The Queens Platinum Jubilee in London - The Malle founders had the real honour of paying a small tribute to her Majesty the Queen, as the country thanked her for her dedication and service over 70 years, by riding in the Queens Jubilee Pageant, as part of the Jubilee celebrations. 50 riders from across the country were invited to ride notable vintage motorcycles from 1950-1960, all from the first decade since the Queens coronation. Jonny rode a 1958 BSA Super Rocket, Robert on his 1957 Triumph Thunderbird and they were joined by long time Malle collaborator and close friend Calum of deBolex on his 1951 Vincent Black Shadow! On the brisk ride into London to Buckingham Palace it was a challenge to keep up with The Vincent… but in the Jubilee Pageant itself, with an average speed of 2.6mph…on 70 year old motorcycles that are designed to go very fast... it was a different challenge altogether! Trying not to overheat, stall, catch fire… or breakdown in front of 200,000 onlookers that lined the Mall with another 17m viewers watching from home. As an additional Malle tribute to the Queens Jubilee and to the era of the Rockers - with a touch of ‘Pomp & Pageantry’ - we found the very first Malle leather jacket we ever made and painted it up in White & Gold for the occasion. Hand painted for the ’57 Thunderbird, which also rode in the Jubilee ride 10 years ago. On that Sunday, 50 vintage motorcycles started, 39 made it over the start line and 29 made it back to Horse Guards Parade after the Pageant ride. The camaraderie was amazing and it really was great fun and an honour to be apart of. It’s amazing what you can find behind remote rural garage doors - wandering around the villages North of LA last week and came across a little sign saying ‘motorcycles this way’. In a small room was a completely unique collection, including (in the words of the owner) “the meanest pre-1950 custom motorcycle you will ever see” - The Vincent 'Black Lightening’ - mean!
