If you've been following me for a while (or since the BBS days), you’ll know how rabid I go when I see a pair of the yellow-soled Mustard brand shoes in a show. The most recent being in Hidden Agenda worn by Zo…but they're not the ones on this list. Oh no, it's Joke's blue-soled shoes which made me sit up and scream this time...meaning even their shoes were colour-coded in this show. Oh how I wish I could buy a pair of each.

There were many fabulous outfits in Laws of Attraction (especially Charn's) but Tanthai's green rope shirt wins out for me. Green seemed to be used in the show to represent the lies and secrets Tanthai was forced to keep because of his father, and he was metaphorically bound and trapped in these lies and his life. Ah perfection!

I've mentioned a lot of brilliant items but there have also been many awful ones, and the one I can't seem to stop thinking about (or horrifying over) is the Droopy Tits shirt (or Nipple Protector, whichever way you want to call it) which first appeared in Dangerous Romance and then The Jungle just three days later. I'm surprised we haven't seen it again to be honest, but I imagine if we get more spoiled rich kids we probably will.

These next two aren't specific items but more of a shout out to the whole wardrobe design of the shows.

First, Only Friends, with Mew and Ray's transformation to Ray and Sand's (respective) wardrobe choices, as well as the inversion of colours to highlight differences in relationships, and the use of colour-groupings to separate characters (<- a post i have yet to write). I wish I could write more about it…but life is just too busy to give it the time it needs.

The second is, of course, Ai Di and Chen Yi in Kiseki: Dear to Me with how they always share a colour in their different outfits. @respectthepetty details this perfectly here, so I don't need to. I am however still feral about these two and can't wait to do a full re-watch of the show.

And lastly, much like Baseball Mom in Bad Buddy two years ago (and to be honest many of Pat's other shirts), Aof recently gifted us another absolutely ridiculous but brilliantly poignant t-shirt slogan in Mhok's Fart Proudly shirt in Last Twilight, which I went into detail about here. Just A+

Iowa Goodwill Thrift Haul

Thrifting has become a new hobby and obsession of mine. I have always been into fashion and had a love for clothes all my life. My three different closets can test for that. But it wasn’t till this past winter I found Haley’s Corner on Youtube. She inspired something deep within me. She is the literal queen of thrifting. After watching almost her whole channel of videos I knew this is something I could try out. Low and behold my first ever thrifting adventure and haul.

Davenport and Bettendorf Iowa were my first two cities to test the waters of thrifting. What other places to have your first thrifting adventure than Goodwill! I was ecstatic to find that both places had pretty decent sized shopping carts upon arrival. I didn’t have a list going into either place other than don’t spend more than $60 at each place. I held pretty well to my limit too. The first place was Goodwill in Davenport on Villa Drive. The place was smaller than I originally anticipated but none the less I found many gems. This store had a steller denim section but sadly had no men’s t-shirt section. Their men section was not that stellar. The second stop was Goodwill Bettendorf. This store was a lot bigger than the first stop. They had a great ladies’ top section. It’s where I scored the Master’s Golf tank. This store also had a section dedicated solely to activewear. I score brands like Nike and Underarmour for dirt cheap. It’s safe to say both stops will be shopped at again in the near future. Now each brand of thrift stores is different from how they sort the merchandise. I choose Goodwill as my first store brand because they are known for their organization. You know how much I love organization! Goodwill sections the clothes by size and by color. Don’t let this fool you though sometimes there are those gems hidden amongst the other sizes just waiting to be found. You’ll definitely want to look through other sizes too, not just your own. There are so many treasures to find, you just have to look and be patient. With that being said let us get to the haul.

Outfits:

The Master’s Championship Tank

When I saw this tank and did a happy dance in Goodwill. I have been golfing since I was little so when I saw the Master’s logo I grabbed it. This tank would have cost so much as a souvenir but I got it for a whole $3. It’s so comfy and a perfect shirt for the summer golf match. Here I paired it with some simple dark denim for an everyday look.

Stoosh Black Blazer

Thrift stores are the perfect place to find business attire. I found this blazer for $3. It’s the perfect business women staple. Who doesn’t love a good color combination? Black, white, and light brown go so well together on this shirt. It is the perfect length to wear with leggings to work or even some dark denim jeans. Here I styled it with some simple black leggings and white Vans to complete the color balance. I scored this top for only $3!

