Nimona is the best kids film I’ve ever watched. Hands down. I can’t even begin to explain everything that made me love it but I was SOBBING by the end, like harder than I’ve ever cried to any other film, even Wolfwalkers which also made me basically break down.

(sees another fandom that I can ask you about and cheers) Orphan Black! Thoughts? I don't know Dr Who but Tatiana is one of my favorite actors period.

Anon you are so sweet! I'm always happy to chat about fandoms and characters and whatnot, and I will never not appreciate the majesty of Tatiana's acting. That is one of the greatest parts of the show hands down.

Orphan Black, to me, is a show that had incredible potential, but didn't really live up to the excitement it created. (Loooong post ahead.)

The thing is, Orphan Black builds a chilling mystery and background, the world it gradually creates as it goes for about the first two seasons, got be very invested and made me wonder a lot about where it was going to go and what the answers were. The setup is brilliant, right from the start with that iconic cold open of Beth's suicide. The unknown is what really helped this show get as thrilling as it was, because the actual answers behind the unknown were kind of hit and miss, and it seemed like far too often, the show just wasn't interested in telling it's story. Hijinks where the clones impersonate each other in slice of life events? That's fun at first and it really works well as they're still getting to know each other. But after a while, it gets tedious, and it seems like the show would rather fuck around and have dance parties (seriously, that scene was such a #BigLippedAlligatorMoment) than focus on the story and the threat that the sisters are facing. Virtually all of Allison's plotlines are like this, they feel like they belong in a different show, and for some reason the writers insisted on giving her one of these storylines like, every season. After Allison passively murders her own friend out of suspecting that she's spying on her, I just don't feel like an arc about her running for some PTA office position even matters. It doesn't feel right.

Speaking of that, here's another example: Donnie. Why did the end of the first season suggest that he was this secret mastermind working for Leekie? The whole idea just deflates in Season 2 and doesn't really go anywhere. He just goes back to being the bumbling sweetheart he was before. Why even have him be the spy? Maybe it should have been Ainsley. Do you want to know the exact moment that I think Orphan Black went wrong? Like, the specific scene? When Leekie was killed off. The character who had thus far been the Big Bad, gets taken out in the stupidest possible way, a literal accident on Donnie's part, and it's even played for laughs. After that point, the show really struggled to regain it's footing, though I don't think it completely went off the rails until about Season 4, and it was still generally hit or miss. Like, some stuff was really good. The introduction of the Castor clones, the development of Rachel's character (I'll get to her, trust me.) and the reveal of Kendall Malone. But it seemed like so much else was just forgotten or otherwise not resolved. Whatever happened to Cal? Sure, the show wanted to focus on the sisters...but Kira deserves to know her father if she wants to. That's just one example. It's a crying shame because this show is sometimes incredible. The metaphor that I always use for situations like this, is a card game. The show has all the right cards in its hand, they're just not being played.

The two strongest characters, at least to me, were Rachel and Helena. One of these characters was superbly written and went through a devastating arc. The other was Helena. We need to talk about her. In Season 1, she really cemented herself as a memorable presence with her trademark accent, her scars, her whole damn personality (again, hats off to Tatiana) and of course, that iconic screechy theme music that accompanied her. Which at first made us jump, but eventually made us cheer. I adored Helena, and I loved the development of her relationship with Sarah. Who went from shooting her in Season 1, to being deadset on rescuring her in Season 3, being furious with Siobhan for betraying her. (This is unrelated but Siobhan has the same " twist villain fakeout" at the end of Season 1 that Donnie does, and it's quite frustrating.) And yet, I swear, the writers just didn't know what to do with Helena half the time. They put her on a bus for long stretches, including one point where she just up and leaves Allison's house in Season 4, for no given reason. And the characters just kind of...don't care. The same thing happens when she gets arrested. No one cares to try and find Helena, even though she's unstable and often a danger to those around her. Even though she's by herself with no real ability to function in society. Even though she's pregnant. There is no excuse for this, and no Sarah, that "I'm sorry, I avoided you" scene in Season 5 is not going to cut it. It's such an afterthought.

