For the ask game, 15, 16, 21?

15) why did you start writing?

Not on purpose. I joined a discord server where people role played, and decided to try it in an attempt to get to know some of them. It worked, and I spent so much timewriting replies, and then sometimes I had a whole idea in my head that I wanted to do so I wrote it down, and then I started writing fanfiction for my role plays. 

16) are there any characters who haunt you?

Hmm I’m not entirely sure I understand the question, but I guess Girl/Val?

She was supposed to be a character for a side plot in a role play, but then I made her backstory too sad and now I just want to save her. I wrote a thing for Christmas  about her getting adopted and maybe hopefully I’ll write a whole thing with it.

21) what do you think when you read over your older work?

That it’s really good, compared to what I felt about it at the time. I used to feel like I couldn’t string together a coherent sentence, but it was really completely readable, and pretty much equal in quality to what I write now.

When I look at the translations I did, which is what I was proud of even at the time, I think How?? and envy that talent because I haven’t been able to make something that compares in ages.

The Timewriter - “Photographic Life (Area 51 mix)” Plastic City Reconstructed Song released in 1998. Mix released in 1999. Tech-House

Frankfurt’s Jean F. Cochois, who is primarily known as The Timewriter, is a guy who consistently made music from the 80s up until his sudden silence in 2017. Originally working in the world of EBM (industrial dance music), he would shift toward house music in the mid-90s, and eventually became a leading pioneer in the genre of tech-house. With an inimitable production style that reflects his musically eclectic upbringing, Cochois was able to rise to the top of the list of German electronic producers and was one of Berlin dance label Plastic City’s most treasured assets.

In 1998, Cochois released his second full-length album as The Timewriter, the highly touted Jigsaw Pieces, which proved to be equal parts tech-house and deep house. The album contains a deep house track called “Photographic Life,” which, about a month after the album’s release, was remixed into a tech-house jam for a Timewriter 12-inch called More Pieces. The following year, Plastic City included the remix on their uncredited mix CD, Plastic City Reconstructed. 

The “Photographic Life” remix isn’t just a tech-house song though; it’s a deep tech-house song (or a tech-deep house song, I guess?), which isn’t really a thing, but it’s a thing here, because it doesn’t just match a scratchy 4/4 techno kickdrum and smacking clap to a house vibe, it matches that kickdrum and clap to a deep house vibe, like a really deep deep house vibe. I won’t say that that’s a revolutionary concept, but it’s definitely not widely applied. And boy, does it unexpectedly work well here.

A different way of life; I’ll take you there 

Cochois understands how much room that punching kickdrum and clap takes up on his track (a lot), so while they pummel beneath the ambiently chilly and bare, deep-sea-diving atmospherics, he fits in small glimmers of sound between those drums and claps. Light popping sounds, a vocal sample, a sharp, back-masked(?) string, a touch of something metallic and shimmery. But then listen to how intricate this song manages to sound towards the end after its breakdown. What were once calm atmospherics lying at the top now come with much more intensified, slightly distorted synths, and despite their intensification, they still don’t interfere with the power of the kickdrum and the clap, which keep on pounding away underneath, pretty unobstructed. And, if you’re listening with headphones, you can hear the lingering, residual reverb from those synths at the top simultaneously and separately seep into the left and right audio channels, proceeding to float slowly down to the track’s basin.

What a tremendous piece of dance music.
