The Coronation Ceremony of the British Monarchy
The coronation ceremony of the British monarchy as we know it today involves many elements that have been a part of the pageantry ever since the 11th century. Such features of the ceremony carried out in Westminster Abbey since 1066 have been maintained by successive monarchs right down to Queen Elizabeth II (r. 1952-2022) and her coronation on 2 June 1953, as all rulers were keen to show they were part of a long-standing tradition.

On This Day In History . 25 October 1415 . Henry V gained his greatest victory at the Battle of Agincourt . The Battle of Agincourt was a major English victory in the Hundred Years’ War. It took place on 25 October 1415 (Saint Crispin’s Day) in the County of Saint-Pol, Artois, some 40 km south of Calais (now Azincourt in northern France). . ◼ England’s unexpected victory at Agincourt against a numerically superior French army boosted English morale & prestige, crippled France, & started a new period in the war during which the English began enjoying great military successes. . 👑 King Henry V of England led his troops into battle & participated in hand-to-hand fighting. . ◼ The battle is notable for the use of the English longbow in very large numbers, with the English & Welsh archers making up nearly 80 percent of Henry’s army. The devastation of the French cavalry at their hands signaled the decline of cavalry & the increasing dominance of ranged weapons on the battlefield. . ◼ Agincourt is one of England’s most celebrated victories & was one of the most important English triumphs in the Hundred Years’ War, along with the Battle of Crécy (1346) & Battle of Poitiers (1356). It forms the centrepiece of the play Henry V by William Shakespeare. . 📖 Read my full story of the Battle with biography of Henry V, where you can also watch clips of Shakespeare’s play, by Sir Laurence Olivier in 1944 & Kenneth Branagh in the 1989 version. . . . #onthisdayinhistory #thisdayinhistory #theyear1415 #d25oct #BattleofAgincourt #HundredYearsWar #History #Historic #HenryV #HenryVofEngland #KingHenryV #England #France #SaintCrispinsDay #EnglishHistory #EnglishMonarchy #instahistory #historyfacts #Thebritishmonarchy #Britishmonarchy #HouseofLancaster #HouseofPlantagenet #otd (at Azincourt) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGxuvHzDNXs/?igshid=boli0pz7tlr8

On This Day In Royal History . 31 August 1422 . King Henry V of England dies of dysentery while in France. His son, Henry VI becomes King of England at the age of 9 months. . . 👑 Henry V died suddenly on 31 August 1422 at the Château de Vincennes, Vincennes, Kingdom of France, apparently from dysentery, perhaps toxic megacolon, which he had contracted during the siege of Meaux. He was 35 years old. . ◼ Shortly before his death, Henry V named his brother John of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Bedford, regent of France in the name of his son Henry VI of England, then only a few months old. . ◼ Henry V did not live to be crowned King of France himself, as he might confidently have expected after the Treaty of Troyes, because ironically, the sickly Charles VI, to whom he had been named heir, survived him by two months. . ◼ Henry’s comrade-in-arms and Lord Steward John Sutton, 1st Baron Dudley brought the body of King Henry home to England and bore the royal standard at his funeral. A contemporary French chronicler, Enguerrand de Monstrelet, remarked that from the time that Catherine arrived at Dover ‘she was received as if she had been an angel of God.’ . ◼ Catherine gave birth to a son named Henry (later King Henry VI of England) on 6 December 1421 at Windsor. Her husband never saw their child. During the siege of Meaux, he became sick with dysentery & died on 31 August 1422, just before his 36th birthday. . ◼ Catherine was not quite 21 & was left a queen dowager. Charles VI died a couple of months after Henry V, making the young Henry VI king of England & English-occupied northern France. On This Day In Royal History . 9 August 1386 . King Henry V was born . ◼ Henry was born in the tower above the gatehouse of Monmouth Castle, Monmouth, Principality of Wales (and for that reason was sometimes called Henry of Monmouth). He was the son of 20-year-old Henry of Bolingbroke (later Henry IV of England), & 16-year-old Mary de Bohun. . ◼ He was also the grandson of the influential John of Gaunt & great-grandson of Edward III of England. At the time of his birth, Richard II of England, his cousin once removed, was king. As he was not close to the line of succession to the throne, Henry’s date of birth was not officially documented. His grandfather, John of Gaunt, was the guardian of the king at that time. . About Henry V; . ◼ Henry V,  was King of England from 1413 until his death at the age of 36 in 1422. He was the second English monarch who came from the House of Lancaster. . ◼ Henry gained military experience fighting the Welsh during the revolt of Owain Glyndŵr, & against the powerful aristocratic Percys of Northumberland at the Battle of Shrewsbury. . ◼ It was there that the sixteen-year-old prince was almost killed by an arrow that became stuck in his face. An ordinary soldier might have died from such a wound, but Henry had the benefit of the best possible care. Over a period of several days, John Bradmore, the royal physician, treated the wound with honey to act as an antiseptic, crafted a tool to screw into the broken arrow shaft & thus extract the arrow without doing further damage, & then flushed the wound with alcohol. The operation was successful, but it left Henry with permanent scars, evidence of his experience in battle. .
