The Legend of Vox Machina: Season One and Two Post Mortem
So, season 1 and 2 of The Legend of Vox Machina are now out.
Let's do a post mortem on them.
One caveat: the CRew has said in interviews and behind the scenes videos that they wanted to take future events into account when writing early seasons. This means some things in the first twenty-four episodes aren't meant to pay off until later, or won't make sense except in hindsight. Especially if the story's significantly changed from the stream.
However, keeping that in mind, I think we can still look at what the episodes we've seen so far have done right and wrong on their own.
So, let's get to it!!
Episodes 1-2: The Terror of Tal'dorei
Given that the kickstarter for this series was only meant to pay for a thirty minute special that grew to an hour long season opening, I had certain expectations going in.
Basically, pilot energy.
And I was not disappointed. That isn't necessarily bad, but you could detect an extra hard push in this series' beginning. A push to prove itself, establish that this was a capital 'A' adult animation, and that it had somewhere to go from season one. Again not bad....except that some of that energy may have overstayed its welcome at this point.
But we'll get there.
First, let's talk about the good.
The Good
The VAs of the main cast are of course spot the fuck on, which was a given. They are all talented professionals who made these characters, after all. But it was still a thrill hearing them voice VM again after they'd been playing as the Nein and the Hells for so long.
The guests are no slouch either: David Tenant is in turn affably and menacingly Scottish, Indira Varma and Stephanie Beatriz are perfect as Allura and Kima, and Khary Payton, in very little time, portrays Uriel as a regal and noble ruler. Tony Hale makes for a great red herring, and Sunil Malhotra brings a warm, playful yet sincere portrayal of Shaun Gilmore to absolute life. As much passion and verve as Matt poured into the character, I'm glad he handed the role off to someone who's taking such good care of it.
Emon is beautiful. No notes whatsoever. The palace, the city, Gilmore's Glorious Goods....all of it is like a dream come to life. Art team is killing it.
Character design? For these characters? Pretty spot on. Everyone has great, economical designs that are still very recognizable as the Vox Machina we know and love.
Neil's music is sweeping and gorgeous. He brings such a grandiose sense of scale to the world; a scale which Exandria deserved, but I wasn't sure she would be able to get. His use of Your Turn to Role in the soundtrack is always fun to pick out. And last but not least, the themes of the Iron Storm fights in particular serve to get the blood pumping.
Said fights are also a blast. The second one obviously wins out just by nature of it being more of a contested battle, but both have just the right amount of a struggle to make the survival and eventual victory of Vox Machina feel earned. Everyone building on each other's efforts, one after another, in order to bring down Brimscythe once and for all is just perfection. That was the moment it really felt like Vox Machina had truly come alive in this new medium. It's still so much fun to look back on.
One thing the show devotes itself to frequently (sometimes very well and sometimes quite ham-fistedly) is set up for future events. In this instance, I think this was done quite well in the décor of Krieg's abode, and in the orbs (that, according to the cast, were straight out of the home game) that tie the rest of the Conclave to Vox Machina, and specifically Keyleth to Raishan, for future conflicts.
Alright, so? On to the shitty bits.
The Shitty Bits.
In all honesty, there's not much to write here if only because the two parter that starts things off is such a short, self-contained story. Most of my complaints here are nitpicky and come down to personal preference. My bigger problems are things that have carried over into the series at large, and, as of my writing this, either have not gotten better or have gotten better only a negligible amount. These I'll be addressing in full later, so I won't waste time on them here.
Nitpick: Allura's line about capturing the creature is a little awkward. I would switch it around.
From:
"With all due respect Sir Fince, we don't even know what the creature is. Demon? Elemental? And how do you propose we capture it?"
To:
"And how do you propose we capture it? With all due respect Sir Fince, we don't even know what the creature is. Demon? Elemental?"
And of course the "dumbass" remains unsaid, because Allura, in every iteration, is classy like that.
Nitpick: I'm disappointed that when Vax was accused of being "Too weak to tickle [his] own pickle." Pike didn't pipe up from the other side of the bar with: "No he's not!"
Nitpick: The bit with the sandwich feels very contrived in order to get Vax a toothpick and ruin said sandwich. Just saying, could've done it in a way that felt more natural. Or done something else entirely.
A couple of times in Season One Grog get's knocked out of the fight early. This could be an example of the Worf Effect, where a threat is made to look particularly dangerous if it takes out the big/strong/especially skilled guy in the group. However, if you want to pull this but you don't give the character a chance to prove how strong they are in a challenging battle before you do, it's not going to be incredibly effective. (We only had the tavern brawl before this, and just about everyone had a good showing there.) And even if you do give the character that chance, depending on how you use this trope, it can come off as cheap.
This comes up again later, so I'm just pointing it out now.
This next bit is one that'll come up again as well, so I feel like I need to bring this up here before getting into it again later; Scanlan is the first to declare they're killing the dragon. It's not unlikely that he's just reading the room and realizes that everybody else is turning to the idea already.....but he doesn't try to dissuade them or try to get out of it himself.
This is important for season 2.

ANIME & MANGA I HAVE BINGED IN THE LAST MONTH: May 2021
I've Been Hunting Slimes for the Past 300 Years and Now Ive Maxed Out My Level: incredibly long name aside, cute af slice of life that suffers Same Face Syndrome. I'm still happy to watch it because of how feel good and fluffy it is though, Im probably gonna forget about it in two or three years tho. 8/10.
Don't Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro: I found out this was a webcomic first and suddenly all the HORNINESS made so much more sense. A Femdom, Degradation, Humiliation, Dacryphilia Bullies to Lovers story disguised as a high school rom-com which, I'm not going to lie, misses SKEEVY CITY by mere inches on a regular basis. However, I'm a Dom/Switch and this entire relationship sets off my dom brain center like New York City just shy of midnight. So if you're into that sort of scene, this anime is for you. If not, it's still fascinating but you're probably gonna be a little put off by how mean the Girl!Bully is to the guy MC. Unless you find out something about yourself, in which case, congrats! Stay safe, sane, consensual, and learn about the traffic light system on top of safe words, I promise you'll have a better life in general after that. Still Ongoing, currently 10/10.
Fruits Basket: IM GONNA CRY I LOVE THIS ANIME SO MUCH???? The original anime came out when I was in... I think middle school and my parents were really strict on what I watched so I never got to experience the first wave and I never bothered to watch the show ever after I moved out of the house years later. However, now that I'm much older I honestly can say this is one of my favorite anime to date, and all the characters are charming, lovable, with their own problems that I can connect to or sympathize with, and I love the MC which is always a treat tbh. Except Akito. Akito can suck a sandpaper dick. I'm only on S2 tho so no spoilers! Anime 11/10.
