YEAR OF THE BUTTERFLY
previous years: A SONG THAT DEGRADES EACH TIME YOU PLAY IT :: 2018 A CHURCH AND JOHN LENNON’S “IMAGINE” :: 2017 SIKH DEVOTIONAL MUSIC :: 2016 SPOOKY BLACK :: 2015 this year: I’ve spent the past few months working on a book that I’ve always wanted to write but never figured I’d make the time for. At a really basic level, it’s about listening to music with friends. A couple weeks ago, I devoted a few days to reading a stack of books and articles about the emotional experience of music. They were written by philosophers, critics, cognitive scientists, historians. I took from them two overarching questions. First, what does it mean to assign a piece of music a feeling, like “happy” or “sad?” Is the song itself “sad,” or does it just model a kind of sadness proximate to how we feel? What elements of a song do this? The fraying of a voice? Minor keys? Tempo? Is it all a trick of memory? None of the answers really satisfied me, since music is such an intimate thing. A song makes us feel a way for reasons that are often either blindingly obvious or remote and mysterious. An expert can tell you that humans are wired to feel joy when a certain configuration of notes are struck in tandem, but maybe it just reminds you of looking at the front door.
The other question was whether music itself facilitates any unique emotional possibilities--a mode of feeling that we can’t get anywhere else. Music doesn’t mimic the real world, it doesn’t make arguments. One writer suggested that the thrill of music was its capacity to remind you, foremost, that music can thrill you. In essence, each time we hear something new and feel something, we are being reminded of all the times we’ve felt this way before. We’re living in the echo of a former enchantment. Maybe you’ll hear it again, process it, assign it a genre or context, and the mystique evaporates. But music is one of those things that doesn’t happen on our time. We don’t stand in front of it and train our gaze on this quadrant or that. We don’t flip back to make sure we didn’t miss something. You can’t slow it down as it is happening, you merely let it happen.
In the spring, the Museum of Chinese in America in Manhattan showed “The Moon Represents My Heart,” an exhibition I worked on with MOCA’s curators, Herb and Andrew. The basic idea was to look at all the ways music had enriched immigrant life, from early opera troupes touring America’s Chinatowns to karaoke bars, church choirs, and after-school violin lessons, fifties doo-wop trios to garage punks and self-taught dance music producers. There’s no legible tradition of Chinese American music so we just wanted to present it as a textured and everyday thing--the experience of the fan could be as legitimate as that of a Mando-pop superstar. While working on the show, people would often ask me for a playlist, but I didn’t really have any to share. It wasn’t really about the music itself, which could sound derivative or amateur to some. It was about the fact that they sought to express themselves through music, in contexts that made them outliers and oddballs. I came to love all the music in our show because of that second-hand thrill--that sense that these moments had been deeply meaningful to everyone in the room.
You can hear it in the voice of Stephen Cheng, who ended up being the show’s most memorable star. He put out a rocksteady gem in the sixties and then spent the next decade in New York trying to get the Dragon Seeds, his Chinese “folk-rock” band, off the ground. Cheng died years ago, but Andrew found his children, who brought some reels of unreleased music to the museum. I remember staring at them, wondering what was on them. It was a kind of anticipation and wonder that I often miss, when the operative feeling I associate with music-listening on the internet is the frenzy of opening and closing windows, clicking links, proving my humanity to a captcha.
Stephen’s singing wasn’t great, but it was perfect. His version of “Yesterday,” all warbly and over-the-top, has now supplanted the original for me. Somehow, we played some of Stephen’s songs on the radio, including one about butterflies and love. Somehow, one of the people listening was a butterfly expert, and he was about to marry another butterfly expert. Who knew such a song was possible, the groom-to-be told me. Stephen was too obscure to be properly forgotten. Or maybe his song was just dormant all these years. It awaited just the right listener, and now, over forty years later, he would get his propers, sandwiched somewhere between the vows and Kool and the Gang, a couple minutes of people scratching their heads, searching for the right smile, saying Can you believe this? to one another.

Class 1A-rtistic (AU/HCs)
Hi peeps! Today I offer you another incredible BNHA hcs. This time, it's my art academia, wow. In this post I'll talk briefly about each members' of class 1A favourite medium/style/subject of artistic expression. And since there's already so many Music Band/Dance AUs, I'm keeping performance art off this list. Now, let's go!
Yuga Aoyama (real life collage) - he likes to use bold colors as well as way too much glitter. His pieces are usually very expressive and full of positive vibes!
Mina Ashido (clay sculpture) - she goes mostly into abstract. Likes to experiment with shapes and textures
Tsuyu Asui (digital art) - she's mainly focused on character design. Uses very cute, simple style to create lovable, mascot-like characters
Tenya Iida (printmaking/ukioy-e prints) - puts a lot of detail into his works. Loves the technical aspects of it, all the calculations that go into creating a visually pleasing print. His works are multilayered and multicolored
Ochako Uraraka (sketch) - she specializes in portraits and caricature. From the about age of 12 she's been drawing portraits (mostly for her classmates) to make a bit of money
Mashirao Ojiro (photography) - he usually photographs cultural events, festivals, and crowds/cities. His pieces are mostly meant to serve as commentary of society and deal with matters of loneliness, family, communication between people, etc
Denki Kaminari (typography/lettering) - his works are heavily inspired by graffiti culture. They look messy and use bright, vibrant colors. Also, about 80% of time he realizes mid work that he misspelled something, and has to either start again or think of creative way to cover up his mistakes
Eijiro Kirishima (comics) - his style is mostly inspired by western superhero comics. He does most of his work traditionally and is very good at inking as well as anatomy and muscle placement. Most of his works have rather heavy shading
Koji Koda (photography) - his main subjects are nature and animals. He specializes in micro photography
Rikido Sato (sculpture/wood carving) - he likes to make figurines of animals or hausehold objects. They're usually super tiny and cute
Mezo Shoji (modern art) - his paintings are very minimalistic and abstract. Mostly composed of simple, geometric shapes in primary colors
Hanta Sero (photography) - most of the time, he creates indoors compositions that he later photographs. They look very clean and unnatural from design (a lot of straight lines, patterns, etc)
Fumikage Tokoyami (photography) - his works are extremely experimental. Often shot in black and white, or at late hours, it's often hard to understand what they're meant to potray
Shoto Todoroki (traditional painting) - he uses abstract paintings to convey complicated emotions. He plays a lot with textures by using different amounts of paint and uses mostly dark colors with sprinkled in pastels
Tooru Hagakure (digital art) - she's mostly interested in illustration and wants to illustrate children's books in the future. Her style is super adorable. Often, she doesn't use outlines, using very basic cell shading to convey character poses. Uses a lot of simple geometric shapes for her characters
Katsuki Bakugou (digital art) - his works are highly stylized with thick oulines and sharp edges as well as bold colors and black cellshading
Izuku Midoriya - (comics) - manga manga manga manga manga manga manga manga manga manga ma
Kyoka Jiro (photo manipulation/collage) - she spends most of her time designing covers for her favourite music albums
Momo Yaoyorozu (oil painting) - she likes to paint extremely detailed and realistic full scene artworks. She often uses large canvases and can work on one piece for months
Minoru Mineta (comic/digital art) - you know ;)
...and that's about it for now. Let me know if you have any suggestions or disagree on any of my choices.