I'm being rather critical, but I hope you can tell that this is from a point of passion. I genuinely enjoyed this show and getting to watch it. Just that sometimes it didn't feel like the show cared that I was watching. However, this was not true whenever Rachel was onscreen. Look, I'm a Merula Snyde stan, so you can probably already guess how I feel about Rachel. Despite her crimes, despite her constant slipping back the dark side, I felt so bad for Rachel at the end of it all. That scene with Kira really sums it up. "Who hurt you?" "All of them." And no scene is more intense than when she stabs out the eye cam. Like, I'm sorry, I pitied Rachel pretty much from Season 2 on. Her parents were horrible to her, and I'm supposed to think Ethan is the good guy here? He kills himself in front of his own daughter, telling her that she doesn't deserve him. And then Sarah shoots a pencil through her eye, causing brain damage and requiring a long recovery. I'm not saying that Sarah was wrong to do what she did, just that if I were in her shoes, I'd still feel a degree of guilt for Rachel's condition. In the end, I'm devastated that she was barred from Clone Club, when she made the right decision at the point it mattered. But there's just too much history there, and Sarah won't ever forgive her. (Though again, I do feel as though there's blame to share.) Rachel is my favorite character and I never expected her to be. But she's just so complex. Side note: "Enjoy your oophorectomy" is so damn quotable. I don't know why but I love that line.

So, Rachel's my favorite. Who's my least favorite? It might surprise you. It's Delphine. I'm sorry, but I just...I couldn't get on board with C*phine. Not after Season 3. I was waiting for the point that the show would push to finally redeem Delphine for her turncoat role, for all of the hell that she put Cosima through. By Season 5 though? I realized that as far as the writers were concerned? She already was redeemed. Even though she did nothing to earn it, except be presumed dead by Cosima. The way she treats Cosima in Season 3 is actually disgusting. Her reasoning for breaking up with Cosima is circular. She has to love "all the clones" in order to be with Cosima, and the way to do that is to take over Rachel's job, which means they can't date anymore? I'm not the only one who thought that didn't make sense, right? Oh and let's talk about how she stalks Cosima's date, breaks into her house, and threatens her life. Red. Flags. Cosima even says the line, "If you're not going to be with me, just let me go." I'm sorry, that should not be something she has to beg for. Delphine's behavior made me want her to stay far, far away from Cosima. Who is, incidentally, a sweetie and I absolutely adore her. I legit have trouble remembering that Tatiana's playing her because she just looks and acts so different. That said, even though I immensely disliked Delphine, I am so very glad that they made one of the clones gay. Just like I'm glad that they made one of them trans. (Though...Tony wasn't handled especially well.)

In general, I do think the earlier seasons were stronger. The Brightborn arc, while interesting, didn't really contribute much to the overarching narrative. We got the backstory on Beth's suicide and finally learned the truth about her, I suppose. Still, even though Beth is one of my favorite of the clones, and I never expected her to be either...I feel like the actual reason given for why she took her own life was rather illogical. She apparently did it because the investigation was putting the clones in danger of another Helsinki. Okay, but just because Evie Cho says you should off yourself, doesn't mean you have to. You could just, like...stop investigating. And if you die under mysterious circumstances without explaining anything to the sisters, they're not going to be put off from the investigation. They're going to look into this even more, because they don't know why they're not supposed to. The reveal that she and Art fell in love toward the end adds an extra gut punch, but it also doesn't make sense because wouldn't Art have referenced it during the period that he thought Sarah was Beth? On the other hand, Season 4 also introduced MK. And I have such a soft spot for her. I adore that sheep-masked sweetie. Everyone always asks "Which clone would you date" (because fandoms can think of nothing else I guess) and I never see anyone give any love to MK. Her death absolutely tore me apart. I am glad Siobhan avenged her even if she went down at the same time. Side note, her last word being the affectionate "Chickens..." Broke me.