Another fully thrifted outfit besides the shoes. The zip-up is THE comfiest top I have ever owned. It’s also thin enough to wear even on the hot summer days. The jeans are the softest ones in my collection of denim. The light wash is a perfect color to pair with anything this spring and summer. I got the zip-up for $3 and the jeans for $6. That’s a whole outfit for $9! I paired both with some suede grey Vans.

St John’s Bay Navy Top, GAP Light Washed Denim Vest, and So Brand White Denim

One of the many favorites that I have thrifted is this outfit right here. The whole outfit is from this Goodwill trip. Everyone needs a pair of staple white denim in their closet. These are so soft, comfy, and fit like a glove. The navy top and denim vest compliment each other so well too. It’s the perfect combination of light and dark together. I scored the top for $3, the vest for $7, and the jeans for $6. That’s another whole outfit for only $16. You normally have to pay that money for one shirt at a mall.

A New Day Yellow Top and Maurices Dark Denim

I really like styling the color that seems to be very on-trend lately, mustard yellow. I found the perfect comfy long sleeve for only $3. The material and color is the reason I fell in love with it. The jeans are that perfect fit everyone looks to find. I have multiple shades of denim and these just added to my collection. They were a total of $6. I styled them both together with some Burks to complete the look.

Banana Republic Cheetah Top and Talbots Grey Denim Jacket

This is another one of my favorite outfits and it’s all thrifted! The cheetah print top pairs so well with the grey denim jacket. The jacket is so comfy and the silver detailing that makes it pop. I finished the look off with the grey suede Vans. This look is perfect for a day out on the town with friends. I got the top for $3 and the jacket for $11.

Express Dark Denim Vest

The outfit is giving me all the fall vibes. Who here loves fall as much as me? This denim vest is perfect to go with all those flannels sitting in your closet. I scored this for $8! I styled it here with some non-thrifted items, a flannel, and simple black leggings with those suede beaded sandals.

Ann Taylor Dark Denim Jacket

Everyone needs that perfect dark denim jacket in their closet. This Ann Taylor jacket was a great find. I love denim. I will always snag a good denim jacket or jeans when I find them. I snagged this baby for $11. That’s a STEAL! Name brand and good quality! Here I styled it with some non-thrifted items: a simple tank top in mustard color, olive green Old Navy dress pants, and simple suede beaded sandals. This look is perfect for work or just a simple day on the town.

Under Armour Bright Pink Active Top

When you find name brands at a thrift store that are also good quality how can you not pass them up? I got a perfect condition Under Armour’s active top for $9. I style it with just about anything from leggings to jeans to sweatpants. This was definitely on the list of the top finds.

Nike Black Active Tank

Snagging all the name brands in the active section. I scored this Nike tank for $6. It’s the original dry-fit material to keep you cool during those hot and sweaty workouts on the track. I have it styled here as a gym to an everyday outfit with black athletic leggings and white Vans.

Grey and Pink Iowa Dance T-Shirt

This is my favorite t-shirt right now. It’s so soft, it’s unreal. I had to have it since it has my two favorite things! Dance and Iowa Hawkeyes! The best part it was only $3. Another find on the top of my list.

Nike USA Olympic Team Active Tank

Another name brand find. A Nike USA Olympic tank. This tank is the perfect combination of comfy and soft. Two qualities you want in a workout shirt. This tank was only $6 at Goodwill. You can even style it with some denim shorts or jeans for an everyday look.

Under Armour Grey and Pink T-shirt

Last on this thrift haul is another name brand top. This simple Underarmour t-shirt has the dry fit material also but adds a splash of color with the bright pink. This would be perfect for the gym or for an everyday outfit too with some jeans. This t-shirt was only $6 to top it all off.

Tell us a little bit about the design you used for your Vans Customs! What was the inspiration behind it? I knew I wanted to make either a very loud shoe or a very quiet shoe. I played with two main designs and this is the one that I was most happy with. I used imagery from a recent painting that was a little bit about living in and moving through the kaleidescopic landscape of LA, growing up in California, and climbing the weird, vibrant mountain of life. If you look close you can see tiny figures walking up those radiating hills. I like the idea of footwear for climbing psychedelic mountains, both holy and unholy, with mustard fields and ketchup accents.

