hiii, love your musicals edits ❤️ where do you get shows is such high quality? I miss Broadway 😢
thank you! so I usually use promo footage from different musicals. if a full pro shoot is available I'll use that but those are few and far between so usually I just have to work with the few promo clips available. I usually find them on youtube or the shows social media page. playbill and broadway.com post a lot of promo clips as well as behind the scenes stuff and interviews!

My Shot — VoicePlay music video
youtube
VoicePlay released their "Aca Top 10 — Broadway" countdown in late 2014, just a few months before Hamilton took the world by storm. That timing was lucky for the rest of us, because it gave the guys an incentive to cover (most of) an entire song from the show rather than just a snippet.
Details:
title: My Shot
original performers: cast of Hamilton: An American Musical (2015)
written by: Lin-Manuel Miranda & Alex Lacamoire
arranged by: Layne Stein
release date: 1 June 2016
My favorite bits:
Layne replicating that crisp military drum cadence
turning some of the rap lyrics into sung lines in order to recreate the orchestral sound and add extra harmonies
Earl getting a chance to use his French accent again
pitching down the second "How you say?" for emphasis
the staccato harmonies and quick cuts on ♫ "And when I fight I make the other side pan-i-cky." ♫
their sparse vocalizations under Layne's quiet Burr bars, punctuated by his explosion sound effect 💥
the reverb on the lead vocals in the ending section
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trivia:
The cover art for the audio track was designed by the group's longtime friend and collaborator Jeff Thatcher.
Geoff wore socks with little pictures of cured bone-in pork shoulders on them during the video shoot in his own private version of "ham for Ham". (He didn't acquire them for the occasion, though. He'd had them for at least 3 years. The man just really enjoys fun socks.)
Earl rediscovered the jacket from this video in early 2020. It still fit him perfectly.
They fairly clearly cast Eli as Hamilton, Earl as Lafayette, and Layne as Burr. Cutting out Laurens and Mulligans' character-specific lines means we don't know which roles Tony and Geoff were intended to represent, but I like to think that costume designer Tony is a natural fit for tailor's apprentice Mulligan.
VoicePlay released this video a couple weeks before the 2016 Tony Awards, at which Hamilton was nominated for a record-breaking 16 awards in 13 categories, and won 11 of them.
As noted by Geoff in the outro, Layne and Eli filmed a short series of videos on audio production in partnership with Full Sail University.
This video was filmed in the REBL HQ studio at Full Sail University, and several of their students helped with the set construction and video production.
During the filming prep, some of the guys recorded a bit of advice about standing out among the millions of creators on YouTube.
They got some nice press coverage in Broadway.com's "Video Odds & Ends" column, on PRWeb, and with a local news station.
Eli, Geoff, and Layne did a livestreamed Q&A on release day at the studio with REBL HQ's general manager, Drew Walkup. The VoD has since been made private, but there are a couple clips on Instagram in which Layne offers advice for creators, and Geoff answers a question about his injury during the "Phantom" set construction.

