hi, this is a very random ask but it's currently 2:44 in the morning where i'm at and i've been scrolling through your blog and i just...i'm so in awe of your connection to pathologic! hard to explain rly, but the game, the world and the characters of patho mean so much to me but i've had a hard time ~understanding~ or ig? connecting? to it the ways others do, it always feels like everybody else just inherently "gets it" and i do not. despite finishing the first game, and knowing a lot of info!

i'm not really sure where i'm going with this, but do you think this sounds logical? i guess everybody has their own unique connection to the world and the game, and so it's hard to compare...i do feel passionate about it, i really really do, looking through your blog makes me smile and i think your thoughts and renditions of patho stuff might be my favourite from what i've seen so far! especially the herb brides. LOVE the herb brides. i just feel a bit lost in the sauce i think...almost like i'm incapable of forming thoughts as philosophical, eloquent and well-made as others or that i've got it all wrong. have you felt this way, in your Pathologic Journey Of Discovery?

now to the meat (lol!) of the question... it sounds perfectly logical. it of course does. pathologic (especially classic hd) is... dense and kinda burly of a narrative, the type which Doesn't Leave You Indifferent regardless if it's in a Good Way or in a Bad Way. it's something different (again, esp. p1) than most videogame narratives and experiences we're used to, especially in this day and age. it's this denseness this burliness which i think make people think They Need to make like... essays and shakespeare plays about this game - and some of us do, and it goes craaazy - but i'll tell you what. i don't think one needs to. and you know what? cos it's a game. the team behind it gave it this shape, this form, specifically, because it's my belief as someone who Makes Shit that they found it to be the best vector of it. the thinking, the thought, the essays, the eloquence, the philosophical questions, they all planted it in the game. they planted it in this big pixel gardens. and by releasing it, they wanted you to see that garden. other people will crouch down and pick apart what kinda flowers those are, and what they mean in x or y language. they'll analyze the composition of the soil. and some people will see the worms in the humus and be like damn that's a healthy soil. to me it comes back to what i had said to someone a whiiile back who sounded like they were quite insecure about not being able to make art or write fics for fandoms: you don't gotta. the devs made a Game, they didn't sent out a questionnaire, or write on a blackboard "WHAT DOES THIS MEAN. you have 4hrs. counts for 70% of the final grade". playin a narrative game is, typically, an alone experience. many people who are Changed by games do not write essays or deep philosophical pamphlets about it. many of us in the fandom do because it called to us it spoke to us it this or that, but there is no One Way to walk the garden the devs have planted. and they planted it so others could smell the flowers.

maybe sharing my personal Journey with patho will like Shine Light on why i'm The Way I Am about it: 1) completely silly, but i found it while i was going through my last exam to earn my bachelor's degree. here's one. not everyone has found this game while gettin their BA. 2) we've had architects in my family. i am attached to architecture as a subject, as an art, as a way to understand the world. i am aware of the way architecture shapes something, for the better and the worse. but most importantly, the connection, more than Intellectual, is very, very personal and like. my feefees-based. 3) my birthtown also has its own legends with A Bull! the game plays on that for me, the fact that It's Just Like Mine FR! i also Me Personally espouse a. goddess-earth centered type of spirituality so the mother boddho/living earth/spiritual conducts that are the Herb Brides it all felt. almost familiar to me. 4) patho, in narrative, speaks of art, and of creation. this speaks directly to me as an artist, a writer, a mfer who Makes Shit. 5) i've always been very. in-my-head right. just me and the thoughts marinating. been like this since as far as i can remember. brewing and boiling thoughts in my skull comes naturally to me, because my neurons are Trained To That. i'm also very much like. 🤓🤓 right. i'm a huge fan of accumulating Knowledge, sometimes even just Base Level, for fun. pulling threads between that Knowledge like that one Pepe Silvia IASIP bit is what my brain has been trained to do. and darling i love it here (mostly). Writing About Shit is what i DO. Drawing About Shit is what i DO. 5.5) i been to art school, and a huge part of the experience here was puking like guts-brewed art but being able to have a reasoned, reasonable Discussion about it, to be able to explain, to dissect, to see the made piece from other angles. i found patho at the end of that art school time, so i had gotten the habit, the want, maybe even the need to do that, to dissect others' art in order to understand mine better (or, alternatively, to cope with the fact that sometimes i Couldn't explain it) 6) the game(s) has/ve Grief as a theme (not the character, the Feefee). it's especially potent in p2. don't want to get too #personal but i have intimate knowledge of grief, and seeing characters dealing through it, and it being anchored in a narrative, is both interesting to me intellectually but also. in-my-feefees-ly. 7) this one is esp. p1 related but that one truly tickles like. Me Bones. not one second of that game have i felt lost, overwhelmed by the text, by the implication of the text (i have felt overwhelmed from Game Mechanics, but not the Dialogue/Lore itself) because as verbose as weird as cryptic as she is she made complete and utter sense to me. i have a <3 funny brain <3 and it's full of. nonsenses, incoherent, racing or twisting thought trains, flights of ideas, faulty/nonsensical connections. a lot of my writing comes from that, which i then polish for reading (as i often cannot. even reread what i wrote when that happens, thankfully with life being slower than it was it happens less). p1 complicated and verbose and slithering and snaking ways of telling you shit of giving you information of describing people and relationships felt like speaking to something that truly, truly understood me.