Monster Girl Doctor: went in thinking it was gonna be a monster girl who's a doctor with a homoerotic assistant (her name is SAPPHY okay sue me for thinking it) and ended up watching the entire dubbed harem series. Honestly, I've seen worse and this one has consistent follow-through on interesting characters and backstory enough for me to shove aside the blatant under-monstrousness of the female monsters and the harem-ness of everything else. Dubbing is honestly really good, which is a treat, and the monster designs are not the worst and the MC is tolerable. Honestly, I don't mind having watched it! The mix of cgi and the traditional animation together work pretty strangely though, and it often doesn't flow super well. 7.5/10
So I'm a Spider, So What: Dubbed version which honestly isn't that bad. Took me a bit to get into it, but after realizing that it's got a mismatched timeline a la The Witcher, it made so much more sense. Heavily done in cgi, and you can definitely tell between the 2D and 3D animations, but not the worst in the world. I went in not expecting much but it ended up being an Issekai I can stand and even enjoy. On god has a decent story... with the spider. I'd be a liar if I didnt say I skipped some of the human parts just to get back to the best part of the show. 8/10.
Somali and the Forest Spirit: I'm so fucking nostalgic for this thing it makes me want to go and hug my dad. About a human girl under threat of being eaten with a monster-dominated world. Very obvious "humans fear what they don't understand" message but instead of the humans learning tolerance it's what happens when they get annihilated first so like, kudos for the mangaka for having the guts to do that. I cried like a baby regularly. It's really good, I watched the dub and ID WATCH IT AGAIN!!! 9/10.
To Your Eternity: Oh my god. O h my g o d. Fell in love on the first episode, ngl. About if an immortal being learned how to be a person from scratch. I love it. HOWEVER. Keep a box of tissues on you at all times because you're gonna need them. I'm only on EP7 because that's all that's out right now but just know. I love it. Not for everyone but certainly for my "what do we define as human and the human condition" ass. 12/10.
Those Snow White Notes: A sports anime without any sports. About shamisen playing which is cool because I never realized how cool this instrument was??? Its neat af. OP1&2 are by Burnout Syndrom so know theyre fire. Gonna be real, its pretty alright, but not extraordinary. You can tell they were using the characters as archetypes rather than actually characters which kinda kills a lot of the emotional value you could've had, but I'm still gonna watch it. It doesn't make me cringe as hard as other sports anime tho so I consider it toptier in that regards but if you're a big sports anime fan you might be bummed out by it. Every single musical performance is INCREDIBLE tho. A solid 8/10.
Toilet Bound Hanako-kun: THE ART OMFG IT'S SO GORGEOUS. Listen, if you took coptic markers and gave them an animation budget with some manga panel direction thrown in there, that's this anime. It's beautiful. Gorgeous. I'm in love with the aesthetic every second. Story? Really good. Characters? I love the MC and his evil little twin brother asshat. Demons? Not super imaginative but I'm carrying on happy as can be anyways. Dubbing? A bit shaky at times but I found the voices charming if a little off for some of them. I'm already waiting for the second season with popcorn at the ready. 10/10.
Prison School: I watched this directly after Hanako-kun and it was like I got slapped in the face by sweaty unwashed titties and some fedora wearing schmuck's piss kink. No character is likable or redeemable. I finished it, but at what cost? 2/10 and only because a character shit his pants and I laughed.
Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle: watched this right after Prison School and it was NECESSARY tbh. Its so CUTE and honestly, im not even kidding you, the fucking funniest anime I've seen in months. I watched the dub and the VAs are having the time of their lives working on this anime not just giving it their all but literally just going ham. Its great. If I read this im sure id be bored outta my mind but the VAs giving it a joyous performance make it an insta fave for me tbh. 9/10.
Sk8 the Infinity: i watched the dub with my bro and I can confirm that its a spectacular show because we both loved it and we have vastly different tastes. Incredibly SUSPENSFUL AND STRESSFUL for an anime about skateboarding but we finished it in a single sitting tbh. The last episode is not dubbed for some reason but we still loved it. Like if Free! was less obnoxious but the only fan-service here is Joe ♡ a beefcake who owns my lesbian heart. I think there's exactly one named female character tho and I legit couldn't tell you what it was if there was a gun to my head. So, over all, 9.5/10.
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: I'm going to be entirely honest, I went in thinking it was going to be a boring isekai of no value. I was right about the Isekai part. It was honestly pretty interesting and focused on nation building like you're playing civilization rather than the usual "Get Stronger" narrative or "Get Some Pussy" narrative most isekais take which is delightfully refreshing. Granted there are flavors of that in this which means it doesn't alienate the big isekai watchers out there, but it's not the whole dish and it doesn't make me want to cringe the same way others do. You've got a slime MC just vibing and building a nation of monsters nbd. Does lose points for making the female monsters more humanoid than their male counterparts but makes them back by only doing perfunctory fan-service and nothing that makes me want to cry... except the butt sumo episode but in fairness it was all a terrible dream. Literally, the MC refuses to dream anymore after that. solid animation, decent voice acting, decent story, made me realize how HUGE this is in the Light Novel community???? There's like 18 fucking novels and that's WILD. 8.5/10.
MANGA:
Spirit Photographer Saburo Kono: a one shot special by the mangaka of The Promised Neverland! Honestly a really delicate touch of both super creepy and really touching, and I'm not gonna lie I'm bummed that this isn't a bigger project but the single chapter makes it a good taste for their style. I've been wondering if I wanna read/watch The Promised Neverland and now I think I will. 10/10
Deranged Detective Ron Kamonohashi: from the mangaka of Hitman Reborn comes this Sherlock and Watson derivative! Not even 20 chapters out yet with a sort of spotty schedule, I honestly love it even thought it's exactly as you expect. HOWEVER. Kamonohashi the "Sherlock" character uses mental pressure to kill all confirmed murderers and it's up to Toto the "Watson" character to save all those people before Kamonohashi kills them! It's just recently introduced a "Moriarty" family of crime lords (not a big spoiler don't worry it was obvious) so the tension surrounding Ron's past is amping up rn. Personally, I think the art is GORGEOUS, the characters engaging, and the story quick enough to keep my interest. Most mysteries are solved within a chapter or two so you're not stuck 20 chapters into one locked room mystery which is just peachy tbh. RN, 10/10. If this gets an anime, I anticipate a legion of fangirls who ship the two main characters along with their many friends. I've been alive too long to believe otherwise.
Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro: Yeah I read the manga after I watched the show. A slower build than the anime, but it works for the format, if theyd done the same with the show then I don't think it wouldve done as well. Honestly? Cuter tbh but just as horny. You dont start really LEARNING about your character until like, chap 65 tho and no real "drama" happens until like 75. A good chunk of the chapters are like 8pgs so its a breeze to get through. I love these slow burn idiots of the century. 9.5/10 because you can DEFINITELY tell the mangaka does hentai too.
Yugen's All-Ghouls Homeroom: one-shot by the mangaka for Food Wars, it's no wonder there's this constant perviness from the MC, a guy who can see and exorcise spirits. Takes place at an all girl's finishing school with KICK ASS monsters tbh, kinda bummed its not longer. The MC? Blatant monsterfucker who is also a CONFRIMED monsterfucker???? Idk i vibe with that single emotion. Everything else is hit or miss. 7/10 for monsters and cool concept, lost points for the MC very pointedly being okay with admitting he'd wait for the teenagers to be adults tho. Creepy af. Could live without that.