I have to ask-- who's Ramin Karimloo and how do you pronounce his name?
Tumblr media
Ahem.
Easy part out of the way first, and man, I really wish I had a video that was a compilation of everyone mispronouncing his name (accidentally or for laughs), and all the times he corrects/ explains how his name is pronounced. XD Someone please make this for me, I’ll find the appropriate clips to send you to be edited together lol.
Ramin
Ra (like the Egyptian sun god, someone who’s not me would make a “he’s hot” joke…)
-meen (the opposite of Ramin’s kind nature)
Karimloo
Kar (he’s very caring) -
im (he is such an imp actually???)
loo (what can I say, he’s a bit of a loon, a bit loopy: he’s a dork)
Ramin is:
youngest actor to play the Phantom/Erik in The Phantom of the Opera in a professional production (not sure if this is still to date?)
only actor to play all three men in Christine’s (Phantom of the Opera) life, as the Phantom, Raoul, and Christine’s father in the 2004 film.
Canadian-Iranian, whose family escape from the revolution in their homeland when he was a baby and eventually settled in Ontario.
met his hero, Colm Wilkinson, played both iconic characters Colm has played, Colm is proud of his actor Son. Literally, I could go on about the long story of Colm and Ramin and how precious they are whenever they appear together, but I will spare you for now.
fell in love with musical theater as a hockey-playing jock when he went to see POTO because it was better than classwork. Bet his buddies he would be the Phantom - and he did.
his wife and two sons are the sun, moon, stars, gravity, and oxygen in his universe.
believes that following your dream means actually getting out there and working your butt off to get it done and never giving up until you make it and don’t stop once you get there - you’re never owed anything.
Should Have Won That Tony In 2014.
did NOT want to play Jean Valjean in Les Miserables because he was afraid of doing it poorly, WAS ASKED to “do me a favor” and play Valjean by the show’s producer, and then became one of the most beloved actors to portray the character in the show’s long history.
lowkey fans will tell you he is sexy
highkey fans will tell you he is an adorkable nerd
actually: both equally are true.
steals his co-stars’ candy a lot
has. the best??? smile??? and laugh???? ever??????
personally, got me through a period of time where I was extremely depressed and apathetic: inspired me, gave me good music and happy content, made me get out there and do stuff.
passionate
currently can be seen as the antagonist of Anastasia, the Broadway Musical
AS FOR HIS SINGING VOICE. WELL. LET ME TELL YOU:
First time (questionably??? I don’t remember, but I think) I saw/heard him:
youtube
Something more recent:
youtube
and something incredible:
youtube
Now, if you are interested, the best ways to learn about this adorable dork are just to watch the YouTube vlogs from Broadway.com that are Vlogger 24601, and the current Royal Misfits vlog.
Thanks for letting me talk about my hero!

The People in the Picture is a “memory musical” about Bubbie, a grandmother now living in New York (Donna Murphy), recalling her life as a Yiddish Theatre alum and a victim of the Holocaust in Pre-War Poland. The limited engagement ran at Roundabout Theatre Company’s Studio 54 starting April 1, 2011, for previews, and officially opened on April 28, 2011. The show closed on June 19, 2011, as scheduled. Music was by Mike Stoller & Artie Butler, Lyrics were by Iris Rainer Dart, and the Book was by Iris Rainer Dart.
The People in the Picture received mixed reviews, but Donna Murphy got some attention.
The Donna Murphy-led musical earned nominations from Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and the Tony Awards. Iris Rainer Dart earned a nomination from Drama Desk for Outstanding Book of a Musical, Mike Stoller and Artie Butler earned a Drama Desk nomination as well for Outstanding Music, and Donna Murphy earned the show it’s only Tony and OCC award which was Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical (Tony Award) and Outstanding Actress in a Musical (Outer Critics Circle) as well as a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Musical.
The Tony-Nominated musical starred Donna Murphy (Bubbie / Raisel), Chip Zien (Yossie Pinsker), Alexander Gemignani (Moishe Rosenwald), Christopher Innvar (Chaim Bradovsky), Nicole Parker (Red), Rachel Resheff (Jenny), Hal Robinson (Doovie Feldman / Rabbi Velvel), Lewis J. Stadlen (Avram Krinsky), and Joyce Van Patten (Chayesel Fisher).
Now it’s time for.. COOLDOGE’S OPINION!
I don’t know much about this musical, but I’ve seen clips from Playbill and Broadway.com and I’d say it’s ok. It’s not the best. And I think that some people might’ve fallen asleep during this 2 hour and 15-minute show. I’m not trying to be rude btw. But overall, I think that this show gives a good message. It’s just that the music and lyrics aren’t all that great. I think the movie set scene and the poster are cool though. :D
Welp, that’s all! :D