all of those ^ to say that My Experience of pathologic is mine. no one can have the same. and someone else's experience of pathologic will be Theirs, and i cannot have it. and your experience of pathologic is yours, and no one, neither me or anyone else, can have it the same as you do. we all, as Gamers(tm), come to the game with baggage, with different experiences, with different intellectual abilities, with different narrative comprehensions shaped by our education, our culture, our preferences, with different Desires as to what we feel a game Should Be to us, should make us feel, different desires as to how we want to experience the game.

it may feel like everybody "gets it", but you can't know how much work someone puts into wording their thoughts about the game, how much time they spend tuning their vision of it, how long they might have spent in-game being like What the Fuck. What the Fuck. What the Fuck. What the Fuck. i think patho deserves a time of Digestion. where you take it all in and your body&mind, that has experienced the game as a narrative and a play, breaks into very thin pieces the game(s) and it runs through you. it might take weeks, months. years. you might never be able to feel the game Feed You in the way you feel like it feeds some people, but i don't think that's a... necessary experience for you to enjoy the game, to find it deeply important to you. i've played, or watched other people play, many, many games that i consider important to me. that were there at a time in my life where it was good that they were, or that i thoroughly and deeply enjoyed, but that didn't Change Me like patho did, and as i've said, patho Changed Me because it ticked So Many Boxes for me. and no two people will have the same Boxes for this game to tick.

i repeat it over and over, but pathologic is a game about perspective and interpretations At Its Core. within the narrative. its role-playing experiences mean you can enter this world, but also that you can exit it. are there Objectively Wrong ways to think about things in this game? oh sure. yeah sure. are there interpretations that stem from culture/background/preconceived notions/stereotypes and are out of character, out of narrative, or go against relatively transparent bits of characterization or lore? also yes. most are benign, really. but most of the time... you're just watching another plane of the shape.

yeah, i've used this analogy before: we're all looking at the same polyhedron (in the sense of "a three-dimensional shape with flat polygonal faces, straight edges and sharp corners or vertices"), with its finite-but-huge number of planes, edges and corners. no two people are looking at the exact same planes, edges and corners. we might be looking at some together, but we're never seeing the same colors from the other planes reflect on them, the same light of the sun hitting the edges or the undersides. we're not all crawling in the same crevices, or following the same peaks. but we're all lookin at the same shape.

I know it's controversial but I love that little grain of KimChay closure they've given us. He's 19 - I like to imagine he takes a few years to grow up and learn to be himself before they collide again, and take it from there.

THERE IT IS. I was waiting (after having watched the clips on youtube for daaaaays). This is devastatingly beautiful for me (again, for reason I can't explain myself). It's not even the fact that it's in English - by now I've become so used to the Thai version that the sounds are wrong. But omg the scenery and setting. The piano, the build-up, the choir and Jeff just releasing it. I honestly don't know why this man isn't world wide famous yet (yes I will die on this hill). God I ship her and Sam, and I’d like to take this opportunity to remind you that I don’t ship him w anyone. Liking this ep a lot, every little side plot. Nice. And Eileen is back and I know it won’t last but like, that was awesome.

