My latest acquisition! And a PSA for first-time wood cane users
This lion design is from CG-Artis, the carved mermaid cane you can kinda-sorta see in the background is from Asterom. Both of these are Ukrainian artisan companies, I found them through their respective Amazon storefronts. The biggest difference between them is that CG-Artis canes have a fixed height (36") that either matches you or doesn't, and Asterom canes are custom-made to your measurements. Also CG-Artis uses ash, which is considerably lighter, so if you're nervous about wood being too heavy for you, they're good for that.
The Asterom mermaid was my first wood cane, and I'm so glad I found her, because all the other "mermaid" canes I found were like. Starbucks mermaids. Just a bust, and you couldn't see any tail to speak of except a vaguely-scaled handle (which of course is obscured by your hand, so what even is the point.)

Actually you know what I'm just going to sit here and plug both companies.
For any HR Giger fans out there, Asterom is here for all your Alien needs:

One other thing that distinguishes them is their metal accents (this one is on my bucket list)

Were I a more rootin'-tootin' sort, they have something from deep in the heart of Texas: the rattlesnake

And if you just want fun colorful resin, they've got you covered there, too, ergonomic handles in bright opaque blue and purple, and even some marbled combinations.
CG-Artis, not to be outdone, coming in with a T-Rex (And a smaller reptile kissing a flower. Mwah.)

A bucking bronco and a bull

This really cool cutaway style I haven't seen anywhere else

And more feminine nature designs like sparrows, flowers, and an angel that tumblr won't let me show you on this post because of the image limit.
#edited to plug these great companies#they range in price from $79 to $179#depending on the materials and the level of detail#resin is obviously less expensive than carved wood#this is just a small selection of both their designs#asterom has a pitbull that is probably next on my list#they each have dueling wolf designs#which i might look into if endless night ever comes back to dallas#and then the skull obviously#ngl tho i also want the cutaway bear#CG-Artis cane#asterom cane#wooden cane#artisan cane#carved wood#i should actually do a guide to fun canes#because i didn't even get into design toscano

Self-taught jewellery designer Samantha Rose’s Rapunzille the Label rakes in $12,000 a month
A self-taught jewellery designer who quit her full-time job to take on a new challenge now makes $12,000 a month selling ‘affordable fine’ earrings, rings and necklaces.
When Samantha Rose, 27, left a graphic communications agency to launch Rapunzille the Label in July 2019, friends and relatives said she was setting herself up for failure.
One year later, her designs have been featured in three issues of Vogue magazine.
The Melbourne businesswoman now ships around 150 units a month, netting an average of $12,000 every 30 days – three times more than she would be making as a graphic designer.
In 12 months, Samantha has learned how to code, source reliable manufacturers, manage Facebook adverts and produce her own quality pieces that don’t tarnish or turn skin green.
And while making the leap to self-employment has come with a ‘fair share of failure’, Samantha told Daily Mail Australia she’s learned more in a year of business than she ever would have working a nine-to-five job.
Scroll down for video
Self-taught jewellery designer Samantha Rose, founder of Rapunzille the Label
The 27-year-old Melbourne businesswoman (pictured) quit her full-time job as a graphic designer to launch a ‘demi-fine’ jewellery business that now rakes in $12,000 (AUD) a month
‘I’ve always been a jewellery lover, but I found that any items made from quality metals all had very generic designs that were mass produced,’ she said.
‘You’d see the same things everywhere. If you wanted something a little different you’d have to purchase fast fashion jewellery that had appalling quality and turned your skin green after one wear! It wasn’t sustainable.’
That lack of quality led Samantha to a relatively untapped section of the accessories industry: demi-fine jewellery, which combines semi-precious stones with a mix of low carat gold and metals like sterling silver.
‘It’s affordable fine jewellery,’ she said.
‘Rapunzille is kissing brass goodbye and the green skin that goes along with it, and saying hello to timeless luxury pieces that are suitable for sensitive skin. It’s jewellery that our customers will want to wear season after season.’
Her pieces (which include twisted chain padlock necklaces, pictured) range from $35 to $179
Prices range from $35 for sterling silver rings to $179 for gold padlock necklaces.
Her nod from Vogue came less than a month after the launch of her online store in July 2019, with buyers from the esteemed fashion bible reaching out over email.
‘I honestly thought it was a fake email, I almost deleted it without opening it,’ Samantha said.
‘I never expected them to contact me, I just couldn’t believe they’d stumbled across my small business. It kept me motivated to work harder.’
Samantha’s designs, made from a combination of semi-precious stones with a mix of low carat gold and metals like sterling silver
Her best-seller is the ‘Star Struck Ear Threaders’, delicate drop earrings made from 18 carat gold plating, sterling silver and cubic zirconia stones.
A TikTok video of Samantha wearing the earrings has been viewed 1.1million times since it was posted on June 18, prompting repeated sell-outs.
‘It went completely viral! We’ve been selling out pre-order after pre-order,’ she said.