Musical Theatre Themed Ask
Okay, I’m gonna answer... all of these! (Because I have a paper to write and zero motivation. And also: musicals.)
Oh, and by the way, I’m going to assume that every “Broadway” is a “Broadway/West End” because Tumblr is a free platform.
1. What was the first musical you saw?
Mary Poppins, West End, 2006 (not 100% sure about the year)
2. What musical got you really  into theatre?
Les Misérables - saw the film, started stalking the actors, you know how it goes.
3. Who was your first Broadway crush?
Aaron Tveit (he’s the main one) and Samantha Barks - like I said, stalking the Les Mis actors...
4. Name three of your current Broadway crushes.
Um... still Aaron Tveit? Plus Rob Houchen (Les Mis London) and Cleve September (In the Heights London and soon Hamilton London) - Also, I get “talent crushes” not physical attraction crushes.
5. Name four of your dream roles.
Only 4? Natalie Goodman, Enjolras, Maureen Johnson, and HERCULES MULLIGAN!!
(I can’t sing, act, or dance, nor am I a man, so...)
6. Favourite off-broadway show:
Heathers and The Last Five Years
7. Favourite cast recording.
Gotta be Hamilton, it’s just such a well-produced album. Bonus points for including nearly the entire show.
8. 2013 Tony opening number or 2016 Tony opening number?
2012? The Book of Mormon thing is just pure gold!
9. Favourite show currently on Broadway.
Broadway: I guess Hamilton - There are way too few that I actually know.
West End: Les Misérables forever!
10. A musical that closed and you’re still bitter about. Rant a bit.
In the Heights London! Though I can’t really complain, they extended their initially run several times and now they’ve cast my amazing Sonny as Laurens/Philip, so... But it was just so good!!
11. Best stage to screen adaptation?
Les Misérables. Controversial, I know, but I usually kind of hate movie musicals. With this one they did something new and different and I think it works. The Last Five Years is pretty good too, though it lost a lot in the adaptation (couldn’t be avoided).
12. Worst  stage to screen adaptation?
Rent. I’m sorry, I love the show, I love the cast, but it all feels so staged and wrong and meh. Also, they cut Goodbye Love and left in fucking Santa Fé which adds exactly nothing to the plot!!
13. Favourite #ham4ham?
Gotta be the Schuyler Georges, but there have been so many great ones...
14. A musical you would love to see produced by Deaf West?
Oh, tricky... Maybe Next to Normal? That has a lot to do with people holding things in and failing to see each others’ struggles.
15. If you could revive any musical, which one would it be and who would you cast in it?
Not exactly a revival, but bring Next to Normal to the West End already! That show’s got a sodding Pulitzer. And London’s only a 2 hour flight away from where I live, not a transatlantic one, so I might actually be able to go see it.
Oh, and give Spring Awakening another chance, West End. Maybe adapt some American Sign Language into British Sign Language and...?
Also, maybe revive Rent, Broadway? (And cast Aaron Tveit as Roger... please?)
16. If you could go to a concert at the 54 below, who’s would it be?
That list would be waaaaaayyy too long...
17. Do you watch broadway.com vlogs? Which one is your favourite?
I’ve seen a few, but I don’t really watch them on a regular basis, so no favourites...
18. Make a Broadway related confession.
I really, really hate South Pacific. It was part of our American drama syllabus, as an example of a musical. Quite apart from the fact that I think it’s a godawful, sort of racist and sexist show (it’s from the 40s, go figure), it displays LITERALLY EVERY cliché about musicals!
19. What do musicals mean to you?
Hard to say... Apart from hours and hours of ALL the emotions, some awesome internet buddies (looking at you, @frei-und-schwerelos), I’ve got generally more interested in and knowledgable about theatre, which is a great asset when you study English. Musicals have also introduced me to a wide range of music I wouldn’t normally listen to and so many talented people I wouldn’t have known about otherwise...
20. Express some love for understudies and swings!
Okay here goes: I went to see the West End production of Memphis because of Killian Donnelly and then he unexpectedly wasn’t on that night - bummer. But then Jon Robyns just knocked it out of the part (and I only ever listened to Avenue Q and Spamalot because I watched clips of him when he was in those shows).
My first Thénardier was Adam Pearce and his version of “It was me wot told you so...” is the funniest one I’ve ever heard (he kind of went “No? Sorry, fair enough.”).
The second time I saw the show Adam Bayjou was Valjean and his Bring Him Home was one of the best I’ve ever heard (effortless high notes).
Also, Charlotte Kennedy was Cosette that time (she’s principal Cosette now) and her performance was so incredibly sweet! (She also brought some brunette power into the sea of blond that were Marius and Éponine.)
And Jordan Lee Davies was Bamatabois both times and he was great!
Oh, and my Christine from Phantom was the wonderful Lisa-Anne Wood.
21. Best Disney musical:
Mary Poppins - My first ever musical, fond memories, I still wear the Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious shirt my dad bought me (11 years ago... didn’t fit then, fits now).
22. Which Disney movie should be made into a musical?
