so am i right or am i right in my assertion that bridgerton doesn't actually do character work, it just rebrands it's main characters before their season begins and tries to recontextualize them as poor little meow meows.
#olive rambles#watched the first half of season 3#was thinking to myself: huh. pen isn't that bad.#and then decided to rewatch some season 2 scenes to recontextualize who the characters are. y'know. so i can be an intelligent viewer#and all that jazz.#and damn you bridgerton i fell for your trap for a second there.#SHE'S NOT !!!!!!! THE SAME !!!!!!!! CHARACTER !!!!!!!!!#this isn't just about framing a narrative differently season 2 pen and season 3 pen are different girlies entirely#WHERE IS THE WRATH#i *want* a vengeful penelope featherington damnit#even if i don't like her as a person i could respect her as a character#and yet#they just make her a soft sadgirl#which also feels very cheap because women can be angry and messy and vengeful and still find love#honestly get polin out of here and get penelope angry again#i want to see BLOOD or season 2 is cheapened in retrospect#look me in the eye and tell me i'm wrong#you can't#i am the god of this chilis and i have spoken#i think over the summer i'm going to watch all of bridgerton over again so i can make a corkboard of theories#and be intelligent in my hate#PENELOPE WAS ANGRY AND LOUD ABOUT IT IN SEASON 2 AND SOMEHOW SHE IS NOW JUST SAD AND RUMINATING IN SEASON 3#BITCH WHEN AND WHERE DID THIS CHANGE TAKE PLACE AND WHY#AND ALSO FOR WHAT ANGRY ACTIONABLE CHARACTERS ARE DYNAMIC AND HARD TO PREDICT AND MAKE FOR GOOD CINEMA#SAD CHARACTERS THAT SIT AND THINK ABOUT THINGS ARE OKAY TOO BUT THEY ARE NOT !!!!! Sadgirl(Kit walker x reader) Part 1
Tumblr media
description- Y/n find herself in love with her childhood bestfriend but little does she know that he has a wife.
Y/n pov:
I smiled as I put on the best designer dress and heels before styling my hair nicely before stepping out and I walked down to the diner and I smiled as I bought food "So how is your crush on Mr walker going?"Ann asked "It's kind of confusing"I said I smiled before grabbing the bag of food and thank ann before leaving the diner
I smiled as I parked my car at the gas station and walked up to see kit working on a car I smiled "I see your hard at work Mr walker"I said I smiled as he looked up at me with a grin "Just working doll"Kit said "I brought us food"I said I smiled as kit put his glove down and walked over and pulled out a chair before me I smiled and grabbed the food and sit down and handed him his favorited food
I smiled as I ate the burger "So what have you been up to y/n?"He asked "You know how it is to work in town hall the same old"I said "Yeah that's true"Kit said nodding in agreement I smiled and turn to him "You know they really miss you you should stop by"I said "I will don't worry"Kit said "so hows the asshole costumers been treating you?"I asked "assholes like always"Kit said I chuckled and I hummed while nodding and then hear a car pull up "You should go check up on that"I said "Okay I be back don't go anywhere"Kit said in a teasing voice I let out a soft giggle as he got up and walked to go deal with the costumer
I knew my feelings will only continued to grow for him I smiled as he returned and he sat down "so anything new with you?"I asked "Nope not really it's just the same old what about you did you find the one yet?"Kit asked I laughed and shaked my head "Noo you know how busy I get taking care of the men in the town hall"I said I sighed "It can be a handful"I said "You know I don't like the way they treat you down there y/n"Kit said I smiled and held his hand "You know I won't work there forever it's just until I made my dream become big"I said
Me and Kit grew up with eachother we knew everything about eachother "so you still dreaming of becoming a singer?"He asked I smiled and nodded "I know that I can do it one day"I said I felt him caresse my hand "You be one of a kind singer y/n and I will make sure to go to every one of your shows"Kit said I smiled "That sounds lovely kit"I said I stared at him with a smile
I sometimes wonder what kit feels about me but I am to scared to ask him because I don't want to ruin the friendship we have going on right now sometimes It feels to good to be true that he would ever like someone like me
I sighed as I walked out of the automanic part of the gas station as kit locked up "This is where we part ways"Kit said I let out a soft sigh "Yeah I know but I will see you soon"I said "You better"Kit said I smiled before walking to my car and I got in before driving back to my house and I got out of the car
I feel like I should just go over to Kit's place and explain to him how I feel about him to finally get it off my chest With that I left my house and drive to kit's place and got out of my car and knocked on the door and kit answear the door
"Y/n?"Kit asked "Hey I need to talk to you"I said
To be continued

Ooooo! That makes sense! (It's actually 7:36pm for me right now btw)
I figured it was somewhere on one of the coasts. It had that vibe.