‘We weren’t expecting such an influx, so I didn’t order enough initially. We’ve sold out three times and are heading for the fourth in the space of a few months.’
One American customer called them ‘by far the best jewellery purchase’ she has ever made in a review on the brand’s website.
What started as a range of six simple pieces has grown to 19 in less than a year, but Samantha insists it took ‘nine months’ to build a consistent customer base.
‘It was very slow at the start. We went from a few orders a month to over a hundred a month between April and June,’ she said.
Despite grave reservations from loved ones, the move to self-employment has ironically sheltered Samantha from the economic aftershocks triggered by COVID-19.
Australian retail turnover recorded its biggest ever monthly fall in April, plummeting almost 18 percent year-on-year, figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show.
The drop reverberated across every industry, with crippling losses in clothing, footwear, restaurants and fashion accessories.
And still, amid the chaos, Rapunzille has seen ‘exponential growth’, shipping a growing number of orders every week.
Samantha’s four tips for success
1. Preparation meets opportunity is the key to success.
2. You can learn something from every job you have.
3. Make sure you have some savings to live on if you decide to quit your job to pursue your business, as success is slow and steady.
4. Be ready to love learning new skills and to go outside your comfort zone.

Samantha (left) designs timeless pieces like her $179 gold padlock necklaces and $110 twisted hoop earrings (right) in the hopes that they never go out of fashion
‘We’ve been selling between $10,000 and $12,000 since COVID hit in March, which is crazy. Business grew exponentially during lockdown,’ Samantha said.
Based on those figures, she says her fledgling company is set to make a six-figure profit by the end of 2020.
‘This growth is very new so it’s hard to predict future numbers. We literally went from a few hundred dollars to $12,000 a month!’
A limited edition collection is in the works to ‘keep designs fresh for customers’, but for now Samantha is enjoying the success of a risk that paid off remarkably well.

121: George Bush: I honestly don’t have one
120: Gay Marriage: Everyone should be able to marry whomever they love. Why does it have to be voted on whether they can get married or not? Just let them live, be loved, and be happy.

118: Abortion: It is 2017, almost 2018, and women still don’t have control of their own bodies. I’m pro-choice. Abortion should be given as a choice to women. My mom had an abortion before she had me because she was really ill.

111: Work: wish I had one because all of my friends are making money, but once I get one I’ll wish I didn’t have a job so I can have more free time. It’s not like my parents will let me get a job anyways.

109: Gas Prices: i remember when it costed $5 or $6 a gallon. Please stay at $2.35
108: Designer Clothes: hella cool but also hella expensive. Thankful for cute cheap stores because I’m about to be a broke college student
107: College: thankful for the opportunity to get a higher education, but it’s always super expensive. If more jobs require a degree, why can’t we just make it more efficient to get a degree with less money? But that’s also too much to ask for
106: Sports: I like watching it and playing it is also fun.
105: My family: My parents divorced had me go through shit mentally and physically. (no they didn’t abuse me, their divorce was just difficult) I hope one day you two will stop acting like children and not beat down the other parent when we spend the night at your house. But I know it won’t ever end. I’m thankful my younger brothers won’t remember your divorce and they’re what keeps me going.
104: The future: I can’t wait to see what you hold. I can’t wait to go to college. I can’t wait to go into my career choice. I can’t wait to meet that special person. I can’t wait to start a family. I’m just excited for you