NOTE - Hi, yes, Cho here. So um, this is an oc for a good friend of mine, Nich’s story on AO3 called Trying Through The Trauma. It's a DEH thing, and it is so so so good. Omfg. So good. I'm on my phone, so I can't really link it (I don't trust myself to try) but GO CHECK IT OUT. I cannot recommend it enough. Nich is @bbcotaku here, so SHOW THEM SOME LOVE. Also um...this isn't really good and I'm not too proud but just...aaaaahh, here. Full Name: Carly Faustine Etta Cannel Nicknames: Firecracker, Firefly, C.F., E.C., Sparks, Steam, Ashes, Luciole, Froid(The list goes on, a majority of them being said by Baylee) Age: 14 Birthday: May 5 Birthplace: The Bronx Sexual Orientation: Demiromantic Ace Social Status: Loner, she just doesn’t like people, and only really hangs around her roommate. Not a lot of people have even heard her willingly talk. She very much an introvert. Posture: Slouched, head down, usually looks disapproving or just simply scowls, folded arms, nose stuffed in a book, etc. Just, general vibe of “Go Away”. Also, this totally doesn't fit here, but I make my own rules, but she’s bald. Her hair was burnt off, which is why one eyebrow is totally not there. The eyelashes on that eye are also not there. Mental Illness: Depression Drug: Prozac Emotions: Just generally grumpy and not wanting to be wherever she is. Way of speaking: Gruffly in as few words as possible, very throaty and husky. Swears like every other sentence. Vocal chords are clearly damaged. Family: Sarah Cannell - Overworked waitress and mother, Richard “Rickie” Herleif Cannell - Engineer and father, and Celestina “Tina” Cannell - Adopted younger sister, in Fourth Grade, Valentine - Siamese cat Roommate: Baylee Gina Ruskin - Bubble powers Likes: The sight of rain on glass, the smell of lavender and vanilla, owls, being alone in her room, gray days where the world just looks muted and peaceful, her cat back at home, her little sister Celestina, reading, beach sand, the cold, hoodies that cover her hands, sucking on ice, drawing and getting charcoal on her fingers, scented candles, and thunder Dislikes: Snow, wearing short sleeved tops or tank tops without something to cover her arms, shorts, the texture of wool, when her hair dries as a curly and fluffy mess, ignorant people, know-it-alls, athletic things, holding hands or even brushing hands with people, lemonade, spicy food, seafood, loud rooms, her mother and most of the people in The Ward(primarily nurses and doctors) Habits: Fidgets with wig when nervous or uncomfortable, washes her hands more than the average person, subconsciously chews on her wig when deeply thinking, hums when working, leaves things unfinished, falls asleep at midnight, thinks too much into things, and she doesn’t really speak her mind too much unless she’s forced to Strengths: Keeping her “cool” when it comes to her fire. Her fire is a Honed power, however, given the fact that she isn’t exactly as happy as a lot of Patients, there are times when she’s gone full out Agni Kai Azula from pure anger. Though, that’s only happened like three or four times, because she is rather disciplined with her power. Given the fact that pyrokinesis is commonly known for being destructive when the user is angry, it requires a certain discipline and restraint. Unconscious, emotion-influenced, impulsive, or reckless use of this power can be catastrophic, and she knows that. So, she actually does put forth a lot of effort in Power Control, because she doesn’t want to hurt others like she hurt herself. Even if her own harm was an accident that she couldn't have prevented in the moment, that doesn’t change the deadly factor of what her powers are. Fire. Another strength that Carly possesses is writing. Albeit a small one that she doesn’t use as much anymore, it is a strength nonetheless. She just has a certain way with words and a gift for description. Weakness: Carly is rather blunt, indifferent, and at times has been described to be callous. As previously stated, she has had cases of absolute fury, but beyond that she tends to keep her emotions inside her head. Everything else about her is blank, and she intends to keep it that way. Her GP isn’t exactly as nice as Dr. Sherman, but her GP is nice enough. Nice enough that Carly does somewhat open up during one-on-one therapy. Open up enough to say a few things about her home life. She hasn’t said much, but she’s described little important things to her. Like her cat Valentine, her sister, and little things like that. Little things that made her happy back home. Abilities: Carly is Pyrokinetic in a lot of ways that you would know Pyrokinetics. She can light herself on fire, burn things, melt things, and etc. A lot of the time, her fire is triggered by strong emotions, however she is learning to make herself angry or sad enough to turn it on at will. Though, when her emotions aren’t strong enough to actually create a flame, steam or smoke will be in the place of fire, usually with the flames themselves following soon after. When she cries, her tears tend to just sizzle away into steam because her heightened emotion causes her skin’s heat to increase; even if she is already ignited, her tears still steam away. Steam is a general indication of Carly being sad, overwhelmed, or scared, whilst smoke is an indication of frustration, annoyance, or anger. Fears: Due to her mother previously yelling at her for wanting to be a Patient with powers, going as far to call them freaks, Carly has developed a strong fear of hurting anybody close to her, namely Tina. Tina means the world to her and she could never imagine hurting her, but now with her fire powers, she is terrified to ever go near her again because what if she hurt Tina enough to kill her? Because of that, she finds it difficult to let anyone close to her, because she doesn’t want to have that much love for anyone else since she would then be afraid to hurt anyone. Carly is also very very terrified of bugs. ────── Personality ────── Carly used to be a very bubbly, bright girl for a good majority of her childhood. She didn’t get to see many kids, as she was homeschooled, so she was very close to her family. Especially Tina. Tina and her were the best of friends, closer than close. Carly looked up to her mother, wanting to be exactly like her. Her father was her hero. She was just the definition of a “child-like youth” in the beginning of her life. However, right around the time where she was seven and a half, her mother said things that scared her. She was always praised when she was younger, then her mother suddenly dumped out thoughts and words about how Carly could grow into a failure in her eyes. Since she had gone basically her whole life with endless love and support, it scared Carly to think of the fact that it could all be ripped away if she got powers. So, she started to emotionally tuck into a little ball. She became meek and soft spoken, often just saying yes to questions or saying that she was fine when she didn’t feel such. She would say she was only tired, but that wasn’t true. She was tired, yes, but that wasn’t all. Her reaction times were slowed, she was disinterested in a lot of things, she shied away from her mother or any conversation, she couldn’t remember things as well, and she had a hard time making decisions. A lot of the bright, energetic girl that she was changed. Carly kept her joy and light deep deep down in her because she was afraid. She didn’t want her mother to hate her if she got powers, in fact she was scared of the idea of even remotely getting any powers. When she eventually went to public school, she would stay in the back of her class and draw or write. She stopped paying attention and caring. All she could think about was that her mother hated her, or at least Carly thought she did. Her father wasn’t as fun as he used to be, in fact, he barely talked to his family anymore. Celestina was the only person that Carly felt safe and calm around, she was all she had left as it seemed. And then when she got her powers, Carly changed again. She constantly thought about her mom calling Patients freaks, and now she was one. She was a freak. Her meek, quiet shell hardened. Now it is a quiet and annoyed shell. The only person who could keep her talking for more than ten seconds a piece is her roommate. Carly doesn’t keep many people close, except her sister and possibly Baylee. Though, nobody really knows why she tolerates the loud girl, and neither does she. ────── History ────── Carly Cannell was born in the Bronx on Arlington Avenue. Her childhood was fine, average even. She had a sister, a mother, and a father. She didn’t live with divorced parents, though her little sister was adopted, but Celestina was loved as much as any biological sister. They were happy, all of them. The community they lived in was extraordinarily nice, but of course there were always going to be the “rough boys” and “snobby girls”, though that was a given. Though, Carly was home schooled for most of her life with her mother as her teacher. Beyond that, her childhood wasn’t awful. But, as she grew out of the small innocence of being extremely young, Carly knew more. She picked things up. Saw more, heard more. She could see that her mother was overworked and stressed with teaching her children, that her dad wasn’t always strong and funny, and that her sister was very clearly going to be bullied if they went into public school. She didn’t quite understand it all at first, but she did within a few months. It wasn’t awful though, Carly helped out around the house as much as possible, she let her father’s pride stay intact by pretending that she didn’t know that he felt guilty for his wife’s stress, and she made sure that her sister knew she was loved. Life wasn’t hard, wasn’t easy. It was average. Her street always held a small bonfire cookout to kick off every summer, which was the one time when the two Cannell daughters got to socialize, though they kind of got brushed off and ignored. But, it was where she learned about the people with powers. The people who went through enough trauma that their bodies adapted some power. She had overheard some mothers, hers included, talking about the possibility that their children might develop these powers. At first, Carly was confused given the fact that she was only seven at the time. Weren’t powers and superheroes fake? Apparently not, because they sounded serious. Later that night, when stars decorated the sky and the bonfire gave everything an orangey glow, the small seven-year-old skipped up to her