Hell's Paradise: I finished the entire 127chps in 3 days and I was really enthusiastic about it 90% of the time thinking about how deep it was and then I actually thought about it and I ended up being very neutral about the whole thing tbh. The art is fantastic tho, but DEFINITELY deserving of the M rating. Tits. Tits everywhere. But not tits to be ecchi over, no, monster hermit tits on beautiful women-ish figures. Now generally I give that a pass but a huge theme in the story is that men and women are "no better than one or the other" but like, lady tits are what you see 99% of the time. Men tits are few and far between. I call bullshit on most of the "deep" themes is what I'm saying, so it's like the mangaka was trying for those deep thoughts but missed the margin a little too far for my preference. That being said, the MC is a married man who loves his wife which automatically makes him my favorite character so like... idk so many good things, so many misses, but overall really spectacular themes and imagery. Unique but classic all at once. It's getting an anime and I have NO IDEA how much censorship they're gonna be doing but they're going to be doing SO MUCH. Oh yeah, and one guy is a plant/human hybrid who fucks a 1000 year old plant-hermit which makes him a canon monster fucker. And one canon non-binary character who I, a nonbinary, actually like. So like... gosh I've got mixed feelings. 8.5/10.
Choujin X: From Sui Ishida, mangaka to the mega hit Tokyo Ghoul comes this brand new manga!... Of one chapter, lol. Not really binge-y because it's just the one chapter out right now but I'm already keeping my eye on it. The grasp on anatomy in the art is PHENOMENAL and you can see Ishida flexing his art skill which is great. Can't give a true rating but I'm giving it a tentative 9/10 because I'm excited to see more.
Shag&Scoob: technically not a manga, its an ongoing webcomic I binged an subscribed to in one day and I just think it deserves more attention. Starts off funny with "what if Scooby Doo had a gun" and has been led to "what if all cartoons are aliens that survive and receive their powers by the humans that love them in an epic war with Martians." On god, its good. I finished the current series in a couple hours so it's a breezy read, highly recommend it. 9/10.
To Your Eternity: Yeah I watched the anime and then finished all current 143 chapters in like 3 days. GOD IM WEAK. I don't buy physical manga unless I know I want to remember the story forever and I'm already budgeting for the current books out. Yeah, this is a good series. That being said, definitely not for the faint of heart or those who suffer under common triggers like suicide, molestation, death, etc. It's all framed as bad and necessary to the story don't get me wrong, but it's there and has lasting affects on the characters. Incredible story telling by the creator of A Silent Voice. Keep tissues nearby at all times. 12/10.

The Osomatsu-san English Dub: thoughts about the new voices
-        The voice I’m having the most difficulty adjusting to so far is Osomatsu.  Don’t get me wrong I love Billy Kametz, but I definitely hear him instead of Oso when he speaks.  Weirdly enough he sounds a little … bro-ish?  In some lines?  That might just be me though.  And it’s not a bad thing, just an observation.  I can’t complain too much, since acting-wise he’s got the dumb-but-charming-slacker down pat.
 -        Karamatsu, as lots of people have pointed out, is pretty consistently baritone.  There’s not as much of a ‘real voice’ leaking through like there was with Nakamura.  But in terms of capturing the character I think Ray Chase nails it, he’s legit hilarious.  Especially once he really gets comfortable with the role and starts playing around with inflection and delivery, he’s a riot.   Kara is still just as much of a painful peacock as ever and I am here for it.  
 -        Choromatsu was another adjustment, but Sean Chiplock does a fantastic job balancing the thirsty weeb with the exasperated straight-man.  And he does push the voice cracks when the opportunity calls for it! Comparing Chiplock’s performance to Kamiya’s is kind of unfair since I don’t think anybody could ever top the original, but make no mistake, Chiplock is no slouch and he comes pretty damn close to being on par by the second cour!
 -        Ichimatsu is pretty damn good from start to finish.  It takes Kyle McCarly a little bit to lean into the softer qualities of the original, but he makes up for it with great comedic delivery where it counts, and by the second cour he’s a dead-ringer for Fukuyama.  You’ve all seen the ‘Give me the good stuff Daddy’ clip by now, need I say more?  
 -        Jyushimatsu is a definite deviation from the original, but once you get used to the higher vocal register, I think Micheal Sinterniklaas nails the spirit of the character.  It takes him a little bit to find his footing in the early episodes, but once he gets comfortable he’s a perfect fit.  He’s still the raging ball of boundless chaotic energy that we all know and love, and you can tell that Sinterniklaas is having a lot of fun with it.  
 -        Todomatsu is a little softer than what I expected from Max Mittelman, but it does work in terms of capturing that faux-cuteness that defined the original. And when the scene calls for ham he can absolutely deliver.  I wasn’t worried about that though; he did play Saitama.  Again, I hate comparing Mittelman to Irino since the original is one of my favorite vocal performances of all time, but all things considered, Mittelman is doing a great job oscillating between casual callousness and faux-trendy-soft-boy.
 -        I was worried about Iyami’s transition to English, but Keith Silverstein is handles him really well!  He sounds a little more posh to make up for the lack of -zanzus, but he’s got the sketchy-conman aspect down pat, which is what’s important.  As for the ‘Sheeh’s … even if it’s not perfect, it’s a damn good attempt and he improves as the series goes on.  It’s a very Japanese gag, so I wouldn’t expect any English actor to nail it perfectly, not even Silverstein.  
 -        Chibita took some getting used to.  When I first heard the voice I could have sworn that it was Bonnie Gordon, but apparently it’s Alejandra Cazares?  Regardless, I think she’s got Chibita’s personality down perfectly, which is what counts.  Girl can swear and shout like a sailor and I would expect nothing less.  
 -        Totoko is pretty good.  Cassandra Lee Morris sounds even cuter than the original, but it does cost her a little bit in the sharpness department.  But the smugness delivers really well, so I’d give her a solid thumbs up.
 -        Hatabou is perfect.  Like legit, Cherami Leigh a dead-ringer for Saito both in pitch and delivery.  10/10
 -        Dekapan and Dayon are perfect too, much to my surprise!  I was nervous about these two much like I was about Iyami, but the two actors who played them nailed it.  I wish I could find their names.  (If you have them, let me know!)
 -        Matsuyo and Matsuzo are perfect too!  Mick Wingert as Matsuyo is a dead-ringer for the original to a scary degree.   Likewise, Matsuzo’s VA is very solid for the little screen time he got (another name I couldn’t find, unfortunately.)

07-Ghost - The World (Part. 2)
Episodes 11-20 of the 07-Ghost radio show. I’m really enjoying listening to this. It makes me want to investigate which other anime have radio shows. The only other one I know of is Zetsubou Sensei. Pretty funny that the lesser known shows would be popular enough to be on the radio. Links below for anyone who wants to listen (raw Japanese only). 
Episode 11
This episode kind of feels like the beginning of a new season because they got a new opening and ending theme. They’re nice to listen to but not something I would want to download or anything. They have a cheesy mid-2000s vibe to them (gee, I wonder why?) This episode was cute because they had Hakuren’s VA as a guest. It’s fun to imagine Teito, Hakuren, and Mikage all hanging out together since that never happened in the series. 