Season 5 was a strange beast. In general, it seemed like we were finally getting some answers to the questions that were hanging over us. Exploring the deep mythos. But then they kind of turned it around and made it just be a Wizard of Oz style fraud twist. Westmoreland isn't really inhumanly old, he's a charlatan. I don't know why that was necessary in a science fictional show. I've seen the interviews and I get what they were going for, it just feels like it would have been cooler and far creepier if he was actually that old. The puppet master pulling the strings the whole time. We also finally get some answers for Kira's superhuman healing abilities (though we never learn how she's telepathically connected to the clones) and I'm loving it, but the trouble is, it's inconsistent. Ethan "Why is this guy so popular, he's an asshole" Duncan told Rachel specifically that Sarah being able to have children was a fluke, that the clones were "barren by design." I don't know, the whole concept of Revival and of the "magical island" was really foreboding and tied in with the earlier references to The Island of Doctor Moreau. Especially that song about "Revival's Children" just...the shudders, man. But just having it be a regular old scam is...a letdown. I know it may be more realistic, but I don't always need realism in my scifi. The finale is interesting, in that it's mostly an epilogue. I'm glad the clones (sans Rachel) got to live happily ever after, but there are two gut punches right at the end that are total nitpicks but they bother me. Helena naming her kids after Art and Donnie? And writing a memoir that she names "Orphan Black?" Those two tropes can go die in a hole. They can enjoy an oophorectomy, because I'm so sick of them.

The potential of Orphan Black was practically infinite. The results of Orphan Black fell frustratingly short.

alright folks, I’m back for more of those results from the anniversary poll; once again, I’ll be counting them as properly as I can because IS sure as hell can’t, and in the process, I will also judge whether the fans have spoken good choices

this time, we’ll be counting and criticizing the top 15 dancing duos! (disclaimer: I don’t dance. I still will attempt to comment on everyone else’s dancing)

tumblr won’t let me simply put two images next to each other in a text post, and I can’t be fucked to put them together in such a way that doesn’t make them un-transparent, so I’ll be putting them together with a simple color background; it’s a spot uglier and I will probably fail to spot some wonky pixels, but c’est la vie

anyways, I don’t like it, but like Byleth before, this is a natural afk pick; they’re some of a very small subset of characters in the series that we actually see dancing with each other, in a proper cutscene. a cutscene that, in fact, basically exists to tell us that they look good dancing, so one’s not wrong to vote for them here, I suppose. there are, in fact, a lot of people in this world who are fantastic performers and also would throw their spouses in a fire if they figured it’d make them feel good about themselves again

#2: OLIVIA & INIGO (2474 votes, including Laslow)

this is actually sweet, though, mother-son dancing duo and all. one thing I do have to mention, though, is that you’d have to hope that our hypothetical dance-off was announced plenty of time in advance, there’s so much that could bring a performance between them crashing and burning if they don’t hash it all out for themselves first

#3: EDELGARD & DIMTIRI (1871 votes across all appearances, possibly with uncounted change)

they sure do look fantastic, dancing with other people with their backs completely to each other,

might as well stuff this strangely popular nothing-of-a-choice with a little additional note: these paired votes are going to be especially harrowing on the split vote front, because any combination of two characters who both have split votes means they can be combined with each other in 4 different ways. like, most people probably won’t combine, say, someone’s PoR self with someone else’s RD self, but properly unsplitting votes in this is going to be a lot more of a challenge. and that’s to say nothing of byleth; there is a whopping 16 different ways to combine Byleth and any one Three Houses character

ETA: I. completely forgot about the thing where edelgard tried to teach dimitri to dance when they were young. okay, that kind of tracks. but also like, whomst the fuck got the idea that whatever they were doing there was building up to elegance

I’m getting the lingering feeling that this fandom is a lot better at pointing out good dancers than good teachers-

this one’s another amazing pick; sure, not one you have to think a lot about, since they’re oft-shipped and one of them is an actual dancer -- but the beauty of it is that even the ostensible weak link still has much offer, between his flawless elegance and a love of dancing that we at the very least knows is in his lineage

let’s just hope eliwood would still prefer to keep the “special dances” private though-