mother. She asked about the conversation that she heard from earlier. Even when she was being bathed in the orange glow, Sarah’s face paled to an obvious milky white. Begrudgingly, she did explain what Carly had heard. Sarah explained that powers aren’t fiction, that they’re real and very controversial. Some of it went over the young brunette’s head, but for the most part, she did understand. Kind of, it was confusing, but there wasn’t one lie in her mother’s words. Later on, when the fire had been turned to nothing but smoke and embers, her parents helped with packing up tables and benches as much as they could. The two Cannell daughters stayed sat under a tree. Celestina was three at the time, sleeping in her sister’s lap. Though Carly knew that her sister was unconscious and wouldn’t hear her, she found herself excitedly explaining everything that her mother told her. Her mother meant it as a careful warning, but she saw it as a possibility of greatness. For the next year, Carly kept doing reckless things that she hoped would get her her powers, only for her mother to realize such and yell at her. Once she started to yell at her for how wrong it was to actually want powers, she didn’t stop for hours. All of her fears about having her daughter become a “freak” came out. That day would be very heavily influential to Carly. A girl who was once very kind, loving, and full of life became timid, meek, and afraid. At first she was afraid of disappointing her mother, but then it grew into her being afraid of herself. Deep down, she knew there was something abnormal and freakish in her, and she was terrified of what it was. It became obvious to Richard that his eldest daughter was not okay at all, that she wasn’t ever going to be who she was. But, he didn’t know what to do. With this feeling of failure, Richard fell into a drinking problem. He never did anything bad when he was drunk, just stayed in the basement, the place where he worked. Slowly, Carly’s family was unraveling. The summer right after Carly turned nine, only her and her mother went to the cookout. Richard was too drunk to be bothered and Celestina was sick, which left Carly and Sarah. At some point during the cookout, when the bonfire had been lit up, a few boys decided to mess with Carly. Just last year, she had moved to a public school so her mother could get a job, and almost instantly got picked on for being silent. These boys were among the many who bothered her. They had intended to push her into the dirt, but they underestimated their strength. Instead, she was pushed into the fire. For a very short moment, the boys laughed, but then Carly started to scream. Her agonized screeching got the attention of everyone there. At first, Sarah thought it was just another stunt to try and get powers, then she noticed the boys running with panic and guilt. And then Sarah desperately yelled for someone to do something, since they had all been watching without knowing what to do. Then the screaming stopped, and everyone thought she died. Sarah, distraught at the idea of losing her daughter, demanded the fire be put out so they could see. And it was, only for everyone to see Carly lying unconscious against the now soggy wood, but she was still on fire. A bright, large fire swirled up into the almost night from her clothes and her skin. She had fire powers. Carly escaped with burns scattered across her body from the initial fire and had been out cold for a week. When she woke up, they had to explain what really happened, because she genuinely thought that she had died. Once they explained that she had been coated in enough fire that the bonfire didn’t impact her anymore, she started to panic and feel sick. Freak. That one word hammered the inside of her skull. She was a freak now. Her family would hate her. She wouldn’t get to see Tina again. Freak. Freak. Freak. By the time that she got out of the hospital for her burns, which would leave permanent scars, she had developed a depression. All that she could think of is that the world would be better off without a freak like her. Freaks like her got thrown into the middle of Arizona. And that’s where she was headed a few days after the hospital realised her. She was going from one hospital to another. To The Ward. (The trip took like…a kinda long time(going off of actual bus times, that’s two days)

Last week my manager asked me whether I could fill him to some meetings that he can't attend in the main office for this monday.
"Sure, why not"
It's not like it's the first time, and also the main office is located in central. Sometimes it's good to move out from your boring office and get some quick escape even tho it's just some meetings.
So here I am, just finishing the last meeting barely past 7 pm. Usually the meeting would take much longer and I had to stay and keep company my boss.
But since is still early afternoon, my boss asked me to visit a storehouse to catch up and check some lists.
"Don't worry, there will be Mr. Simon who will meet you there. There won't be much things to do, just deliver some documents and etc."
"Alright.
.
I thought it was near the main office. Taking the taxi itself took 50 minutes even though the street is crowded as late night rain in mountain.
Finishing the tasks also took more time that I calculated. It's already past midnight, and it's impossible to find transportation back to home.
"Just take a rest here, there's a nearby hotel. Not fancy, but still a hotel"
"Sure"
So Mr. Simon take me to the hotel he mentioned. He booked me a room, and say goodbye after gave me the key.
.
It's a really simple old hotel. Not fancy, barely functioning. Even there isn't any lift, so I had to use steel trailed stairs to the 3rd floor. There isn't much decorations on hall, just a single wilted flower on the corner. The smells isn't bad, but also doesn't feel good. It feels like there's a hidden pile of leaves hidden somewhere.
But at least I can rest and go back quickly in the morning. What you could expect from quick cheap old hotel?
When I enter the room, the interior also doesn't stand out too much. A queen bed, a television hanged on the wall, a working desk and plastic chair, a wardrobe and small rack to place your shoe, I think?
The only decorations in this room are a painting hanged beside tv and some tablecloth.
I throw my bag on the bed and changed my clothes. Good grieves I always bring some extra clothes in my bag. I quickly wash my face, but my luck, the taps suddenly stops.
"Oh come, on!"
Grumpily I take the towel and flung myself to the bed. The bed smells like an old linen. And I wonder how just how old this hotel?
I stare at my ceiling, and realize there's some extra decorations detail in the corner. It looks like a pattern... But the placement is too weird, it doesn't have taste. But it really catches my eyes and it leads to the painting.
I take a closer look to the painting. The classic painting, about a crowded market in the village. There are merch, a beggar, some children, and another busy people. I guess the painter won't take much hassle drawing their faces since they are all on their back.
I go back to my bed and preparing myself to sleep.
"Just take a sleep... quickly fall asleep... And continue tomorrow morning"
.
Or at least that was what I thought.
I can't even sleep. Everytime I close my eyes I can hear a scratch in the walls. Rat, ghost, or even fairy, I don't care, I just can't stand with contrast of the tranquil night and the noise on the walls.
I get out of my bed and take a look to the window. I checked my phone, it's a freaking 3 a.m and I can't sleep. I also notice some notifications and emails, and decide to open my laptop and just do some works.
And that's when the TV suddenly turned on.
"That's surprised me!"
I quickly search for the remote but cannot find it anywhere, so I decided to turn it off by the quick button beside the TV. The last time I got surprised by TV is when I ask the hotel's staff to set up it as a morning alarm since I'm not a morning person.
"Maybe the last setting is still left active"
.
My glance move from TV to the painting again. The painting is made from oil paint, but there's no cover on it. I put my hand on it and swipe it slowly, and I stopped when I feel something texture on it.
The texture is come from a woman face on painting.
"Wait, a face? I thought this painting is consistent about the concept"
I take a closer look, and have conclusion that maybe the woman face is painted later, either by the originals painter or not.
And there's something weird about the face.. Like she looks sad, but actually relieved. The Artist is sure is an amazing one to be able to deliver such emotion in a small spaces.
"Or maybe I'm just over analyzing when the artist just painted it randomly"
I decide to go back to work and hope morning can come faster so I can go back to my own bed.
.
At 6 o'clock I already finished my work and bath, and make up my bed. Being early is easy when you don't sleep at all.
I open the window to get some fresh air and turn on the TV. That's when I realized something on the painting.
Faces.
They all have faces.
Not just a woman, but all the villagers are.
And they have the same expressions.
"Oh shit"
I was debating with myself to keep calm or not, when I realize the woman before is putting some nervous smile.
And she's drawn bigger than before.
I'm sure before she was just a bystander behind the merch, but now she feels like a main object in the painting.
.
That solely send me a cold shiver, and quickly I put my jacket on.
"Let's just have a breakfast outside, let me get out from here first".
I quickly reach my bag and walk outside my room. Walking through hall feels like forever before I reach the stairs.
It was only half way down to second floor when I heard another noise. The handrail, the steel handrail, is making some noise. A noise you made as someone punch the handrail with drumstick as you get down the stairs.
But the noise is getting closer to me.
And faster.
"Oh God"
.
I ran, and ran to the lobby on first floor.
.
Seeing another human never make me feel so relieved before. I ran out of breath, not because the running but more likely from the nervousness.
The hotel staff just look at me without words. When I get my composure back, one of them just calmly said to me
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah... Maybe.. I guess"
.
"I wanna check out right now, please"
"Ok, one second, please have a seat"
I take a look at my surroundings. The lobby is at least better, warmer and has more sense in decorations.
