THE PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY

Persistence of Memory is the best-known work of Salvador Dali. In the painting there is a weird landscape, with droopy watches, like something out of a dream. Dali believed that dreams revealed our unconscious thoughts, and can be in some ways more ‘real’ than reality. In the painting there is a lifeless tree and a sleeping figure suggesting death and dreams. Watches and sand represent time, the painting highlights Dali’s childhood memories of cliffs and ants. The golden cliffs are based on a place in Spain, near Dali’s childhood home. The distorted version is of Dali’s own profile. The dead tree, ants, and flies are signs of decay. As a child, Dali had a fear of ants. All the watches show different times.
