He slept, curled like a kitten, his brow nearly touching mine, on the other end of his pallet. His breathing was deep and even, and one long hand was palm up on the blankets between us, as if in offering, or beseeching something of me. Sleepily I reached over and set my hand in his. He did not seem to wake. Strangely, I felt at peace.

i truly believe fool's fate was the closest fitz ever came to realizing his feelings for beloved. after beloved died, he stopped caring. before, there was always a layer to his thoughts, always a little hesitation or a word that dismissed the moments full meaning ("i felt strangely at peace", etc) bc that was safe, right? if he had a mental wall in his thoughts about beloved he surely couldn't feel anything else he wasn't saying thus he wouldn't have to explain himself. but after beloved died, that stops. he doesn't care anymore. like would he have ever thought something like "my dream was dead in my arms" before?? or saying there were "things he would have said to him" if he knew beloved was actually gonna die?? what the FUCK was that about or "the man i had been would not survive this loss" or the fact that he was willing to DIE in beloved's place. like i genuinely think this was the most honest we've ever seen him and he came sooo close to realizing his feelings but then beloved left him and he was forced to suppress them again bc he could NOT be in love w beloved if he wanted a happily ever after with molly. he couldn't be in love. no. imagine him realizing it w that poem and then repressing it bc now that he couldn't have a future w beloved (which he was FULLY willing to have he was fully willing to leave molly and his DAUGHTER behind to go w beloved) he WOULD have the future he 'always wanted' w molly and i think that's exactly why he skipped so much in that chapter and felt so shallow bc he genuinely was trying to convince himself that this was what he wanted and this would finally make him happy but it was not. all he got was content. all he got was an ever after. all he got was burned letters to beloved he would never send. like. god. it makes me so sad to think he was finally close to the truth only to repress it as self-defense.

"To be the best of friends again, making nothing of one another's differences, to enjoy the days and face hardships optimistically; he represented all that to me, and I vowed I would not let that carelessly slip from my grip again."
- Fitz, Fool's fate