Bugging my mind, I decide to ask the staff
"Excuse me... But I think you have to change the decorations please on the room, especially with painting. It gave you bad vibes to the customer."
"We understand, we humbly thank you for the advice."
"We are planning for some big renovations to the more modern and simple theme, but our late owner still have so many his beloved paintings left in this building"
I give him another confused look.
"Our owner is a painter, his home basically just a museum and he decides to put some of his work here"
"Ah.. I see"
"He is so compassionate with his work. Sadly after his long sick daughter died, he suddenly fell sick and stop all activities"
"But maybe you can change some painting here.. like the one in my room. It feels.. weird, feels like they watch you when you sleep? I know I'm just such a scaredy cat"
I give them my best nervous smile, hope they won't be offended. The staff look at me confused, but then reply me with warm sme
"But, miss... Ah, I think you mistakes something here. Don't worry too much, I think you only a little bit tired."
"...Maybe. I'm sorry."
"No, no, we really appreciate your advice. We hope you have a great rest and experience in our hotel. "
"Okay, I'm gonna book a taxi"
"Here let me help you"
Sigh. Maybe he's right, maybe I'm just overthinking and tired.
.
When the taxi arrived, the staff help me bring my bag and opened the door.
"Thank you"
"My pleasure"
I hold the back the taxi's door when he closed it for me.
"Wait.. Can I ask who is the owner?"
"Sure. The owner is known as RSF. It's his pen name as an artist"
Gulp.
"I know him... He's famous for his landscape painting, right?"
"True."
"Is he... Love to paint people?"
"So far as we know, we've only seen his work in nature genre. Like you only seeing tree, building, and flower?"
"...... Alright. Thank you"
I closed the door and ask the taxi to move.
And make a hard mental note, to not stay in this hotel again

Meet the ICON10 Board Q&A: Veronica Marché Jamison, Secretary & Volunteer Coordinator
Trained as a fashion designer, Veronica Marché Jamison's illustrations are inspired by color, silhouette and movement. Her personal work celebrates the beauty traditions of Black women. Veronica's clients include Essence Magazine, Shea Moisture and Bloomingdale's. She lives in Philadelphia with her husband David.
Tell us a bit about your position on the ICON10 Board. What is your role?
I am the secretary and volunteer coordinator for ICON10. My job is to take copious notes of our planning of the magnificent conference. And I’ll get to work with vibrant young student volunteers who are coming to Detroit to help us rock this thing out!
ICON10 is headed to Detroit! What should attendees look forward to in the Motor City?
Two words: Food and music. There is absolutely no way that you could visit Detroit and not experience the deep and storied culture here. Make a playlist with some Stevie Wonder, Anita Baker, J. Dilla and The Temptations to gear up for your visit, make sure to grab a Coney and some soul food, and take a special field trip to check out the architecture too!
Why is it important for the illustration community to convene in person at ICON?
So many of us work in isolation and only communicate with friends and colleagues electronically. It’s amazing to get into the same room as a bunch of creatives with different ideas, passions and techniques and learn from each other. I love having face-to-face discussions about issues and ideas in the industry, and learning about the lives and work of mainstage speakers.  Honestly, though? My favorite part of ICON is just sitting with other artists and sketching over drinks!
Any highlights from past ICONs you'd like to share?
Eleanor Davis’ mainstage presentation from ICON9 was simultaneously heartbreaking and incredibly uplifting. I’ve never seen anything that quite captured what a gift creativity is. William Joyce’s keynote in Austin was full of inspiration and wonder. And I loved sitting in on the education symposium, listening to our industry’s educators talk about teaching the next generation of professional creatives.
What are you working on right now?
I’m in the home stretch of my first children’s book with Little, Brown & Co. (!!!!!) I have a constantly-evolving personal project around the intersection of fashion, beauty, race and identity. I just finished my first illustrated cover for bridal magazine, and I’m also teaching fashion illustration here in Philadelphia.
Tell us a bit about your workspace. What kind of setup / space do you use?
HA! I have a home studio with a big, beautiful counter height table that I almost never use until it’s time to paint final art. (But my resolution for 2018 is to use it more of course.) I actually find it easier to sketch and generate ideas while I’m stretched out on my incredibly comfy living room couch with the television playing in the background, so I’m reorganizing my studio to create that same vibe closer to my *actual* workstation and supplies.
I also have a pretty hefty library with books on fashion, costume history, textiles, art, and black American culture and visual history that I can sit and peruse for hours.
What inspires you?
I’m a trained fashion designer, so I’m always drawn to color, texture, pattern and silhouette. A model serving a fierce, angular pose can be the BEST source of inspiration! I find movement and dance incredibly inspiring, especially when I’m watching contemporary dancers, figure skaters and pop-star entertainers (okay, mostly just Beyoncé). I think a lot about the ways femininity and sensuality exist outside of the male gaze, and things like belly dance, Afro-Caribbean movement and sensual movement keep me engrossed for hours on end.
Any creative tools you can't live without?
I don’t feel Iike I’ve truly explored anything until I’ve painted it with my watercolors. Also, I’ve just started working with LePen’s brush marker and OMG, I love it so hard.
Do you find the time to work on self-initiated / personal projects?
Yes — usually in the fall. My most consistent project is my annual collection of holiday cards featuring women of color. I start tackling that every year around October (although I’m learning I should start earlier to stress myself out less when it comes time to ship). Outside of that, I tackle personal projects in fits and starts — my ideas and inspiration are always changing and evolving.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of illustration?
I took up pole dance as a hobby about two years ago and have since become sort of a fanatic evangelist. (Sorry not sorry.) I teach now a couple of times a week at a friend’s studio, and I have never felt more limber, strong and in shape.
I also really love cooking — if I ever take on a third career (illustration is my second one), it will be me becoming the Millennial Ina Garten.
What has been the best part of being part of the ICON10 Board?
The ICON10 board is honestly made of the best people ever. I work in solitude in a pretty niche market (fashion illustration) so it’s been incredible connecting with people who are not only supremely talented but also deeply committed to creating a thriving creative community. Also, we laugh a lot, which is good, because laughing is pretty much my favorite thing to do.
What's your motto for 2018?
The entire lyric to “Bodak Yellow.” Okay, I’m kidding (but only a little bit). My motto for 2018 is “The magic is in the work.” It’s a reminder to myself more than anything else — to trust the process, and to not be scared to sit down and just *start*.
Check out more of Veronica’s work at veronicamarche.com and follow her on Twitter and Instagram.
Tickets for ICON10 are still available. Go to Eventbrite to purchase yours today.

Elsie’s Den Tour (Before + After)
Well, this is by far the longest I’ve ever spent decorating a room and maybe the most challenging room in our home, but the payoffs are SO BIG. This den is the living space we spend the most time in as a family. I completed it right before we left for China. It’s where we spent Nova’s first Christmas and I have a strong feeling that someday when we move away it will be the room we miss the most.
I have a zillion photos to share. But first, a walk down memory lane! (You can see all the before pics here.)
This is more before/after pics that I would normally do, but I wanted to show all the angles to really explain the transformation.
From this view, the most obvious thing that stands out is that, yes, we painted the stone fireplace. You can read all about how to paint brick and stone here. Jeremy and I painted this ourselves with an inexpensive sprayer and it was a lot of work, but worth it in my eyes. When we first viewed the home, I disliked the style of the dark stone fireplace so much that I wanted to remove it completely and start over. Now I love it and am amazed what paint can do!
The other big note from this room was the dark carpeted floors and painted walls along with heavy drapes (we actually REALLY opened them for this “before” photo if you can believe that). This is still one of the darker rooms in our home because of a large magnolia tree outside the front window so brightening up the color scheme and lighting up the curtains went a long way. I love the feeling of it now because it’s bright, yet diffused.
This room was tricky because there really was no place for a television. The previous owners had a large TV in the corner you can see there between the fireplace and the window (on a stand) and the sofas were facing the windows. Since we knew we wanted to have this as our TV room, we had the choices of either: a. mounting one on the fireplace stone, b. configuring a TV into the bookshelves or c. facing the sofa away from the fireplace and putting the TV where we put the record player set up.
