Would love for them to bring up languages at some point.
Angel: "shit they're speaking French. Smiles! Translate!"
Alastor: "I'm not sure which is more insulting; assuming I can fluently speak and understand French because I'm Creole, or that you think French and French-Creole are the same thing."

the way that diff languages sound r so fascinating they're all different and all so vivid
#russian is like the surface of a feather like it's light but not exactly “soft” but still very delicate#german is . cute ? i think it's adorable . it has a lot of momentum it makes u wanna talk fast and talk a lot#like it's squishy . sleek surface w a soft inside#thai is like song . it's like interprative dance or maybe a trust-fall . everything follows from the previous thing#it feels like a little fairy flying up and letting itself fall and flying up again and so on (for fun). its so beautiful but also playful#mandarin chinese is like . idk why but it gives me the same vibe the concept of Observation does . like to read and to see and absorb#and then to translate that into smth else . like . imagine a poet people watching or an artist preparing a canvas w practiced hands. thats#the vibe. soft and elegant and musical but like...in a way that feels lived-in. arabic feels wise ? like music or poetry u read#and feel nothing about then years later u stumble on and it applies to everything in ur life. that kind of vibe. like it knows more than u#and itll make sure ur heart and soul grows as big as its lexicon . polish is like snowflakes falling . it has the feeling of complexity and#elegance but it's also so so light and slippery and...maybe not elusive but the feeling of losing a dance partner in a waltz ? like fun and#light but also an underlying elegance and somberness still . turkish is like the feeling when u get a text from ur crush#and your heart tightens and you cant tell if it's really painful or really amazing . it feels like unrequited love . or a caress#or making out with someone when you know its the last time you'll see them. its beautiful in a yearning longing way#korean is like joking around w ur friends and you've stayed up until like almost 5 AM and youre so delirious that everything is funny#and ur speaking kind of lightly and openly and everything you say holds a lot of weight and doesnt matter at all. you laugh at everything#and youre practically talking in inside jokes and watching the sunrise together . one of them hits u on the shoulder lovingly. ur by a fire#yoruba feels like the metatheory of the matatheory . abstraction until it circles back to intuition or maybe#it feels like plotting the route of a comet or maybe like the soft warm whirr of statistics. trying to verbalise beauty somehow#when you know the best thing you can show it is by telling everyone just look!! look at the sky just look!#anyway yh i think i could do this for every language ever tbh

I wish I actually spoke French. Looking up the text of Le Petit Prince in its original French for the sake of trying to translate a French quote written in phonetics in the English translation of a Japanese novel, and once upon a time I absolutely would have gotten sucked into translating the whole book. I just don't remember enough from high school :(

watching cdramas with french subtitles is the best idea i ever had. if the show is in a language i don't speak i'm already going to have to be closely reading the subtitles, so why not also use it as language practice? the subs go by so fast i don't have time to translate them internally into english, i just have to absorb the meaning without doing that (which is how it's supposed to work but i've never been fully able to do that before). AND the best part is that when i'm going about my day i'm finding that some of my internal monologue is just in french now?? i think it's because subs are almost entirely dialogue...i'm getting hours of dialogue practice without actually having to converse. it's also fun with cdramas specifically because i have by now picked up some chinese vocabulary from watching tv and i get to see how that vocabulary is translated into french. idk man i'm just having a great time.
#i used to watch stuff in english with french subtitles but it's just not the same#maybe it would be more interesting now that i'm better at french but idk it didn't really do much for me#because i'd mostly be understanding via the english i was hearing and didn't have to rely on the french for much#but with chinese there are only like. 20 sentences you could say that i wouldn't need a translation for#anything other than that and i have to rely on the subtitles#so i have to comprehend the french or i won't know what's happening at all#the other great thing about this method of improving comprehension is you can rewind!!!#you can pause. you can repeat it if necessary. you can theoretically do that in real conversations but watch out#so like. when i'm just reading a novel i can read at any old pace. and in fact since i always read aloud i can only read at#the speed at which i can speak french. which is faster than it used to be but still not as fast as i can read silently#but reading subs forces you to read pretty fast. which is good practice. and then whenever you miss something you still have#the option to back up#my posts#french#subtitles#f#i always have subtitles on even when it's english subs for oral english#but in that case the subs are an aid and i'm mostly comprehending by listening#auditory processing is easier with hints lol#so it's usually possible for me to say chop vegetables or something while watching english-language media#because i'll just look up when i need help understanding something. but i'm not reading all the subs#not the case for a show in any other language. if i'm going to watch a show in chinese i have to sit down and concentrate#if i'm already concentrating and reading all the subs might as well make some progress

Everyday goes a little something like this. I open tumblr and check the pathologic tag to find art because the vibe patho artists capture is exquisite.
I immediately see someone making fun of Daniil for having highly specific special interests that he likes talking about.
I ignore it and scroll further only to see another 5 posts calling him annoying for oh wait give me a second *rereads text posts making fun of Daniil* showing symptoms of autism.
I sigh like a depressed disappointed father. I close tumblr.

