What are your top-3 werewolf tropes (popular or obscure) or things you wish to see more in stories about/with werewolves?

ooo rly interesting question and surprisingly tough for me to answer.. i think 'tropes i hate' are probably easier to identify LOL but for some tropes i like hmmm:

i tend to enjoy werewolf transformations however it goes in that universe's werewolf lore, whether its painful and bone breaky and screamy or painful but feels good afterward or magical and painless or whatever, i think theyre all cool and they can all say a lot abt how u want ur werewolves to be viewed and what ur trying to say w them. i think my personal favorite is like, there is some level of pain but more than anything its a RELIEF to get to shift so its worth the pain. theres lots of things in life like that and growing up i could relate a lot to feeling like i was ready to burst out of my 'shell' as in body into who i REALLY was. on multiple levels lol

pack as being a better version of family was a huge one for me as a kid. i didnt have a good home life or childhood so i dreamed of finding out i was a werewolf and getting to run away and live in the woods as a wolf with a group of ppl that loved me, that was better than 'family' and meant more. tho it should also be stated this was more like a fantasy scenario for KID me; as an adult i love political dramas in fiction so complicated pack politics seem really fun to write now. i still wrote them to an extent when i was younger into my werewolf stories too but more than anything i had the dream of it being like a total freedom and actually getting to be loved as who you really were thing. i also like werewolf universes where they DONT rly have either packs of groups that function as packs, whatever works for the narrative and lore the best, but i loved the whole pack thing a lot growing up

i love werewolves being able to be used to represent so many things.. this isnt rly a trope in particular but i love the expressiveness and creativity and originality and fluidity their stories can have and i think its rly cool how many ppl can be compelled by them and attracted to the potential in these stories. theres so MUCH you can do w them that goes incredibly underutilized. if i wanted to always write a different way of looking at or approaching or relating real human experiences to werewolves, or even just slightly different ways the werewolves function (and you have so many different KINDS of werewolves; dif levels of animal and human mind combo as a four legged wolf, furry anthro werewolves, beast werewolves, etc) i would never run out of material or alternative ideas. thereis so much that can make a werewolf story a werewolf story and a werewolf a werewolf. theres so many personal reasons ive always loved and felt connected to them. this is partly getting into the 'what id love to see' thing, but just HUGE massive potential in writing abt stuff like disability for example that u just never see. werewolves r smth ive always rly deeply loved a lot and been fascinated with and i think it shows in how like Personal me talking abt werewolves tends to get lol. this wasnt rly a trope but im counting it

for more things i want more in werewolf stories.. lots of stuff specific and niche to me personally lol, but i want them to stop being so goddamn cisgender i think werewolf stories r one of those things where the way gender is handled is so unneccessarily bad SO much of the time for no reason i can see. i guess ppl want to be '''realistic''' to animals but gender does Not work like that for animals so theyre just being annoying for no reason. theres a lot of gender essentialism in a lot of werewolf stuff? which is incredibly grating. and obviusly shitty

anyway as a dif thing one of my biggest qualms w werewolf stories is that i rly dislike the incorrect 'alpha' dynamics + crazy aggression of the pack members against each other like werewolves r Biologically Evil thing that shows up a lot in werewolf stories by ppl who dont know anything abt wolves or wolf pack dynamics, or just dont care i guess. i dont care abt 'alpha/omega' shit at all i never write that kinda stuff. so i want more things that Dont use that. lol

id love to see more werewolves who Like being werewolves lol. being realistic abt like the pros and the cons here but there is NO reason why there r so few stories abt werewolves who actually like being werewolves or at least like some aspects of it. theres not enough furries writing these things i guess. oh i forgot to mention i like never think of lycanthropy as a 'curse' unless im writing it For A Reason. other characters viewing it as a curse while the werewolf doesnt, thats another story. i think its just boring and too like horror werewolf tropey to me. being able to turn into a wolf man is not a curse what the hell thats like the coolest power ever. i see ppl complaining abt how werewolves r 'too happy to just realize they have cool powers and start killing ppl they dont like for fun, i want to see them be SAD abt it' but i dont actualy see the 'enjoying murdering for fun' a lot in media so idk what theyre talking abt. i guess horror, maybe, where the werewolves r the villains? i see way more of them moping abt how hard it is to be cursed to be a furry. bite ME then if you hate it so much