We decided on option b. And instead of using a TV, we traded it out for a projector set up. When you see the bookshelves below, you can barely even tell a projector comes out of there, as it’s hidden really well. This turned out to be a great choice. Initially we were SO nervous because this is the only TV in our home. But we have never once missed having a “real TV”. This view toward the kitchen changed so much. The kitchen is really blown out in this photo, but if you’re curious how our kitchen started out, you can see it here. I had a really strong visualization of a record player set up being a main element in this room. It’s nostalgic to me and I knew we would use it a LOT for entertaining, Saturday mornings making breakfast together and random “dance parties” with children.
The bookshelves view makes me extra happy! It was one of the first things I painted right after we got the keys to this house. It’s much bigger than it looks in photos! I struggled for a long time over styling these shelves and eventually decided that since we already have rainbow books in another room that I would keep these shelves mostly neutral. It’s also mainly cookbooks since it’s right near the kitchen and we plan meals in here a lot. Jeremy and I both collect cookbooks (although very different ones), so it’s nice to have a mix of our only mutual collection here.
I know painting wood is another subject of debate, but I say love what you love. And I love white shelves!
I always loved this little built-in desk and knew I wanted to keep it. My friend kept telling me to rip it our since it was so “outdated,” but I loved the vintage feel of it. Although we really updated this home, I wanted to maintain some of those 1970s vibes.
You’ll notice that the art is different here than in the photo above. The (new) print here came one day after we shot the rest of the room—haha. But I still wanted to show it because I love it so much. It’s by my good friend Arielle Vey. I love her photography so much, and she has the most gorgeous Instagram account as well.
The gold hardware is from Schoolhouse Electric. I love their hexagon pulls, we used both sizes on these drawers and cabinets. The chair is from Wayfair, but it’s no longer in stock (here’s a similar one).
Augh! The memories we are making in this room are JUST INSANE. It is by far our most used room in the house. We hang out in here on and off all throughout the day (lotsss of playing in here), and at night (after Nova is asleep) it’s where Jeremy and I unwind with a glass of wine and an episode or two of The Office.
First, let’s talk about this fireplace! Painting stone was, is and will always be one of the great debates in home renovations. I’m sure some people will say they liked it better before, and that’s cool with me. I LOVE IT and I am so happy we took the leap to paint it. If you’re considering a DIY project to paint a stone or brick fireplace, read this post first.
For the inside of the fireplace, we were originally going to keep the gas insert it came with. When I called the gas company to get assistance lighting it for the first time (I am super careful and paranoid about all things gas), they very strongly recommended that we upgraded it for both safety and efficiency reasons. After spending wayyyy too much time looking at options we decided to go with a new gas insert that is covered in glass crystals. To use it, you just turn the key (it is not accessible for Nova) and then light the top of the crystals with a lighter. We had a fireplace like this at an Airbnb in Palm Springs and it always stuck with us. I’m really happy with how it turned out.
The macrame I have above the fireplace is this one (I think the plain colored one is out of stock, sorry). Also, I get a lot of questions about the fireplace screen. It’s from Horchow. I searched for SO LONG to find this style in this size, as it was very specific. I went with two white poufs by the fireplace because I was visualizing s’mores and sitting by the fire. We move them around the coffee table when we have a lot of guests over, though. So it’s nice to have some portable seating.
I’ve never been asked more questions about ANYTHING than I have this sectional. It’s from Article and I’ll tell you all about it. We actually have the same style sofas in our living room and after having them for over a year I decided to get the same thing for our den. I debated it for a long time because I do realize it’s slightly lame to get the same sofas in different rooms (haha), but they are SO GOOD that I gave in.
Here’s my quick, honest review of the Sven sectional. I picked our first sofas (they’re in the other living room) on the recommendation of my friend Katie, who said they are great for both kids and pets. I definitely agree with her on this. Our dogs LIVE on this sofa and it gets spilled on and abused on a daily basis. We even spilled some oily Chinese takeout on it when we first got it and it has all cleaned up really well. I wipe it down regularly with just a wet washcloth and it has held up as well as any sofa could. In addition, we had a HUGE dog hair problem with our last sofa and so I love this much more because dog hair doesn’t stick to it or seem to collect nearly as much.
In terms of the style of the sofas, they are pretty “slouchy,” which I love. Highly-tailored sofas age really quick with high traffic (we’ve had quite a few of them over the years) and these really hold their shape over time. I fluff the back pillows once in a while, but otherwise I don’t really think about it.
So, yes, I highly recommend these sofas for anyone who is open to a leather sofa or is specifically looking for something that will hold up with kids and pets. They are also extremely comfortable. This is probably TMI, but when we first got home from China, we were all sick and had bad jet lag and I slept out here a couple nights and it wasn’t bad at all.
OK, I guess I’m done ranting about my love for this sofa. I could have just said, “it’s comfortable and easy to clean.” Haha!
The coffee table is my absolute DREAM coffee table. It’s the shroom coffee table from CB2. It comes unsealed, so you do have to seal it (or be OK with color change). We sealed ours with concrete sealer and it’s been really great. You can also use car wax, but I chose the concrete sealer since it didn’t require as much maintenance. Brass light fixtures are a theme all throughout our home. These lights were actually the first purchase I made for this room. They’re from Lucent Lightshop, one of my favorite small businesses. Their level of quality for real brass fixtures is unmatched (make sure your contractor wears gloves when installing, as they are real brass).
We also painted the wood beams along the ceiling. Funny story, they aren’t wood! They are actually made of plastic and foam. We found that out when we were doing the projector install and it was WAY easier to modify them than we thought (we cut them with a utility knife). I actually think light wood beams would be pretty magical in here as well, but since the ceilings aren’t crazy high, maybe white is best.
Oh! And the shiplap wall. There’s a DIY for that. I didn’t initially want any shiplap in this home because I didn’t think the style fit, but it’s just so damn cozy I couldn’t help myself. Doing just the one wall added just the right amount of texture. Since this room isn’t very colorful, the texture is carrying a lot of the load.
Plants are a big part of this room and most of them are fake. I know some of you have strong feelings about fake plants, but as a new mom I am feeling ZERO shame about them. Plus, this is one of the darker rooms in our home and I have killed a lot more plants in here than other rooms.
My personal rule of thumb is that if I kill a plant in a certain area in my home more than twice (two plants), then I have to replace it with a fake one. I wrote more about fake plants here.
This standing plant stand is from Modernica.  Our large bookshelves holds mostly sentimental items like photo books from vacations, cookbooks and neutral decor pieces like baskets. I recently added a few more family photos here. I also store all my white ceramics and vases here since they look nice as a collection, and a borrow from them anytime we get fresh flowers.
Bookshelf item sources: Eye bookends/Target, Disco Ball, Wooden Checker Game/Schoolhouse Electric.
These binoculars belonged to Jeremy’s grandpa.
This little 1970s rattan rocking horse was a vintage find from my hometown. I impulse bought it since it was a good deal, but it has been one of Nova’s most used and most loved toys. Bonus points that it matches the decor, I guess. She loves to rock on it while we listen to her Chinese songs.
You didn’t think I was going to pass up an opportunity to post a photo of our little cutie, did you?
Our record player set up is one of our most loved indulgences. I love that it is the centerpiece of our room instead of a television. Playing our records seems to be the only time we still get to experience the full album format (as opposed to playlists) which was a big part of our teenage years and something we are not wanting to give up. I did a full post on the turntable and speakers and everything here.
Record table sources: Console Table/West Elm, Palm Tree Print by Moonlight Magpie on Etsy, U-Turn Audio/Orbit Basic Turntable, Speakers/Audioengine, Alvvays record, Wooden Beads.Nova has good taste in music already (actually I don’t think we’ve even played Violents for her, she just loves the purple record).
I love the quote from Dorothy Draper, “I always put in one controversial item, it makes people talk.” I guess our hand chair counts as that? It’s definitely a love it or hate it piece. I get a lot of strong reactions from it. But it is a DREAM chair to me … it looks just like the vintage ones (it’s new from Wayfair, and it’s out of stock, but Anthropologie has a very similar one). It’s so iconic to me!!!!
Our curtains are from Anthropologie. We used them in every room of our home except for the bathrooms and I LOVE them. I find it really difficult to choose curtains and these were the perfect fit.
Oh! And the rug I got on super sale from Anthropologie (here’s a similar style). Choosing a rug for a high traffic room is not easy and I think the quilted cowhide is a great option for a room like this.
