"Welcome to the Theatre": Diary of a Broadway Baby
The Welkin
May 25, 2024 | Off-Broadway | Atlantic Theatre Company | Evening | Play | Original | 2H 30M
Holy fuck, babes. This show. I was not prepared for a single thing that happened. Basic plot: it's 1759 and twelve country women are called in to determine if a convicted murderess is pregnant or not. If she's lying, she gets hanged. If she is pregnant, she's spared. It felt very akin to Twelve Angry Men at the start, which is already great, but then it just fucking explodes into a riveting story that feels both contemporary and of its time. It's been hundreds of years and we're still fighting the same old prejudices. Thirteen women all on stage basically the whole show. My kind of paradise. And then for every one to be wholly unique and developed? Incredible. It's still in early previews, and it can only go up from here.
What a joy to see Sandra Oh thrive on stage. None of this nonsense where a screen actor doesn't know how to pivot to stage acting. She gets it. She's so good. Ann Harada is a delight and this character is made for her. All of the women are so stunning. What a time to be alive to see theatre. So much happens in one single room. I need to see it again. I cannot afford full-priced tickets, but I will find a way in, so help me.
There's a fantastic rhythm segment early on where twelve women are doing housework and put together, the clanking, thumping sounds become a repeating mantra that dwindles as one by one they all leave. I need to be front and center for this. I need it so badly.
Verdict: You Can Pry This Show Out of My Cold Dead Hands

I had the opportunity to hear a talk with Lucy Kirkwood at my university last week! She talked about her new projects, The Witches (musical adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel) and The Human Body (play about the beginnings of the NHS). I even got to ask a question!

I'm a dedicated man to my wife and I pulled for this sword only because it matches her, It isn't even useful but Nilou only deserves the prettiest things.
Her stats look kinda crazy though.
I've got saved up almost 400+ pulls for her, I'm going to artificially inflate the statistics of her banner just by pulling like a madman.