This time around they discussed “what would you do if X happened to your best friend” scenarios and read a lot of fan mail. As usual Mikage’s VA lost every game lol. I think Jun (Hakuren’s VA) said at one point that he thinks of Mitsuki (Teito’s VA) as an “ikemen” looool. I just googled her name and she does look really androgynous. 
Episode 12
More of the same, more teasing of Namikawa (one of the fanmails was just asking if he got bad grades in school lol). This time around the beginning conversation was about “who would make a good brother, sister, mom, etc. in the 07 Ghost universe?” It kinda bugs me how surface-level and basic their answers are. They never really mention side characters or manga-only characters so they really only have a tiny amount of people to shuffle through again and again. On the other hand, Namikawa never read the manga so...
They played two games: “which thing is smaller?” and what’s in “Pandora’s box?” Saiga flat out said she didn’t want to do the second game lol. She’s getting bored with the formula. I do think the show is stronger when they’re just chit-chatting or bouncing ideas off listener mail, but the games are easier to understand language-wise so it’s good to have a mix of the two. 
Episode 13 
This episode had Kuroyuri’s VA on as a guest which was a nice change of pace. They discussed grades again (you can tell a lot of the listeners are very young based on the listener mail) and played shiritori using dialogue from 07 Ghost. I feel like they’re getting pretty creative with the games they come up with. 
This episode and the previous one had a lot of ads at the end for 07 Ghost content (DVDs, drama CDs, manga, etc.) They mention the “upcoming live event” which I’m guessing is the same one that was released on DVD. Are live anime events still a common thing? I know the Tales of series has an annual festival so I guess they must be. -sigh- why can’t I live in Japan :( 
Episode 14
This episode was fun to listen to, Namikawa and Saiga crack each other up a lot and have great chemistry. I feel like I’m enjoying this radio show more than I enjoyed the entire series? Loool 
Anyway, in this episode they spent a long time talking about and giving each other nicknames (they settled on “Wada” for Namikawa and “Ouji” for Saiga). Namikawa got roasted by the listeners a bunch, as usual, and they had a “dad joke” competition. Two listeners wrote in about their worries, one was worried about his sore neck and the other’s husband was mad at her for spending too much on anime (lol). I guess this episode came out around the mid-point of the anime’s broadcast because they referenced the Frau dolls and the weird noises they make, which was funny. 
I think I need to listen to more Japanese podcasts cuz this is fun and great practice. If anyone has any reccs, please let me know! 
Episode 15
Sho Hayami (Ayanami’s VA) returns!! His voice is sooo dreeeammy. One of the listener mail’s mentioned his fan club and I totally get it lol. I would join if I could. Anyway, this episode was cute. They talked about their first crushes (Hayami’s was a boy!) and played a game where they had to read some exposition from 07 Ghost and pick out what was wrong about it. Honestly, I struggled to understand that part because fantasy world vocabulary is tricky. Namikawa lost as he always does and his punishment was that he had to talk like a baby for the rest of the episode. He did a really good job lol. 
They did a “last supper” segment again where they ate pudding (flan) with soy sauce, which apparently is supposed to taste like sea urchin...ew. 
Episode 16
This episode was decent, a little meandering lol. They had Hyuuga’s VA on as a guest and he seemed surprisingly shy compared to the character he plays. He was very quiet and didn’t contribute much to the conversation. I was a little nervous when he lost one of the games they played and had to speak “rabbit language” (basically adding “pyon” or “usa” to the end of every sentence) for the rest of the episode, but that actually was exactly what was needed to spice up his debut lol. His awkwardness plus the vocal tic was pretty hilarious. 
This episode took place after the live event because they had some fan mail about it. One girl went with her mom which is so cute (I can imagine dragging my parents to something like that lol). They discussed what it would like to be a twin and played a game where they had to read a bunch of tricky words (mostly katakana) really fast. It sounded really hard! I kinda wish I had the script so I could try for myself. I really like reading katakana 
Episode 17
This episode felt really short, the nico nico video is only 38 minutes long! Castor’s VA guest starred this time and was way more energetic than Hyuuga’s VA in the last episode. He was hamming it up a lot. They discussed sleeping positions and played a game where they got a list of 3 07 Ghost characters and had to figure out what they all had in common. I had fun playing along (although I didn’t do very well lol). Namikawa lost and had to use “zamasu” language? I’m not really sure what that is. 
At the end of the episode they read some listener mail and gave love confession advice lol. Almost made it a third of a way through the show! 
Episode 18
A nice, simple no-guest episode. This time around they discussed what pets would suit them and played family feud basically (and failed miserably). Saiga and Namikawa both got “punished” for failing the game and had to speak like the opposite gender. They both really struggled to do so lol. Masculine/feminine speech is so weird to me. I’m sure English has some, subtle version of this, but if someone told me to “talk like a guy” I wouldn’t know what to do. (Lower my voice? Say “bro” a lot?) It’s always interesting when other languages have a quirk that there’s no real English equivalent for.
This episode felt kind of lazy. They spent most of it just chit-chatting and didn’t seem like they wanted to do the regular corner. They ended up running out of time for the final fan letter reading. I’m not complaining really, it was just noticeably less professional than some other episodes. 
Episode 19
Not gonna lie, the Japanese was a little tricky for me in this one. Haruse’s VA made his show debut and I didn’t recognize his voice at all lol. Haruse barely talks in the show so I was like “???” They asked him what kind of character Haruse is and he was like “...nice?” Lol poor Haruse. Not much to say about him anime-wise. 
This definitely felt like a “we’re running out of ideas” episode. The game they played was really weird. Basically it was “what do you do when X natural disaster occurs?” with 07 ghost characters illustrating what to do vs. what not to do. Haruse’s VA lost and his punishment was to speak in broken Japanese (like annoying foreigner characters do in anime). It was really obnoxious lol. The episode ended with a “Last supper” segment but I had trouble following what they were eating :/ Almost to episode 20!
Episode 20
Another Hyuuga episode, although I felt like he didn’t talk as much this time. These episodes are really starting to blend together. This one was recorded in October so they discussed autumn and things they like/dislike about it. Practically every fan letter was about Namikawa (either bullying or praising him). I finally understand the “Wada” joke (namikaWA DAisuke), it took me a few episodes.
Unfortunately I didn’t really understand much of this episode, especially the game they played. It sounded like they had to pick a symbol to represent a character from 07 Ghost, but I’m not sure if that’s the gist of it. Namikawa lost as usual and his punishment was to speak like an old man. I thought he did a great job! Sometimes I forget I’m listening to voice actors instead of regular radio hosts. It makes sense that all of their punishments would be impressions related.

Glee - S1 E1 (Pilot)
Is it a smart idea to rewatch glee again? No.

Here goes!
Wow. The first frame of this entire show is literally of a woman who looks like she’s about 10 years above the natural lifespan of a Cheerio. Then again, I’m sure Sue’s not above holding back her best recruits for multiple years because Ohio high schools are apparently just Like That™
I also never notice this opening song was a remix of Keep Me Hangin On, wow. That’s actually kind of interesting foreshadowing of sorts, like, kind of smart. I’m glad I’m watching the part of Glee that was kind of smart.