Here’s another view of the little desk. I keep my stationery here and letter from my main penpal (my grandmother, Norma).
Well, I hope you have enjoyed this tour! After so many phases and some trial and error I am happy to call this room complete! It was worth all the paint mistakes. Haha!
Coffee table sources: Gold Tray and Vase/Target
A little disco sparkle before I go! People always ask how I get the “disco lights” in my Instagram photos, and all it is is a disco ball (12 inches) sitting on the book shelf opposite the window. At about 7:30 a.m., the room gets the prettiest sparkles. Get your own disco ball, you won’t regret it.
Thank you so much for coming along on this tour! If you have any questions about details, I’ll get them in the comments! xx! Elsie

ABOUT THE NICOYA PENINSULA BEACHES
Choosing a coastal beach area (such as one of Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula beaches) to visit during your Costa Rica trip can be a stressful, time consuming, and pull-your-hair-out frustrating part of vacation planning. As mentioned in our related blog posts The Best Costa Rica Beach: What To Know About The Northern Pacific Guanacaste Beaches and The Best Costa Rica Beach: What To Know About The Central Pacific Beaches, with a total of 1228km of coastline to offer it is no wonder Costa Rica is known for its countless beach destinations. In those posts we focused on seven of Costa Rica’s Northern Pacific beaches in the Guanacaste province stretching from the Papagayo Gulf down to the ever-popular Tamarindo beach, as well as an additional six beaches covering the Central Pacific stretch of coast between Jaco and Dominical. Below, we highlight Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula beaches–an additional nine beaches (some popular and others remote): Samara, Cangrejal, Carrillo, Garza, Guiones (Nosara), Buena Vista, Ostional, Montezuma, and Tambor–each of which are accessible to travellers flying into and/or out of either of the country’s two international airports.
So what is it exactly that makes one beach stand out from the next? After all, we are just talking about sand and water–how different can one stretch of coast be from the next? Actually, quite different. Not only can the texture and colour of sand change from mile to mile, but so too can a number of other beach factors that could impact a visitor’s overall experience. For this reason, we aim to identify some of the advantages and disadvantages of each Costa Rica beach area according to a number of different factors (including the beach’s degree of popularity with tourists, its proximity to towns offering dining, shopping, and tour options, and its distance from the nearest airport, to name a few) in order to help travellers compare the various options and decide on a beach that is perfect for them.
Playa Samara
NICOYA PENINSULA BEACHES: PLAYA SAMARA
Located west of Playa Carrillo and east of Playa Cangrejal along Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula.
Distance from San Jose: 235km (approximately 4 hours) Closest Town: Samara (large town) Beach Status: public beach Type of Sand: light brown sand, smooth beach
Selling points
For those travellers looking to visit a popular beach town, Playa Samara is a great choice. This town is one of the most vibrant and populated areas on the Nicoya Peninsula, especially when compared to its neighbouring beaches (Carrillo, Cangrejal, Buena Vista, and Garza). Travellers who choose to stay at accommodations in town have access to a variety of dining and shopping options–the majority of which are situated within walking distance to the beach.
Playa Samara is a long beach. Although it is popular and attracts quite a few visitors, its length allows visitors to spread out down the coast providing beach-goers with the feeling that the area is less busy than it actually is.
Travellers looking to participate in a number of tours/activities during their time at the beach will find a variety in Samara. Most of the tour operators in this town include round-trip transportation to/from Samara accommodations. For this reason, Samara is a good choice for those individuals who will not have a rental vehicle and who would prefer to stay in an area where getting to/from tour/activity, dining, and shopping options is possible via foot or a short taxi ride.
Playa Samara offers a beautiful beach and the next best thing to white sand–a light brown, smooth, and sandy beach. This beach provides a shallow area by the coast to wade in and waves to play in.
The Playa Samara community promotes healthy living through its abundance of health stores, markets, and organic offerings. If naturopathy and/or living a clean lifestyle interests you, you’ll likely want to check out some of Playa Samara’s specialty shops.
For all that the town of Samara offers, the area maintains a relaxed and low-key vibe; fortunately, the Playa Samara region is not overly loud or crowded, despite being one of Costa Rica’s up and coming beach destinations that grows in popularity each year.
Nearby Playa Carrillo is an excellent place to take in a beautiful sunset!
Disadvantages
Playa Samara can be a busy beach. Although not as busy as a few other beaches located along Costa Rica’s Northern Pacific and Central Pacific coasts, given that most of the tours that service the entire coastal region between Playa Ostional and Playa Carrillo run to and from the town of Samara, the beach attracts travellers to the region on a continued basis (including those who choose to stay in the town of Samara directly, as well as those who choose to stay in neighbouring areas but opt to visit Playa Samara during the day). For this reason, Playa Samara can get quite busy during the high/summer season when the country experiences a higher volume of tourism traffic.
Given its popularity, Samara is more “the place to be” than “the place to go to get away from it all”. The area draws a mixed crowd–a young, single’s population drawn to the area for the beach, together with family travellers impressed by the variety of tours and activities available (especially activities that children can participate in). For those travellers who would prefer a less populated town area and/or beach, unfortunately Samara does not support this type of setting; ventures outside of town to more secluded beach areas would be required to accommodate this preference.
Recommendations
The Samara region is known for offering a lot, not a little. If easy access to accommodation, tour/activity, dining, and shopping options is what you are looking for, than the Samara area would be the prime Nicoya Peninsula coastal destination for you. Alternatively, travellers looking to stay at a remote location where they can truly get away from it all (avoiding other travellers, local businesses, and tourism overall) would likely be put off by everything that the Samara region has going on. Although Samara offers a lot without forcing it in travellers’ faces (the presence of tourism in the area is apparent but not annoying), the fact of the matter is, travellers who would rather stay within the boundaries of their chosen accommodation with little interest in venturing out to explore its surroundings would not benefit from the plethora of detail that is available to be experienced in the Samara region. In this case, a different coastal area would be recommended.
Extra notes
Recommended day trips from Playa Samara include visits to Playa Carrillo, Playa Cangrejal, Playa Garza, and Playa Guiones (Nosara).
Playa Cangrejal
NICOYA PENINSULA BEACHES: PLAYA CANGREJAL
Located west of Playa Samara and east of Playa Buena Vista along Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula.
Distance from San Jose: 235km (approximately 4 hours) Closest Town: Samara (large town) Beach Status: public beach Type of Sand: light brown sand, smooth beach
Selling points
Ideal for those travellers who are looking for a quiet beach to relax at without the distraction of other visitors.
Given that Playa Cangrejal is located a hop, skip, and throw away from Playa Samara (the former is situated about a five-minute drive north of the latter), the majority of the selling points described for Playa Samara above apply to Playa Cangrejal as well. Some of these selling points include access to a vibrant beach community with a low-key vibe, specialty stores, and tours/activities that include transportation to/from area hotels.
Unlike Playa Samara, Playa Cangrejal is far less visited. Although it is close in proximity to the town of Samara, it feels light-years away, as Playa Cangrejal is a sliver of Costa Rica coastline that usually provides privacy and solace. Easily accessible via a short drive, taxi ride, or bike ride by either those who opt to stay in hotels located in the town of Samara directly or in accommodations situated on the outskirts of town, Playa Cangrejal is our go-to spot for taking a quick dip in the Pacific Ocean whenever we are in the region.
Playa Cangrejal is one of only a few beaches situated along Costa Rica’s Pacific coast that is lined with palm trees–trees typically only seen on the Caribbean side of the country. This makes Playa Cngrejal the perfect spot to hang up a hammock and rest the day away!
Disadvantages
Given Playa Cangrejal’s separation from the town of Samara, there are no restaurants, bathrooms, or shops accessible from the beach. A quick drive, taxi ride, or bike ride into the town of Samara would be required in order to access any of these amenities.
Recommendations
A visit to Playa Cangrejal is recommended to travellers who plan to stay in Samara but who wish to relax at a beach other than the area’s principal beach: Playa Samara. Fortunately, a number of hotels exist outside of Playa Samara’s town center, including those located northwest of town, which are close in proximity to Playa Cangrejal. Travellers who opt to stay at those hotels may access Playa Cangrejal on foot, however all visitors to the Samara region may experience Playa Cangrejal via a quick drive, taxi ride, or bike ride from town.
