A Brief History of Album Covers, 2017. The Who “The Who Sell Out” [1968] Demonstrating how album art can work on a number of different levels, #thewhosellout was recorded and released at a time when the group actually were appearing in radio jingles advertising various consumer products. The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Rock [NEW 1978 Edition] - The Who (con’t) Their 1967 album release, The Who Sell Out, saw them treading water. Again, it demonstrated #petetownshend ‘s predilection for doing something more ambitious than the mere ordinary album form, and the songs on #thewhosellout we’re linked by jingles from the various offshore pirate radio stations which had been outlawed by the British Parliament from August 1967.