"I have been watching cricket for last many decades...Earlier, I used to watch on TV when I was working, but now that I am retired I watch it live," she said.
*INDIA GOING STRONG:*
The Indian cricket team are two times World Champions. In addition to winning the 1983 Cricket World Cup, they triumphed over Sri Lanka in the 2011 Cricket World Cup on home soil. They were also runners-up at the 2003 Cricket World Cup, and semifinalists four times(1987, 1996, 2015 and 2019). They came last in the Super Six stage in the 1999 Cricket World Cup and have been knocked out 4 times in the Group stage (1975, 1979, 1992 and 2007). India's historical win-loss record at the cricket world cup is 46-27, with 1 match being tied and another one being abandoned due to rain.
*HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 2019 WORLD CUP:*
The much-awaited India vs Pakistan clash took place at Old Trafford, Manchester on 16 June. However, this match turned out to be another no-contest in favour of India. India were made to bat first in a match which was affected by rain. Once Pakistan missed the chance to get Rohit run out in the seventh over[22], the game was over for Pakistan as Rohit went on to make a brilliant century (140 off 113 balls, 14 fours, 3 sixes), ably supported by Rahul (57 off 78 balls, 3 fours, 2 sixes) and Kohli (77 off 65 balls, 7 fours), however a good death-bowling performance from Mohammad Amir, who took 3/47, restricted India to 336/5 when at one stage, they were cruising towards a post-350 score. Pakistan's reply, however, had little effect. Barring a 104-run second-wicket stand between Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman, the rest of the Pakistan batting crumbled against India's bowling attack, with a combined bowling effort from Pandya (8-0-44-2), who took the wickets of veterans Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik in consecutive deliveries, Vijay Shankar (5.2-0-2-22) and Kuldeep (9-1-2-32) leaving Pakistan at 166/6 in the 35th over before the rain began to fall. After the rain, Pakistan's target was reduced to 302 which had to be scored within an impossible 5 overs by the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern method, thus handing India yet another win against their arch-rivals and maintaining their all-win record against them in the World Cup. Pakistan managed to finish their innings at 212/6. India won the match by 89 runs (D/L).[23] Unfortunately for India, Bhuvneshwar sustained a hamstring niggle during the match while bowling, ruling him out for the matches against Afghanistan and the West Indies.[24]
India then played the teams who had qualified for the World Cup through the qualifying tournament, Afghanistan and the West Indies,[25] at Southampton and Old Trafford respectively. The match against Afghanistan was a thriller which India managed to win by 11 runs. On a slow pitch, the Indian batsman struggled to make runs against the Afghan bowling attack, with Afghan's spin attack of Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi, as well as the medium-pace of captain Gulbadin Naib, never allowing the Indian batsmen to settle down. India limped its way to 224/8 in their 50 overs, which was their lowest total batting first and completing their 50 overs since 2010.[26] In the chase, Afghanistan played sedately, with Naib, Rahmat Shah and Nabi making significant contributions, with Nabi going on to score 52 off 55 balls. However a strong bowling performance from India, with contributions from Bumrah (10-1-2-39), Shami (9.5-1-40-4) and Chahal (10-0-36-2) and especially Bumrah and Shami's death-over bowling, kept a check on the Afghan run rate. In the final over, the Afghans needed 16 runs to win the match. Once Shami got Nabi out in the third ball of the final over, the match was over for Afghanistan as he got the wickets of tailenders Aftab Alam and Mujeeb in consecutive deliveries to achieve a hat-trick, which was only the second by an Indian bowler in a World Cup since Chetan Sharma in 1987.[27] Afghanistan was all out for 213 in 49.5 overs.[28] The match against the Caribbeans on the other hand, witnessed a clinical performance from India, with the team winning by a huge margin of 125 runs. Though India, who batted first, lost Rohit (18 off 23 balls, 1 four and 1 six) early, a good knock from Kohli (72 off 82 balls, 8 fours), supplemented from Dhoni (56 off 61 balls, 3 fours, 2 sixes), which averted a potential middle-order collapse, and also a cameo from Pandya (46 off 38 balls, 5 fours), brought India to a respectable 268/7 in 50 overs. This was followed by yet another strong performance with the ball, with Shami (6.2-0-4-16) taking 4 wickets again, as the Windies were bowled out for just 143 in the 35th over.[29]
India’s first loss in the 2019 World Cup came against hosts England in the first of 2 back-to-back matches at Edgbaston, Birmingham, the other match being against Bangladesh. India, who were put to bowl first, bowled poorly for the first time in the tournament, including Shami (10-1-5-72), who was expensive despite taking a 5-wicket haul, as the English batsman, including openers Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow, who cracked an attacking century, as well as all-rounder Ben Stokes, who scored 79 off just 54 balls, made merry of the Indian bowling attack. England posted 337/7 in their 50 overs. Chasing 338 to win, India lost Rahul early for a duck and from there, they were never able to recover, batting slowly due to a deteriorating pitch. In their first 10 overs, India was only able to score 27 runs for the loss of 1 wicket. Despite Rohit’s third century of the tournament (102 off 109 balls, 15 fours) along with Kohli’s fifth-consecutive half-century (66 off 76 balls, 7 fours), England’s total proved to be beyond India’s reach and they ended their innings at 306/5, losing by 31 runs. Dhoni (42 off 31 balls, 4 fours, 1 six) in particular was criticised by former players and fans for his inability to accelerate the scoring rate in the end overs.[30] In contrast, the match against Bangladesh which took place two days later was for the most part, a one-sided affair in favour of India, though Bangladesh put up a strong fight. India started in the strongest possible manner, with Rohit (104 off 92 balls, 7 fours, 5 sixes) scoring his fourth century in the tournament. Along with Rahul (77 off 92 balls, 6 fours, 1 six), the duo put up a partnership of 180 runs for the first wicket, which was the highest partnership by India for the first wicket in the World Cup at the time, beating the previous record of 172 by Rohit and Dhawan against Ireland in 2015. A score of 400 plus seemed likely at one stage, but once Rohit departed, there was a middle-order collapse due to pacer Mustafizur Rahman's 5/59 off his 10 overs. However cameos from Pant (48 off 41 balls, 6 fours and 1 six) and Dhoni (35 off 33 balls, 4 fours) brought India to 314/9 in their 50 overs. In response, Bangladesh fought back, with all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan scoring 66, but a spirited bowling performance from India, courtesy Bumrah (10-1-55-4) and Pandya (10-1-60-3), who also took Shakib's wicket, brought Bangladesh down to 179/6 in the 34th over. Despite a valiant rearguard action from the Bangladesh lower middle-order, with a 66-run partnership for the seventh wicket between Mohammad Saifuddin, who scored a fighting half-century, and Sabbir Rahman, Bangladesh folded for 286, India winning by 29 runs. With this win, India qualified for the semifinals of the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

