Ohhhhh boy 😂

I need to preface this with the fact that this is so early in the process that I don't want to publicly commit to saying much about about the plot or even speculate on any sort of timeline as to when this might be finished.

But I will give a little snippet of something I'm working on. In this project, one of the things that's both fun and challenging is working from a largely new-to-me POV and more intimately illustrating some experiences that I've previously only written from an observer's perspective:

Harrow said that just meant her insight was getting better, that she was more aware of “areas where she needed support” which was the sugarcoated term for “weaknesses.” In hindsight, Gideon knew that initially she’d truly believed many of the checks and safeguards were unnecessary; now she knew that without the lists and alarms and extra time and another set of eyes she was prone to impulsively giving into distractions, to forgetting things, to missing things that were obvious to everyone else. And it fucking sucked.

Rec’tober: WIP but not forgotten

I’ve wanted to do a list like this for ages so why not do one now. The criteria I set for myself are: these are all Miraculous Ladybug fics, the fic has to have not been updated in the last year (so not in or after October 2018), and all must be individual WIPs not marked as complete (i.e. an incomplete ‘series’ of completed fics would not count).

These are absolutely not intended in any way as a “PLEASE FINISH THESE!11!!” but more an appreciation of some cool ideas and concepts that I really enjoyed and stuck with me over the years.

my thoughts below!! 💕 @salamandersocks and i have similar tastes!! i seem to favor:

opening lines that immediately immerse me in a specific emotion or situation (curiosity, anticipation, mystery), and stuff that hints at deeper complexity and "clues ahoy!!"

i also like slightly unsettling lines ("there is a strange boy on the beach who won’t stop staring at her") for mystical stories like the mermaid!au

i also like when really specific or short lines can drop a reader IMMEDIATELY into a specific context; conversely, i like when the first line gives the reader a feeling and the second line gives a location!

i also realize i like throwing characters into emotional / interpersonal conflict immediately lmao ("... the fuck is this?" / "what are you doing here?" / "on the contrary" / "man")

just want to quickly tell you that i really admire your dedication in completing your 'at the center' fiction, which is WOW, absolutely commendable!! ( and expanding other drabbles as well??? i'm blown away ).

everyone writes at their own pace, in their own time, with the best resources they have, according to whatever life stage(s) they are at 💕

~most readers generally express gratitude and understanding and patience! fandom culture (across fandoms) shifts and changes all the time, so while there are times in fandom (generally) in which the ✨entitled expectation✨ is for fic authors to "WRITE FAST, PUBLISH OFTEN," there are also times in which readers go out of their way to share beautifully encouraging messages like "even if you never update again, i am so grateful for what you have given us (so far)!" and "i will wait for this story to update for the rest of my life, and i will be happy with an update no matter how long it takes" and, often—both messages at the same time. 💖

a good skill to develop is the mental strength to withstand the not-so-nice messages while absorbing the positivity of the lovely ones! i don't post or respond to the really nasty anons i sometimes receive 👀 like the ones that accuse me of having "abandoned nearly all [my] fics"—i personally delete them immediately! anons like that do not deserve someone else's ✨energy✨. (for the first time—i think, ever?—i did post someone's confusing? rude? anon the other day [i.e., i am a hoarder who creates suffering by withholding fic updates?? i think??], but i attribute that choice to publicly post [my reaction gif to that anon] to my current Life Stage™ and my hard-earned self-confidence in the knowledge that I Can Do Hard Things. ✨ my development of that muscle has come from finishing other long-progress fanfics, and, to be honest, Real Life Milestones like going to grad school [twice] and Doing a Dissertation ✨). all in all, the motivation to keep updating is really, at its core, about having the will and the time and the mental energy and the passion to dedicate time to something that you really want to do, even through all the obstacles and nonsense, which takes mental (and emotional) strength! 💖 develop and fortify your mental fortitude! 💖💖💖💖 it's a lifelong process! ✨

and lastly, and most importantly, in my opinion... regardless of whether or not you think any potential readers might be out there (chances are there WILL BE, but that's not the point!!!), just keep writing... and write what you want, and write for yourself! whether you update in two days, or ten years, or twenty-two—do it, anyway!! 💖💖💖💖💖

“You think I’m too young?”

You are, she thinks, but doesn’t say so.

Sensing her concern, Jack props himself onto one elbow. He peers down at her, determined; Elsa watches the moonlight shine off the tips of his hair. His skin is practically luminescent, a distant cousin of a pearl. You’re not human, she thinks.

“Ask me,” he demands.

Elsa frowns. “Ask you what?”

“How old I am.”

She blinks. “All right. How old are you?”

“I am nearing three and one quarters.”

Elsa peers more carefully at the corners of his eyes, the grooves of his cheeks, mindful not to inch any closer. “...decades?”

He huffs. “Centuries. I have already reached my third.”

But Elsa wasn’t born yesterday either. “And when do mercreatures fully mature? When does your culture consider them leaders?”

Jack’s smug grin falters only slightly. “Our—longevity—allows for greater wisdom, but our—lifestyle—calls for younger warriors. I am already old enough for my first rite of passage on land.”

Elsa smiles, but the truth is that she is only half-humoring him. She already knows everything she needs to.

Jack flops back down, falling heavily into both of his forearms, shoulders sagging, the mattress crying out with the force of his fall. Elsa feels her long hair bounce over her shoulders as Jack settles in to stare at her.

“I’m too young,” he repeats, dejection in every luminescent pore.

Elsa smiles at him, sympathetically. “It’s not just that.”

Jack is more morose than ever. “It’s because I’m not human.”

Elsa’s smile turns the teensiest bit diplomatic.

She turns the question back to him, still utterly aware of the way his calves press into hers. “Do you have trouble sleeping?”

“We aren’t…. meant to sleep, the way you are,” Jack ponders the two inches of bedsheets stretched taut between them, beneath them. “It doesn’t feel… safe.”

Elsa considers that. It’s the deep thick of night, the kind that’s heavy like it’s own blanket across the room. The sky outside is rolling inky blackness, the kind the barely lends enough light to the dark of the room to cast shadows. But her eyes adjust quickly, used to interrupted nights.

At first, he thinks she’s fallen back asleep.

“Elsa?”

She swallows the ball of nerves that have knotted themselves in her throat. “I’m still awake,” she answers, as clearly as she can manage.

For a moment, there is no reply. There is only the sounds of the waves, and the silence of the room, and the stretch of waiting.

“Why won’t you touch me again?”
