A Brief Discussion On Nicki Minaj:

Nicki Minaj is a super talented female rapper. Since she came into the industry and started releasing music she has managed to make quite the mark. She has broke records, set records and won countless awards for the art that she has created. Her ability to write her own stuff has made her standout. Not only has she released music that has made an impact of her own, she has also provided features on countless tracks that have made cultural impacts. Impacts to such degree that fans have those verses memorised and will regurgitate them with no hesitation. She has created for herself a hardcore following and those fans are known as the ‘Barbz’. What is so unique about the bars she rights is the references she makes, the research and how thought out her writing is. However she’s also let all the ‘beef’ she’s had with others overshadow her work at times.

She so far has released four studio albums, and her biggest hits have been those that are more pop infused like ‘Super Bass’ & ‘Starships’. ‘The Pinkprint’ has to be her strongest body of work to date. However she hasn’t managed to make an album that has gone to make a strong impact as a whole. I feel she still has so much more to give as an artist and it seems like she is teasing her fifth studio album. She had announced around the time of her marriage and pregnancy that she was retiring, however that seems to have been more of a break as she is back at it. I hope that with her fifth album she thinks about it more as a whole and really curates it with a concept behind it.

One thing we see Nicki do a lot is feature on so many artists single releases or albums. She’ll even jump on a remix. This is all in attempt to break and hold the record for most Hot 100 entries by an artist. Which is truly a cheap tactic do so and devalues her as a featured artist. She struggled to release a strong enough single that would take the top spot on the Hot 100, that the only way she was able to do that was jump on a track destined for the highest peak. That being Doja Cat’s track ‘Say So’ for which she featured on the remix. The remix itself was rather lacklustre and the original version remained the go to. However it allowed Nicki to obtain her first number one single. Then she gained her second Billboard Hot 100 number one when she featured on 6ix9ine’s song ‘Trollz’. I wonder if she’ll ever get a number one with a single where she is the lead. However it doesn’t seem likely at this point.

She has however had a bunch of standout feature moments that have made quite the mark. Showcasing her potential to add to a track and elevate it. However in the pursuit for commercial success and chart records she has allowed her craft to lose appreciation to an extent. As you don’t see much talk of her recent features to the same extent as some of her previous like ‘Monster’. Yes she gets paid quite a hefty amount for every feature she does, however she makes more than enough money for her to do it just for the sake of money. Recently Jessie J gave an interview and touched upon the track ‘Bang Bang’ since it was the songs anniversary. In which she mentioned that Nicki had heard the track and wanted to jump on it. Nicki immediately jumped on twitter to tweet out what really went down. Not taking into account that when an artist is contacted and paid for a feature that isn’t how it is communicated to the other artist. Labels will usually say just as Jessie J revealed in the interview ‘Said artist heard the track and wanted to feature on it’ as a way to get their artist excited. Now Nicki had every right to share her truth, however it was just the way in which it was done that was rather mean spirited.

The moment in itself provided enough for us to see that Nicki will jump on a track simple for the sake of it and not due to her wanting to collaborate with an artist on most occasions. So when you break a record because you jumped on every possible track you could then is that a well deserved feat? I don’t think it is. It only is when your releases were strong enough to draw people to it that then in turn led your tracks to debut on the charts. Nicki Minaj does have some hits that you could resist and not tire of due to their timeless nature. Then there are those tracks that when they were initially released they were greatly enjoyable and drew you in, however they lost their appeal with time. On top of that she also has those tracks that lyrically intrigue you, however overall have no replay value. If you are able to get the balance right that potentially can be a track that can end up being a standout moment, but as it lacks in all the other aspects of what allows a song to leave a long lasting impression (besides lyrics) it just doesn’t do much else.

There is the odd occasion like for Ariana Grande where it is apparent that she does it out of love and want of collaborating with her. They've become quite the combo and fans always lust for them two on a track together.

Overall I feel like as the general public Nicki is and will be remembered for her major mainstream hits, the records she broke as a female rapper and the beef that she was a part of. It’ll only be her hardcore fans that revisit more than just the hits and admire her for the journey they’ve gone on with her. Sometimes when you put yourself forward in a certain mannerism it can overshadow your work, which is something you have to be aware of. It is completely her right to clear things up and let her side of the story be known. However she just needs to do it in a way that doesn’t come across in a negative way.

In all her projects she talks about her personal life (family/relationships). With her last album that was released in 2014, her opening song is literally about her family.
