Matt Murdock and Borrowers
i can only speak for the show specifically because i haven't read the comics, but engrained in daredevil's story is commentary about the effects of capitalism, power, and greed on the lower class. matt tries to combat this through the law, but even he knows the law is flawed and favours the rich and powerful. matt needs to help people - that's just how he is. the nelson & murdock office was literally going under due to matt, karen, and foggy taking payments in other forms besides monetarily (baked goods, for example) because they know the people who NEED help often can't afford it. all three of them are bleeding hearts who understand injustice and fight it day and night
with that in mind, how does it influence matt's interactions with borrowers? specifically with goldfinch, the protagonist of my daredevil g/t concept
matt knows that goldfinch is taking things. cloth and other little objects are going missing, but most notable is the food. they're taking necessities to survive. he recognizes that this is someone in need, someone who matt can help without putting on a suit, whether it be armoured or a two-piece. he leaves crumbs by the entrances frequented by finch. he pretends he doesn't notice their little heists, which leads to them becoming outrageously overconfident and quite literally stealing (*cough*borrowing) under his nose. he's shocked and impressed by finch's lack of fear (or perhaps a lack of self-preservation), but also amused at how much they're underestimating him
underneath the genuine saviour complex, matt is fascinated by their existence. he's so curious to know more. and can you blame the guy? a tiny person just four-inches-tall. how? where did they come from? he has a mini faith crisis, but that gets pushed down to unpack later (never, if he can help it)
matt empathizes with finch. living in a world not designed for you is a struggle he knows very well. 'super-senses' this and that, yada-yada - doesn't change the fact that he is blind. he can't read visual language or pictures; he can't see lights or colours; he struggles to operate technology and touch-screens are only getting more prevalent. if he isn't disregarded or patronized, he's infantilized. and matt is determined not to belittle finch. they may be small, smaller than his hand, but they're not helpless
MORE UNDER THE CUT!!
that said, it definitely takes a learning curve: he's protective over this tiny person. it's a big world, and they could be easily hurt. he doesn't intervene when they're climbing furniture and shit because, hey, he does parkour nightly. who's he to stop them? they have it handled. but when finch starts leaving the apartment and being out in the streets? hoooo boy. goldfinch can be cocky and reckless, especially in dangerous situations (matt's begging them to value their life a bit more and finch is just astounded at his lack of self-awareness), and matt so badly wants to put them in a little pouch where they'll be safe (he won't; they made an agreement)
don't even get me started on when frank finds out about goldfinch. dear god. matt wants castle nowhere near them
when the other defenders discover finch exists, matt is wary (more than finch, funnily enough). he didn't want them to know. these people are fighters (pot, kettle) with super strength: borrowers are extremely breakable and more people knowing increases the risk of finch getting hurt (also increases their protection, little does he know). luke is his gentlemanly self, giving finch space and genuinely interested in them as a person, but danny has trouble with boundaries and can be a little much (finch stabs him. he learns). they're both very careful. beyond the surprise, jessica is her indifferent (read: depressed) self. she's kind of unsettled, actually, and doesn't want to go anywhere near finch. this could be for a multitude of reasons (angst, uncanniness of a tiny person, etc) but all finch cares about is one less bean crowding them. holy shit, they thought one was bad...
more on foggy, karen, claire, colleen, misty, and frank with goldfinch in the future :3 i'm gettin the whole gang together bc defenders' group dynamics are my playground and i simply must have g/t interactions with them
matt keeps goldfinch a secret. of course he does - secrets are his jam. after meeting finch and learning about tiny people, he starts discerning smaller voices that he thought were merely distant; noticing little movements he mistook for rodents. one night he's out daredevil'ing, he rescues a borrower from a raccoon and that borrower tells others that the human vigilante with horns saved them. matt hears birds flying closer than ever, following him; perched like they're observing him. little voices whispering about the devil. word travels fast through the borrower network and borrowers in the area start to panic. finch has to run interference and reconnect with the community they left behind before this panic gets out of hand
matt keeps an ear out for borrowers like any citizen who might need help. finch acts as an advocate to vouch on his behalf because a big, scary human looking straight out of a nightmare isn't the greatest impression on borrower-kind. they're working on it
this went in a different direction than i originally planned. i swear i was going to write about the parallels of borrowers with the growing endemic of houselessness and poverty related to increased 'crime', and matt murdock struggling to uphold the law while also knowing the law fails and persecutes so many disadvantaged people, but i got carried away with interpersonal relationships. i'm actually so intrigued by borrowers being a critique of ableism, classism, and capitalism

Daylight
I've just discovered a company called Daylight that has launched their first product: It's an Android tablet that uses a new screen technology that provides the same contrast and matte surface of an e-Ink display but has the 60 FPS of an LCD. Cool.