The 10 Best PDF Sites on the Internet Today
Various file formats have been proliferating in recent years, as users of Microsoft Word, Apple Pages, LibreOffice Writer, and G Suite often find that opening a file sent from a competing word processor is akin to trying to read a foreign language. The seemingly only solution in the face of this complexity comes in the form of the trusty PDF file.
Adobe’s Portable Document Format has history dating as far back as 1993 before becoming standardized for widespread use in 2008. In the time since then, seemingly countless sites have sprung up offering services designed for PDF management. Since those looking to utilize Mailform’s print and mail service may wish to upload a document as a PDF, we hope that this list of sites will be helpful to you in modifying your file in the precise way you are looking for.
So without any further ado, here is our list of the 10 best PDF sites available on the internet today.
1. Smallpdf
Previously topping our list of Top 10 PDF to Word Conversion Services, there’s a lot to like in Smallpdf that makes it stand above the competition.
Whether you are looking to compress a PDF file, convert to or from a different file format, rotate, split, merge, eSign, or even unlock a password-protected document, Smallpdf has you covered. The site currently allows for free document management in 24 languages, with a premium plan available for $48/year that includes offline access through the Smallpdf Desktop application, no ads or limitations, and some additional advanced features.
While plenty of online PDF management solutions have many of the same features, Smallpdf’s slick and intuitive interface and largely free services earn it the top spot in this list.
2. Foxit
Geared more towards enterprise users, Foxit offers a range of productivity solutions that are relatively unique in the PDF management space. The Foxit PDF reader is widely regarded as one of the best in its class, and the PhantomPDF editor is a great tool for editing PDF documents as you see fit. Furthermore, products like Foxit Studio Photo, the Foxit Rendition Server, and PDF SDK provide robust networking solutions to individuals, corporations, and developers respectively.
Despite the suite of high-performance programs that Foxit brings to the table, the cost will likely be a major sticking point for individuals who simply want to convert a few documents or complete a simple split or merge operation. While the Foxit PDF reader is completely free, one license for Studio Photo will run you $60, with PhantomPDF coming in at either $129 or $159 depending on whether you are using it as an individual or for your business.
The price definitely sets it in a tier apart from the rest of this list, but it is undeniable that Foxit also provides the top-of-class service in the PDF management space to match.
3. Soda PDF
Billing itself as the very first fully functional online PDF solution, Soda PDF’s Anywhere service lets users access their documents from the web browser of any internet-connected device. Besides basic features like PDF conversion, merging, splitting, and compressing, some of Soda PDF distinguishes itself through compatibility with more than 300 file formats, professional-grade data protection, and integration with popular cloud storage solutions like OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, and Evernote. In addition, the inclusion of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is a welcome feature for those who are looking to transform scanned images into an editable PDF file.
While there is a limited free trial for those interested in dipping their toes in the service ecosystem, Soda PDF is a paid software solution with the price varying based on whether you prefer enrolling in a recurring plan or a one-time purchase. The Home plan will run you $48 annually, with the Premium plan coming in at $84, with both plans offering access to the Soda PDF web application, free upgrades, and additional features. A one-time edition purchase will cost $79 for the Home set of software and $129 for the more advanced Premium suite, which includes such functions as custom signatures, permissions, and password protection.
4. ToPDF
This no-frills website might be all the casual user ever needs. ToPDF provides conversion from virtually any readable document format to PDF in addition to reverse conversion from PDF to DOC, DOCX, Text, JPG, and PNG formats. Throw in PDF compression and merge functions and an extremely user-friendly drag-and-drop interface and ToPDF looks more and more like a simple yet powerful PDF management solution.
And we’ve even left the best part of ToPDF for last: it’s completely free!
5. PDF 2 Go