#5: BYLETH & CLAUDE (1163 votes across all appearances, possibly with uncounted change)

speaking of the ballroom cutscene again, man, Claude sure has left an impression on us all back there-

still, we don’t actually see the dance, and it’s probably better that we don’t -- I wouldn’t bet that Byleth is any more expressive with their moves than they are with their face. there’s really not very much of a reason to vote for this other than wanting to insert yourself into a situation where one dances with Claude. and I mean, mood, but let’s focus, please-

this is just a copout, though. this is like if I asked you about the best food in your town and you just told me that technically Gordon Ramsey was born there. ooo, hot take alert, two unrelated professional performers can probably put on a decent performance together!

at least their theme colors together make the trans flag, so I’ll give all 996 of you that much-

#7: ALM & CELICA (990 votes)

was there like an actual thing where they dance, or were people picking this just because they’re good-looking and married? because like, in the absence of evidence, I cannot and will not assume that Alm is a remotely passable dancer.

in fact, here’s the drill: for this section, I can’t actually blame people if they’re just hornyvoting -- being hot is kind of a point-plus for this -- but I can and will blame them if they’re voting for their ships with no regard as to whether they’d look good dancing. so, accusations of hornyvoting shall make way -- to accusations of shipvoting! I believe that’s also going to happen on the other paired category, even if that one is a lot less about the chemistry (presumably)

#8: NILS & NINIAN (884 votes)

this kind of a copout again, but it’s also a family dance again, BUT most importantly one of these two is not actually a dancer. like, sure, he plays the flute, but this isn’t a flute-and-dance duo poll, it’s a dance poll! although I mean, it does mean he must have a good notion of rhythm, and from the sprites we can definitely tell he’s got a spring in his step when he plays, and Ninian can teach him too, so... maybe? oh well, it’d be cute to see them try

#9: SIGURD & DEIRDRE (790 votes)

eh, I’m gonna call shipvoting on this one too. like, sure, they’re both hot and they’re in love with each other, but even if you leave aside the likelihood that Deirdre was raised too shelthered to have danced like ever, any dancing they’d know of would be totally incompatible, considering their entirely distinct backgrounds.

I suppose I will lend credence to the idea that Sigurd’s at least experienced as far as dancers go; it’s not like he was studying back at that academy,

#10: BYLETH & EDELGARD (735 votes across all appearances, possibly with uncounted change)

since most of the votes on this are for post-timeskip edelgard, this appears to be unrelated to the ballroom scene, for once

that said, I can’t think of anything to this other than regular shipvoting -- and not even shipvoting of much quality, because besides the above-mentioned on whether byleth can dance, I have a nagging feeling that the kind of dancing Edelgard would genuinely be interested in would be strictly for fun, without any sort of elegance or other things that an outside participant would enjoy watching

#11: TSUBASA & CAEDA & KIRIA & THARJA (687 votes)

don’t let the fact that I found a transparent tsubasa but not a transparent kiria distract you from the absolute trainwreck that resulted from the naming scheme used in FEH for TMS#FE characters crashing into the notation I’m using for the duos here- ahem, well, please be distracted from both of those things, anyway

assuming this is just between the two mirage users and we’re not talking about the most awkward foursome in history, well... I once again have not played TMS#FE, so uh, they sure are both pop idols and I think people ship them, I guess?

I mean... there’s a lot that can be said about their individual qualities and their dynamics, but I have absolutely no idea how any of it would translate into a ballroom. and if we’re any inclined to believe that skill with words and skill with bodily expression tend to be opposite skillsets, then theyyyy are both screwed.

I really hate this way the media lumps all the ‘rest’ of the Dem candidates as interchangeable. At least give everybody a chance to tell us who they are until the debates. All should have an equal chance because there are some good candidates there. Each one is unique and has at least one good idea. Would they all make a good President? Probably not but let’s hear them out!! People wonder why we never have enough choices and then they try to thin the field right away.  Andrew Yang wasn’t even included in some of the advertising for the debates and he is polling 8th. ** Seth Macfarlane and Bill Maher suggest that we do away with the audience. The first night of debate went well. I went in loving Inslee and went out the same way. He didn’t get much chance to talk what with the moderators asking Elizabeth Warren questions about 4 to the others 1. When Jay did get to speak about climate change and calling out CEO’s,  I thought he was dynamic. He really puts his money where his mouth is. I wish more people would research him. He had the best answer of what this country’s greatest threat is when he answered ,”Donald Trump.” Colbert made fun of Inslee for interrupting Warren about the rights of women. I must say that as a woman, that never even occurred to me because I was looking at her as a candidate. He has also been raked over for trying to interject with that finger in the air. Hmm.. so polite. DeBlasio got in a great line about not blaming immigrants for their problems but blaming the corporations, otherwise he seemed like a bully. Warren and Booker were competent. Klobachar, Gabbard and Ryan should call it quits. I like O’Rourke but he just seems too sweet. I loved his close because he referenced current events like the kids in cages and student protests which didn’t seem like running for student council Pres. I was impressed with John Delaney who I hadn’t known much about.  But Julian Castro won the night. He still wouldn’t be my first choice but he did everything right. He was truly Presidential and seemed to resonate with everybody. He was forceful, down to earth and seemed to know what he was talking about.