In addition to this screen technology, they claim to have made improvements to the OS, UI, and UX to reduce the addiction, attention-grabbing, notification-spewing, dopamine-fuelled experience of most other modern smart devices; with the idea being that this is a device you will use more calmly in a more focused way with no blue light and less stress.
They're calling it the DC-1, which is short for Daylight Computer I.
I've watched a few videos about them and their CEO & Founder, Anjan Katta. He's got the eloquence and thoughtfulness of Steve Jobs. He spoke to me.
You can watch a cool introduction to the company, him, and the product below from S3:
youtube
I believe in their product and in their mission. Well, I believe in it enough to talk about it here, just not enough to buy one yet.
To be fair, I wanted to buy one, but what discouraged me was the following:
They haven't built up the supply chain to be able to ship units on a whim yet. Right now, they're taking orders for "batches" that will be shipping in the coming months. A Founder's Edition unit currently costs $729 USD (That's almost $1,000 CAD at the time of writing). A Founder's Edition is said to come with a stylus, charging cable, sleeve, and "extras". If you don't want to spend that much right now, you can instead put down a refundable $100 USD deposit on a unit that will be available in Q1 2025. At the time of writing, Batches 1 through 3 are sold out, and they were going to ship between early July and late September respectively. Batch 4 is open right now with 185 units available and it ships in November 2024. I don't do Kickstarters. This is their first product and even if I trusted that they would ship on time, $1,000 CAD is a lot to ask me to wait until November for. Or $100 to wait until next year for. I don't blame them for needing to launch this way, I don't think less of them for it, it's just not a fit for me right now. I bought my Steam Deck from Valve under similar circumstances, but I trust Valve, and I needed a gaming computer: I don't know Daylight yet.
I like my Kindle and iPad mini fine thank you very much. They're small, this is bigger. I don't need a bigger tablet. Admittedly, despite my efforts to make my iPad mini less distracting, I could do more. My interest in the DC-1 is purely out of curiosity because it's New Tech™ and I love tech. If I genuinely had a need, this would maybe be a different situation.
This is their first product. I have no idea how reliable the device is yet, nor do I know how trustworthy they are yet warranty-wise, or competent support-wise. I just learned about them a few days ago, so forgive my hesitation. Just because you launched doesn't mean you're ready to support your customers just yet. This is the late-adopter in me speaking: I want more data before committing. Maybe a year or two of reviews and seeing them in the news. Which brings me to my next point:
Who says they'll still be here in a year or two? I don't just buy devices for the sake of the device. I also want to know the company I'm buying from will support the device for as long as I use it. I respect that it took them 6 years to get to this point and launch, but if this screen technology is as revolutionary as they claim, I predict a few things could happen:
They get bought out by someone bigger (e.g. Amazon), they stop supporting their customers, the screen technology either gets integrated into the next Kindle or worse: The acquiring company mothballs the technology to silence a competitor.
Someone claims patent infringement and they get ceased-and-desisted into oblivion (I don't think this is likely, but crazier things have happened)
My favourite: The market recognizes the value of the screen technology and Daylight agrees to license it to others, making it ubiquitous and the DC-1 obsolete because others can iterate with it faster and cleaner.
Someone else manages to create a similar screen technology for cheaper
I'm excited by this product, this company, their philosophy, and their founder. I look forward to seeing how they evolve in the coming years, and I'm genuinely rooting for them. I might eventually pick up a unit one day, just not today.
Go get 'em, Anjan.

