G'morning all! Its nice to get back things,. Theres been some roadblocks with med shortages and life, and also with the material for these recipes. So far we've covered a lot of pastries, not because theyre mentioned more often in the series, but because being mentioned lends them more specificity in flavor than things like gravy, peas, or various meats. The latter can be prepped, seasoned, and served in so many different ways that it feels harder to make them 'faithfully' because a packet of instant potato mash is just as faithful as a pot of buttered potato mash. Baked goods tend towards 1, maybe 2, 'base' recipes that get altered and added to. 

 Today, we'll be making Beorn's Honey Cakes! A dish from one of my partners favorite characters- a delectable little treat befitting the… warm personality of the character.

SO, “what goes in to Beorn's Honey Cakes?” YOU MIGHT ASKSimple stuff! Simple sweet stuff!

All-purpose flour

Baking powder

Salt

Ground nutmeg

Unsalted butter

Whole milk

2 eggs

Honey

Vanilla extract

The veins of honey cakes ancestry can be traced back to any moment where people began baking bread. Honey is a natural preservative, and sweeter still on its lonesome.

AND, “what does Beorn's Honey Cakes taste like?” YOU MIGHT ASKLike your aching muscles repairing themselves

Tastes like a honey graham cracker

But the texture is softer, wetter- somewhat like banana bread

Oh, and this will make your house smell So So Good

If you can resist the temptation of eating them immediately, they taste even richer the day after baking

Would pair well with milk green tea

Would also pair well with fresh orange slices (or those chocolate 'orange slices' candy)

Genuinely don't forget to flip them upside down when they go to bake the second time, not sure what it is but i was curious and did a test where i flipped half of the batch upside down and kept the other half of the batch right-side up like they cooked in the muffin tin. The ones i flipped upside down universally had a more consistent texture and the honey was able to permeate further.

From start to finish this recipe takes about an hour of work, give or take some negligible time for prep.

The batter is perhaps the babybird of all cake batters. The gloopy, protruding crumbs of butter, not unlike a squabs beady pupils visibly dark under its skin, break up the mass of sickly smooth and reassuringly sweet-smelling oak-colored liquid. You can feel the confusion of bees outside your home, wondering if this your attempt at making royal jelly.

Just like a babybird, it becomes more than the sum of its parts. Layer on that honey drizzle, layer it on thick, theres no risk of drowning subtle flavors. Its crisp edges will keep its form, springy and warm, inviting you as if you're not the one who crafted it (food you didn't cook always tastes better). The bees are sooooooooooooooo jealous of your opposable thumbs and muscular strength.

If you dont have eggs you could try substituting with apple mash. I can't vouch for it in this recipe but replacing eggs with mashed up apples for pancakes gives it adds a nice fruity flavor without changing the texture, and in theory should work here as well.

I give this recipe a solid 10/10 (with 1 being food that makes one physically sick and 10 being food that gives one a lust for life again.) 

🐁 ORIGINAL RESIPPY TEXT BELOW 🐁

Ingredients:

270 grams all-purpose flour

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp freshly ground nutmeg

1 stick unsalted butter

160 grams milk

2 eggs

110 grams your favorite honey

1 tsp vanilla extract

Muffin tray and parchment paper

Method:

Preheat oven to 350f

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.

 Add the butter and rub it into the flour with your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. 

In a small bowl beat the eggs until just combined. Pour in milk and then vanilla extract while stirring.  Keep stirring vigorously while slowly pouring in honey.

Stir until the mixture is consistent in color.

Pour the liquids over the dry mixture and stir until just combined.

Pour the batter into a greased muffin tray, don't use any muffin paper/lining/cups.

Bake for 16 minutes, or until they reach their full height.

Carefully remove from the muffin pan and place the muffins upside down on a parchment lined tray.

Using a silicone pastry brush, generously cover the tops of the cakes with honey. Allow to sit for about 5 minutes to let the honey soak into the cakes.

Bake for an additional 8-10 minutes, or until the cakes are golden brown.

Remove from the oven and allow to cool.

avoiding lineart and going straight in with color and shaping means i go through what i fondly refer to as a "gloopy" stage of each drawing and the funniest part to me is starting to dress the gloopy stage in signature blorbo looks and be like ah yes. that is them. theyre gloopy!!! but that's them!!!

part 1 of 3 in a lil set of astralum types, regular ol Stars! some notes on these thangs: - All astralum have a big ol hole through their back and chest for their heart to be visible, and occasionally big gloopy wings to come from, stars will have rounded holes burnt by the heat of their hearts - this one has a very simple example of their sorta deposits, theyre always symmetrical to a degree and formed of elements or some other stone/gem, their claws and teeth will be made of the same stuff!

spiky/drippy speech bubbles. theyre just cool and i love them so much

making things intentionally look bad so they draw the eye to them, which i feel can really show emotion.