Uh, I don’t know. Tangled’s funny...
23. Which musical fandom has the funniest memes?
Hamilton and Les Mis. I mean, the Les Mis/Mean Girls crossovers alone...
24. Name a character from a musical you would sort into your Hogwarts house.
Well, the test sorted me into Hufflepuff (great house), but I know that I am a Ravenclaw (and, as we know, the hat listens to you). Okay, Ravenclaw... maybe Melchior from Spring Awakening?
25. Name a Broadway star you would sort into your Hogwarts house.
Ugh, that’s even harder! Sorry, no clue.
26. Best on stage chemistry?
Hmm from what I’ve seen live, Rob Houchen and Carrie Hope Fletcher were pretty darn amazing together.
From what I haven’t seen live, Jennifer Damiano and Adam Chanler-Berat, and Justin Johnston and Michael McElroy seemed fantastic.
27. A Broadway duo you love.
I’m gonna say Jonathan Groff and Lin-Manuel Miranda, but I’m not sure I understand the question...
28. What book, tv show, movie, biography, video game, etc. should be turned into a musical?
Umm... I don’t know. Supernatural sort of is a musical... A Lord of the Rings musical in the style of A Very Potter Musical might be fun. The Fellowship of the Sing? I’ll show myself out.
29. If you could make a jukebox musical, what artist or genre would you pick?
I doubt many people know her but: Vienna Teng. For three reasons (aside from me liking her songs): 1. Her songs tell stories. 2. She often writes from the perspective of “characters.” 3. Her songs are actual poetry!
30. Favourite role played by _________________?
I don’t get it. What am I supposed to put here?
31. What musical has made you cry the most?
I don’t actually cry often at musicals (internally I do), but It’s Quiet Uptown from Hamilton got me bad the first time. And I once listened to Next to Normal when I was already feeling like shit - bad idea! (Don’t listen to There’s a World when you kind of want there to not be a world, kids...)
32. What musical has made you laugh the most?
Probably Avenue Q and Something Rotten
33. Current showtune stuck in you head:
Well, you just put Hard to Be the Bard in my head!
34. A musical that has left you thinking about life for a long time or deeply inspired you.
Les Misérables... I haven’t spent a single week without thinking about that show (or, indeed, the book) since early 2013.
Next to Normal also gave me a lot to think about.
I keep discovering new little bits of genius in Hamilton lyrics. Also, I’m writing a paper on the early US for the second time in under a year and characters from Hamilton (otherwise know as historical figures) keep popping up. Seriously, I’m writing about the Whiskey Rebellion and every time I read Hamilton’s name my brain goes PAY YOUR FUCKING TAXES!
I’ve also thought quite a bit about Heathers and The Last Five Years, because both of them have had productions where they genderbended (genderbent?) a main character, which made me think about how it changes the story and why.
35. If you could perform any ensemble number , which one would you pick?
“If you could...” Are you implying that I don’t?! Come on, any theatre geek who claims never to have done a solo rendition of One Day More is definitely lying! Oh, and I rapped myself all the way through One Shot the other day and made only one mistake - one that Lin’s made before, so I’m proud!
36. Name a musical you didn’t like at first but ended up loving.
I don’t think that’s really happened... There have been shows where I thought “What in the holy hell is this?!” and ended up loving it. I mean, what in the holy hell is Avenue Q?!
37. What are some costumes you’d love to try on?
Give me that red vest! Also, let me play Enjolras! Yes, I know I’m a woman and can only hit that low “foooorm” when I’ve got a really bad cold, but fuck all that!
I’d also really like to try on Elphaba’s Act II dress, because it’s epic!
38. Favourite dance break.
Hmmm... I don’t really have one? The one in Cool and the ballet in Somewhere where they sort of replay what’s happened are pretty amazing (both West Side Story).
39. Favourite Starkid musical:
A Very Potter Musical is the only one I know... Sorry...
40. What’s a musical more people should know about?
Well, where I live, most people have heard of Cats, Phantom, and Mamma Mia and that’s about it.
But in general, I’ve never met anyone who’s even heard of Assassins (although many people who have met me have now heard everything about Assassins - I’m that kind of person).
41. What are some lines from musicals you really like?
Okay, this is gonna take a while...
"Can you remind me of what it was like at the top of the world?” (In the Heights)
“Oh, my friends, my friends, don’t ask me what your sacrifice was for.” (Les Misérables - internal Niagara Falls!)
“Here, put some hail into the chief.” (Assassins)
“But the sky’s gonna hurt when it falls. So you’d better start building some walls.” (Heathers)
“I’m not mad that you got mad when I got mad when you said I should go drop dead!” (Tick, Tick... Boom!)
“My God, in God we trust, but we never really know what God discussed.” (Hamilton)
“What doesn’t kill me doesn’t kill me.” (Next to Normal)
And just for fun: “Honest living, honest living, honest living, honest living,...” (Rent)
42. Name a Tony performance you rewatch and rewatch.
In the Heights, Next to Normal, Hamilton, and Spring Awakening (both versions).