It's a large number of people here who are sometimes indigent on the street and they should not be this house is everywhere they have money they're just assholes okay they have family and friends and they can ask and you don't and save it there all these people and they're moochers in grifters Petty thieves and low life low level sleazeball murderers and I have to watch him all the time when they're gross and it's a good lesson really the best lesson planners I've ever seen purpose that's not really on purpose but it worked we have some announcements and we're going to make them
-there's a few people here who are in trouble for what they're doing we did mention a few but this guy Trump is now back on the naughty list he has been on it but they're now doubling up on what they're doing and they see that he's screwing around here at this time and he was caught and his car because the cops came down to find him for something he was doing and it was related to robots and they do about it so the a****** tells her son what he was doing now the cops are developing actual warrants and a lot more of them because of his big mouth he's a huge idiot and it's running by seeing as the balls and stuff but then boy what an incompetent piece of s*** and he's mean too since area is mean all the time to our son when he's a complete failure and his body is a piece of s*** and is running and he's going to he's going to tear in the hell out of all sorts of new stitches inside and he's already bleeding internally and he doesn't know any better I'll tell you what though we do need him dead and I mean it that son says cuz people believe in him and it will probably be another month but he'll die a bunch of times until then and we do expect that and they feel it's true the guy doesn't have a concept that our son understands the technology he's using the phone and he can call out who's messing with it has us searched out and usually is right and he invented a lot of the cell phone technology and the touch screen and for UPS now it's on the phone and the guy is a massive idiot cold everything off him says it's own good and not all of it but really if you wasn't trying to harm our son it would be fine but because of that it makes it mood it does have a very strong effect for us it really most of it is taking this a****** stuff he's an idiot he says it's good for me because we're taking all your stuff and a lot of it not straight out of the chute by the way it's called the laundry like a wheelabrator say that to your blue in the face he says and the guy will keep on doing his stupid s*** so one day I decided to try it and he does continuously talk but really we do it everyday
-there's a couple more things this idiot is going to wind down his body until it's worth nothing and try and blame us and we'll have to export him out for real he is a huge dick
-the pseudo empire fleet has taken over around Mars to a degree they have about 1/3 of it almost covered and they're creeping towards the face after a time they'll be there there's a couple groups that are getting up getting ready to go there one of them would be the warlock they have a couple fleets but one of them is Trump 100 billion at Titan and only $150 billion left roughly BJ has about 300 billion it didn't acquire anymore they're just laying about the numbers they're not astronomically different than this and it's not a different order of magnitude but it's roughly the same as the other side Tommy f has about 300 billion and Trump has a total of 300 billion and send 100 billion obviously he's going to have a problem so they tried different techniques and they don't really deploy them and they keep doing it and no strange so it's going out there right now and full cycling rules and things went forward and the other does too and they never give somebody advantage I'm supposed to for the max. And that battle will be deciding factors for a lot of stuff 100 billion is not that much he can't get lost at this point and he will be surrounded by the pseudo anywhere and that's Trump they intend to take the ships and they intend to take bja ships and he is sending a hundred billion to Mars again it'll be left with about really about $400 billion but this time to lose big numbers again the foreigners and the max have slowed down the foreign approach to the ground basis has increased in ferocity and of course the warlock are now going after the pseudo empire ground bases and about 500 and the other 500 are in different areas we suspect they might sue me under attack though by morlock and we mean Macklemore lock it's going on now the eastern hemisphere stash is a caches of trump took a beating and he did not get to any of his robots he lost about 30% of his stash 20% the stuff and 10% robots and he has only about 15% left so he ran by again saying he's the drummer boy so we know what that means and we're interesting and he's a loser and we should cut him down like the retard he is
-speak day for John remillard in the Western hemisphere is going to get his ass handed to him tonight he's going to lose probably 20 to 25% out of 45% to 20% roughly robots is it going to grab guy and his only one a lot of it is the clothes they have tons of stuff and they get tons of robots tax on Trump tons of stuff is down there and he's wearing a lot of people aren't but nobody really get something goes it's very late it has a huge f** and a giant mystery and huge enemy of our son just continuously harangues him and harasses it's worse than Tommy f shoot him truthfully it seems to be more dangerous because an accident happened that was controlled thing we may have had something to do it but this assholes are completely out of control Los er on it and we're going to crush it in this kid it was demented little b**** daughter. We hate this trumps and they're not going to be elected he's indicted two more times January 6th trial is going to come up pretty soon May 5th trial for Mar-A-Lago is coming up that's important now we should put that out there we have a couple more things happening and we'll mention in a moment
Thor Freya
Olympus
Yeah that's fun we're discovering stuff together and they have to investigate the place and take it apart they've done it before
Hera
I did a lot of the building and construction and I do understand that they will probably convict him and to be able to dismantle the building and that's the max what we say is go ahead and convict him it's not ours and there's not much you can do the guy's a piece of s*** on your side he's a piece of s*** on our side and it's Trump and there's nothing you can do except get rid of them so effigy or not who gives a s*** his effigy for you too cuz he's a Mac and he's a trump card and they said yeah that's kind of true. And he doesn't represent the corners but he does less stuff to do and he's not really a Mac so and they're not sure he's born in sleepy hollow she got three strikes against that wimp people going to use it tonight so yeah they have a tendency to victim of crimes put them away get them out in a way and take the building and relocate it storage or restored in this case they would be removing all of the antiquity items in woodwork everything would come out except the frame and that's what they do we're doing it too and we have to be there some format and they keep doing it

it does seem pretty hopeless these days, especially because the 60s and to an extent the 70s at least in America, when you look back on it I obviously wasn't there at the time, seemed like "omg there's so many people they really want to change things! we're going to have a new society!" etc. I mean if things were going to change this is when it would have happened. and nothing changed at all, things got much much worse as time went on. everyone is just a complete coward. and you look at things today and it's even more bleak. no one is challenging anything in a serious way, it's all just whining and we go on with our lives. back then you'd have a guy being like "we need a black ethnostate in america" and he'd have an army of black guys backing him up and white guys saying "hm how very interesting" now you can't say anything about anything because youll get banned off fucking tik tok. and even as with something like communism among young people, very popular, it goes nowhere, no one is willing to die for it. it's very depressing. I mean serious revolutionary ideas, there's nothing. even communists are often wise enough to recognize that the easiest and most effective path is reform and not revolution. but they don't really believe any of that stuff anyways. it's so depressing.