Also, about Boston having a strong recovery and punk community is interesting, as someone not from around that area. Urban America in itself is very interesting, though I'm not familiar with it. (I'm from a pretty damn rural area lmao)
Also, completely unrelated, but what other music do you associate with François other than Lana Del Rey?
-Hypermobile François anon
i tend to write what i know as far as settings go which can be a weakness as an author but oh well - i write for fun.
yeah i'm a coastal city girl personally. i lived in a very rural area when i was like, little little so that is part of my upbringing but other than that i'm used to being near concentrated civilization. now i'm stuck in the suburbs and honestly it's kinda worse than living in the middle of nowhere. small towns are nice, but i don't drive anymore because i'm losing my vision + coordination. an urban lifestyle is just more convenient for me.
i also crave novelty so i can't stay in one place for too long. not to sound elitist bc i'm very much working class, but i would strongly encourage you to get out and see larger cities if you can!
in general, i can see fran listening to all sorts of music so it's hard to pinpoint. i don't rly make character playlists bc they can never be exhaustive and i'm a perfectionist. in this au, she is on that artsy sadgirl wave, lana, florence and the machine, etc. but also i see her listening to classical, midcentury french pop/chanson (Françoise Hardy!!!), soft jazz, that kind of stuff. she's probably not a huge fan of arthur's type of music but tolerates some of it.
i'm just waking up so forgive me if my wording seems off. thanks for stopping by again! you must be on/near the east coast yourself then?

|| Bright Future - Adrianne Lenker ||
Genres: Contemporary Folk, Singer-Songwriter, Americana
Tumblr media
REVIEW
I came into this album with high expectations. I've loved contemporary folk music for a long time and the praise this album received made me go into it ready for a good time. I was, unfortunately, disappointed by the albums unwillingness to change its sound and style for the vast majority of tracks.
The simplicity of 'Real House' felt empty to me, especially considering its length. Soft piano notes being the only instrumental contribution to the track was, though initially soothing, very derivative. That being said, Lenker's lyrical prowess and enchanting voice motivated me to keep pushing through the album. 'Sadness As A Gift' is much better than the previous track and has received much critical acclaim, but I'd be lying if I said I loved it. The lyrics are a tad more sentimental than on 'Real House', but the instrumentals are put together much better. Lenker's vocal performances are excellent as well and deeply enjoyable. Unfortunately this just isn't catchy, lyrically or melodically.
'Fool' has, and I don't say this lightly, brilliant guitars. The song is obviously on the album to move it forward, and it does its job excellently with its dreamy production and short runtime. A real standout. I did not enjoy 'No Machine' as much. The Lenker that experiments and breaks away from traditional songwriting is much more attention grabbing than the one on 'No Machine' and 'Sadness As A Gift'. Although I was largely negative toward 'Real House', I commend its innovation.
By 'Free Treasure', I'd gotten bored of the repetitive and dragging of the album. 'Free Treasure' in particular has backing vocals which definitely take away from the song, I'd much rather Lenker sing on her own. Other than that there isn't much noteworthy about the song.
On 'Vampire Empire', Lenker once again benefits from taking risks. The poor quality of audio adds charm and the inclusion of a greater instrumental range really boosts the memorability of the track. Undoubtedly one of my favorites on the album. The strumming pattern of the guitar was also a welcome change of pace from the majority of the LP. Quickly abandoning uniqueness, we're pushed onto the sappy and mawkish 'Evol', which treads ground covered by so many before. A Violin and piano accompany Lenker on this dull, sentimental track which I did not enjoy one bit.
'Candleflame' is definitely the weakest track lyrically, luckily it's very brief. I wont say much about it, as it has the same issues as the rest of the album. The next track, 'Already Lost', has the same sound quality as 'Vampire Empire', the charm of which does wonders for the track. This is much catchier, though. I like this one a lot.