Night 2 of the debates was a bit more lively. Hickenlooper will probably impress a few conservatives with his insistence that the Dems shouldn’t identify so much with socialism. Gillibrand seemed like tonight’s bully and it is time for her to go along with Bennet, Swalwell  and Williamson. Now, Marianne got a lot of shit but I agree with her on some basics. Preventative medicine and love being the answer is not stupid. These are things we don’t put enough stock in so why laugh it off? She is right about the chemicals and climate and why we are so sick in this world. She is right about state sponsored crimes and child abuse at the border. I thought Gillibrand repeated herself too much but she is right about putting too much money into private prisons. Buttigieg had a great point about the ‘free college for all’ thing by looking at the reality of those who don’t want college, a decent minimum wage and the rich paying for their own schooling.  He is also quite perceptive about republicans using religion while separating families which gives them no right to use God’s name. He was a bit sweaty but poised and measured all the way through. I am a big Andrew Yang fan and his money to all every month is something I have thought a solid idea for years but he is not Presidential at this point. He should be in the cabinet because he is an idea person but he sort of nervously choked on his first question about his signature piece. I loved that he didn’t wear a tie and his closing statement was awesome. Bernie gave us no surprises but the red, white and blue reflected in his glasses was fascinating. I did love his line about a hemisphere problem that we have and called out the Yemen crisis.  Like the night before, Biden seemed to get more time than the lesser knowns. He started out smooth and easy and ended serious and defensive because of the jabs he received. Kamala Harris stole the night with some of those. She jumped on Williamson’s mention of reparations to explain to Biden why his recent rhetoric of segregationists was so painful. This is why I love debates, it can change everything. I can’t really imagine anyone else taking on Trump at this point. She had some great lines like calming the boys down about no food fights but putting food on the table. Her close was a bit halting but she fired up the crowd as if she was already President.

The after shows zeroed in on the flaws which will unfortunately define some of them.  The way we loop ‘Bookers look’ or ‘Williamson’s love not fear for political purposes’ can belittle the progress we can make. I am right in there watching it but it gets old. Trevor Noah said that many try but it was the Right time for Harris to play the race card. Race is already playing a part as some birtherism is erupting eluding to her Indian mother and Jamaican father.  Don Jr. got the wheels in motion by retweeting some garbage about Harris not being an “American black.”She raised about 2 mil after the debates.

Doctor Who Series 11 Review Part 5/10: The Tsuranga Conundrum

Air date: 4 November 2018

Be honest here - who thought this episode was going to be something Japanese-themed from the title? Surely I wasn’t the only one.

To say the least, a third of this episode was weird, a third of this episode was mature and a third of the episode felt like a children’s TV show. That’s my spoiler-free thought for this week.

We have now reached the halfway mark for this series, so I’ll be giving my mid-series thoughts at the end.

Once again, spoilers after the break.

Episode Background

The Doctor and her friends are searching for something on Seffilun 27 (though she believes that it could have been on Seffilun 59) when they discover a sonic mine. Failing to place the mine in a temporal lock, the Doctor and her friends are hit by the blast and are taken to the medical ship Tsuranga, where they regain consciousness after four days. Disobeying advice from chief medic Astos, they begin looking for an exit, meeting Keeban neuropilot Eve Cicero and Gifftan Yoss Inkl. The Doctor learns that Tsuranga is actually an automated ship on its way to Resus One when an asteroid seemingly crashes into it. From that point on, strange things begin happening and the Doctor must find a way to keep everyone alive until they get to Resus One.

