On This Day In History . 9 May 1386 . The Treaty of Windsor . . ◼ The Treaty of Windsor is the diplomatic alliance signed between Portugal & England on 9 May 1386 with the Treaty of Windsor & the marriage of King John I of Portugal (House of Aviz) with Philippa of Lancaster, daughter of John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster (son of Edward III of England). . ◼ With the victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota, John I was recognized as the undisputed King of Portugal, putting an end to the interregnum of the 1383–1385 Crisis . ◼ The Treaty of Windsor established a pact of mutual support between the countries. This document is preserved at the Portuguese National Archives. . ◼ Historian Matthew Winsett says, “This treaty has been the cornerstone of both nations’ relations with each other ever since. It was very important throughout history, influencing the participation of the United Kingdom in the Iberian Peninsular War, the UK’s major land contribution to the Napoleonic Wars & the establishment of an Anglo-American base in Portugal. Portugal aided England (& later the UK) in times of need, for example, in the First World War.” . ◼ The most important part of the treaty stated that: . ‘It is cordially agreed that if, in time to come, one of the kings or his heir shall need the support of the other, or his help, & in order to get such assistance applies to his ally in lawful manner, the ally shall be bound to give aid & succour to the other, so far as he is able (without any deceit, fraud, or pretence) to the extent required by the danger to his ally’s realms, lands, domains, & subjects; & he shall be firmly bound by these present alliances to do this.’ . . . #OnThisDayInHistory #ThisDayInHistory #TheYear1386 #OnThisDay ##TheTreatyofWindsor #Treaty #d9may #TreatyofWindsor #England #Portugal #diplomatic #Allies #plantagenet #plantagenets #houseofplantagenet #Heritage #RoyalHistory #EnglishMonarchy #History #KingofPortugal #JohnofGaunt #DukeofLancaster #Historic #Alliance #BritishMonarchy #PhilippaofLancaster (at Windsor, Berkshire) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_-0irSD8yy/?igshid=pgu8lcxnbh7l

On This Day In Royal History . 9 August 1386 . King Henry V was born . ◼ Henry was born in the tower above the gatehouse of Monmouth Castle, Monmouth, Principality of Wales (and for that reason was sometimes called Henry of Monmouth). He was the son of 20-year-old Henry of Bolingbroke (later Henry IV of England), & 16-year-old Mary de Bohun. . ◼ He was also the grandson of the influential John of Gaunt & great-grandson of Edward III of England. At the time of his birth, Richard II of England, his cousin once removed, was king. As he was not close to the line of succession to the throne, Henry’s date of birth was not officially documented. His grandfather, John of Gaunt, was the guardian of the king at that time. . About Henry V; . ◼ Henry V,  was King of England from 1413 until his death at the age of 36 in 1422. He was the second English monarch who came from the House of Lancaster. . ◼ Henry gained military experience fighting the Welsh during the revolt of Owain Glyndŵr, & against the powerful aristocratic Percys of Northumberland at the Battle of Shrewsbury. . ◼ It was there that the sixteen-year-old prince was almost killed by an arrow that became stuck in his face. An ordinary soldier might have died from such a wound, but Henry had the benefit of the best possible care. Over a period of several days, John Bradmore, the royal physician, treated the wound with honey to act as an antiseptic, crafted a tool to screw into the broken arrow shaft & thus extract the arrow without doing further damage, & then flushed the wound with alcohol. The operation was successful, but it left Henry with permanent scars, evidence of his experience in battle. .