The short and boring 'Cell Phone Says' is hardly worth mentioning, it only serves to drag the album out longer. The same could be said about 'Donut Seam', except I like this one quite a bit more due to it's more praiseworthy lyrics.
Maybe it's just because I don't get it, but by the end of 'Ruined' I just failed to understand most of the praise this album received. It didn't make me feel sad, it sounded surprisingly overproduced for an album with so little involved in it and I thought the lyrics were fine at worst and good at best. Lenker shines on her experimental side, not the sadgirl music that makes up most of the album. The highlights are very good, but few and far between. I won't be revisiting this album as a whole anytime soon, but 'Fool' still goes hard.
FINAL SCORE: 63/100

Backpack Playlist 5/27/19
I no longer have a radio show so this is where I’m gonna be posting my thoughts and playlists! Have fun, who cares. Apple Music/Spotify links at the bottom. Enjoy.
“Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” - Kate Bush, Hounds of Love (1985, EMI)
A gay icon, not much to say beyond that. We love some extra as shit background vocals.
“Bags” - Clairo, Immunity (2019, Fader)
First single off Clairo’s new LP coming out at some point this year. Literally all I can think when I hear the guitar line in this song is Avril Lavigne, and I say that with the utmost respect and love. Big ups to VW alum Rostam for the production on this track and Danielle Haim for drums - does this mean Clairo is now part of the PC Music squad AND the VW-adjacent rap/indie rock squad??? Her career is definitely pretty strange so far, but I’m hype to see her blow up beyond the world of the Youtube algorithm chewing up and spitting out DIY music videos. This track is also kinda full circle for her - in her big Pitchfork feature last year, she talked about being starstruck after seeing one of the Haim sisters on a plane listening to SOPHIE, and now she’s got one of them on a track. We love growth.
“Kisses 2 My Phone” - Sega Bodega, self*care - EP (2018, NUXXE)
Lona (aka MANIIK aka BABY GAMELAN) shared this EP with me last year, and it’s been rattling around in my head ever since. Some glitchy trap beats and subtly depressing lyrics about sending kisses to your phone and losing love. Scottish experimental pop kid who gets in your ears and won’t leave.
“Even the Shadow” - Porches, Pool (2016, Domino)
A classic, both Pool and their newer album The House (2018, Domino) remind me of a very specific time in my life when I was spending 12 hours in the photo studio every other weeknight and played Porches on shuffle to get through it. Very sad stoner synthy alt-pop for gay kids with lots of insecurity but dreams of 2014 soft pale tumblr aesthetic escapism!!
“Hatin” - Rico Nasty & Kenny Beats, Anger Management (2019, Sugar Trap)
Remember when Rico was just a Soundcloud kid with a stellar remix of “The Race” under her belt?? When I first heard that track in the background of a friend from high school’s Instagram story, I literally dropped my phone trying to lyric search it to see who sang it. Big ups to Lafayette (a newly minted Howard University grad :,) ) for putting me on. Rico’s always been bffs with Kenny, so this collab record isn’t surprising, but I didn’t expect it to be this good!!! Very excited to see her blowing up on Tik Tok rn, maybe she’ll finally get what she’s owed. And she deserves more than just a 2 second cameo in the Old Town Road music video………
“Dig” - Lance Bangs, Lance Mountain - EP (2016, Citrus City)
Reminds me of screamy jangly indie rock from the summer after my first year when I lived in a commune and got a stick and poke from a friend who was three mojitos deep. Also, Citrus City is awesome and we love to support VA labels!!
“Livin’ On a Prayer” - Bon Jovi, Slippery When Wet (1986, Vertigo)
Mostly putting this on here because it’s the ending soundtrack to a great little animated short film I watched recently called WORK (2009) by Michael Rianda. It’s a super 2009 short, but it’s fascinating because it feels like the aesthetic halfway point between Don Hertzfeldt’s Rejected (2000) and Bojack Horseman (2014-) style absurdity. It’s not the subtlest anti-capitalist cartoon out there, but it’s very cute and funny.