alternatively I see a lot of people engaging in this, you know, internal revolution. I mean controlling as much as they can their own lives, changing their internal lives while participating in the system, riding the tiger, and I don't think this is bad at all, but it's just depressing how resigned to defeat everyone is. not to mention that this is ultimate liberal individualism which is completely in line with the system.
I think in one way it can be blamed on technology, I mean it is very easy to find ways to occupy time these days, while in the past maybe you'd just get so cooped up and agitated you'd form a militia or whatever. also, I don't mean this in a conspiracy theory way but in a very literal way, mind control is very very simple and very real. if you feed people certain things over and over again they'll believe it. and it doesn't have to be direct, even what isn't said, what's implied. when you have someone sitting in front of a screen their entire life, who's life and worldview is informed by the screen, if you control the screen you control everything about this person. how s/he thinks and feels and acts and how this person responds to any given situation. it's very frightening. Wikipedia articles are great because it's always pure propaganda thinly veiled with this "objectivity" charade. look at what is not said. anyways. it's all mind control really.

Omg your AU is amazing!!! Is it ok if I ask some questions about it?
If so here they are otherwise just vibe past:
1.Did the Batch happen to see/hear about the execution?
How did they react?
How do they feel?
2.Will there be a time where he and the Batch meet up/run into each other?
Does he get vague memories/headaches or does he just think these people are weird?
Do they even fully recognize that it’s him or do they go ‘you look a lot like our dead brother’?
3. Does he fully know who he was before?
Does he know he was up for execution? If so, does he know for what and why?
Does he feel content in this new life? Any friends of note?
Anyways loving it and super curious if you choose to build on it!!!
Oh my goodness, that's quite a few questions! Thank you!
Did the Batch happen to see/hear about the execution? How did they react/feel?
Yes. Tech found the live feed while they were resting after another job from Cid.
At first he didn't realize what it was because he was busy with something or another, but as soon as he saw Crosshair on the screen and heard the words "execution for treason" in Rampart's speech, he panicked and went to Hunter. Unfortunately they all bore witness to the "kill shot". There wasn't even time to cover Omega's eyes.
Let's just say Cid had to close shop early because she suddenly had five distraught and guilt-ridden clones to deal with... They all blame themselves for making the wrong choice and leaving Crosshair behind again.
Will there be a time where he and the Batch meet up/run into each other? Does he get vague memories/headaches or does he just think these people are weird? Do they even fully recognize him that it's him or do they go 'you look like our dead brother?'
Funnily enough, they cross paths multiple times. They just never really see each other.
You know when there's this really emotional moment in a show or story, where two protagonists who've been separated by unfortunate circumstances get really close to reuniting again, but they unfortunately still choose paths that lead them further astray from one another? And you're there just hoping for the slim chance that they'll look back and see the other?
That's the great majority of what goes on in the AU. They're always an arm's length away, but never quite meet when you're hoping they do.
Crosshair will eventually find his brothers again. But it'll take a while. By then he'll have grown up a bit character wise, and regained a few of his memories.
He does get weird feelings and headaches when he hears key words, like "hunting", "wrecking" "technology", "echoes", "omega", "marauder" and "havoc".
When he named Lula he also had a weird sense of deja vu...
Does he fully know who he was before? Does he know he was up for execution? If so, does he know for what and why? Does he feel content in this new life? Any friends of note?