The main page of PDF 2 Go displays their services in well-organized columns. From editing features like merging, splitting and rotating to so called improvement functions like compressing, protecting or unlocking a file, PDF 2 Go complements its standard range of supported file formats for conversion well.
While PDF 2 Go can be used for free at a basic level with a drag-and-drop interface similar to other entries on this list, it also offers an annual plan for $48 that includes unlimited document size, access to all tools, and no advertisements.
6. I Love PDF
Resembling SmallPDF and PDF 2 Go, I Love PDF offers virtually any PDF management service most users will ever need. Whether you are looking to convert, merge, split, compress, rotate, repair, unlock, encrypt, or just generally need to organize your PDF file, I Love PDF has you covered.
The service can be used completely for free, although power users can pay a modest fee of between $6 to $9 per month to access expanded file size limitations and Desktop tools.
7. Nuance Power PDF

More akin to Foxit than the more lightweight options on this list, Nuance's Power PDF is a costly yet robust PDF management service ecosystem. Coming in at $129 for a single license of Power PDF Standard, $179 for Power PDF Advanced, and volume licensing options available, Nuance’s products are best suited for enterprise software use. That might come as little suprise to those aware that Nuance once provided the speech recognition technology for Apple's Siri.
Besides common features like file format conversion and editing, some of the more advanced features available in the various tiers of Nuance’s Power PDF products include automated workflows, DocuSign® signature inclusion, and sensitive information redaction.
8. PDF Suite
PDF Suite largely bucks the pricing trends of previously listed options on this list, offering three different service tiers of $29.95, $44.95, and $64.95.
The Standard service comes with support for such features as batch conversion, the ability to insert an attachment, and PDF creation from a URL.
The Professional service, meanwhile, adds in MS Office Plug-in support and additional editing tools like adjusting document content forward or backward, cropping, and managing hyperlinks.
Finally the Pro + OCR option effectively takes the set of services offered in the Professional line and adds OCR support, letting users scan documents and images into editable PDF files with vastly improved text recognition.
9. PDFelement

Advertising itself as a better alternative to Adobe Acrobat, PDFelement includes OCR functions and allows users to generate PDF/A files for archival purposes. PDFelement also has applications for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android and offers support in 9 languages, making it a relatively flexible enterprise-oriented software suite.
Despite its overall utility as a PDF management tool, PDFelement advertises its licensing options strictly for large organizations. As a result, it is much less likely to find use with the vast majority of individuals looking to manage their PDF files.
10. Free PDF Converter
Here’s one last free PDF management solution to round out the last. Users looking for a very simple drag-and-drop interface can convert to or from a basic mix of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, JPEG, and PNG file formats. Merge, split, rotate, and delete functions are also included on the site, making Free PDF Converter a completely serviceable option for an individual user looking to edit a PDF quickly and on the cheap.
We hope this list has been helpful to you in finding the PDF management solution that works best for you.

