The bright light of the morning sun broke in the stained-glass of the multicolored window panes, golden rays of sunlight fell through the mosaic of individual pieces of glass carefully colored and assembled into a work of art, casting blurred copies on the gleaming dark wood floor of the throne room and on the high walls opposite you, distorted, discolored, darkened-and yet beautiful.

Even if the stained-glass windows robbed the room of almost all natural light, the colors of the rainbow constantly dancing around made the room very special. A story had been carved into each of the windows, a memory of the past retold each day, and you liked nothing better than to listen to the wandering sun on the horizon tell these tales.

Even now the room began to fill with the rising sun in bright colors, a sea of lights of red, green, blue, yellow, pink splashes of color danced across the stone walls of security and you saw the reflections of a kneeling man with brown curly hair, above whose head floated a golden crown to your right, the same man a little older with a drawn sword in his hand to your left, and right before your eyes in the center of the room the dawn cast a blurry circle of blooming roses on the floor, but your favorite detail, two interlocking rings, the inspiration of which was on your right ring finger, was not to be seen.

It was impossible for the light to reach every spot except that one. Instead of the rings, you saw only darkness, a soul so black that it must have never been touched by the warmth of light in its life. It was a stain of the void, of infinite emptiness, far from the joy of life that it tore away from everyone else.

In no encounter with Dream had you felt even remotely comfortable, each time it was as if just the sight of the cold smile of the mask that hid his face from the sun took away all joy, and the flame of your warm heart flickered under the empty gaze of the two black painted dots. You could not understand why a man with a name that stood for fantasies about something very aspirational destroyed everything that had been a cherished desire for others.

You were not surprised that he made the impossible possible like the absence of light in a room full of windows.

He had never shown his face in your castle, not since he had made Eret king and placed on him a crown studded with blood gems, which Eret had been trying to redeem since that day. And now he was back, had sauntered into the castle relaxed as if there wasn't a war brewing on the horizon, and was now arguing with the man on the golden throne next to yours about breaking a promise Eret had sworn on the day of his coronation.

"I don't want to tell you what to do, quite the opposite," Dream's voice pulled you from your thoughts, and your gaze, roving over colors, landed again on the man in shining purple armor in the center of the room, black, dark, haunting. "I want you to do nothing."

"Nothing at all?" repeated Eret incredulously, and your eyebrows shot up questioningly as well. Alarm bells rang in your head, had you irritated that you hadn't listened before.

First, he used Eret to betray L'Manburg and everything it stood for for a crown, and now he demanded your partner to silently watch Manburg and Pogtopia going at each other's throats?

"Manburg and Pogtopia are not part of the DreamSMP, they are outsiders and do not fall under your ruling hand," Dream continued matter-of-factly, but with a hint of malice in his calm, razor-sharp voice. "You are the king, Eret, king of the DreamSMP. Let them settle this conflict, work it out amongst themselves and hopefully" He laughed gleefully at the thought of war and you wondered if it was all just an expulsion for him against boredom, "Hopefully neither exists after this and there's more land for you."

A shiver ran down your spine as Dream relaxed, beating his hands against the metal of his armor. Muffled, the click of his nails on the netherite echoed through the silent room, a simple gesture in which you could only hear the clashing of swords that would meet in a few hours when Pogtopia would take one last shot at freedom from the shadows.

Eret found his words again first, "So you want them to destroy each other and then profit from their leftovers?"

"When you put it that way, yes. Not for long, there will be no L'Manburg, Manburg or Pogtopia; only DreamSMP as far as the eye can see and much further. You will no longer be the king of a small part, but of a powerful and further expanding empire."

Eret's hand, which you had grasped upon Dream's entrance and refused to let go of, tensed in yours, quivering with rage. You could see him glaring at Dream from behind the protective black lenses of his glasses, could feel how much he despised the man, and how much he resisted following this brazen instruction.

Dream took a step forward, his hand now clasping the sword at his side in an unspoken threat, though Eret didn't even flinch under it.

"How can you be so sure it's going to end like this?" you now raised your voice as well, and Dream chuckled low. It made you all the angrier. "You talk about the future as if you've already seen it, talk about human lives as if they're nothing more than a chess move. What makes you so sure we're going to sit here and do nothing while our friends fight for their lives on our doorstep?"

"You are not vengeful, you don't hold grudges. You would never interfere in a war that is not yours because you are neutral. All you do is sit there, represent the SMP and look pretty."

For the fact that Dream was talking about neutrality, you just had a great desire to punch him in the face. He was talking about a war, a war where kids like Tommy were on the front lines fighting for something that was rightfully theirs - something Dream had taken away from them.

A reddish shadow fell on Dream, coloring him the color of the blood that would flow today because of the consequences of his boredom, and putting his devilish side on display. No sane person would ask a king not to fight for his people, to fight with his people. But Dream was pure evil, a nightmare from whom parents warned their children and in whose veins flowed malice, while in his words and deeds lay poison.