What are your favorite Vans silhouettes? Since I was a kid, I’ve just liked Vans. I don't think there's a silhouette I don't like. I had a pair of slip ons in elementary school that I treasured. We couldn’t afford brand name shoes back then, but my Mom found them on sale one summer. I was so happy. I grew up in a half Japanese-American household and the rules were strictly shoes-off indoors, but I would clean the soles every time I came home so I could wear them inside. I wore them way past when I should have. Not only were they eventually ground down from too much life and love, my feet grew too big too fast and I tried to stuff them in there as long as I could. The Vans I wear most these days are a pair of velcro canvas Prison Issue low tops that I’ve had for years, but I think the classic Sk8-Hi’s are maybe my favorites. They're beautiful objects.

What would you title your shoe? Ascension

What have been some of your favorite reactions you’ve gotten on social media or by friends? People from every walk of life seem very stoked on yellow shoes, which is a bit of a surprise. My favorite reaction so far came when I was carrying them down the street in my neighborhood and a stylish elderly woman, a total stranger, demanded that I give her a closer look at these shoes. I told her the situation, and I’m not sure she understood, but she departed saying, “I want to wear those shoes.”

What was your favorite part about the Vans Custom shop process? Getting down to refining process. Once things were narrowed down it was really fun to play with the slight variations in those final options. It was difficult to choose but interesting to see how much the overall feel of the shoe can be changed by seemingly minor differences in color and design features.

East Woodborough Public High School, Monday morning, the light smacking in yellow sunspots from the glazing. Throb of engines and the bass, ticking of bicycle wheels, the clap and rattle of skateboards - a cacophony. Washed out sky dyed in a blue that is turning white with heat, rubber soles picking up the dust from the concrete. Everywhere bodies turning humid inside of shirts and shorts, faces pinking. The clarion of girls laughing all ha-ha-tee-hee. Girls. Not misses. Girls who walk with their shoulders first, slouching jeans and gemmy eyes, self conscious of acne and braces. Girls with biro down the backs of their hands, boys with trouser hems trodden into soft runnels of thread, boys with secret tattoos.

Children.

Heero wades through them, a small Gulliver encroaching into Lilliput. An old man in a skinny boy body.

He finds breathing space and shade beneath straggling trees on scratchy grass, occupied already by children scribbling final answers to last weeks homework, and stray cigarette butts.

He’d expected more similarity to the other schools. There’s next to none. Kids run here and talk loud, smack their gum, turn up in clothes pulled from bedroom floors. No uniforms. No stables. No fencing. No hush and wood polish.

Heero feels his own anonymity more acutely than he ever has. A good thing, for the mission.

Two girls clapping, singing nonsense, or talking. “No! No!” one says to her friend, signalling with the rest of her body, “Yes, say more!”

Heero has a pen and ten dollars in his pocket, but he should have brought a backpack. It would blend more. It’s part of the uniform, he realises. The uniform that isn’t a uniform. The other of the clapping girls looks back, and then drops a whisper into her friend's ear and they peal away into the chaos.

Laughing at him?

Doesn’t matter. It’s not relevant to the mission, and they’re not potential targets. Heero doesn’t need to know anything about them to know that. They’re too ordinary. Ordinary is safe.

Safe enough. The school is a big white block of a building, Heero blinks and it’s rubble. Blink. Box. Blink. Roar of children’s voices.

Blink.

“The fuck?” someone says. A flash of another face, like all the others. Incredulous at the concept of Heero Yuy.

Heero realises he’s scowling like fury.

Twenty minutes till first bell.

Detaching himself from the trees, he drives himself away towards the back of the school. Time now to focus. Establish territory.

Heero breathes in the dry clay of the earth. Time to choose a sport.

It’s a powder blue convertible with that new car smell, as though Santa baby only just dropped it off. It must have been in the garage for several years though, brand new even whilst ageing.

Quatre dismisses Ahmed’s suggestion of an escort, and puts the hood down. It’s a speed control zone, but even a sedate thirty miles per hour creates soft fingers of air that ruffle over his scalp. Sunglasses, chinos, understated but overpriced watch, Quatre supposes he’ll make the appropriate splash when he arrives. First port of call, student services, of course, to make his introduction to the Dean.

And then in turn, Quatre presumes to be introduced to the other high school royalty. Or perhaps they will simply magnetise themselves to his presence, like lions aware of a newcomer prowling into their territory.

Not that he intends to be threatening.

The big houses and lawns give way to smaller lots with bigger roads and untidier kerbs.

‘Why wouldn’t I be at private school?’ Quatre wonders of his character. ‘Money? Character?’ It’s a very nice car. Quatre resolves on personality; a rags-to-riches, Grand-daddy’s alma mater reasoning.