im NOT defending either of the old owners but smth an anon said really rubbed me the wrong way. $300 adopts will not go as far as ppl act. It wont pay rent, and may only cover groceries for a short time. In america at least, the cost of healthcare is awful, and pair that with all other living expenses u have and its near impossible to make a living off adopts. saying “i wish u were poor so u understood hardship” is really fucked up cuz u dont know their situation or what theyve been thru. they built their own followings over the years so acting like their buyers were handed to them is also rlly weird. getting another job also aint easy in this market esp if u have a legit disability. mod pls try to atleast see where im coming from w this cuz im legit uncomfortable w how this is being talked abt. u dont have to like them to agree this is fucked up to say

these are fair assessments to make (also light reminder that the opinions of anons posted here may not directly align with mine)

however, my main point of contention especially regarding civ is not “wow they must be rolling in cash from all this furry money” because obviously i know art is an unstable career (off topic fun fact thats why i had to quit my dream of becoming a storyboarder and got a more stable career)

my point regarding civ is that: many people in their comments of the bulletin are acting like civ is the ONLY person struggling. for example theres a comment calling terra mods “ableist” for even daring to restrict the amount of adopts civ makes (because again, they had to restrict the amount of adopts STAFF makes. is it fair for civ and coy to get a disproportionate amount of opportunities to profit off of terraliens, when they have both left staff and do no work on maintenance, moderating, upkeep, and progression?), the “ableist” comment acts under the assumption that civ is the only disabled, struggling artist connected to terras. it doesnt take into account that many of the staff team are also autistic/disabled, cal in particular even said how much stress he is under at the moment because of irl and species responsibilities.

and then we add on to this the fact that, from a “struggling toyhouse artist” standpoint, civ is incredibly privileged, at least probably more privileged than some/most of the staff team. civ can usually if not always rely on the fact that their adopts or commissions will sell. they can rely on the fact that they have a large fanbase, and that their friends have large fanbases. they can rely on the fact that theyre viewed favorably in other cs spaces like chams and isopups. this isnt a matter of “theyre rolling in it,” its a matter of “hey why are we acting like civ isnt still at an advantage when it comes to selling art, why are we acting like terra mods are just punching down on them when many are in the same, if not worse circumstances?” civ has the ability to sell oneoffs very reliably, and no shade to the mods or anything, but there are members of staff who were pretty unknown before terras, do you think they could leave and still be able to rely on selling one-off adopts?

3) Ult Bias group and why you love them?

f(x) - they were my first group and will forever be my ults. I just love how unique they are both as a group and each member individually! Every member shines so much in their own way and can absolutely stand as artists in their own right (and have been proving so with their solo projects the past 2+ years), and when they come together they create things that are so cool and beautiful and unique 💜 Honest to god after I sat down and listened to their whole discography on Spotify for the first time, I listened to nothing but them 8+ hrs a day, 7 days a week for almost a month I was so in love (i'm not exaggerating you can ask my roommate aldbaj) (SM please let us have f(4) again I would literally cry). That being said I also consider ASTRO and SHINee to be ults, and could write whole paragraphs for them as well 💕 

(but y’all please support my girls, Victoria put out a Chinese single and should be following with an album, Amber’s halfway through releasing videos for her mixtape & Luna is releasing 2 digital singles this coming week! 4) Ult Bias and why you love them?

My kpop origin story revolves around me coming across the Electric Shock mv in 2013 and being both in love with and absolutely floored by Amber. A girl? In a girl idol group? With short hair?? Who presents in a masculine way?? I couldn’t believe it was something the companies would let happen and it was so. I don't even know. But I knew it was really meaningful and important to me. 3 years later I actually fully listen to the group (honestly thank got I needed new music to listen to at work) and I finally learned her name - Amber Liu. I'm someone who id's as nonbinary, and I've really struggled with my perceived femininity my whole life - its something I'm still working through. When I saw Amber, a person working in a very gender stereotype-heavy industry and culture, being able to present in the way she's comfortable and standing up for the rights of others to do the same, it just really touched me on a deep personal level. Even though I know she id's as cishet she still has done a lot for those of us that don't, and I'm sooo insanely proud of her for sticking to her guns and choosing to live her truth through all of the hell people have given and continue to give her for it. Not only has she stuck it to the haters by prospering, but she's taken her experiences and her talents and made them into absolutely beautiful works of art. 