This scene also doesn’t feature any of the Unholy Trinity as far as I can see. Are they a JV squad? Am I putting too much thought into this?

Say what you want about Rachel Berry being generally insufferable, but I really fucking feel it when she sings On My Own. The monologue kind of kills The Drama of it, but they really solidly established her character by layering them. She really is a gold star right now.

God, I love this stupid scene of Quinn, Santana, and a bunch of Cheerios cartoonishly typing hate comments on Rachel’s MySpace video and laughing like knock-off Disney villains. 
I like watching season 1 Artie because season 1 Artie was a good character. Mostly. And he KILLED Sit Down, You’re Rocking The Boat. Rachel wasn’t asking for a male lead who could keep up with her vocally, she was being straight up ableist and that’s a fact. I love Cory, but Kevin McHale was always a better singer.
Mercedes picking up and spinning Rachel for this little routine is something I never really appreciated before, it’s cute even though they don’t like each other yet!
I really don’t get why Rachel says they suck. Yeah, sure, she’s gunning for a solo, but the vocals were solid there. The choreo was just a little janky, possibly because it’s their first EVER rehearsal?

Red vs Blue Season 17 Review, Part One
On March 9th, 2019, Red vs Blue: Singularity premiered at last. After the monster cliffhanger of S16, to say that many of us had been anxious would be an understatement. Well, it’s several months later and the season has concluded it’s 12 episode run. So, was it good? Was it bad? Well… that’s a hard question to answer. But however we feel, we’re going to be going over it today in my Season 17 Review~!
This baby got a Hell of a lot longer than intended, so hopefully, it’s coherent. I tried to be firm, but honest. No matter what I think though, there is no arguing that these people put in a lot of work to make this season a reality. I never want that fact to be ignored. So thank you Jason, Miles, Josh, Austin, Greg, Joe, RT Animation, and everyone else for all the hard work. Couldn’t have been easy, but we appreciate it all the same~!
So with that said, for the final time, let us talk about Red vs Blue Season 17.
Visuals/Machinima
This season was unique in that not only was Halo 5 still being us, but they had to go back and use all the past renditions as well. It looked like they were going to use Halo 2 Anniversary for the paradox stuff, a familiar yet different design, but I guess someone decided it was better to just reuse the older games. Which I think was probably the right choice. Halo 2 Anniversary I think would have helped add this feeling of everything being off, but at the same time seeing the previous versions helps connect to the moments more. It adds more emotional investment since we’re seeing something that we recognize being fucked with. It meant more work for the Machinima team, and I hope that they’re all still alive and had a nice vacation after it was all over cause yikes. Their efforts are greatly appreciated~
The machinima was overall very good. Josh Ornelas has been with the show for six years as a machinimator and directed at least a few episodes of S14. So he was more than fit to be a co-director for this season. Austin Clark is newer and IDK when he started (my guess is around 14 or 15), but I think he’s shown that he’s perfectly capable both as a machinimator and as a director. I never noticed any issues with the machinima that threw me off… but as usual, it’s hard to critique what are essentially video game movements/defaults. Very least whenever the characters were emotional or something, I got the feeling from how the scene was framed. Even though you can’t see the faces, the machinimators know how to frame it to make you feel the intended emotion. Episode 9 with Carolina and Wash’s talk I think demonstrated that. Yeah, the VA-ing helped, but you can see the emotion, even though there’s no emotion to display. And while Austin handled the even-numbered episodes and Josh the odd ones, everything felt like they were on the same page, which is essential when co-directing. They both did an excellent job directing.
Animation was sadly sparse compared to the last season. Wasn’t bad though. There were some good bits, like the opening credits and Wash directing his gun at Genkins in Episode 3. Oh. and Genkins getting stabbed with his own golf club was pretty gruesome, especially with his writhing around, but seeing the original Halo animated was nice. We only got one fight scene, but it was Carolina vs Carolina and it was badass. Not as creative as the Donut vs O’Malley fight, but still really good and impactful. Loved it!. The sets and effects were all very good. Just look at the opening. The effects used for The Everwhen looked really cool and other-worldly. The Labyrinth looked pretty creepy, as it should be considering its true nature. And of course, all the previous Halo’s still looked good… maybe a little dated with Halo: CE but still as good as it did in the remaster.
Overall, visually speaking, the season was really good. The machinima looked great and was directed competently. I felt engaged, and that’s what’s important. Definitely one of the season high points.
Voice Acting/Music
We’re mainly going to be discussing Dan Godwin, Shannon McCormick, Jen Brown, Ricco Fajardo, and Lee Eddy. Everyone else in the main cast was pretty much at the expected level of quality. There’s sadly not much to talk about specifically, which we’ll go more into during the character section. But Joel, Matt, Gus, Geoff, Becca, and Jason Saldana all did well and gave the quality that I expect from them, just nothing that stands out really. I’ll say this, Geoff and Becca’s performance in the finale was very strong and emotional and I loved it. Matt he both got to do Wyoming again and had to do Doc and O’Malley at the same time, which he nailed perfectly. And hearing Burnie as Church again was really nice… but never let him do English Lopez again. Ever.
Let's talk about villains first. Ricco Fajardo as Genkins is freakin’ fantastic. While we got glimpses of it last season, Genkins fun but truly shitty self is on full display this season. And Ricco is clearly having the time of his life recording it. He’s just always so cheerful and having fun, but it feels so messed up and sadistic due to the circumstances. But he owns it. Sometimes having a villain who is just shitty can be fun, especially if you have a competent actor doing it. And Ricco absolutely nailed it. We also have Lee Eddy, who voiced 479er, make her return to RvB as Chrovos. She too is clearly having a fun time. She goes full-on Large Ham with Chrovos’ theatrics and basting but also portrays her getting fed up very well. It’s the Gwen in her showing, haha. But yeah, these are two fun villain characters, and the performances very much reflected that. Loved it~
Next, we have our Freelancers, Shannon and Jen. They both got the emotions hard this season. Which considering how their plot ended last season, is no surprise. It’s no shock that these two did very well, but… man… Jen had to express a lot of guilt, but also a lot of tears and pain. Which she did very well. Carolina feels terrible and has to accept that her efforts were in vain, and Jen conveyed that very well. The second that Carolina breaks down in Episode 9… God, I just wanted to hug her. Then there’s Episode 11 where Carolina is confronting her past self, and it truly does feel like two different characters, even though it’s the same actress. It was a very strong performance this season, arguably her best one yet.
Then we have Shannon. Oh golly, Shannon. How long has he been doing Wash now? Over a decade, right? He knows this character in and out… and he perfectly shows that this season. Wash has a lot to get through this season. His anger at Carolina, him having to accept what happened, accept what has to happen, it’s a lot. Shannon nails it. From going back and forth between normal and crazy in Episode 3 to any time his anger at Carolina showed, to his talk with Carolina in Episode 5, his acceptance of his fate and prepping for it in Episode 9, and his horror to seeing everyone die in 11. And he still got lighter moments, like his interactions with Donut, which were super enjoyable. Shannon just knocked it out of the park this season, and I loved it.