theres inklings/octolings that are fucked up and cant transform "correctly" into either form and exist in a weird inbetween form thats super unstable and inconsistent (and very gloopy) they can have kid forms with practice but not only will they be usually chewed up in some manner (like too many fingers on one hand, or a beak that hasnt developed into chitinous teeth, or one limb that will just be a tentacle), but theyre often impossible to maintain for extended periods of time; for whatever reason its a strain on their bodies while normal individuals dont experience such things theyre often runty and sickly. theres probably psas in-universe that remind cephalopod parents to monitor their kids' developmental milestones because a hallmark of a child being undercooked is them not maturing past their baby squid/octopus stage beyond growing in size. in extreme cases hormone therapy is necessary to remedy this popular media refers to them as halflings. a hot button issue is the uptick in inklings/octolings turning out to be halflings in recent times; they used to be a fringe medical concern whereas nowadays theyre common in non-urban areas. scientists are in constant debate about what is causing the uptick and why also their ink is bizarrely viscous and somewhat gritty, leading some researchers to speculate that whatevers affecting ink quality is linked to their physiological problems. this is also why turf war involving them is often described as "yucky"

OK LIKE . IN HINDSIGHT I REALISE THIS QUESTION IS TOO BROAD TO GET ME GOING CUZ I LIKE A LOT OF LORE (more specific questions are easier for me to ramble about) but i think. my favorite lore to TELL people about is sashimori's origin story cuz its so FUNNY to me.

its HEAVILY implied they're pearls former band, cuz pearl used to be in a metal band (also bring back pearls piercings forreal. shes so cute with them!!!!). and sashimori kicked out their lead singer cuz they were an asshole... and they just did instrumental stuff for a while but then the leader of the band, taichi sawaberu, Who Is A Renowned Guitarist Despite Being An Eel(?) With No Fingers, was like okay we need vocals actually. so they made a post on social media looking for vocals and there was this one response of this guy. and theyre like hell no this is a literal 10 year old kid. and then they listened and it was this like amazing like this lil guy basically vocaloid producer ytpmv style remixes HUMAN vocals from old records he finds. and like. they were so impressed they were like ok guess dj baby is gonna be our vocals!!!! and they were a hit!! and this baby is named Paul. hes so small hes still all gloopy. also as of splat 3 he should be 15 and like...that means he looks more like the player characters which is WEIRD to think about. theres also art of him beating fuka bottom who is (presumably) a fully grown shark at chess....theres more but like. Yeagh. so funny to me

hi, slime here !! ok so when i was a wee slime in the ground i was like super intrigued by humans and society n stuff n id sneak up near the surface to watch em n the rest of the colony was like "why do u care abt them theyre boring and insignificant" and i was like "no but theyre interesting" n i kept going out to watch them even tho ppl like judged me for it n eventually i was like "u kno what fuck it im leaving" n went up to the surface n watched from there all the time. sometime a bit before the events of the server i think. at some point i decide to try n start making my form look more human, n then quackity from las nevadas finds me and from there were at the present. now for a slime biology lesson! while in full goop form we can change the shape of our body to like basically whatever bc it is just slime. we generally default to like a sorta cube shape but we can be whatever. so u kno i make myself look just kinda like. default human at first (probably slightly modeled after tommy bc i did watch him a lot) but as i started to spend time around ppl in las nevadas i sorta picked up traits inspired by them (gloopy ear wings n (fake) scar over eye from quackity las nevadas, mammal-like nose n mouth from fundy lmanburg, lil antennae from purpled ufo, etc) n tho i eventually moved on from there i was kinda stuck w that form bc i gloopmorphosized during the las nevadas days. gloopmorphosis is a process some slimes choose to go through where they choose one form to maintain (almost always mimicking the appearance of something else) and cover the outside of their form in a thin layer of solid slime, sorta like an exoskeleton ? its like an entirely different kind of slime than the rest of our bodies that we only produce during this time, n were still like regular gloopy green slime on the inside but the thin layer on the outside can be whatever color and texture it needs to be to best match whatever theyre mimicking. so like post gloopmorphosis the inside of my mouth is green and i bleed green n stuff but for the most part i look and feel human. gloopmorphosis involves like a few months of absorbing whatever the hell we can to get like protein n stuff n actually start producing the slime n then for like ~4-6 days well actually start secreting the slime n then letting it harden. before it hardens its very sticky and ive heard unpleasant to touch but i couldnt tell ya. ooh another fun fact the reason we live so long is bc we cant rlly die of like sickness or fall damage or anything like that we can only be killed. rather than like one chunk of us being brain our consciousness is spread all throughout our slime so even if were like cut in half we can just exist as two pieces. the only way to kill us is to like fully separate the slime enough that our consciousness cant rlly hold on. thats why i hate water btw, it dilutes me n if i was in it long enough i would like fully melt into it and be together enough that id still be conscious but not viscous enough to actually put myself back into a physical form so id just be stuck as slime water forever. uh but thats also the whole deal w my putting my slime on/in ppl, its like a slime instinct to spread our slime like spores n get our consciousness as far spread out as possible. back before we decided to live underground all the time wed spread our slime around n then gloopmorphosize into like a tree or smth n just watch. but we stopped bc like something about the world getting more populated and ppl hunting slimes and it being unsafe? idk i wasnt around for that i formed when we were already in the caves. i think thats abt all ive got, thanks for listening! other slimes, feel free to share your memory abt how our stuff worked id love to hear it. - 💚🍯💫 (also i didnt mean for this ask to go on nearly as long as it did i got kinda carried away sorry)