She uses her music to express her feelings and talk about her struggles, and the fact that her work is so personal and has so much of her in it also means a lot to me (please listen to Borders, Need to Feel Needed, Beautiful, Heights, and this cover of One More Light NOTE: if self harm is a bad topic for you, maybe skip One More Light and the Borders mv (the song is fine and ultimately uplifting, and the mv does end happily). She has worked so. damn. hard. to pursue her dreams and passions, often having to rely on just herself and her friends to work when SM just straight up refuses to do their JOB as her MANAGEMENT COMPANY, and somehow she keeps doing it with that beautiful smile.

Aside from all the gooshy stuff, she’s just really goofy and fun (and attractive >>) AND she was born just 2 months before me so I feel there’s a connection (also my parents considered naming me Amber and she considered my name as a stage name??? #starcrossedlovers). Finally she has literally the cutest dog in the world please look at this picture and cry with me

1. Do you remember your dreams? If so, what’s the weirdest dream you can remember?

THIS IS LONG SO SKIP THIS IF YOU DONT LIKE READING. 

Yes, bc most of my dreams are very vivid. Ok so in my dream, my family and I were going to visit Willy Wonka’s factory. We parked in this extremely large parking lot, right in front of the factory (which looked like the one from the 2005 movie even though we were visiting the one from the 70′s and is in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by forests), but in order to get to the it we had to cross under a fence made out of electricity. So we all had to like shimmy underneath it, only when I went I got electrocuted, and I remember that I felt actual physical pain when this happened??? So we go inside and have a good time. Willy Wonka is there (the Gene Wilder one), theres a huge ass chocolate funnel, and a ball pit for some reason (???) and everyone was having fun. The weird thing though is the factory looked like a McDonalds play land place bc everything was made out of plastic and no one else was there for some reason. Anyway after what felt like a couple of hours, we decide to leave. The parking lot electricity fence is down, so we don’t have to risk electrocution, but, however, we find that there are around 20 race cars with angry oompa loompas in them, surrounding the parking lot. My family thinks this is weird and they all naruto run to the car (???) and leave without me?? So in this fucking blue minivan they ram into the race cars and escape, leaving me behind. I then am suddenly aware that Wonka’s factory is in the state of Kentucky, and realize that I have a long walk home to Maryland. I grab my phone out of my pocket, which is this, and try to call my parents, who do not pick up. After this, I literally have a movie montage of me walking home through suburban roads, only when it ends, I”m only on the road that leads to Wonka’s factory. Suddenly, a white van pulls up and the door opens to reveal 20 boy scouts who tell me i’m an honorary member and pull me in. They speed down the road, only for the oompa loompa race cars to appear out of the forest and chase us. We swerve off the road and die from being crushed under the van. The end.

2. Describe your favourite cinema. Is it nearby, or hard to get to? Why is it better than the others?

My favorite cinema is 15 minutes away and I only go to it bc its not that far. Idk how to spell it, its called like, Lietersburg or something. IT has a really big parking lot that I use to practice driving.

3. What was your favourite class in school? In terms of atmosphere, classmates, teacher, anything.

My favorite class in school was my junior year of high school english class with Ms. Mattu. I was friends with everyone in the class, which by the end of the year only had around 7 or 8 kids, and we spent class joking around and writing stupid messages and memes on the board, which, most of the time our teach would let us leave up there. Ms. Mattu was (and is) an excellent teacher who would push us to the limit in terms of our ability, and really helped me improve my writing skills A LOT which is great for someone who’s gonna major in something that might need a bunch of writing ability. We also had food days which were cool and watched some really good movies like, The Help or The Shawshank Redemption.