They're always solving problems like Jason Mendoza. In-Dean-angry-voice: “Anytime I had a problem and I threw a Molotov cocktail, boom! Right away, I had a different problem.” Rowena! And Sam! No!

15:5 Proverbs 17:3 - Listen, spn, it’s your last season and if you like just wanna stop writing and casting women completely rn i won't stop you or hold it against you (also why are these ladies identical?). We’ve had a terrible run but lets just let bygones be bygones.

15:8 Our father, who aren’t in heaven - Gosh, having Eileen in the show is painful, I’m just constantly expecting a piano to fall on her head. *Ugh* Sucky-yucky-Chucky. But hey, at least everybody else looks better alongside him. Case and point: I never rly cared that much for Donatello, but it’s great to see him, and Michael’s back, sure is nice to see him too.

15:9 The trap - Ugh. Main plot shit and Sucky-yucky-fucking-Chucky. Fail. Although the flashforward to jan 6th 2021 was a hoot (but probably not meant like one, huh?) Dean’s monologue in purgatory though... gosh. This show would be nothing w/o Jensen Ackles. Omg the kiss! Nice. However, the show at this point has lost the ability to offer any sort of pleasure. Because like Sam, we know which way this will go. They used to have some hedonism working for the characters but now they don’t even have that.

15:20 Carry on - You know what? I’m not gonna make this post longer than it already is talking about the last episode of Supernatural, that has been done better by people w real grievances w the show. The kindest thing you can say about the finale is that it just as well could’ve been jammed into a few extra minutes added to the previous episode.

Mediocre mentions:

Drag me away (from you) - what is this ugly cell interface? The opposite of product placement. Yay! Retro episode! And they got the same actor to play Dean, neato! Dean admitting he had a hard time handling hunting, that always gets me. Woah! That scream effect without reverb was kinda startling. And the camera zooming in on the little porcelain clown even though Sam is nowhere n- oh shit. This was an interesting episode

Inherit the earth - Goooood I hate Chucky. Barefoot Sam is okay though. Digging this soundtrack too. Very un-Supernatural. Nice to meet ya Betty, but I wouldn’t pull up a chair if I were you. Always a fan of the shiteating grin. Jack, stripping god of his power, that’s so hot. And again: kudos to the soundtrack! The Youngbloods and then Jackson freakin’ Browne! And you know, it’s clichéd and kinda vacant, but also kinda nice. I’m cool with the story ending like this. Why did they have to do another one? Supernatural has never known when to quit, and this is the very real backside of this.

Cas launching straight into his dramatic I-will-not-let-you-end-your-own-life-speech when Sam casually mentions he’d like to talk to death in Unity, that angel has seen some things, and he has learned.

Those are some pretty pretty death effects on Jack in Despair/The Truth.

Things that makes you go hmm:

Which of the clowns is this supposed to be in Back and to the Future? Because the one from season 2 was a monster, right? So he would’ve gone to purgatory. You know what? I’m not an expert. I try to not pay too much attention ’cause it makes me funny in the head. But just, y’know, a general objection.

Here’s my deal w death as a looming threat in this show: it holds no weight. And even if it did it has been painted as the ultimate relief, unless you go to hell, these characters know for a fact that there’s a potentially blissful afterlife, so their attitude towards death should be, what? More pragmatic, I think. And it’s partly why Ackles is wasted on this show; That man can deliver a death monologue like it’s nobody’s business, too bad all those words have been rendered meaningless after 15 seasons of this shit!

Summing up:

So, I did not go into or leave this season happy, I knew how it would end and I was sad for everyone the show screwed over (more than it already had). Which really meant that I always had to force myself to watch another episode, knowing what was coming. But I had to see it through. I did, so I’ll give myself a pat on the back and get to work on my own personal selection of episodes that will henceforth represent spn to me. A selection I’ll enjoy all the way through. All in all I think the most frustrating thing about the show is how it insists on taking itself so freakin’ seriously. It has always done horror *and* humor best and this whole heaven and hell aspect has never sat right w me, and in any case they should’ve leaned more on “supernatural” narrative tropes (if you will) getting out of their plot problems, gambled some more and thought a bit more outside genre conventions *especially* in their main arcs, they opened up so many opportunities that they never even used. They could’ve been more like Buffy, or Doctor Who. That said, I’ll always get that spn-itch, and when I do, I’ll be happy to have seen all the episodes so I’ll know which ones to avoid.