No, he doesn't know who he was. He did find out from the sympathizer and the smuggler crew that he was a botched execution, so he assumes he must have been an enemy of the Empire.
While both of his benefactors know what he was "executed" for, they have opted not to tell him. They didn't think he was ready to know during his recovery period, and would rather he piece it back together alongside his memories.
A few members of the crew were displeased with this decision, especially the onboard medics, but there's no arguing with a mercenary and a ornery engineer.
At first Crosshair wasn't happy about waking up with no memories, slurring words heavily, and having difficulty walking or holding things. He was pretty miserable because he just didn't know who he was, why he was hurt so badly, or why he kept having odd nightmares/dreams where an angry voice told him to follow orders he couldn't even remember...
But the more he progressed in his healing, the more time he had to reflect on a few things and refine his motor skills, the more he grew to find he didn't mind the hand he got delt. He suddenly had time to find things to keep himself preoccupied, be it discover activities he liked, snacks he found tasty, music he didn't mind listening to, or even just find enjoyment in the company of the crew and Lula, the tooka he befriended...
He's certainly endeared himself to the crew, and a few people they've worked with along the way. Crosshair isn't inherently social by default, but these people understand him in a way that feels kinda safe. Like he's always belonged in a family.

Technology is either really advanced in one side, holographic device of any kind, not the usual computers with screens, everything digital is touch and 3D.lets say you're looking at a photo, you can either walk around it and look at their back, and at the photographer or what they were looking at, or you can turn the photo while standing still, maybe you can't just stand up and walk behind. Same for short videos, but that's mostly used for sending personal messages such as congratulations and things. But really, all that technological side? It's high. Maps are similar. A 3D Google maps, some intelligence bureaus use a modified version to keep track of their agents or enemies and, if it's a shady one, also people too.
Public transportation is mostly trains or public kinds, nothing private. You wanna go private? You walk. Trains travel partially underground because some places are both not so friendly and physically dangerous (like Vicenza for radiations levels), driven remotely and with minimum human personnel, mostly guards.
On the other hand, weapons didn't advance. Instead or. Eople prefer sword and knives and close combat weapons, sometimes gun but nothing futuristic as everything else. It's the only thing they actually learned from the dodmsaster of the war and the nuclear reactors, they trust better what they can hold and control themselves.
Ben has discordant ideas sometimes, he loves mercutio a lot but that hate/antipathy towered tybalt makes ben pretty angry, though that's because he knows him better then them so he can read through his actions...
Elsinore is pretty much... A meadow, no one gets in and no one gets out (so I ruled out the whole French student thing for laertes. He probably studies in Paris, but from Elsinore. Same for horatio's origins and him not being a Dane, before/during the war his ancestors lived/worked in Elsinore, and there they remained, but he, and others, points out he's not from there.
Mercutio deserved a punch in that moment, I agree. But, no, escalus knows the stories but has not proof of its actual existance and they want to keep it that way... Also, the train they'll use to get to Elsinore start the ride in lost Verona, so both romeo and mercutio after that have to believe him. That's because the normal train is morw controlled, they would ask where you go, for what reason, if you have an authorization and all, from lost Verona you pay and get on it without question. They value secrecy a lot more than outside, if someone want to leave the city and absolutely needs a train, which mean they need to travel far, it's their own business why they go where. But it's also less safe in term of... People.
Tender tycutio is always good, it's so painful to write them fight and generally not getting along, babies... Sure, they all we'll get closer after that, but for now mercutio is dead set on capulets are bad, romeo a bit less, but it's Romeo... He'd try to befriend a wild animal as it tries to eat his arm... 😂 ("puppy!!" "romeo! Get the fuck away of that Hell Spawn!" "he looks hungry..." "yes! That's why you have to get away for fuck's sake!")
Mercutio blames him because he has the map so, technically he should know of the force field, except there's no actual position for it cause they don't know exactly where it starts. There's a moment of the day during which the shield is weaker, though never deactivated, and could be kind of seen if your close to the sensors. Cause it needs to, like... Redistribute the energy, so it takes a while. (animals that bump into it force the shield to have a... Peak of energy in that point, enhanced defense in some way. Ben had been kind of lucky cause when he hit it it was during the re-powering so it couldn't bring more energy there... And so he survives without much problems... But he gives them quite a scare...
The thing... I.. Actually don't know yet what it is... 😅😅
A couple of snippets as I worldbuild…
And a little bit of troubles for both teams~ but what’s new, in truth?
