On This Day In Royal History . 9 August 1386 . King Henry V was born . ◼ Henry was born in the tower above the gatehouse of Monmouth Castle, Monmouth, Principality of Wales (and for that reason was sometimes called Henry of Monmouth). He was the son of 20-year-old Henry of Bolingbroke (later Henry IV of England), & 16-year-old Mary de Bohun. . ◼ He was also the grandson of the influential John of Gaunt & great-grandson of Edward III of England. At the time of his birth, Richard II of England, his cousin once removed, was king. As he was not close to the line of succession to the throne, Henry’s date of birth was not officially documented. His grandfather, John of Gaunt, was the guardian of the king at that time. . About Henry V; . ◼ Henry V,  was King of England from 1413 until his death at the age of 36 in 1422. He was the second English monarch who came from the House of Lancaster. . ◼ Henry gained military experience fighting the Welsh during the revolt of Owain Glyndŵr, & against the powerful aristocratic Percys of Northumberland at the Battle of Shrewsbury. . ◼ It was there that the sixteen-year-old prince was almost killed by an arrow that became stuck in his face. An ordinary soldier might have died from such a wound, but Henry had the benefit of the best possible care. Over a period of several days, John Bradmore, the royal physician, treated the wound with honey to act as an antiseptic, crafted a tool to screw into the broken arrow shaft & thus extract the arrow without doing further damage, & then flushed the wound with alcohol. The operation was successful, but it left Henry with permanent scars, evidence of his experience in battle. . His complexion was ruddy, the face lean with a prominent & pointed nose. Depending on his mood, his eyes “flashed from the mildness of a dove’s to the brilliance of a lion’s” . . . #Onthisdayinhistory #thisdayinhistory #theyear1386 #d9Aug #KingHenryV #HenryVofEngland #HenryV #HouseofLancaster #History #EnglishHistory #otd #EnglishMonarchy #OnThisDay #BritishMonarchy #Heritage #King #Plantagenet #England #Plantagenets #historic #Monmouth #warrior #Kinghenry #Stgeorge #medieval #Medievaltimes #Lancastrian #RoyalHistory #medievalhistory #WarriorKing #EnglishHistory (at Monmouth) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDqoFVKDgml/?igshid=1j7nciny43j8n

On This Day In History . 9 August 1902 . King Edward VII & Alexandra of Denmark were crowned King and Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. . . ◼ When Queen Victoria died on 22 January 1901, Edward became King of the United Kingdom, Emperor of India &, in an innovation, King of the British Dominions. He chose to reign under the name Edward VII, instead of Albert Edward the name his mother had intended for him to use declaring that he did not wish to "undervalue the name of Albert" & diminish the status of his father with whom the "name should stand alone" . ◼ Edward's coronation had originally been scheduled for 26 June, but two days before on 24 June, he was diagnosed with appendicitis. Appendicitis was generally not treated operatively & carried a high mortality rate, but developments in anaesthesia & antisepsis in the preceding 50 years made life-saving surgery possible. Sir Frederick Treves (famous for caring for John Merrick, 'The Elephant man'), with the support of Lord Lister, performed a then-radical operation of draining a pint of pus from the infected abscess through a small incision (through 4½ inch thickness of belly fat & abdomen wall); this outcome showed thankfully that the cause was not cancer. . ◼ The next day, Edward was sitting up in bed, smoking a cigar. Two weeks later, it was announced that the King was out of danger. Treves was honoured with a baronetcy (which Edward had arranged before the operation) & appendix surgery entered the medical mainstream. . ◼ Edward & Alexandra were crowned together at Westminster Abbey on 9 August 1902, Edward by the 80-year-old Archbishop of Canterbury, Frederick Temple, who died only four months later. Alexandra by the Archbishop of York, William Dalrymple Maclagan. . . . #Onthisdayinhistory #thisdayinhistory #Theyear1902 #Coronation #EdwardVII #KingEdwardVII #VintagePhoto #VintagePhotography #Heritage #Britain #UK #WestminsterAbbey #Westminster #Royalhistory #Royalcollection #Historic #onthisday #Kingandqueen #Instahistory #HouseofSaxeCoburgandGotha #AlexandraofDenmark #QueenAlexandra #History #BritishMonarchy #d9aug .