Claire: How was the gym with Luke last night

Julie: It was good

Claire: Do you wanna get coffee this morning

Julie: Yes! I need coffee. You know I calculated how much caffeine I had yesterday and it was close to 400 milligrams

Julie: Ok let me grab my wallet

Julie: Oh shit

Julie: My wallet’s not here. I think I lost it

Claire: Oh no!

Julie: I need to look for it fuck

Claire: Ok I’ll help you. Do you think you left it at the gym

Scene 2

*Claire and Julie meet up and head towards the gym*

Claire: Wait, Julie, don’t cross the street. The light is red. I have a fear of people getting hit with cars and stuff

Julie: I think everybody has that fear

Claire: No, mine's serious. I have to go to therapy for it

*The light turns green and Claire and Julie cross the street*

*Once they get to the other side of the street they see their friends John and Karey*

Julie: Oh my god what are you guys doing here

Claire: Yeah I thought you guys moved to the suburbs

Karey: Well yes we’re in Chicago for the day and it snowed last night so it’s a little sloshy so we thought we’d come here

Julie: Oh cool, well what are you guys gonna do today

John: Well we thought we would go to the art museum, get dinner, and then maybe go see a play

Karey: Hamlet at the Johnson Theater

Claire: oh no, don’t see that. We went last and it was so bad

Julie: We literally were like “did they rehearse this beforehand even” because it really did not seem like it

*Karey looks at John*

Claire: We went to a cool jazz club if you guys are interested

*Claire and Julie walk towards the gym and see a line outside*

Julie: What’s going on here

Claire: Yeah wait, I've never this line so fucking long. Or any line for the matter. It’s a gym

Person waiting in line: They’re holding a zumba class with the legendary Anne Houston! There’s only 20 spots but they have a waiting list to get in

Julie: Ok well I don't care about that, I need to see if I left my wallet in there. Do you think I get cut the line

Person waiting in line: No, they're not letting anyone cut

*Claire and Julie wait in line for 30 min*

Julie: Ugh I’m really getting stressed what if someone stole it

Claire: Where do you think you left it

Julie: I think by the weights

Claire: Ok well we’ll check there but also all around

Julie (to the front desk worker): Hi I need to check if I left my wallet here overnight

Front desk worker: Yeah you can look

Julie: ugh what am I going to do

Annie Houston: hey guys is this one your wallets I saw it here when I came in and thought I should hold on to it before anyone else got their hands on it

Julie: Yes that's mine thank you so much

Claire: man, thank god you found it

Gemini: The girl who loves spending time with people, she always loves to discuss about every topic, she knows so much about many things, she's doing great with her grades and she's among the top 5 students in the entire generation. Also, she has PERFECT, sonorous American accent and everybody loves it. She always initiates coffee gatherings but nobody really comes because she's not that much of a leader and her voice is so soft so nobody could really hear when she's talking. She's also a passionate gamer AND in the same time she finds time to maintain her grades and social life

Cancer: That (jock) guy who's the tallest one, he's blonde, buffed-up and he's the definition of a straight white boy. He's childish as fuck and he can become very boring sometimes. Once, my colleagues have shooed him out of the cafeteria because he was bothering them. He also tells so many stupid dad-jokes and laughs at his own jokes, flirts with some professors, has been single since forever (not that he's ugly - he's average looking but he's so much boring sometimes because he doesn't have any real friends and he gets excited about people so he doesn't know WHEN to stop). He literally flirts with every single female human being that he can find and he pushes them all away because he's pushy af. He's also introverted and doesn't really know his way with girls

Leo: That girl who's one of the top students in the generation. She's always smiling, she has the best grades, she always tries to present this "perfect" image of herself. She is very intelligent and she loves reading, she gets drunk like every second day but that doesn't stop her from maintaining her perfect grades. She's very successful and she's a good leader, she knows all the fresh gossip and she always sits in the first row with her best university friend. In fact, she and her best uni friend are hated by everyone because they're just so successful and everyone's jealous of them. She also secretly hates everybody and gossips with her best uni friend. She and her friend have tons of screenshots ready to blackmail people if anyone says anything against them lmao. But everyone (every zodiac sign) in this generation pretends we like each other so...

