told from the perspective of German prisoners of war after WWII, many of whom were boys, forced by the Allied government after the war to manually clear landmines from miles and miles of coast.

On a lighter note, if you’re on this blog, chances are you’re a fan of the MCU! Iron Man 1, CACW, and SMHC are my favorites :)

Animated:

Song of the Sea, an Irish animated movie that really has a unique and fable-like animation style.

Patema Inverted (Sakasama no Patema); it has an awesome premise and is gorgeously animated, and I like the characters!

Your Name (Kimi no Na Wa); this probably needs no explanation but I adore the premise and the animation as well. The voice acting is also on point!

Other than these, most things by Hayao Miyazaki or Pixar, and some by Disney are quite good.

TV Recommendations: Game of Thrones, A Handmaid’s Tale, and an old but fantastic X-files-like series Fringe! I always loved the opening sequence.

Music Recommendations: As a genre I love instrumental music so from that category Two Steps From Hell is at the top of the list.

For lyrical music, I tend to like a particular song instead of an artist, but One Republic, the Fray, and Green Day get shout outs.

Game Recommendations: A category I added because I love games! Anyway, The Long Dark, This War of Mine, The Banner Saga, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun.

Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate? Tea, but my go-to drink is milk.

Cats or dogs? Dogs, but my own personality is like a cat so maybe I just need some extroverted animal to love me.