hi! so sorry to bug you but i was wondering if you use a specific set of show clips when you gif great comet? they don't seem to have the typical broadway.com collection that a lot of shows have. thanks!!
you're not a bother at all! I have a folder with about a couple dozen clips from various productions of the show. almost all are from youtube, I think one is from their instagram page. I will link some below :)
most of them I got from the musicals official youtube page which you can find here. I especially love the behind the scenes interviews with various cast members bc a lot of clips are spliced through out the video. then there's this one here about set design from broadway.com. and here is a trailer that they posted on their instagram but I can never find on youtube for some reason?
here is their performance on good morning america, here is their performance on today and here is their tony performance.
the american repertory theater also has a few clips from their off broadway production here, here, here and here. here and here are clips from the ars nova off broadway production.
some of the international productions have clips as well. here they are for the korean production. here and here are clips from the japanese production. here, here, here, and here are clips from the brazilian production.

With the Tony Nominations today I was able to talk to several people about this spectacular season and I kept getting the question, “how do you stay up to date with current Broadway shows?” It’s hard to stay connected to Broadway if you’re like me and you live miles away and can’t visit NYC, but here are some of my tips for staying up to date on current Broadway shows, and knowing what to look for during awards season, even if you can’t see these shows live.
Getting to know shows without seeing them live
- First I’ll just get it out of the way: bootlegs. But if thats not your thing thats totally fine!
- Listen to cast albums! This year the 4 musicals nominated for best musical have all released some sort of cast album. The Great Comet one is off-broadway, but they have released the first song from their Broadway cast album. If you’re having trouble following the story try listening to all the songs in order, and then reading a summary online.
- Watch (legal) recorded performances! Several of the new musicals this season performed on the Today Show recently. Additionally, many musicals perform on different talk shows in NYC. There are also several benefits that cast members attend, and although they don’t often sing songs from their respective shows the performances are always fun and full of heart. (My personal favorite benefit is Miscast)
- Follow tech people on social media to see cool progress on different aspects of shows, especially costume and sets! I love David Korin’s instagram. This year he designed the sets for Dear Evan Hansen, War Paint, and Bandstand. Throughout the season he posted cool videos and sketches of the set process.
Staying up to date on Broadway news
- My personal favorite source of news is the Playbill Post. This is on the Playbill instagram story almost everyday, and provides quick and well written articles about current and upcoming shows.
- The New York Times sends FREE theater news emails once a week, and the articles that are sent to you are fairly easy to customize.
- broadwayworld.com chatboards are a cool way to easily connect with other theater lovers about current shows, or they can just be a nice break from critics.
- I love the broadway.com buzz section, and broadway.com also posts clips of current shows.
Predicting awards and nomination
- Reviews are obviously a great way to see critical reception if you can’t see a show!
- Playbill does a nice roundup of reviews the day after shows open, and they usually post the story on the Playbill Post.
- If you’re just going to read one review, read The New York Times review. It’s often regarded as the make-or-break review for a show.
- If you’re predicting for the Tonys, look at what has already been nominated for different awards, like the Drama Desk Awards. Also the Pulitzer Prize is a good indicator of what play/musical will be nominated.
Theater is super accessible in this day and age, and with all the incredible new shows I couldn’t be happier! And remember: even if you can’t see shows on Broadway there are still touring, community, and school productions so you can see something live! Happy awards season everyone!!!