Virgo: That professor who's VERY detail-oriented and she's a big perfectionist but she can't fix her awful handwriting. She's very successful and she has TONS of potential, she literally KNOWS EVERYTHING about her subjects but sometimes she can really drain us physically and emotionally. She gives us tons of assignments and homework and she always gives us lectures on the most difficult courses. Jfc she behaves like we study in Cambridge / Oxford. But don't get me wrong, she's NOT a bad person. She's actually a VERY good person and at the end of each semester she buys us coffee and tea, she talks with us about our experience with the course and she just wants us to learn some things that we should learn, that's why we perceive her as "difficult" and "problematic"

Libra: That girl who loves hugging, has great communication skills and is a social justice warrior. She thinks that she's everyone's friend and she always tries to criticize everyone's opinion, thinking that she'll seem and sound more intelligent. She also listens to rock and metal, she loves children and she smokes a lot, she's very sensitive and she's very friendly. Once, on the Facebook group of the university, she tried to accuse Pisces of something he didn't do and he literally ruined her in front of all those people, that was one of her biggest mistakes she's ever done in uni because she didn't know that that guy can be pretty evil when someone tries to insult/hurt him. The next day in uni she was on the verge of a mental breakdown because that guy really hurt her with his words, making her look stupid and pretentious, and everybody stopped talking to that guy for like, a month or two

Scorpio: That girl who's late in class 90% of the time, and those 10% she's not present in class. She is very quiet and she doesn't show particular interest in anything. She doesn't have a taste in fashion and style, unlike most Scorpios that I know. She just wants to go home all the time and nobody knows what she's doing in her life, she's so mysterious and she's not a good teamworker because she doesn't really care about her grades

Sagittarius: That girl who can't stop talking and she's always arguing with someone but we all love her. She's very communicative but she's insecure at the same time. She has tons of likes on Facebook and Instagram. She's a VERY open-minded girl, she hates racism, homophobes, nazi scum and racists. She's a really good friend with Leo and Pisces but Capricorn is her bff and her roommate. She has an excellent taste in fashion, style and music and she has S_L_A_Y_I_N_G eyebrows. She is very antisocial and introverted but she has excellent taste for art, film, music and she's like 24/7 on her phone because it's obvious that she can't stand most of us but she's always sweet and supportive when someone approaches her. Sometimes she doesn't want to talk and she just smiles as a response. She's Sagittarius' best friend and roommate and they've became really close friends. She also loves journeys and she's a daydreamer but she's very intelligent. Her grades are not that good, she's not an attention whore and she tries to be "invisible" but she simply can't

Aquarius: That guy with his cockney accent who has insane memory and loves football. He's actually a loner, he's a bit creepy and weird, le loves britpop and indie nd he was one of the best students in the first two years of uni but his grades dropped. He's like, very secretive and he can be pretty arrogant and you just can't sit next to him because he's telling jokes all the time which takes your attention away. He is a loner and once he publicly told us that he used to have cyber sex with his girlfriend because she lived in another country and they've never met in real life (I mean, who tells such things omg Aqua get your shit together). He tries to insult people and he tries to be sarcastic but he can only be sarcastic with the stupid ones. He also thinks that he's a know-it-all and that he's the most intelligent person in the world. He can be really judgmental sometimes and he pushes people away with that

Pisces: That guy who always sits in the first row with his best university friend and is one of the top students in the generation. He's also a model, nerd, gamer, works out and whatnot. He is sweet to everyone and talks to everyone but he can be very sassy at times. He was the one who had a verbal fight with Libra because Libra triggered him and he destroyed her verbally. He's really skinny and dreamy and he has a very deep voice and an excellent taste in fashion and style. His style is kinda dark and he's so aesthetic. He listens to some music that no other people in the world listen to but he also listens to some mainstream music. In fact, he listens to whatever he wants and he doesn't really think about what other people think about him. He tends to roll his eyes a lot and he cares about his physical beauty more than he cares about his love life. He's too egotistic and self-centered and he's extremely picky, which makes him single most of the time.