The questions surrounding Pacific Crest Trail resupply in this year’s Pacific Crest Trail Thru-hiker Survey were expanded to better answer what’s one of the trails biggest challenges (at least in the planning stages).
Hopefully this information will help to lessen the unnecessary stress that hikers put themselves through when attempting to plan how to get more food and supplies into their packs whilst tramping through PCT wilderness.
Remember, this information is sourced from actual PCT hikers and is more than just one dude’s opinion (I’m that dude), but if we come across any anomalies in the data I will be sure to add my two cents (because I can’t afford more).
NOTE: A list of the different categories I broke hikers into and how they are identified can be found at the end of this post.
What your future holds.
TO MAIL OR NOT TO MAIL?
First, hikers think they must decide how many resupply boxes to send.
THIS IS WRONG.
Unless you’ve chosen to mail yourself ALL your resupply boxes, which I would definitely NOT recommend doing unless you have a very legitimate reason (e.g. you only eat Vegemite and dehydrated free-range poultry), then the only boxes you’re going to want to concern yourself with sending before you begin your hike are those you’ll need in the desert.
Instead, what you do is MAIL YOURSELF BOXES FROM THE TRAIL. When you get to a stop with a large and affordable enough selection of hiker food you buy yourself an extra resupply, pack it into a box, and mail it up the trail.
This saves you the stress of needing to pack everything into boxes beforehand and allows you the flexibility to mix up your resupplies on the trail (because chances are your taste/diet will change as you being to turn into an unstoppable hiking machine).
STRATEGY | 75% mailed SOME resupply boxes, 16% mailed ALL, 9% mailed NONE
FINISH – AVERAGE BOXES SENT | 12 (σ = 8.5)
Let’s go with the average and mail 12 resupply boxes. Where do we want to send them?
According to this year’s class, the places you’re going to want to mail your twelve resupply boxes are (in geographical order from south to north):
Warner Springs (Desert) – Mile 110
Kennedy Meadows (Sierra) – Mile 703
Sierra City (NorCal) – Mile 1,198
Crater Lake/Mazama Village Store (Oregon) – Mile 1,830
Shelter Cove (Oregon) – Mile 1,912
Big Lake Youth Camp (Oregon) – Mile 2,002
Timberline Lodge (Oregon) – Mile 2,107
Trout Lake (Washington) – Mile 2,234
White Pass (Washington) – Mile 2,303
Snoqualmie Pass (Washington) – Mile 2,402
Stevens Pass/Skykomish (Washington) – Mile 2,476
Stehekin (Washington) – Mile 2,574
RESUPPLY BOXES
So for the ENTIRE STATE of California you are only sending yourself THREE BOXES.
A lot of hikers also say that they wish they would have SENT BOXES FROM THE TRAIL instead of preparing all their resupplies ahead of time.
I know this might sound like a scary idea (does it really?), but trust me, it’s a smart move.
TOTAL PER SECTION:
DESERT: 1 (Warner Springs)
SIERRA: 1 (Kennedy Meadows)
NORCAL: 1 (Sierra City)
OREGON: 4 (Crater Lake, Shelter Cove, Big Lake Youth Camp, Timberline Lodge)
WASHINGTON: 5 (Trout Lake, White Pass, Snoqualmie Pass, Stevens Pass, Skehekin)
That’s it? Yes, that’s it.
PRO TIP: Use something flashy on your box so it stands out.
And the idea that you don’t need to mail a lot of resupply boxes isn’t only coming from people who mailed themselves far too many. An entire 12% of people who sent FEWER than the average of 12 said they would have preferred fewer boxes when asked what about their resupply strategy they would have changed.
I also asked hikers where they would have rather mailed themselves a box instead of buying locally. This could be either because the selection isn’t very good, the prices are high, or the store owners are assholes.