Male pregnancy - an SJW thing or overreaction?

The first SJW red flag I found in this episode was Yoss, who was being transported to Resus One in order to give birth. The reason I say this is because I’ve seen comments from people who are outraged at things that seemingly defy what nature intended. I, for one, could honestly care less about this and let people birth or adopt children if they decide to do so. After thinking about this, I may have found a way to downgrade this red flag by utilising references from the episode and in nature.

It is stated in the episode that both male and female Gifftans can be pregnant (gender equality right here, ladies and gentlemen), with the catch being that males can only give birth to males and females can only give birth to females. This makes me want to know more how the entire process works, but I digress. The point here is that Yoss is depicted as a humanoid alien with a different biology to that of humans on Earth.

In nature, female seahorses deposit their eggs into the pouches of male seahorses, who incubate them for 9 to 45 days. The term “male pregnancy” only applies to seahorses, giving them a unique status in that regard. There’s no such thing as transgender seahorses either, by the way.

In humans, however, the only way that trans people can get pregnant is if they were trans men - that is, they were born female and are transitioning to male - and they briefly stopped taking testosterone treatments. The nature-defying thing that some people (dare I say, transphobes) take from this is that men can seemingly get pregnant when in reality, nothing has really changed - the bottom line is that women can still get pregnant, it’s just that some choose to identify as men. There are no cases of pregnancies in trans women as of yet, though I pray for the sanity of this world when it happens (no offence intended).

So really, the SJW red flag in this episode can be negated if you think about seahorses (and maybe humanoid aliens). I feel kind of bad for arguing away the “SJW agenda” in the new series since people who honestly believe that said agenda is affecting mainstream media and entertainment are less likely to take my advice on these things. I’ll come back to this later.

Back to Ryan and Graham (character development)

The focus for character development this week goes back to Ryan, followed by Graham. As such, I could probably repeat my tokusatsu comparison from Episode 1 - Ryan symbolises the main Riders of recent Kamen Rider series in that his parents aren’t shown because they’re either missing or dead.

Though Yoss seemed excited at some aspects of his pregnancy, he worries that he is not ready to be a father, which is why he intends to give his child away once he is born. Ryan is reminded of his father upon hearing this and so, he confides about their relationship to Yaz. We also learn that Ryan’s mother died of a heart attack and that he was 13 when he found her body. He also notes that her death had an impact on his father, theorising that he was avoiding Ryan because he reminded him of his mother.

Later on, Yoss chooses Ryan and Graham to be his doulas when he is about to give birth. Graham mentions that he has watched every episode of Call the Midwife, but when they learn that they need to cut Yoss’ pregnancy sac open in a process similar to a Caesaran section, Graham reveals that he “always looked away at the squeamish bits”. The interaction between Ryan and Graham in this scene is amusing. Ryan encourages Yoss to at least be there for his child and be a better father than his father was, even if not perfect. Taking his encouragement to heart, Yoss decides to raise the baby himself, naming him Avocado. Graham attempts to fistbump Ryan again (like in Episode 3), but he gets rejected. Anyway, how do you do, fellow kids?

A kids’ show villain mixed with an adult plot in a “family show”

Let’s talk about the monster in this episode, the Pting. Having him be a CGI monster really shows how we live in a society. So, the Pting are tiny non-canivorous monsters that consume inorganic material to feed off its energy. They are impossible to contain or confine, they are unkillable, can live without oxygen and their skin is toxic to the touch.

At the same time, the Tsuranga is monitored from Resus One. The ship’s systems pick up signals of the Pting and send them back, leading them to send a response request to it, asking if there is a creature on board or not. The Doctor can’t take control of the ship or change its route because it can be detonated in event of a hijack. If they confirm that something is wrong, then everyone on board would have to evacuate before the ship is detonated, which they can’t do because the escape pods have been jettisoned. If they deny, then they have a total of three dismissals before they detonate the ship anyway as a precaution.