4. What’s one hair colour, piercing or tattoo you’d love to get someday but probably never will?

I would really love to get a septum piercing bc I think they look awesome, but knowing me I would probably get tired of it and want to take it out after a while. So sometimes I just wear a fake one lol. I’d also really love to get a tattoo of No-Face from Spirited Away, bc that movie is very close to my heart.

5. Describe one person who you’d love to be friends with, but only know as an acquaintance through work, school or other friends. What about them makes you want to know them better?

Oh jeez, there was this girl at school (who I absolutely will not name bc some of u went to school with me) who was like really cool??? Amazing fashion sense, super funny, and really cute. We had only talked a couple times, but I would literally be so starstruck by seeing her that I would stumble on my words. Everything she did was just so effortlessly cool, and I probably definitely had a small crush on her lol. She pulled off stuff that I could only dream of doing. I really wanted to learn more about her, but I don’t think we would have had a lot in common rip.

6. What is your personal “white whale”? Something you encountered in the the past and have never been able to find since, no matter how hard you try?

Honestly, I don’t think I have one? While I do enjoy obsessing over things, I always will let go of something after a while, whether it be a thought, idea, or thing, bc truthfully I just get bored with it. Like, if I want something, the longest that feeling will last is probably at most a couple years before I go, “well i guess I’m not getting it. Better move on”. I don’t like to chase after or they to find things that I deem as too hard or bothersome.

7. What was your favourite movie when you were a child? Does it still hold up now that you’re older?

SPIRITED AWAY AND LILO AND STITCH. Both are tied as my favorite movies ever. I’ve been watching Spirited Away since I was like a fetus, i watch it at least once or twice a year now, but as a kid i’d probably watch once every two weeks. It was my first anime, I loved how it was drawn differently than Disney, how it took place in Japan, a place i had several friends from, and how everything. Looked. So. Delicious. Not to mention how funny it was. It definitely still holds up today, and now as an artist I appreciate it even more. Meanwhile, I love Lilo and Stitch bc I’m a pacific islander! At the time, it was the only movie I’d ever seen about someone else who grew up on an island, and I really connected with Lilo. It was and is still SUPER hilarious. And now I actually connect with Nani a lot because I have a little sister. The bond is portrayed so well, which I couldn’t understand as a kid because I was an only child at the time. Even the way the characters speak and act is in such a relatable way that i can’t help but feel homesick. Also, i cry when i watch the movie during the scene where Nani sings. Super sad.

8. Do you have a favourite ‘local’ food? It could be a local delicacy unique to your town, but it could just be a particular snack from a particular shop. A favourite meal from your favourite restaurant, maybe, because nobody else makes it the same way that they do?

There’s this local donut shop called Krumpe’s which everyone in town goes to. Their donuts are pretty good, and even better warm. During New Year’s Eve they hand out free donuts during a “Donut Drop” (mocks the ball drop) we have every year. My brother is friends with the family’s son and i quite like the mother, who I once had a long talk with while we were sitting on a bench overlooking a pond.

9. Have you ever skipped school or work to hang out with your friends or to go to a particular event?

Haha, NO. I could never get away with leaving school, and honestly, I don’’t really have any friends I could ever do something like that with. My school calls our parents if were absent and attendance is really hard to get out of. The only thing I’ve ever missed school for was a field trip or college visit. When i was a sophomore however, I did tend to leave my last period class 15 minutes early to walk around and talk to the janitor (he’s really nice) bc we had a long term sub who was really cool.

10. What is something you’d love to collect but haven’t yet?

Sweatshirts i guess? I’d love to have sweatshirts from all over the world and places i’d visit. With how often I wear them I think i’d be pretty useful too.

11. Are you the kind of person who saves tickets from travelling? If not, what’s your favourite type of souvenir to collect?

