I was reminded of and carried through the darker times in my life where I struggled with addiction, feeling like I was attached to an invisible cord as a puppeteer for the energies of the unknown black parts of life. Struggling with the thought of using this cord as a ways to an ends, Bret Esterling's solo in BRECHT had a profound madness to his movement that sent me straight back to those grueling times of my life, in LADP's Facebook live stream excerpt on March 12th.

The beginning of the dance I started out with a lot of confusion, a lot of the same confusion I started with when I began following this irresistible cord of life I had once been attracted to, and now I was following Esterling as he traveled down this ruthless path. He started out with slow, gentle steps across this room that was entangled with many cords criss-crossing throughout the floor, pulling at an invisible cord unknowingly understanding what he was getting himself into. His steps turned from gentle to striking, and then he would pause in confusion at where the cord was taking him, into somewhere lost and driven by fear.

There were tall microphone stands filled with mics that were enhancing the sounds of his feet gliding across the floor, him being dragged by this awful journey. The only sound in the background, was the static of his mind, and the intensity of his feet hitting the ground as he's being pulled. The movement was very strong in the beginning, very resistant and strained. He showed more control of his path, and the ways in which this cord began to guide him. He would combat the cord with patience, and gentle steps toward it, pausing for moments at a time to rethink his movements looking around in bewilderment.

The cord continued to take charge, and his movements while trying to stay connected, yet disconnected to the cord continued to get more and more aggressive. He started doing balancing movements from one leg to the next, putting one leg in the air as the other tried to gather his body. These movements were delicate with power, he wasn't ready to give up his fight. His timing became quicker, and he was beginning to use of more of the space around him, he begins to add some slapping sounds to the frequent glides of his feet on the ground, almost as in an argumentative way towards the dissent of the cord. As his path continued to become entrapped, we saw him quarrel with the desperation of life. He started spinning and jumping, showing the cord wrap around his entire physique. He was becoming trapped, no matter how fast he spun, how destructive his patterns got, it seemed he couldn't get this threatening life cord off of himself.

With the static still blaring in the background, he was beginning to use more and more of the space in his mind, being controlled by the uncontrollable. His movements were no longer his own, they became ravaged by the unknown, something unthinkable to thinkable. He shows himself wrapping this cord around his neck involuntarily, then unwrapping it expressing that he hasn't given up just yet, he still has more fight left in him. His movements have become more striking, energetic and rigid, he's doing flips, and kicks, his arms going up, down, and spirals. He is creating more aggressive energy on himself with more frequent harder slaps that create the feeling of anger and anxiety. These movements, with the feelings, and the sounds bring him to flopping onto a mic stand and landing on his bottom in absolute defeat.

He sits in disgust, unmoving. As more and more moments pass he does nothing, but grieve the failure that he has become. Moments go by, and as his movements become low, he slithers on the floor, succumbing to the cord of life. He moves slow, more delicate as he reaches for his newfound way to cope. He has surrendered to the cord, and will go however it asks. His mind fuels on more anger and anxiety, as we begin to hear the early slapping of the hands, the squeak from the dragging of the feet, create this monotonous rhythm. He stands and the unknown has taken over his movements, he's only a puppet now, allowing this cord to fill his void, while the movements are repetitive and get more anxiety ridden he becomes more uncontrolled, in his head filled with anger.

His movements are strong, but not because he wants them to be strong, he is engaging in toxic behavior, allowing someone or something to repeatedly wrap itself around his neck, then unwrap, over and over for quite some time. The timing is frantic, giving you anxiety, like will he make the right decision to finally tell it NO, I am in control; or will he continue to surrender to it. The rhythm gets faster, the lighting gets faster, darker, shallower, he's given in. The cord has taken over his light of life, he's convulsing on the ground, movements fast, space widely unmanageable'. Both, the movements and space start to slow, shorten. He takes his last few moments of breath, overdosing on the floor, letting the unknown cord completely fill him as his movements come to a stop, the lighting and rhythm intensify to the most.

He finishes with standing, holding a mic, breathing hard, looking dead in the camera, his eyes saying, He will never give up.

Humans are enslaved by different means and the most powerful one is by being choked up by financial worries of this world.