The top responses were (in geographic order from south to north):
Warner Springs (Desert)
Agua Dulce (Desert)
Vermilion Valley Resort (VVR) (Sierra)
Kennedy Meadows North (NorCal)
Sierra City (NorCal)
Belden (NorCal)
Mazama Village Store (Crater Lake) (Oregon)
Stehekin (Washington)
Agua Dulce, VVR, Kennedy Meadows North, and Belden did not make the “send a box here” list, so if you’re planning on resupplying at one of these locations (our “average resupply plan” is below) then you may want to consider sending an additional box.
Lastly (for this section), I asked what CHANGES hikers would make to their resupply strategies?
Mail fewer boxes (overwhelmingly).
Mail boxes from on then trail instead of ahead of time.
Send less food in resupply boxes.
Resupply more frequently.
WHAT FOOD TO SEND
Okay, but once you have your boxes, what should you be PUTTING INSIDE them? Some of the TOP COMMENTS I got from hikers about their resupplies said the following:
More variety in boxes (you can only eat so many Snickers and tortillas)
More dehydrated foods in boxes (if you have the means, then do it)
Less food in boxes (you’ll be stopping more than you think)
Healthier food in boxes (empty calories only get you so far)
More snacks, fewer meals in boxes (forget about the idea of “meals”)
#gallery-0-5 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-5 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Looking for meal suggestions? The favorite (and least favorite) foods as reported by hikers was as follows:
FAVORITE SNACKS:
Tortillas
Snickers
Ramen
Candy
Nutella
Mountain House
“NEVER AGAIN” FOODS:
Clif Bars
Idahoan Potatoes
Pop-Tarts
Assorted bars
Tuna
Oatmeal
HOW FREQUENTLY TO STOP
Another question on the resupply agenda is “How often do I want to resupply?”
This is incredibly difficult for hikers to accurately predict before starting the trail because few people know what their pace is going to be or what their still unknown trail friends will want to do (just remember to hike your own hike).
Stopping more frequently means less time spent hiking (which before starting your hike might sound like a bad thing), but it also means that you will not be carrying as much weight (in food) between your resupplies (lighter = better).
So how many stops did the Class of 2016 make on their thru-hikes?
FINISH – AVERAGE RESUPPLY STOPS MADE | 26 (σ = 6.5)
And in their comments, many said they would have liked to resupply MORE OFTEN.
So let’s say that we’re going to just take the average plus one standard deviation to accommodate for the “more often” factor. That gives us a total of 32 resupply stops. That means you’re resupplying EVERY 83 MILES (134 km) on average. If you don’t want to carry more than seven days worth of food (which is a lot), then you would need to be doing an AVERAGE OF 11.8 miles per day (18.9 km).
How many miles per day did this year’s PCT Class average? 19.6 miles / 31.5 km.
Seems reasonable enough.
Good thing I haven’t begun to hate Snickers yet.
THE AVERAGE PCT RESUPPLY PLAN
Based on survey responses we can piece together what an “average” Pacific Crest Trail hiker’s resupply looked like for a 2016 thru-hike.
Now that we know how many boxes we’re mailing (12), where we’re mailing them to, what’s going in them, and how often we want to stop for resupplies, we can focus on arguably the most important question: where exactly are we going to stop?
A look we shall take, yes?
NOTE: The percentage of hikers who resupplied at each of the following places has been coded as follows: OVER 66%, 33-66%, LESS THAN 33%. Also, stops are listed in geographical order from south to north.