The Doctor and Eve deduce that the Pting is heading for the ship’s anti-matter drive, so Yaz and Ronan are tasked with keeping it away from the engine room. The Doctor later realises that the Pting intends to feed off the energy from the ship’s systems, so she denies Resus One’s response request for the third time and extracts the bomb from the engine room. She then attempts the lure the Pting to the bomb by placing it in airlock and speeding up the detonation. Indeed, the Pting finds its way to the airlock and eats the bomb, which detonates inside him before the Doctor jettisons it out into space.

Meanwhile, Eve offers to pilot the ship to Resus One, with the Doctor also offering to create a false positive cover signal so that they won’t detonate the ship. Though Eve was admitted with Corden Fever, the Doctor learns that she actually has Pilot’s Heart, something which she uses adrenaline blockers to manage in order to maintain her image and status in her galaxy. Her brother, Durkas, knows about this and continues to help his sister pilot the ship. When Eve succumbs to her disease, however, she gives control to him and he manages to pilot the ship safely to Resus One.

Is it me, or does this episode feel like a plot from a children’s TV show, only with more drama added? The Pting seemed to make this episode a bit juvenile, in my opinion.

Empowering confidence

Mabli was on her second tour of duty during the events of this episode. At the start, we hear her doubting herself on her skills, with Astos being the one of the only people who believed in her. The Doctor takes it upon herself to give her the confidence to believe in herself.

When the Doctor hears Mabli’s pessimistic comment, she compares the present problem to administering medicine, telling her to “imagine the solution and work to make it a reality”. The first time I watched this episode, I was too dense to realise this, but after seeing it a few more times, I finally recognised that there is a tokusatsu connection that can be made with that line and that is basically the underlying premise of Ressha Sentai ToQger, namely... (watch the video in the link to find out)

Other general thoughts

The Doctor doesn’t talk about her aversion to guns when stasers are mentioned. Presumably, this is because she (and everyone else) knows that the Pting can’t be killed. From what I can deduce, the Doctor is against killing and the use of guns for such a purpose. This will be going on the record in case she voices her opinion against guns at a monster that can’t be killed in the first place (or at least through conventional means).

There is no mention of what happens when matter meets anti-matter. If the anti-matter drive were to be damaged or destroyed, then wouldn’t the ship be destroyed instead of losing propulsion since the contents of the particle accelerator would leak out?

The Doctor’s sonic screwdriver gets eaten by the Pting and its energy sucked out. Isn’t the self-reboot feature a bit of a deus ex machina?

Grace is mentioned again in this episode. With all the mentions in the series so far, you’d think she’d come back by the end of this series. I mean, she is listed as a recurring actor on the TARDIS Data Core, so you never know.

Summary and verdict

This episode was weird and maybe a bit all over the place. The Pting is basically an antagonist from a kids’ show and its involvement leads the Doctor and the others on a rat chase. At least Yoss wasn’t written as a trans man, because that would have confused some viewers and added to the case of SJW pandering. Despite all this, it was a pretty decent episode, but even me saying that is being merciful towards the series.

Mid-Series Review

At the start of the prelude, I wrote down two questions that I wanted to answer. Since we’ve reached the halfway mark for this series, I thought I would answer them at each stage of Jodie Whittaker’s tenure, starting from now. Keep in mind that my answers are not definite until I do my review for her final episode.

To answer my first question, Jodie Whittaker’s performance just seems okay to me, so the bar is still about average. The Twelfth Doctor’s speech in The Zygon Inversion was what made him my favourite Doctor (followed by Eleven), but I’ve yet to see anything from the Thirteenth Doctor on that sort of scale.

As for the second question, yes, the SJW agenda is starting to affect how I think about this series. Like I said earlier, I’ve been managing to argue away the SJW red flags I’ve been finding in this series. I don’t know if this will end up in me being in denial or whatever, but I’ll see where this gets me.

This series has been okay for me so far. It should be noted that each episode so far has been written by Chris Chibnall (with Malorie Blackman co-writing Episode 3), so my criticisms so far reflect his work just as it reflects this series. We won’t be hearing from him again until the series finale as the next four episodes will be written by different writers. I’ll be looking forward to writing my final review and verdict for this series.