But of course, the one I have to give the biggest kudos to is Dan Godwin. While he has performed Donut since the very beginning… well, he only got to do so much since Donut only got to do so much. He never did a bad job, or he was on par with everyone else, but he simply wasn’t really allowed to go beyond ‘optimistic, innuendo-spouting moron’. That is, until now. Dan got to do so much this season. He got a full range to do with Donut that he really never got, or only got so briefly. He got to be emotional, he got to be angry, he got to be frustrated, he got to be utterly done with absolutely everything. And he conveyed all of that very well. Heck, I think the pitch even lowered a little bit compared to before, or it felt less squeaky as the season went on. It feels more like an in-between of Blood Gulch Donut and pre-Paradox Donut, which I think works. Overall, Dan got to show how much experience with the character he really has after so many years of not getting to, and he was by far the best performer due to it.
Everyone in the cast did great. Even for brief returns like Miles and Gray with the Mercs, Arryn Zech with Dr. Grey, and the Freelancers all did a great job. Jason Weight as Grif’s coach was also simultaneously hilarious and scary. He clearly put his all into it, anyways. As for the music… what? Ae we surprised that it was good? David Levy and Trocadero again delivered a solid soundtrack. The fact that we have to wait for both this soundtrack and still for the S16 soundtrack continues to upset me. But at least it means a lot of quality tracks whenever they do come out. Solid job overall from the music team.
Characters
So one of the problems with these reviews is I have to remember to look at things two ways: as a fan and as a critic. We had a lot of really good character stuff with some characters… and not so much with others. And looking at it as a fan and then as a critic causes two widely different perspectives regarding this section. Normally I’d rather get the negative out of the way, but to explain the negative I have to talk about the positives first. Hopefully, I don’t come off as too harsh, but I want to be honest in this review as well. So.. here we go.
Okay, happy first. The two main focuses of this season are Donut and Wash. Let's do Wash, and in turn Carolina, first. Wash… well, got put to the side last season for the most part. His plot was mainly focused on his brain damage that he didn’t know about and ended with his blow up at Carolina. Which we all know what that leads to. Here, Wash has to deal with the fallout of it. He gets to stabilize and be back to pre-brain damage and is determined to save the others… but his anger at Carolina is lingering. His arc this season is about him forgiving Carolina, helping Donut, and accepting his own fate. I think, overall, Wash had a very good arc. And this is coming from someone who is not that big of a Wash fan.
Wash’s anger at Carolina is understandable, but he realizes that she did it out of concern for him and never meant to hurt him, and especially after talking to her in Episode 5 and how even when paradox’d she still trusts him, he forgives her. Carolina, in turn, has to deal with the immense guilt of her actions… again. Yeah, the fact that we got another ‘Carolina is guilty’ story after Freelancer, S13, and S15, it’s feeling a little repetitive. But her emotions regarding it were very well written. You do really feel the remorse and understand why she did what she did. It makes it even worse when in Episode 9, Wash accepts what has to happen and Carolina has to accept it. It was one of the toughest scenes in the season but was such a beautiful, poignant moment for both. They still have problems, like Wash fears of losing everyone and Carolina has past issues lingering still over Freelancer and her family. But it’s safe to say that they’ve both become closer and stronger.
The biggest character of this season is, of course, Donut. This was a long time coming. Up until the end of the last season, Donut was probably the most underutilized character in the show aside from maybe Lopez and Doc. He went from a dumb but semi-competent rookie to a flamboyant, one-note joke character. Like after Blood Gulch I can't think of anything significant that he contributed. Recollection more or less wrote him out/killed him off, Chorus did nothing with him, and S15 also did nothing with him and even forgot him in certain scenes. S16 began to fix that, having Donut get annoyed at being ignored, nearly betray everyone, and then get into one of the shows best fight scenes by far. So we were building up for something for this season, and sure enough, it came and it came hard… was that at innuendo? Dang it Donut, you’ve influenced me too much!
This was developed for Donut that was loooong overdue. He further got frustrated with being ignored and belittled by everyone around him. He recognized his innuendo problem and tried to actively improve it. He showed some of that competence he had in Blood Gulch, piecing things together and actively taking charge since he understood things the most. When he told everyone off in Episode 7, it felt so satisfying because of how long he’s been treated like a nuisance when he was at worst a little annoying and TMI. He was willing, tried his best, and it really felt like he was finally allowed to be more than just a joke. It really made me like and appreciate Donut a LOT more than I did before. Like he used to not just be my least favorite Red, but my least favorite of the BGC. Now? He’s right below Grif and Simmons on the Overall Favorites List. Yeah, that’s a LOT of places.
Donut was great and I wouldn't change him getting him this development… but this development did come at a cost. That being development for everyone else. The other Reds and the Blues were shafted and shafted pretty badly. The first half of the season, they are trapped with no memory and go about how they would in that time period. Which okay, it’s necessary for the plot so we can overlook that one. They get restored in Episode 6… and they are STILL badly shafted. They are all joke characters, which does NOT work when we’re this deep in the plot. I mean we get some moments, like Tucker reliving his failure on Crash Site  Bravo and recognizing his fault over the past few seasons, Sarge has his scenario in Episode 11 that I thought was very insightful, but those are small moments. Sadly, Donut got too much attention. Even with Wash, him realizing how he was the Donut of Freelancer was more or less contributing to making Donut look good, as did Tucker’s moment. I like those scenes and I love Donut… but not everything had to be about him. He’s the main character, not the only one.
Let's do the Blues first. As I said, there were more or less just there and had no real major character development or effect on the plot. But that being said, they were given some legit good stuff. Tucker got it the best as he re-lived Crash Site Bravo and finally realized true leadership was. It was about stepping up when no one else would and when things were at their bleakest, not being the cool, macho guy like he kept acting like it was. Which after these past two seasons, was nice to see. I was one of the people who were perfectly fine with how Tucker was written the past two seasons because I could see why he had regressed. But I do know that a lot of people didn’t like it, and this feels like a good way to bring it all around. Have Tucker relive his worst moment, this time having to let it go through, and therefore truly remember what caused him to step up on Chorus: because he had to. It’s short, but it does its job and this along with his Labyrinth vision I think has really helped Tucker’s character immensely.
Caboose is overall pretty minor but had some good scenes like beating the shit out of Genkins in Episode 6 and figuring out how time travel worked before the others. It helps show that he’s an idiot, but he’s a smart idiot (if that makes any sense) and was a step up from his limited screentime last season. He also had my favorite line in the entire season (“These graphics look horrible!”). Sister was overall minor, but I’ll go into her later. You’ll see why when I get there. Doc was overall also minor and how the Hell he was in the Everwhen I’ll never know, but I do like him in the finale and finally getting a grip on O’Malley. He more or less is a combo of the two now and seems much more capable due to it, so that’s good. So yeah, while it may not have been a lot, the Blues and Doc were at least given something, which is better than nothing at all.