Magento vs Shopify-what are the differences?
It is really important to choose the right platform for your online store. This is a foundation for the success of your eCommerce business. As the demand is high, there are many different platforms out there. However, Magento and Shopify are the two biggest ones. As a matter of fact, Magento vs Shopify has been a debate for the top name in the market. In this article, we will differentiate these two platforms so that store owners can decide which one is the best eCommerce platform for their needs.
Magento vs Shopify-what are the differences?
#1: Magento is more popular than Shopify
Magento eCommerce platform is more popular and widely used. Although both platforms have helped build successful business, there are plenty of big businesses that use Magento eCommerce, for example, Nike, Rosetta Stone, Olympus, and Ghirardelli. But that doesn’t mean Shopify is losing the battle for big business. There are a few big ones that are using Shopify, including Tesla and the store of Los Angeles Lakers. However, the majority of Shopify’s users are small and mid-sized businesses.
#2: They use different coding languages
Magento and Shopify use different coding languages. While Magento eCommerce uses PHP as its coding language, Liquid is what Shopify uses. In addition, Magento is open source, which means the source code is freely available and you can modify them. But proprietary code of Shopify can’t be modified. Also, the template code can be altered with Magento to suit the needs of the store, but you can’t do it with Shopify. Users need to seriously consider these factors as they decide how successful your business can be.
Magento and Shopify use different code languages
With that being said, Shopify is more suitable for simple stores, and Magento is ideal for more complex ones because they might require to change the source code for advanced functions.
#3: Magento has a larger and active community
As Magento is more popular, there is no surprise when you look at the wealth of its community. It allows Magento developers to create solutions for a vast number of user needs. Beginners can learn more about Magento eCommerce platform with a number of resources. Also, it is easy for you as a business owner to find a capable developer to work with. Any Magento user can go through Magento to find help, or access support and maintenance services.
#4: Magento is scalable and has better capability
Magento eCommerce platform is more suitable for large-scale stores with many products. If you are looking to open a small business, you should opt for Shopify. However, Magento is a better choice for you to grow an online business with more flexibility.
In addition, Magento is a robust tool with more than 5,000 add-on extensions, including free and paid ones. On the other hand, Shopify has over 100 apps and add-ons. So you know who wins when it comes to capability.
Using Magento, store owners can upgrade their online business anytime through the extensions. For example, the extensions enable you to add custom coupon error messages or multiple employee logins. Magento users can control every aspect of their website. Also, you can create and manage a few stores using the same admin panel. Most business owners would value this feature, depending on their goals.
Apart from that, Magento users are also offered more frontend features such as coupon codes, wish lists, order status modules, giftcards, customer dashboards, related products, and more.
#5: Shopify is easier to use
Shopify is perfect for non-developers. Shopify users won’t have many problems using the platform and it doesn’t take them a lot of time to set up their online shop after signing up. You can even use Shopify’s website-building tool to customize your store features in-house.
However, it doesn’t mean that Magento is difficult to use and you can’t use the platform if you are not a developer. Magento has been offering ready-made extensions for users, which makes Magento a lot easier to work with. In case you have any problems, contact CO-WELL ASIA to find your solutions.
Shopify platform is easier to work with
The new version of Magento also comes with a user-friendly admin panel. It’s simpler and easier for admin to sort customers, access advanced reports, or market products, etc. Without the need of advanced development skills, users can completely manage their stores.
Also, as an admin, you can accomplish more tasks in a short time, which is perfect for those who have long to-do lists. You can even manage eCommerce stores anytime, anywhere with optimization for various screen sizes.
#6: Expense for using Magento and Shopify
Using Shopify, users don’t have to pay for hosting service, but you have to pay a monthly subscription fee. If you first start using the Shopify software, you are given a free trial, but you have to pay after that. The price for a basic store is US $29/month, for a pro store is US $79/month and for an unlimited store is US $179/month.
Shopify provides users with access to more features like abandoned cart recovery, gift cards, and advanced reporting if they pay more per month. Meanwhile, if you use Magento eCommerce platform, you can add these features for significantly less per year. A complete abandoned cart recovery solution provided by CreativeMinds costs you only US $39/year with support and upgrades.
Shopify users will be charged transaction fees if they make payments through PayPal, Braintree, and Authorize.net. Every time you make a transaction, Shopify will take a cut from it. The more months you subscribe, the lower transaction fees you will be charged. However, users can use Shopify’s direct payment gateway to avoid these fees.
Meanwhile, Magento users can download the Community Edition for free. This is a great deal for both developers and small businesses. However, Magento is a self-hosted solution, so a third-party hosting service is necessary and users will have to pay for it. And with Magento, users can choose their hosting solution. The price of hosting service ranges from US $3.95 USD (SiteGround or HostGator) to over US $100. Depending on their needs and finance, they can choose a solution that they want and are willing to pay for. A good hosting service will affect site speed, storage, and the number of products your online store can handle. So be wise!
For both Magento and Shopify, you will have other potential costs such as the cost of any add-ons. Also, Magento users may need to pay for the services of a developer to set up and manage the store.
#7: Magento offers flexible design options
In order to create a successful online store, you need a unique brand with attractive design. You can find plenty of free and premium themes from both Magento and Shopify. The themes are responsive and function on different screen sizes. Keep in mind that more people are using their mobile devices to shop online, so it is important for you to have a mobile-friendly online store.
Users can create beautiful sites with Magento eCommerce platform
However, Shopify themes don’t allow for a lot of adjustments. Users can change colors and fonts, but they can’t fully customize themes. This will be a possible issue for store branding. Magento users are allowed to drag and drop visual editing. So even if you are not a coder but you use Magento eCommerce platform, you can create beautiful sites.
#8: Magento has better SEO scores
SEO scores play an important role in expanding your business. If it is easy to find your stores and products via Google or other search engines, your store is more likely to get more online purchases. The SEO capabilities of your platform help drive organic traffic to your online store.

#9: Shopify has slightly better speed
SEO is an important factor, so is website speed. This is also a determinant of whether customers buy from your store. If customers have to wait for a long time for pages to load, they are likely to move to another website.
The faster your online store responds, the more customers you have, therefore, the more successful your business becomes. Magento users used to describe the platform to be slow. However, the new version, Magento 2, performs an average of 20% faster.
#10: Magento vs Shopify: which one has good checkout?
It is crucial for an online store to have a quick and user-friendly checkout. The Magento 2 checkout process is full of exceptional features. It is automatic, free of distraction and more. Also, Magento separates shipping and payment information to avoid confusion.
Meanwhile, Shopify checkout is also a great process with the semi-recent introduction of a one-page responsive checkout. However, Shopify business owners who have lower tier pricing plans can not view real-time shipping rates, which is inconvenient for their customers.