“20 Ghosts III” - Nine Inch Nails, Ghosts I-IV (2008, The Null Corporation)
Put this back to back with Bon Jovi because the weird guitar/vocal growls sound like the “Livin’ On a Prayer” digital doo-wops put through an insane pedal filter. Heard it for the first time when I was watching Laura Poitras’ documentary Citizenfour (2014) - she used it for the super haunting opening and closing scenes, and I can’t think of any better use for Trent Reznor’s sad garage dad phase guitar music.
“Guap” - Yaeji, Yaeji EP (2016, GODMODE)
No introduction necessary, hopefully. Gives me third year queer party vibes, and if you know what that means, congratulations. You’re part of an in-group now. Listen when you need subtle hype up music.
“Indica” - Dizzy Fae, Free Form Mixtape (2018, self-released)
When I showed a friend a picture of Dizzy Fae, their first response was that she’s probably from Amsterdam or Berlin or something and floats between secret clubs all week long before performing herself. She’s actually from Minnesota and is way younger than either of us assumed, so big ups to her for projecting the coolest vibes imaginable. Her vocal distortion is a little FKA Twigs, but she knows how to fuckin rap on the rest of the EP. Well worth a full listen.
“Flower Moon (feat. Steve Lacy)” - Vampire Weekend, Father of the Bride (2019, Columbia)
Best track on this new album, imo, but I can’t stop thinking about Vampire Weekend for a completely different reason. When this album came out, literally everyone was making fun of it for sounding like a Paul Simon redux. A lot of people praised it for the exact same reason lol. But Paul Simon’s relationship with cultural appropriation is a lot like Ezra Koenig’s, and not enough people have made that connection. Remember when Paul Simon broke the cultural boycott with Apartheid-era South Africa to make Graceland (1986)?? Everyone shit all over him for not only straight up taking South African music styles and centering himself in their vocal story, but doing it all in the midst of the largest cultural boycott in modern history. It’s a good album, I won’t pretend it’s not, but it’s deeply problematic and disappointed a lot of people who expected something better from a guy who knew what he was doing. Reminds me of 2008-2012 Vampire Weekend!! Anyway, listen to this track for Steve Lacy, if nothing else.
“Ur Phone” - boy pablo, Roy Pablo - EP (2017, self-released)
Another Youtube algorithm kid, boy pablo was in everyone’s feeds because this EP is the perfect summery shimmery gaze-y indie rock. His newer album is a little more uptempo than I personally like, but this track is *chef’s kiss*
“Can the Circle Be Unbroken” - The Carter Family, Can the Circle Be Unbroken: Country Music’s First Family (2000, Sony; original recording 1935)
Really not trying to wade into the country music discourse today, but this track is genuinely full of intense longing and sadness in a way that so clearly changed country/rock music and its relationship to the guitar.
“Before the World Was Big” - girlpool, Before the World Was Big (2015, Wichita)
Their new stuff fucking slaps, and seeing them come to terms with their gender identities is fucking beautiful!! But I always come back to these weird ass nursery rhymes. It’s literally just their harmonies and two guitars, and legend has it if you turn this up to full volume in your car and drive through your hometown, your unrequited high school crush will appear with their spouse and two kids just to rub it in.
“Vroom Vroom” - Charli XCX, Vroom Vroom - EP (2016, Vroom Vroom Recordings)
I mean. It’s Charli’s early work with SOPHIE, you’ve gotta just blast this shit and ruin someone’s life. The return to queer hyper pop over the past few years is the only thing sustaining my fucking mental health.
“Xternal Locus” - Chynna & Oklou, Single (2018, self-released)
Another track Lona played for me after I picked her up from work in DC. Lowkey enough to ***** to, highkey enough to **** to ;)
“Cinema” - Kero Kero Bonito, Totep - EP (2018, self-released)
KKB really did an about face with this record, but I still fucking love them. It’s still sunny and glittery pop, but with a chilled-out vibe. Their intense pop records are like the come up, and this is the chill smoke sesh the day after. Just vibey enough to let you chill out and kick back, but keeps you on your toes with some unexpected samples and glitchy moments.
“Jack the Ripper” - SadGirl, Breakfast for 2 - Single (2018, Suicide Squeeze)
We love surf rock, and that’s all I’m gonna say for this. You either vibe with it you’re bored as shit.
“watch you sleep.” - girl in red, Single (2019, self-released)
Music To Sleep To.