"You're wrong about that, Dream," Eret spat out his name as if even the mention of it left a bitter taste in his mouth. "You're wrong about that." A squeeze of his hand was enough for you to trust him completely, even if the click click click of Dream's hand on his sword intimidated you slightly, he was still clearly superior to both of you in his PvP skills and neither of you wore armor like he did. But Eret was with you, it would work out somehow.

"If you think your threats will keep us from standing with our friends, you are sorely mistaken. I'm asking you to leave now."

It was not a request, not a question.

For the first time, Dream's hitherto relaxed, reclined posture changed and the grip on his sword tightened, even the expression on his mask seemed to harden. "Don't be stupid, Eret," he spoke quietly, but the threat echoed loudly in your ears. Shadows of the colored windows contorted grimaces on his mask, showing his true face in all its ugliness. "I," he began and his voice grew louder, more determined, "I have made you king, I have put your crown on you and given you your power. I'll give you one more chance, stay out of this war and nothing will happen to you, you will keep your power. However, if you step out and pick up a sword, I can't guarantee anything."

You looked from Dream to Eret. While Dream's grimace, illuminated in red, blue, and green slivers of a morning sun whose rising brought the drums of a war rolling over the hills with it, Eret was bathed in gold by the few unbroken rays, his lips pursed sternly. "You can take my crown, my power, and even my own castle from under my feet, but you will never be able to take away who I am and what I stand for."

His hand squeezed yours tighter, and he turned his head slightly toward you. The corners of his mouth twitched upward in a smile of encouragement.

"No matter what happens, whether I keep my crown or not, it will be alright, I promise," he said without even responding to Dream's angry snort.

Then Dream fell back two steps and one shadow became three. How you could have overlooked Punz and George waiting in the dark entrances was a mystery to you, but you didn't have much time to fret over your perhaps fatal mistake. Punz had drawn his netherite sword, the blond assassin was calmly waiting for an order from Dream and even if George looked a little lost in it, you couldn't underestimate him.

Eret's grip tightened, behind his spectacle lenses his white pupils flickered analyzing over the three intruders so that he could set himself up for anything as quickly as possible. All three wore glittering enchanted armor, holding swords sharpened for war in one hand and shields bearing the black and red crest of Manburg. They looked ready, both for war and for what was about to come.

"What's going on here?" asked George, and you had to swallow a bitter laugh. Hadn't the brunette been paying attention when Dream had threatened you?

"Well," Dream unsheathed his sword, deliberately dropping it to the floor where it cut a straight crack in the dark wood. "Our dear royal couple decided to help Pogtopia, a shame if you ask me; they looked so beautiful on that throne"

"Looked?" you echoed, suddenly a lump had formed in your throat, making the word sound much more like a croak than a mocking repeat.

"You want to get rid of us just because we disobey you?" asked Eret.

The man in green, purple and red laughed out from behind his mask. "What is the point of being represented if they don't do what I say?"

"Then why aren't you on the throne yourself?" your voice still resonated, with every breath you thought it might be your last, with how close Dream had come to you. Like a predatory cat, he had crept up, his sword dragging menacingly across the floor that his blade left a scratch.

"Me? No," he laughed again, just a few steps away from you, and just as he raised his sword and you thought now it was over, he spun around again. Your eyelids fluttered shut and you let out a shaky breath. You followed the tip of Dream's sword, startled and at the same time incredulous to see who it had landed on.

"George will be the new king"

No matter how much you had pulled yourself together so far, at the announcement and direct coronation Eret had to hold you pressed to his chest so that you didn't jump forward and tear George's crown, Eret's crown, off his head again. You had screamed, kicked and spat, had thrown all sorts of insults at Dream and tried to tear yourself away from Eret.

Wrapping his strong arms around your middle, he had to pretty much carry you out of the throne room, so many times you turned back around and yelled at the three goofing around men about how much they would regret it.

Your last look at the throne room and its beautiful windows was painful, in a haze of glowing hot tears you had to watch the first stone fall through the middle window, after which you slumped exhausted against Eret. The clang echoed in your ears, the shards pattering down the castle wall like rain. You would never be able to forget that sound, nor the sight of Dream's mask in the blazing red colors of hell.

"Hey hey," Eret tried to reach out to you, as over the last few steps you had barely resisted. "Don't turn off now! We need to get to Pogtopia and help them, you saw how equipped Manburg is" His hands held you by your shoulders and shook you gently.

"Does anything ever turn out alright in this place?" you whispered, emphasizing every word with hatred towards those who thought they needed to destroy everything. Your gaze hung back to the castle where you had laid the foundations and from which you were thrown out within minutes without a chance to say goodbye.

Eret's hands turned so that you had to look away from your home and instead had him in front of you. When Dream had ripped the crown off Eret's head, his glasses had also fallen and shattered, much like the window panes. More shards, more misery. "We will my love, we will turn out alright. If we stay together we don't need a castle or a crown, that I will promise you," he spoke to you urgently. His hands went over your tense shoulders to your neck, up to your head, which he gently embraced.

Although he had just lost everything, Eret smiled. "The title of rulers didn't' t define us, we are still the same people with the same goals, the same feelings, the same souls. They may take our home, but they can't take our hearts, alright? Now come on, we have to help our friends!"