Extra notes
Recommended day trips from Playa Cangrejal include visits to Playa Samara, Playa Carrlllo and Playa Guiones (Nosara).
Playa Carrillo
NICOYA PENINSULA BEACHES: PLAYA CARRILLO
Located northwest of the southern tip of the peninsula and east of Playa Samara along Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula.
Distance from San Jose: 240km (approximately 4 hours and 15 minutes) Closest Town: Samara (large town) Beach Status: public beach Type of Sand: light brown sand, smooth beach
Selling points
Playa Carrillo has (in our opinion!) one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful beaches. Not only does the beach offer some of the lightest sand you can find in the country, but its more popular neighbour (Playa Samara) helps mask Playa Carrillo as a less-visited gem.
Playa Carrillo is a long beach. Although it is moderately popular and attracts visitors at certain times of the year, its length allows visitors to spread out down the coast providing beach-goers with the feeling that the area is less busy than it actually is.
With a coast that seems to never end, the same could be said about parking opportunities. Travellers visiting Playa Carrillo for the day with their own rental vehicles can park along the side of a long road that runs parallel to the beach.
Playa Carrillo is one of only a few beaches situated along Costa Rica’s Pacific coast that is lined with palm trees–trees typically only seen on the Caribbean side of the country. This makes Playa Carrillo the perfect spot to hang up a hammock and rest the day away!
Disadvantages
The Playa Carrillo area does not offer travellers a wide variety of tour options (when compared to the countless activity possibilities offered in nearby Samara). For this reason, it is not the best beach location for those travellers who wish to participate in many tours and activities during their time at the beach.
A visit to Playa Carrillo is recommended to those travellers with a rental vehicle and/or those travellers who plan to use taxi services to get to/from their accommodation and the beach, or else to/from their accommodation and Samara in order to participate in the majority of tours that the area offers (transportation to/from accommodations in Playa Carrillo is not regularly included with tours run from the Samara area).
Given Playa Carrillo’s separation from the town of Samara, there are no restaurants, bathrooms, or shops accessible from the beach. A quick drive, taxi ride, or bike ride into the town of Samara would be required in order to access any of these amenities.
Recommendations
A visit to Playa Carrillo is recommended to travellers who plan to stay in Samara but who wish to relax at a beach other than the area’s principal beach: Playa Samara. Fortunately, a number of hotels exist outside of Playa Samara’s town center, including those located southeast of town, which are close in proximity to Playa Carrillo. Travellers who opt to stay at those hotels (as well as travellers who wish to make a day trip to/from Samara) may access Playa Carrillo via a quick drive or taxi ride from town.
Extra notes
Recommended day trips from Playa Carrillo include visits to Playa Samara and Playa Guiones (Nosara).
Playa Garza
NICOYA PENINSULA BEACHES: PLAYA GARZA
Located west of Playa Buena Vista and south of Playa Guiones (Nosara) along Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula.
Distance from San Jose: 245km (approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes) Closest Town: Samara (large town), Nosara (small town) Beach Status: public beach Type of Sand: light brown sand, smooth beach
Selling points
For travellers looking for remoteness (i.e., a beach area offering few dining and tour options) they can find it in Playa Garza. Everything else a visitor might need can be found in nearby Playa Samara (the largest town in the area).
Playa Garza is ideal for those travellers who are looking for a quiet beach to relax at without the distraction of other visitors.
Playa Garza offers a beautiful and quiet beach boasting light brown sand, shaded areas, hardly any debris or garbage, and a child’s playground to boot!
Disadvantages
The Playa Garza area is simply a stretch of Nicoya Peninsula coastline (it is a “blink and you’ll miss it” type of place)–it does not offer a town community, accommodation options, or a plethora of tour/activity offerings.
Recommendations
A visit to Playa Garza is perfectly planned as a day trip (not an overnight visit); it is recommended to travellers with a rental vehicle and/or travellers who plan to use taxi services to get to/from their accommodation and this beach. It is also recommended that travellers have a rental vehicle or else plan to use taxi services to get themselves to/from Playa Samara in order to access dining and shopping options, as well as to participate in the majority of tours that the area offers.
Extra notes
Recommended day trips from Playa Garza include visits to Playa Samara, Playa Carrlllo and Playa Guiones (Nosara).
Playa Guiones (Nosara)
NICOYA PENINSULA BEACHES: PLAYA GUIONES (NOSARA)
Located north of Playa Garza and south of Playa Ostional along Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula.
Distance from San Jose: 250km (approximately 4 hours and 45 minutes) Closest Town: Nosara (small town), Samara (large town) Beach Status: public beach Type of Sand: light brown sand, smooth beach
Selling points
More than anything else, Playa Guiones (Nosara) is a small surf and yoga town, boasting some of the best surf breaks in the entire country. For anyone looking to surf or practice yoga on a budget and/or with an interest in visiting a small surf/yoga community (as opposed to Costa Rica’s larger surf towns offering more developed and higher quality sites) Playa Guiones (Nosara) is the correct place for you.
The Playa Guiones (Nosara) area is home to primarily economy and standard accommodations that cater to budget-minded travellers. Younger visitors who intend to spend the day at the beach or in the water (not at a hotel) are often pleased by the plethora of inexpensive lodging options.
As one of Costa Rica’s most relaxed yet social beach towns, the vibe at Playa Nosara is truly “pura vida”; if hanging out at the beach with friends, strolling through town in your bathing suit, and giving the surf a go is what you long for, these opportunities present themselves in Nosara.
Disadvantages
Given its small and tight-knit coastal community, Playa Guiones (Nosara) tends to attract generation Y and Z travellers looking for sun, sand, and surf. For this reason, although there are many activities that children and older adults can participate in, families tend to prefer the more family-friendly feel of nearby Playa Samara to the young crowd that gathers in Playa Guiones (Nosara).
Since Playa Guiones (Nosara) tends to attract younger travellers, the town offers more economy and standard accommodation options than superior and resort-quality stays. For honeymooners and/or travellers looking for higher-class travel experiences, where Playa Guiones (Nosara) succeeds in penny-pinching, it fails in the romance and luxury departments.
Like Playa Samara, Playa Guiones (Nosara) can be a busy beach. Given that the surf community draws in surfers from all over the world, travellers flock to the region on a continued basis. For this reason, Playa Guiones (Nosara) can get quite busy during the high/summer season when the country experiences a higher volume of tourism traffic. Fortunately, Nosara’s small town size and moderately remote location along the coast keep it less busy than Samara year round.
While the Playa Guiones (Nosara) area does offer some tour/activity options, it offers less than what travellers can find in nearby Samara. For this reason, it is not the best beach location for those travellers who wish to participate in many tours and activities during their time at the beach (transportation to/from Nosara is not regularly included with tours run from the Samara area).
Recommendations
If a small-town beach feel complete with a handful of surf and yoga opportunities is what you are looking for than Playa Guiones (Nosara) would be one of two prime Nicoya Peninsula beach locations for you (you may also want to consider Playa Montezuma). Otherwise, if a more organized and developed beach area interests you (i.e., one that offers more things to do, more things to see, and schedules you can rely on), a different coastal area would be the smarter choice.
Since some hotel options are located near the beach, it is not required that all visitors have a rental vehicle. However, since the Playa Guiones (Nosara) area offers some, but not many, dining, shopping, and tour options, it is often recommended that travellers staying in the Playa Guiones (Nosara) area make plans to visit nearby Playa Samara in order to access additional amenities. In this case, having a rental vehicle is advantageous as travellers can drive themselves to/from Playa Guiones (Nosara) and nearby beach towns, however travellers without a rental vehicle can simply plan to use taxi services to get to/from where they wish to go.
Extra notes
Recommended day trips from Playa Guiones (Nosara) include visits to Playa Ostional, Playa Garza, Playa Samara, and Playa Carrlllo.
Playa Buena Vista
NICOYA PENINSULA BEACHES: PLAYA BUENA VISTA
Located west of Playa Cangrejal and east of Playa Garza along Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula.