( DOVE CAMERON ) Allow me to introduce Her Highness WILHELMINA HOHENZOLLERN, the TWENTY-TWO year old CROWN PRINCESS of PRUSSIA! Rumors about court say they’re SCHEMING and BOLD, but the rumors always forget to include they’re also ADAPTABLE and DEPENDABLE.
before i start, here’s my girl’s pinterest board bc i’m a huge pinterest ho xoxo
it’s important to note, mina isn’t the original crown heir to the prussian throne. she had an older brother named friedrich ( or as many knew him, fritz. ) he was three years older than her; if he were alive he would be twenty-five --- fritz was twenty-three when he died, meaning mina was twenty when she went from heir presumptive to heir apparent
although she was/is sad ab the passing of her brother, and rightfully worried ab her new responsibilities as crown princess, she can’t deny she’s also excited for whatever the future brings. she’s known mostly war and death throughout her life, and she’s hopeful that things will get better --- she has to be. faith and her devotion to her kingdom are like?? the only things keeping her together lmao
she’s soft but dangerous™ and i can respect that tbh. can and will scheme up plans if need be, and at this point she’s sorta just. if she can’t get what she wants by being docile and patient, she’s gonna get it another way even if that means throwing every etiquette lesson out the window
with her parents looking at marriages to secure for her, mina is.... apprehensive. she knows it’s inevitable and she’s gotta do it no matter how she personally feels ab it, however that doesn’t change the fact she wishes she had a say in it ( bc clearly she has None )
all she wants is for her impending marriage to not mean impending doom, you feel me
also lowkey a hopeless romantic but would rather die than actually admit that jghbfdhjikjfnhdjk
honestly i guarantee her parents are Mortified whenever wilhelmina speaks out against anything bc??? that is not what they taught her to do??? but also if fritz stood his ground, they would be proud so it’s like talk ab double standard and in mina’s mind, they need to get used to it happening now and then bc... how she gonna rule anyone if she has to constantly hold her tongue/if she doesn’t have a backbone?? HM. real q’s
like the majority of prussia, wilhelmina is a practicing protestant
regardless of any conflicting opinions that may rise, mina rly does love her parents a lot and wants to make them proud bc :(( she knows she wasn’t meant for this but she’s TRYING and that’s what matters xx
despite the pretty pink theme, she is lowkey a sadgirl. she internalizes a lot of it bc there’s not really anyone to tell things to ( maybe a lady in waiting wc,,,, but,,, otherwise probably that’s it lol ) she’s literally *internal screaming* and acts like everything is a-okay!!! because what happens if she isn’t okay??? she doesn’t want to find out!!
big advocate of flower gardens, will spend hours if she can in one and just enjoy nature kgfhndskj
speaks quite a few languages, plays a couple instruments --- well-rounded in that aspect, for sure. her fave thing is to act like she doesn’t know a language and see if people talk ab her and if they do, she’ll answer back just to see their reactions
ummmmm she’s a pisces and that says a lot i think
idk what else to write i need to get ready for work but <333 pls hmu or smthin i promise i don’t bite :’)

Gundam again but this time Ple Two with the Qubeley Mk-II making a cameo. Wanted to do something the polar of my last piece by having a sunny day scene. Was originally going to do Ple or a more casual looking Two but decided on the sadgirl contrast. Unusually for me I knew before I started I wanted the Qubeley in the background though I wasn't sure how much detail I wast going to put into it. This is a difficult piece in terms of setup because I don't depict depth well, have trouble drawing robots, have trouble drawing young girls, have trouble with brightly lit scenes, and just generally sort of suck at art. I also stopped earlier than I might have because it was way later than I realised. You're pretty much assured a pretty tragic sort of life being born a Ple. Ple Two is the one that always comes to mind for me because she was a big part of ZZ, a series that I have a soft spot for. I tried to depict her looking sad or troubled despite being on a lovely grassy field on a nice day. The Qubeley lurks in the background though, assuring she not forget her duty. As an aside the Qubeley is one of my favourite Gundam universe designs because it is just so different. I mean, sure it is the iconic funnel user and I generally can't stand that mechanic but it was okay because Newtypes made those a joke anyway.