The Reds though… so you know how these past two seasons started giving them more development? You would think that since Donut is the main character, that would continue, right? Haha… nope! They went right back to ‘the comedy relief team who do absolutely nothing!’! Which after the past two seasons started to do more with them… yeah, this felt like a slap in the face. Sarge annoyed me this season. Mainly in Episode 7 where he was a hypocritical asshole about Donut’s betrayal, ignoring how he not that long ago betrayed everyone and was still feeling guilty about it. He was also the one primarily being a jerk to Donut, which did not do him any favors. I know it’s Sarge and he’s an asshole, so it’s not 100% unexpected… but I felt like it was pushed too much just to contribute to the ‘Donut is so unappreciated!’ arc. His speech in Episode 6 was hilarious though and I did like his Labyrinth vision showing that he can't handle both civilian or army life. It was surprisingly insightful in a way that I’m not used to with Sarge. So yeah, I feel his screentime was on par with Sister and Caboose at least.
Simmons… got nothing. Absolutely nothing. I mean the running gag where he kept seeing Donut shot was really funny, and it also meant he wasn't an asshole like Sarge. Heck, he seemed to be the only one willing to hear Donut out about saving them in Episode 7. And he did more or less point out how they could launch the gold club through the portal to stop Genkind from reigniting the paradox, which was minor but nice to see for him. Him not being a kissass anymore is also sticking, which seeing him back when he was pettier in Episode 2 did make me appreciate where he is now. The way that he was legit concerned for Donut during the ‘Wash shoots Donut’ gag also helps make it look like he at least cared about him in contrast to Sarge’s jackassery. But he was otherwise just there. Very least, it also means he was the only Red that I didn’t get frustrated about since his character remained consistent… until the finale with the utter bullshit that was his nightmare. Seriously guys, what the fuck?!
But at least with Sarge and Simmons, they weren’t exactly in the spotlight last season, so I don’t feel like I got cheated with them. I cannot say the same about Grif, however. Which we will cover that, as well as the Story section, in Part Two.

Ollie and Molly Post Mortem
Now that the last episode has aired, I wanted to share some thoughts from the production. Under the cut because it gets long. Contains spoilers. 
The concept:
Interestingly, as a concept, Ollie and Molly as an idea began as a voice acting vehicle for myself. Olivia and Molly were the same characters (in that they were half-sisters who didn't know about each other), but Molly was quite a bit younger, a little girl. Initially they were going to be comedic shorts featuring just the two girls in a generally more comedic fashion. I was going to voice both of them.
Then, I thought, "well, maybe I'll throw in Olivia's fiance in after a couple of episodes" because there were some male voice actors I wanted to work with. I figured at least one of them would be on board.
I was a little bit stuck, though, on what exactly the story would be, so I just started writing clips of dialogue. I think the overall tone started shifting once I wrote what would be the first draft of the opening monologue. It came out just so much darker than I intended and a new story started developing.
Then I just went from there.
On the developing the characters:
Olivia-Olivia didn’t change much from her initial inception. She was always the sort of straight man to Molly, this girl who suddenly had a sister and didn’t know what to do about it. I think her arc was the one I planned out the least, and it just sort of unfolded.
Molly-I feel, looking back, that Molly got the shallowest overall arc. Conceptually, she began as a little girl as I said above, and it was in later iterations of the concept that I made her a teenager. She was a vampire from the very start, but there were other things that I wish I had talked about more with her. Something that only got hinted at was that she’s on the ace spectrum. I wish I had made a more overt nod to it if only to make the sudden engagement to Carter just a little more troublesome. I just couldn’t quite get there without it feeling ham-fisted, though. It’s something I’ll need to work on for future endeavors.
Ferris and David-Ferris came into my head fully formed. A slightly sassy half-elf that was fed up with the noble life felt like the perfect character to help act as a bridge between Olivia and Molly if they ever needed it. David came about in relation to him. I knew, from the start, that Ferris and David were going to know each other. It was meant to show the smallness of the non human and preternatural communites. At the time, David was a blank slate, no gender, no personality. That’s when I flipped a coin, and it was like “okay, he’s a dude, what now?” Then I had to figure out how they knew each other and the most effortless way to explain that relationship. Once I had the thought that they could just be a couple and cut out all the middle, I realized I had the perfect foil to Olivia and Nate’s relationship. Then it was easy from there to make this nice, very gentle vampire mentor.
Nate-I didn’t know, at the beginning, how active Nate would be in the progression of the final conflict. I knew I wanted him to be guilty by complacency, but I didn’t really start figuring out the scope of his  involvement until I was writing his and Olivia’s scene in episode 3. In the first draft I realized that the best way to really amp up the conflict for Olivia was to make him an active conspirator in the engagement annulment. Knowing that, I went back and did passes earlier in the script to congenial him up a bit (but to also make him have little flashes of insecurity), so that the final turn would be that much worse.
Carter-Carter wasn’t initially going to actually show up, just be mentioned. As I was working out the last half of the series, though, I realized the opportunity to create more sympathy for some of the people caught up in this nonsense. Where Olivia was Nate’s counter, Carter could act as Molly’s, showing another corner in this rhombus of madness. He definitely could have used more development, but I think the flashes that we got were adequate.
Chuck Brunkus-CHUUUUCKKK! Chuck was specifically written for his actor. I needed a catalyst character that was just going to show up in episode 4 to give an introduction to the vampire super-structure. Dan was doing music for me but is also a VA, so I just knew I had the perfect guy to give me a nice, salt-of-the-earth performance. He was named by Liam (Ferris). I was looking at very gruff names like Hank, Chuck, and Bill. Liam just sort of came up with Brunkus while I was talking to him about what to name the character. Then Chuck Brunkus stuck. I love Chuck. He’s coming back in the future.
Lord Beryl and Serena-I conceived Beryl and Serena as the sort of anti-Father and Mother for better or worse. Serena didn’t keep Molly  despite being the next best thing to her real mom, Beryl was the fatherly authority figure she actually respected. They were also meant to be more functional characters in that they’d provide information on Molly’s past and the bureaucracy of vampirism. I think they filled their roles well.
On writing:
Episode 1
This was the episode that had the most dramatic rewrites from draft to final episode. Obviously, this was because I was trying to find the pace of the story over all and get in character development. It was also my first shot at world building. I had to establish that it was semi-fantasy without exposition dumping, always tricky. I wrote the opening monologue, the dinner scene, and Ferris introduction in that order, and filled in the gaps between them. The sequence with the students talking behind Molly’s back is probably still my favorite in the whole series. 
Episode 2
The “hey, guess what, there are vampires” episode. At first, I had no idea how I was going to play this. I really wanted to establish that we were dealing in a “vampires are normal” kind of thing, that in this world there weren’t some scary boogeyman, just humans with a weird genetic condition. I think David being as mild-mannered as he is, Olivia’s almost immediate acceptance, and Molly’s sort of vague apathy about the whole thing really helped with that. This was also a good time to set up Father and Mother as belligerent figures for later. 
Episode 3
This was a tricky episode to write, and it ended up being the shortest for it. I didn’t really want to linger too long in Molly’s old life, but I really felt like I had to show the mental toll she was going through. This needed to be the turning point episode, where she started getting some closure to be able to sort of narratively move on into the last half of the series.