Yup, always. I never really get to travel because of costs, so whenever i have a field trip i keep the ticket. So far, I have some Pentatonix and Two Cellos band tickets, and one from the MOMA and a couple other art museums.

documenting a dream i had

started out remarkably like high school musical i dont know why

there was a boy and he had a purple and yellow (?) bomber jacket, he was supposed to be troy and i guess i was supposed to be gabriella except i had no control over what gabriella does

guy (his name isnt actually troy but idk his name) has short brown hair and he looks like the standard 17-18 year old in a john green novel kinda way, the kind that is constantly turning to look at you and smiling at you

we were already casual friends before this cuz we have same classes but we were spending more time together these days idk why

sometimes when i meet him he’ll be wearing an orange and green sweater

someone with authority (i dont remember if it was a popular jock or a teacher) was pressuring him into doing something and i told them to back off (calmly i think) and that got us closer

then gabriella missed an opportunity somehow (i’m saying gabriella cuz i wasn’t lucid and making decisions at this point in the dream) by not showing up to something troy asked her to go to

this causes troy to lose interest in her quickly and thats when i lucidly ask myself why we called this high school musical because this has nothing to do with high school musical

so my subconscious switches it up ig and puts my POV in someone else. When i first see that “someone else” they (me) have a hoodie on and floppy black hair in front and they’re sitting on a motorcycle. They have this cute wide grin on.

the funny thing about this is that i have the POV of this person, i feel what they feel nd they have the same subconscious as me but i have no influence on what decisions they make, and there is no guarantee that we look the same.

well this person turned out to be a guy. i was shook cuz wow mlm in MY dream?? unexpected but yea a bunch of cute stuff happened i dont remember (which is so frustrating) but i remember at one point poking my nose into his cheek so that was cute ig and there was a whole confession scene where he said that he doesnt see me as a friend anymore and lots of hijinx and travelling here and there with a gang of misfits which i somehow belonged to

and then it starts to get wild

before anything else happens theres a little cutscene where my parents and i are in a house with an interior that looks similar to my grandfather’s house

the guys from my class irl are all there and i have no idea why. i also dk why they all look like seventeen members??

i go into the room that should be my grandfather’s room where he used to sleep and i hear my parents downstairs in the kitchen talking in broken Chinese to my male classmates asking them something dumb sounding.

After that I scold them cuz wow thats embarassing and they’re like oo we can’t talk to your classmates now?? so i was rly confused cuz since when do they know how to speak Chinese

then i rode on the guy’s motorcycle hugging his back, and we were yelling over the wind just to talk to each other

then for some reason this guy turned into a little kid so that he could be with me. we were standing in a garden when he told me and we hugged and his purple bomber jacket looked big on him now and the dream ends there

usually in my dreams there’s always some sort of romance involving myself and someone in the dream, but the romance only serves to heighten/match the aesthetic-ness of the place in my dream. and usually in that romance nothing in particular happens, the characters are just naturally inclined to each other and it’s fate i guess, and yeah that sort of dream romance is charming in its own way.

but what struck me most in this dream is how i woke up with the strongest feeling of love and being cared for. it’s usually simpler than that. usually i wake up craving the experience of a simple love. this time it was so complex that it made me feel emotional.

ive just never had a dream where the focal point is so obviously the romance and the buildup, and the dream scenery is just not really there. or maybe i have had dreams like that but this time I just don’t remember the scenery as much. idk but whatever it is, there’s a shift now. I think my subconscious is doing some tinkering.

Guest Lecture - Kate (Head Of Wallpaper)

Today we was lucky enough o head the head of wallpaper magazines photographic department come in to do a guest lecture, with my recent found love for Journalism photography I find the idea of having images within print based mediums a fantastic contribution to the photographical world.  Wallpaper magazine was founded in 1996 and is now in edition 100,460(Wallpaper (magazine), 2017). Kate’s journey into photography started out as quite a rough and harsh start as her dad didn’t see the point in her studying photography. In his words “theres no money in it”. Instead of following her dreams at a young age, Kate began to study English Lit at Belfast University but ended up dropping out halfway through her first year and began running a bar. About a year or so later she moved back down to London and continued running bars until she went to Gloster University to study bachelors in photography. Once she graduated she then once again moved back down to London and started working for an image library. I found this quite interesting as I myself am about to sign up to an image library in order to sell my images from the protests I have began attending. Websites such as Alamay which allow you to quickly upload your images to a stock gallery and get paid for doing it. As a student through Alamay you earn %100 of everything from your images if your university is signed up to the 100 percent scheme (100% students | Almay, 2017). Luckily for me LSBU is. I have emailed Daniel and I am currently awaiting the response. Whilst working for the company it was based around Kate putting images into photographers files ready to be sold to magazines and newspapers for usage, Kate does mention throughout this part of her talk that sadly there just isn’t a large market for this type of photography anymore. This could well be put down to the usage of phones that have good cameras on being so widely available to members of the public.