Distance from San Jose: 240km (approximately 4 hours and 15 minutes) Closest Town: Samara (large town) Beach Status: public beach Type of Sand: brown sand, moderately smooth beach (debris from the estuary present)
Selling points
Given that Playa Buena Vista is located a hop, skip, and throw away from Playa Samara (the former is situated about a ten-minute drive north of the latter), the majority of the selling points described for Playa Samara above apply to Playa Buena Vista as well. Some of these selling points include access to a vibrant beach community with a low-key vibe, specialty stores, and tours/activities that include transportation to/from area hotels.
Unlike Playa Samara, Playa Buena Vista is far less visited. Although it is close in proximity to the town of Samara, it feels light-years away, as Playa Buena Vista is a sliver of Costa Rica coastline that usually provides privacy and solace. Easily accessible via a short drive, taxi, or bike ride to either those who opt to stay in hotels located in the town of Samara directly or those who opt to stay in accommodations situated on the outskirts of town, Playa Buena Vista is an unadvertised hot spot most often visited by locals.
Disadvantages
Travellers who opt to visit Playa Buena Vista should do so at their own risk as there are crocodiles in the region. Given the coast’s design, the crossing of an estuary is required in order to access the strip of beach that exists between the estuary and the ocean. Upon arrival at Playa Buena Vista there are warning signs about crocodiles in the estuary, and we recommend opting not to visit the beach for this reason. In our opinion, spending time at Playa Buena Vista is simply not work the risk of crossing the estuary (or worse, getting stranded on the beach between the estuary and the ocean if a crocodile appears in the estuary partway through your visit).
Recommendations
As noted above, we maintain that spending time at Playa Buena Vista is simply not worth the risk of crossing the estuary; visiting any other coastal area described on this page would be the smarter choice.
Extra notes
Recommended day trips from Playa Buena Vista include visits to Playa Samara, Playa Cangrejal, Playa Garza, and Carrillo.
Playa Ostional
NICOYA PENINSULA BEACHES: PLAYA OSTIONAL
Located north of Playa Guiones (Nosara) and south of Playa Tamarindo along Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula.
Distance from San Jose: 265km (approximately 5 hours) Closest Town: Nosara (small town), Samara (large town) Beach Status: public beach Type of Sand: brown-to-black sand (depending on the stretch of beach), rough beach
Selling points
Playa Ostional’s greatest selling point is its connection to turtle arribadas (“arrivals”) where turtles approach the beach to lay their eggs in the sand. For this reason, the Playa Ostional’s appeal is not the beach itself, rather the turtles.
Disadvantages
The Playa Ostional area is simply a stretch of Nicoya Peninsula coastline–it does not offer a town community, accommodation options, or a plethora of tour/activity offerings (with the exception of turtle nesting tours, which is the main attraction of the area during particular times of the year).
Playa Ostional is not the most attractive beach along the coast. Although not a dirty beach, the rocks and debris spread out across the area prevent it from offering a smooth groundwork that travellers could walk along barefoot. For this reason (and the fact that plenty of light sand and smooth beaches exist merely an hour up the coast), Playa Ostional’s rugged beach fails to impress.
Recommendations
Unless something specific offered in the Playa Ostional region area catches your eye (such as a turtle nesting tour), an overnight stay (or a longer period of time spent in the area) would be better spent elsewhere; the quality of travel experience that can be obtained via visits to other coastal areas is worth looking into.
Although the Playa Ostional region draws in travellers for the purpose of seeing turtles, skip the turtle nesting tour. Ricky and I refuse to participate in one, and not because we have no interest in learning about turtles, but rather because we love turtles enough to leave them alone while they undergo their nesting habits. Tourism in the Playa Ostional region (and in other turtle nesting areas of the country) has a negative impact on arribadas, and in our opinion, no “selfie” photo with sea turtles in the background is worth endangering the species. We hope you feel the same!
Extra notes
A recommended day trip from Playa Ostional includes a visit to Playa Guiones (Nosara).
Playa Montezuma
NICOYA PENINSULA BEACHES: PLAYA MONTEZUMA
Located south of Playa Tambor and north of the southern tip of the peninsula along Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula.
Distance from San Jose: 175km (approximately 5 hours, including time for the ferry crossing but excluding time spent waiting for the ferry to depart, as this amount of time would be determined by the time of arrival at the port and the ferry schedule) Closest Town: Montezuma (small town), Cobano (large town) Beach Status: public beach Type of Sand: light brown sand, moderately smooth beach disrupted by rocks and occasional debris
Selling points
More than anything else, Playa Montezuma is a small surf and yoga town. For anyone looking to surf or practice yoga on a budget and/or with an interest in visiting a small surf/yoga community (as opposed to Costa Rica’s larger surf towns offering more developed and higher quality sites) Playa Montezuma is the correct place for you.
The Playa Montezuma area is home to both economy accommodations and higher-quality eco-resorts (typically marketed as “retreats”). Since the area’s surf and yoga culture draw in a wide variety of travellers, younger visitors are often pleased by the availability of inexpensive lodging, just as couples/honeymooners and retreat-goers are satisfied by the region’s touch of luxury.
The Playa Montezuma community promotes healthy living through its abundance of health stores, markets, and organic offerings. If naturopathy and/or living a clean lifestyle interests you, you’ll likely want to check out some of Playa Montezuma’s specialty shops.
As one of Costa Rica’s most relaxed beach towns, the vibe at Playa Montezuma is truly “pura vida”; if laziness is what you long for, you’ll find it in Montezuma.
Disadvantages
The Playa Montezuma area does not offer travellers a wide variety of tour options (when compared to the countless activity possibilities offered in Samara, or at other Costa Rican beach destinations). For this reason, it is not the best beach location for those travellers who wish to participate in many tours and activities during their time at the beach.
Given the laidback and Bohemian feel of Playa Montezuma (a product of the relaxed attitude of the area’s inhabitants), Playa Montezuma is far more an area to visit if you would prefer to plan your trip as you go and not in advance. Operations in town move at a snail’s pace, and while some travellers love this about the area (pura vida, mae!), others feel more comfortable visiting areas where tourism is practiced in a more organized manner. For this reason, families (especially those with young children) tend to prefer the more family-friendly feel of Playa Samara to the laissez-faire atmosphere generated in Playa Montezuma.
Recommendations
If a small-town beach feel complete with a handful of surf and yoga opportunities is what you are looking for than Playa Montezuma would be one of two prime Nicoya Peninsula beach locations for you (you may also want to consider Playa Guiones). Otherwise, if a more organized and developed beach area interests you (i.e., one that offers more things to do, more things to see, and schedules you can rely on), a different coastal area would be the smarter choice.
Extra notes
A recommended day trip from Playa Montezuma includes a visit to Playa Tambor.
Playa Tambor
NICOYA PENINSULA BEACHES: PLAYA TAMBOR
Located north of Playa Montezuma and south of Paquera along Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula.
Distance from San Jose: 155km (approximately 5 hours and 45 minutes, including time for the ferry crossing but excluding time spent waiting for the ferry to depart, as this amount of time would be determined by the time of arrival at the port and the ferry schedule) Closest Town: Paquera (large town) Beach Status: public beach Type of Sand: brown sand, moderately smooth beach
Selling points
Ideal for those travellers who are looking for a quiet beach to relax at without the distraction of other visitors.
Disadvantages
The Playa Tambor area is home to very few hotels as the coastal area is primarily consumed by the Barcelo Resort (and little else). For this reason, visitors who wish to stay at a hotel in the area have a limited selection of accommodation options to choose from.
Playa Tambor offers very few tour/activity options–far less than can be found in nearby Playa Montezuma. For this reason, it is not the best beach location for those travellers who wish to participate in many tours and activities during their time at the beach (transportation to/from Playa Tambor is not regularly included with tours run from the Playa Montezuma area).
Recommendations
Since some hotel options are located near the beach, it is not required that all visitors have a rental vehicle. However, since the Playa Tambor area offers few dining, shopping, and tour/activity options, it is often recommended that travellers staying in the Playa Tambor area make plans to visit nearby towns (such as Paquera or Cobano) or Playa Montezuma in order to access additional amenities. In this case, having a rental vehicle is advantageous as travellers can drive themselves to/from Playa Montezuma and other areas, however travellers without a rental vehicle can simply plan to use taxi services to get to/from where they wish to go.
Extra notes
Visitors staying at the Barcelo Resort have access to Playa Tambor.
A recommended day trip from Playa Tambor includes a visit to Playa Montezuma.