This Week on Broadway ~ 5/20-5/26
As promised, here is my feedback on the latest Broadway.com show, summarizing the news from the past week!
The Band’s Visit is coming to Broadway this fall and I am ALL about it. I was fortunate enough to see it during its (now award-winning!) off-Broadway run at the Linda Gross Theatre this past season, and was intrigued. It’s far from a perfect show, and it definitely needed some work to be of Broadway caliber, but I have no doubt they’ve made those changes in the time since. The story itself is very unique and focuses on a part of the world that doesn’t get much attention in the Broadway community, which is really exciting. Not to mention Katrina Lenk is a gorgeous singer and human being. Here’s hoping she makes the transfer to Broadway along with the show. The Band’s Visit will be at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre with previews beginning on October 7th of this year.
You’ve probably heard that a second Mamma Mia! movie is on its way. Substance-wise, the first one was far from a great movie, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t spend many a Saturday night with my gals reenacting the scene with Sophie and Sky on the beach singing “Lay All Your Love on Me.” The chorus of chiseled men with flippers coming out of the ocean is #iconic. So even though it’ll likely be a cinematic disgrace, I may or may not be watching the first one as I wait in anticipation.
Encores! at New York City Center is presenting a new concert next year, called “Hey, Look Me Over!” Encores! is known for putting up musicals with very little rehearsal time for a few performances. They’ve done a lot of amazing shows, but this new concert is going to be a collection of songs from musicals Encores! has yet to produce. I think this is a brilliant idea, and I’m pretty bummed I’ll be missing it. Catch it February 7-11, 2018, at New York City Center.
John Cameron Mitchell is working on a new autobiographical musical TV show, titled Homunculus. JCM plans to star in the series, which currently does not have a set timeline. I’m thrilled about this. Hedwig is a fantastic piece of theatre, and I imagine JCM is aware of how high he’s already set the bar for himself. I only hope it gets picked up by a network like HBO, where he won’t have to censor himself. If we’re being honest though, it’s probably more likely to show up on Fox or something of that nature.
Possibly the most exciting news (imho) is that Santino Fontana is slated to take on the leading role of Michael Dorsey in the upcoming June development reading for the musical adaptation of Tootsie. I have mixed feelings about all of the musicals being adapted from pre-existing movies (I’d like to see more original content), but Tootsie is a comedic classic and with Santino on board, I can’t imagine it being anything short of fantastic. If you can’t tell, I really love Santino. Not to mention, I found out the book is being written by David Yazbek...yup, that’s right -- The Band’s Visit!
As of last night, Brendon Urie has officially stepped into the high heels of Charlie Price, leading man of Kinky Boots. Like many other musical theatre fans, it rubs me slightly the wrong way when a Hollywood person just steps into a leading role on Broadway. I could go on for pages about why that’s frustrating, but I won’t, because if you’re reading this you probably get it. I try to keep an open mind, though, when somebody new joins the theatre community. I got off on the wrong foot with my opinions of Brendon Urie immediately while watching an interview in which he called the musical he’s doing a “play,” and then called a cast recording a “soundtrack.” They may be small things, but it just shows the distance between theatre-bred actors and Hollywood. I decided to give him another chance, however, and watch the newly released video of him singing Charlie’s heartbreaking number, “Soul of a Man.” I should preface this by saying I LOVE role-originator Stark Sands, and have watched the video of him doing this song a million times. What’s so wonderful about his performance (besides his inhumanly perfect vocals) is the fact that even when he’s in the studio with no obligation to “act,” he still puts on the full performance as he records because every time he sings the song he wants the full emotional experience for the listener. When I watched Brendon Urie perform, on the stage of the show, knowing he was being recorded, it seemed like a concert to me. He sounded fantastic as I presumed he would, but I felt nothing watching it. It was just a boring ballad. That’s what separates mediocre theatre from great theatre -- performers who are so emotionally invested in what they’re doing, you can’t help but be on the journey with them. I hope Brendon finds that deeper connection to the music soon, because his voice suits the material so well. Catch Urie in Kinky Boots at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre through August 6th.
Kevin Spacey is hosting the Tonys, and I’m excited. I wasn’t sure how to feel at first, but now I’m just pumped. Nothing real to report there, just had to say it. The Tonys will air live Sunday, June 11th, on CBS 8pm-11pm EST.
Finally, the promo for Falsettos on “Live at Lincoln Center” for PBS was released and it is everything I wished that it would be. I know the cast album like the back of my hand, and listening to those songs as images and clips from the performance rolled by made me so emotional. I can’t wait to see the full thing!