MADONNA & SWAE LEE - CRAVE [4.56] In 1995, Madonna released “You’ll See,” and Swae Lee was born. Twenty-four years later...
Katherine St Asaph: I'll leave aside the fact that this is a song where one singer tells another singer nearly one-third their age about how their "cravings get dangerous" and how they "shouldn't play with this," except to note that it is a fact, and not a particularly comfortable one. The less pressing question: Why? Why is Madonna recording Starrah songs with Swae Lee? (I'd ask "why is she recording songs so heavily Auto-Tuned," but I heard her do "Like a Prayer" at Eurovision, so I know why.) Does she think this will get airplay? [4]
Edward Okulicz: Madonna isn't too old to be a sex object. I mean, honestly, she looks like she's in her 40s. More people would do her than would do me. But oh god, she sounds like she has no actual interest in sex and is just going through the motions. The points are because Swae Lee almost, almost, makes me think that he's up for this encounter. That's not the way you'd expect this to go, is it? [3]
Alfred Soto: We know well how her cravings "get dangerous," and maybe Swae does too -- is that why he's recessive, almost frightened for the first time? At any rate, the trap beat on "Crave" allows Madonna to bask in the empathetic powers of that still captivating husk; there's a moment when she elides the sh in "I don't think we should wait for this" for maximum effect. No other vocalist would get away with it. Whether "Crave" storms up the charts we'll see. [6]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: The artificiality of every aspect of this, from Madonna's chopped up and processed vocal performance to the ertatz "Dreamcatcher"-crossed with Ty Dolla $ign guitar&B beat, works to its favor. "Crave" is a song about the uncanny naturalism of desire, the discomfort of the distance between what you want and what you have. It's not entirely successful in its pursuit of that vibe, but Swae Lee's vocal performance, as longing as ever, tips it over into comprehensibility. [6]
Katie Gill: When was the last really good Madonna song? She's been consistently putting out music and yet the last song of hers that I can think of and think "yeah, that was a solid Madonna song" was back in the late 2000s. She's had plenty of years to build up her brand; even her more recent work should still sound undeniably like herself. But this doesn't. It sounds like Halsey or Daya, a song that somebody else passed over and Madonna snapped up at the last second. But bitch, she's Madonna. Why is she not owning her sound? [3]
David Moore: I'm finding it hard to figure out Madonna's game plan with these -- a bunch of generic duets in a grab-bag of trendy styles that sound simultaneously expensive and flimsy. Swae Lee is more game than I'd expect, but they both sound lost in a morass. [4]
Vikram Joseph: Madonna has rarely sounded quite so becalmed or so anonymous as she does here on this sultry, extremely modern pop track; perhaps the heavy autotuning and slick production is a conscious attempt to reflect the impersonality of moving to a new city on the far shores of the Atlantic. The overall effect is kind of reminiscent of Lykke Li's hard shift towards glimmering sadgirl R&B on last year's So Sad, So Sexy, especially when Swae Lee's sleepy-eyed rap drifts in and out like a warm breeze -- much like the song as a whole, it leaves a familiar, soft-focus impression that fades to emptiness in no time at all. [6]
Andy Hutchins: It's sincerely awesome that Madonna is still trying to make sex jams at 60, but a delivery that sounds like Gwen Stefani's pout with two spoonfuls of marbles in her mouth appeals to no demographic I know of. And Swae suggesting his partner "ride me like a wave" after the jarring "ride me like a cruise" from "Sunflower" makes me think that his preferences are as painful as his metaphors -- "Surfboard/Surfboard" was more specific, a decent double entendre, and part of an extended riff that made sense and was playful. "Drunk in Love," instructively, made famous person drunk sex sound indulgent and spontaneous and fun; Madge and Swae sound tired, and their beat sounds cheaper than anything else I've ever heard from Mike Dean. [3]
Ryo Miyauchi: The lonely acoustic-pop is an understated, almost muting sound to pair with someone with a star power like Madonna. Her voice being placed at a remove can likewise scan as an opportunity not taken to really mine from that uncontrollable desire she keeps alluding to in the chorus. But not acting upon impulses here feels like the stronger move, especially because Madonna has shown she can indulge if she feels inclined. She leaves lines with an ellipsis in the chorus, fishing for the other to take the bait. The lack of action is as frustrating as it is tantalizing. [6]