A naif desire for reality and diversity. Get a little taste of the other half before the inevitable route to the board room.

“And in that case,” Quatre says to himself, wheeling the sports car into the parking lot, “I won’t even need to act.”

Town planning guidance states that, as the ideal, each household should be within a 500m walk of a bus stop. Wufei has to trudge more than twice that to the main road. A bus the colour of old mustard and half empty.

Wufei takes a seat near the back. Perches really, thinking of gum concealing on the underside. The outskirts slip drearily past the window, strip mall, gas station, drive-thru, then another. The fat man at the wheel meets Wufei’s eye briefly through the rear-view, but with only a bovine attention. He’s been doing this for too long to care one way or another. All he wants is for the kids to sit down and keep their hands and their drinks to themselves.

Tilting his head, as they groan between stops, Wufei finds a spider in the corner of the window, which oscillates into a blur in its web whenever the driver squishes a foot on the accelerator. ‘Go faster, or let me off?’ Wufei muses.

It’s the most relatable thing he’s seen in days.

The bus lurches to a halt, rear skewed into the nearside lane, and more kids tramp aboard, already looking travel worn. Cups clutched in bare hands, books and bags.

“Hey, pay!” the driver yells at one kid. He turns on a heel and flicks -ping! klink! - a dollar fifty in coins into the slot. The driver snorts.

“Eat it,” says the kid, backing down the aisle, middle fingers raised. Cock of the rock. Wufei rolls his eyes. Wonders what it is about the light spectrum that makes neon looks so dead in the daylight.

“Move.”

There’s a tussle and a kid is evicted from the seat opposite Wufei. He goes stumbling up the bus, with the surprised offence of a person hit in the face by an errant bluebottle, and then drops into a new seat. Boots bridge the aisle, thumping onto Wufei’s seat and making the springs bounce.

“What?” Duo challenges.

Wufei, finger and thumb, pulls the edge of his jacket out from under Duo’s heel and scoots over.

“Nerd.”

The glint of a shark’s grin in the corner of his eye. Wufei lets his body go reptilian. ‘Don’t overdo it,’ he warns with his silence. ‘Don’t push me,’

Pop of bubblegum, bleep of a game. Pure theatrics. Wufei stares at the spider hanging onto its threads.

It’s going to be a long day.

Trowa changes in a classroom, and returns to the roof to watch the sun rise. He watches staff arrive over the course of an hour, in ones and twos. None of them think to look up. Mostly they look at their shoes.

Then the before-school kids arrive. Parents with morning meetings, the sports kids, the band kids, and kids with reasons that Trowa can’t discern from twenty metres above.

Then the mob. Spooling from buses, the whole hive-like mass of students erupting from the surrounding roads. So many it’s hard to pick out individuals, though he sees Quatre sweep in, shining and spotless. He evokes a bubble through the crowd as he passes through it. People gape and then cling to his wake, taking it all in. As he climbs the steps of the school, Trowa gets a glimpse of sunshine redolent on golden hair, and a smile before Quatre vanishes.

He crowds down a little lower, and trusts no one else will bother looking up.

Duo births himself out the window of a bus not a few moments later, brash and obvious. A distraction that nearly makes him miss Wufei slinking off, having disembarked in a more orthodox manner. Duo stands and scans the building and then mooches away in the opposite direction, towards the bleachers.

Sensible.

He doesn’t spot Heero, but then Heero is always aware of his angles. He wouldn’t expose himself to surveillance like that. Trowa watches the other kids instead.The lonely ones, the bold ones.They make for a curious study. Height simplifies them and their behaviours. He can compare them to cattle, or ants, or apes, but knows that once among them, it won’t be the case at all.

‘Bias,’ Trowa thinks, leaning back from the edge. Under his feet, a bell is chirring. Warning bell. It sounds more suited to a military application than anything as homely as a school. Trowa arranges his face into something nondescript and his body into a slouch. Touch of gangling disorganisation in the limbs, dragging feet. He descends into the school, and takes turns following small groups of children, adding characteristics to Sven until Sven is more alive than conjecture.

When the bell rings again, Trowa mutely holds his note over the desk to the school secretary. “I got lost,” he says.

“First day,” she replies, thrusting spectacles onto her nose and reducing him at once to paperwork. “Right, let’s see where we’re putting you, shall we?”