If we were to ask Sondheim to write a patriotic song, says @bstokesmitchell, it’d be “The Flag Song,” cut from Assassins,”and he wrote it 30 years ago” You can gripe All you like, You can sneer, “Where are the heroes?” You can shout about How everything’s a lie. Then that flag goes by… …Then that flag goes by, And no matter how you sigh, “It’s the bright blue sky, It’s just Mom and apple pie,” There’s this thing you can’t deny, This idea: That it’s fixable tomorrow, We’ve a chance, There’s a choice. We can change ourselves tomorrow, We’re in charge, We’ve a voice, An idea about tomorrow To remember When the flag has gone by.
To celebrate Stephen Sondheim’s 90th birthday (which actually took place on March 22, 2020), Raúl Esparza organized a concert extravaganza on the 50th anniversary of the opening of Sondheim’s Company, featuring some 45 songs and tributes over two and a half hours (not including the hour-long technical delay)  Below are both the entire show, courtesy of Broadway.Com,  and the playlist. But first, some highlights.
With help from his two children, Neil Patrick Harris sings “The Witch’s Rap” from Into The Woods

Beanie Feldstein and Ben Platt sing “It Takes Two” from Into The Woods

Josh Groban sings “Children Will Listen” from Into the Woods and “Not While I’m Around” from Sweeney Todd

Raúl Esparza sings “Take Me To The World” from Evening Primrose as part of the concert he organized (and named after that song). In case the musical is unfamiliar to you, it was written specifically for the TV series, ABC Stage 67, broadcast on November 16, 1966, and never made it to Broadway. With a book by James Goldman based on a John Collier’s short story, it’s a spooky tale about a group who secretly live in a department store, never venturing outside.

Donna Murphy sings “Send in the Clowns” from A Little Night Music
youtube
Annaleigh Ashford and Jake Gyllenhaal sing “Move On” from Sunday in the Park with George
youtube
Patti LuPone sings “Anyone Can Whistle,” from one of the earliest musicals for which he supplied the full score (1964), while she reveals another room in her fabulous home.

Christine Baranski, Audra McDonald, & Meryl Streep sing “The Ladies Who Lunch” from Company, and very convincingly simulate drinking. (If there was an 11 o’clock number in this concert, this was it — and it occurred at 11 o’clock.)

You’ll notice that none of these video clips offered the full song. For that, the complete concert, below. (The full Ladies Who Lunch number, for example, starts at around 158:45.) The concert is a fundraiser for ASTEP (Artists Striving to End Poverty)
