Going straight to a blow-off valve will sound much cooler, and a blow-off valve can also flow a massive amount of air. If you plan on running high boost levels then a blow-off valve is a good choice. For moderate boost levels, a 50/50 bypass valve is a good choice. This will allow 50% of the unused boost to recirculate back into the intake and 50% of the unused boost will vent to atmosphere.
Front Mount Intercooler
A lot of cars use hood scoops that literally go to nothing. The scoop is there just for the looks. Subaru, however, took a different approach to this by using the scoop to push air through the turbocharger’s intercooler. This is great because it frees up space at the front of the vehicle which theoretically will improve the efficiency of the radiator.
The problem is that putting an intercooler on top of the engine makes it very susceptible to heat soak, after all, hot air rises. When you heat soak your intercooler, charge air temperatures become really hot which can result in detonation and/or power loss. The easiest fix for this problem is to put the intercooler down in the bumper where most turbocharged cars have it.
Changing the location of the intercooler might sound like a daunting task, but don’t worry it’s really not that hard. Most front mount intercooler kits will include everything needed to relocate the intercooler to a much better location. A front mount intercooler will drastically reduce charge temperatures which will improve power and greatly reduce the chance of detonation.