life update!!
hello my friends!
as ever, not active - life happened! I probably will continue not being active, so let's count this blog as on semi-hiatus. BUT. I have big news!
I am!!!! going to china!!!! in august!!! for ten months!!! to work as a volunteer interpreter in a martial arts academy!!!! in a buddhist temple!!!!
I get to train with the foreign students 8+ hours a day, and translate when needed!!!!
ok that's the announcement, love and peace <3
I will be getting up at stupid o'clock (5:45am), eating in silence, wearing uniform / robes at all times, teach a beginners' chinese class, and also. crucially. do really HUGE amounts of Kung Fu!!!!
on a serious note, I have been trying SO hard for SO long during and after covid to get back to china. but now I actually HAVE THE VISA, as of today, the ticket is booked, all - praise be - will be well. I am so afraid to jinx it further, and so very happy :)
I would never have thought when I started this blog back in 2020 that I'd be able to use what I've learnt, all the 'useless' martial arts knowledge from copious amounts of trash wuxia, in an actually useful context. more long term, I also get to see if interpreting is right for me, improve my chinese, and get very fit - all for free :D
hope everyone is well! - meichenxi

my favourite thing abt studying korean at a japanese university is that even when i speak to my classmates outside of class they still insist on speaking in korean.
whats even better is, even if they switch to english or japanese they still attach the korean honorific 씨 (ssi) to my name?? instead of using -san or nothing at all???
ITS ADORABLE?????

being a humanities major who’s friends with stem majors is so funny because you’ll ask your friends what they’re doing today and they’re like “UGH it’s so stressful i have to stabilize the reactor core for my nuclear power midterm and then i have to build the supercomputer from i have no mouth yet i must scream for my electrical engineering homework :/ what about you” and you’re like “oh well i have to read a fun little book and write an essay about gender.” and they still think you have it worse

it is quite interesting to me how the feeling of the sounds of a word can change how the word feels imthats such a nothing sentence i mean like oo sounds bigger than like ee sounds to me you know. and of course theres kiki and bouba snd all of this.
#this is prettyyyy much not related but i rly like seeing the like. things that a ton of languages have in common like the word for mom#ending to have m sounds bc thats one of the first sounds babies are able to make its very very cute to me yk.#i just think language is sooo interesting and like. theres just so much cool shit with languages you know . and every language is so so so#unique and it makes me kind of sad that i cant understand every language fluently bc i think likee. IDK i think its easy to think that the#only different thing abt languages is like the words yk when i was a kid the only way i thought if languages was like Oh instead of sayin#apple they say pomme which was stupid LOL but ykwim its like. everything about languages is so like. its all manmade its all made by the#people who speak that language words rise up in languages out of necessity and its constantly shifting and changing like. its so beautiful#and thats why i think its silly when ppl think of languages as this like Still thing that like. yk. i think its good when languagss change#and mix together and drift apart and fracture into totally different languages its just so beautiful to me . I LOVE LANGUAGES đź’š i love#accents and dialects and everything all of its just so amazing i wish i could learn about all of it. and i lovee like. videos reconstructing#how languages sounded even like 50 years ago bc they sound different ppl talked different like. its incredible I LOVE LANGUAGE GUYS#i knowww i knowww that most ppl dont rly care abt it and its whatever but i rly rly rly wish more historical movies and whatever had like.#i wish they showed more of what the language actually sounded like at the time I get why they dont i get why like i get it. itd make movies#kind of inaccessible youd have to 1. have an expert to figure out what the language wouldve sounded like 2. probably change the script a bit#3. Train all the actors to speak in that way. etc. but it justtt. idk. i know accuracy is Not the end all be all of good filmmaking i like#plenty of historical movies that arent accurate what matters is telling a good story at the end of the day and sometimes stuff like this#bogs it down and keeps you from relling rhe story tmyou want to tell yk. itd just be rly interesting to me its sort of the same way with#like um. historical clothing you know. i understand why in a lot period pieces the clothing isn't rly accurate and ks more just The vibe of#something from that time to a layperson it gets the job done and esp if the story isnt like. About clothing i get why you wiuldnt want to#put so much time and resources on that kind of thing. but it rly does add something yk#i think stuff like clothing food language etc r all like some of rhe fundamentals of culture so i think if you can get those down it rly#rly fleshes it all out and just makes it feel so much more real yk like. it makes you feel like youre actually in that time or place or#whatever... bc all 3 of those things tell you so much like it tells you about the climate it tells you about traditions and beliefs it tells#you whats important to them it tells you abt like. the lifestyle (like are their clothes very practical or are they more show offish do they#modtly grow their food or is it more hunting or foraging or importing likeee. Even the fabric of the garments tells you so much its rly just#incredible to me I LOVE HUMANITY