Episode 4
I was already in the process of casting when I actually started writing this one out (not just outlines), and that made it all the more fun to write. I sort of already knew who my Ferris and David would be and ended up writing to their voices more than in previous episodes (which I would later go back and adjust). It remains my favorite episode for how it came together and everyone’s performances. I really wanted to work in more Ferris and David growth, and having there be a vampire-based conflict allowed me to setup what would end up being the central conflict of episode 6. It’s one of the few times in writing where I was actually trying to do some foreshadowing. Most of the time stuff just kind of….happened.
Episode 5 & 6
Ah the finales. I probably rewrote these a dozen times trying to first, suss out the appropriate conflict and, second, find the right balance between ridiculous and serious. I wanted the audience to feel the pressure that the girls were feeling, but also be able to step back, see the whole picture, and realize how not that big a deal the problem really was in the grand scheme of things. I wanted the girls to be able to do that, too, to start opening up their worlds. The mention of Olivia traveling at the end was my way of showing how much bigger she had made her own world.
On Casting:
This was my first time casting for voice and let me tell ya...it was pretty fun, but also exhausting. I really have to thank the existence of the Let’s Dub Project for putting me in touch with so many great actors who I was able to pass the casting call along to. Funnily enough, Dijit, who played Father, didn’t even realize that I was  the Ashe that was in LDP. He just auditioned for the heck of it. That made me feel really great, actually, that someone who I find really talented saw enough potential in my project to audition without knowing who I was.
Overall, I was astounded by the amount of talent that showed interest, which made casting the best hardest decision. I was so honored and humbled by all of it. I could probably go on for a bagillion pages about the actors.
What I’ve learned:
I didn’t have all the episodes written before opening casting. So when I had to add characters all of a sudden, I found myself having to reach out to a few extra actors. I was lucky in that they were available, but I know that’s not something I can always rely on.
Doing the full version of episode 1 with art was definitely a lesson in knowing when to scale back. When it was taking me months just to get it ready, I knew I was in trouble. Cutting out the art was a good move.
Good SFX, Foley, and audio mixing are underrated skills. If I hadn’t cut my teeth on comic dubs and smaller audio skits before heading into O and M, I would have been in a world of hurt. I honed that skill so much over the course of Ollie and Molly I can really feel the difference.
For future projects, I’m going to actually direct. I had initially planned to do directing via skype for this project, but the more people I brought on cast, the more I realized how hard that was going to be to organize. I went with a leap of faith, put direction in the script, then just....sent them off hoping for the best. I was lucky everything came back amazing, but I can’t trust that to happen again.
The month to month schedule saved me. There was slight variation when the episodes came out. There were some 4 week gaps and some 6 week gaps, but making sure an episode came out each month made this whole thing possible. It made me finish and not get distracted. And now! It’s DONE!

Mp100 dub: episode 5 commentary
Hoo boy, this gets a little long!
Mob: *gently raises arm* “Let’s be frie–” *Teru IMMEDIATELY backs off* Ahaha omg, Teru’s overkill reaction is priceless. XD Have to rewatch it several times! Just, the contrast in how soft-spoken and gentle Mob is, compared to Teru’s extreme (almost unwarranted) caution. 
Dimple and Mob commenting on Teru’s erratic behavior is downright hilarious, because it’s like they’re lowkey dissing him at the same time. Dimple: “Are you up for doing that?” Mob: “Nah, makes me nauseous.” (Pffft! XD) Dimple: “C’mon, look how he’s standing!” *while Teru does his weird pointed knee stance* I swear, these lines have to be intentional! The coincidence is just too damn funny. X’D
Mob recalling Reigen’s teachings about not letting the conceit from having special powers get to someone’s head–   Teru: “I’m special, better than others! And THE ENTIRE WORLD REVOLVES AROUND ME!”   WELP;;;;; Yeah…even Dimple knows Teru needs to chill.
“Dimple, no!!” D8 Omg, seeing him try to protect Mob (using the excuse that Mob has the potential to become a god), with the perspective from the latest manga chapters is just….WHOA ouchie ;.;  Especially seeing him get ‘erased’ trying is just…it hits too close to home, man!! Uwaaah! D’8
Teru’s enraged screeching is on point! Props to the va! 
Mob: “Knives are sharp and dangerous; you shouldn’t point them at–” Oh mannnnn the reoccurring visual metaphors~ Especially right after Reigen’s explanation about them too. Ohoho I love it!
Teru: *hair gets chopped off* “How dare you. You think I look like some middle-aged pencil pusher now, don’t you?” OMFGGGG X’D Especially delivered with that hyper-detailed rendered shot of his expression, TWICE! “But you thought it!” I can’t!
Ok, whoa he introduces himself as ‘Terookie’ like that, ummm;; Considering his tirade on how he looks ridiculous now, adding how he sounds on top of that just feels like an extra punch to that gag. Everything’s so EXTRA it’s ridiculous. The way he hams it up placing himself at the center of the universe too. Mob: “You’re kinda going overboard here.” I DARESAY! 8D The soft-spoken precious son knows what’s up.
Mob: “You have no confidence in yourself. Same way that I don’t. If you take away your abilities, there’ll be nothing left; you’ll be empty. …You just don’t want to admit that you’re nothing without your psychic powers.” I repeat: MY SON KNOWS WHAT’S UP! Even saying that Dimple is a better person than Teru right now, gosh!
Boiii….Teru’s intense freak-out going physical. It’s actually pretty hard to watch. :’( Accusing Mob of destroying his world just by simply existing like that (really, Mob hasn’t done anything to him, except the hair accident). Damn. Mob’s desperation not to use his powers on him, recalling the trauma of accidentally hurting his brother in the past, and resorting to defending himself with weak physical punches instead. D’8 Uuuuu!!! Also Teru’s: “How many times are you gonna reject me?!” GOSH. “Wait, don’t leave me behind!” Wow. This feels a bit gay…yeah.
*???% mode finally showcased* Teru: “His vessel is able to handle this much!?” (BONES I see exactly where his power is being sucked from XD) Something ‘that must never be touched, something incomparable, entity unknown~’ Boiiii, that menacing presence! 8D “Oh, I guess, I’m just an average person after all.” Such ultimate humbling moment for this guy…
Narrator: “His powerlessness born from overwhelming contradictions, and the feeling he would never be able to conquer himself: Sadness. What had just occurred was Mob’s meager attempt at resisting his inner self.” :’(((((( So many feels for my son.
“He’s been beaten, stripped and shamed!!” WELP! The other delinquents gtfo of there! XD And Teru manages to smile in all his reformed (naked) glory. He’s taking it pretty well, all things considered. 
Oh man, Mob searching for Dimple for hours in the rain, and catching a cold after coming up empty-handed. DDD’8 Uuuuu!!!! (manga feels are still too raw for this ahhhhh)
Osnap, Ritsu wanting to open up to Mob about it, but lying about the details in their past. “Back then… That wasn’t him – that wasn’t my brother.” Hoooo, he sees the news broadcast on what happened with Teru…and the plot’s intrigue sickens…! 8D Good stuff!
Very strong and intense episode, with lots of brilliant unintended (or maybe purposefully timed? Hey it’s ONE) humor sprinkled throughout. We get to see what’s up with Ritsu next time, looking forward to it! 8D