When she left this job, Kate then went on to become a JR agent at Webber, where she learnt the tools of her current trade as the head of photography at wallpaper. In kates words, Being an agent is quite allot like being a Mother, Wife and friend to your clients. You need to be able to manage to a professional stance on making sure the work gets done in a timely and coherent manner but also to be there for them if issues arise (such as photographers missing trains/flights). She said that a highlight of this part of her carrear was learning how to look through photographer’s portfolios and what to spot. A big piece of advice that I have taken on from this part of her talk was when Kate mentioned not to just accept the first person who want’s to represent your photography. This for me is quite important as I feel before this lecture I may have done this. Kate speaks to us about how often agents and their reputation can often effect the photographers that work under(or with) them. An agent will normally take at least a %20 cut of whatever you have earned from the shoot as their production costs of getting you the job, so you need to make sure you pick a good agent.

As the head of photography at such a large agency, on one average job you are in charge of communicating a number of thing between the client and photographer. For instance

A.      The location – Where will the shoot be? Where to place the camera.

B.      Time Of Day – Is the shot better taken in daylight or at night?

C.      Who is good enough at the location – is there anyone around the location to save the cost of flying or driving someone out to the place of the shoot

D.      Can the person who is good enough relay information to the client correctly (Talk in a professional manner?)

E.       Which is the correct manner to take the image (Portrait or Landscape?)

F.       Budgets and fees – this normally involves spending a couple of hours on the phone speaking with the accounts department of the agency you’re working for. Kate says that you want to try and aim for as much as possible to make the shoot look as good as you can. It seems to me that money does play a HUGE part in photography.

G.     Booking flights and hotels – This can also come under making sure the photographer doesn’t miss the flight or miss the stop to get to the client, and making sure the photographer can get to the client on time. (As much as you represent them, They also represent you. So anything they do whilst on the shoot can reflect good or bad on you!)

H.      Speaking with the creative director of the magazine to see if there is anything they want to input into the style or creativity of the shoot

I.        Can the photographer deal with having little to no creative input if neccicary?

J.        Can the photographer manage to send images directly to me throughout the shoot, So you can advise on how the crop looks, and to change different aspects of the image.

Wallpaper doesn’t sell any products, but more so choose the products to be featured within the magazine. This is one of things you get to do when you achieve a luxury status. Advertisers generally always accept when they are approached by magazines such as Wallpaper as it’s a great thing to add to the list of publications on the website.

The only real particular project that caught my interest from todays guest lecture that Wallpaper had produced was “The Final Fronteir”. The brief was quite simple, To go to Mexico where the Virgin “space hub” was and take images of the space suits that members of the public and others who are a part of the project would be wearing if they are taking part within the flight. The brief did have a slight twist as they wasn’t allowed to show the face of the person wearing said suit, which did cause some production issues among the photographer and director of the photo-shoot.

Overall from this talk, I have noticed that the running of a magazine seems to work quite closely to how we run the south bank collective. In a sense that we have directors who overseeing the day to day running of operations within the collective, project managers such as myself who communicate between jobs and work out pricing for different jobs, and then we have the photographers and retouchers who do the bulk of the work. This is how it seems that wallpaper is run so by working for the collective, its giving me an excellent idea of how a business should be run. Although If I did want to gain some more information about how agenises such as Wallpaper work, they do run an internship program which generally runs throughout the summer months. Interns for this Wallpaper generally do quite allot of the admin work but do quite often get put onto shoots so they can observe how things work in the field.  Kate mentions about when she is looking for someone to work with her, she generally looks at their attitude towards photography, EG have they worked within a photographic industry before?  Do they have a similar taste to the other photographers working among the agency; this is mainly to avoid any creative differences whilst on shoots. The final thing to check is the work history. Kate mentions that to join an agency generally you need to have quite a good portfolio with a wide range of work from all different suits within photography
