cpurpled could tell you the origin of every scar he’s ever gotten. channah could recount the most memorable ones, but has forgotten the smaller more insignificant details. if cboomer woke up with a giant new scar running all the way across their face i genuinely do not think they would notice nor remember it wasn’t there yesterday.

Idk I think it's funny seeing people on twitter say things like "Christians want to tell you it's all a part of Jesus's plan until it's them!" cause like idk about you but I've had family members 100% say they're ready to meet the Lord than interfere with his plans via a Tylenol and a flu shot

my dad asked me if I was gonna have a mid-life crisis about turning 30 in 2 months and I was just like…….
man, of all the things worth having a crisis about in life right now, turning 30 is the LEAST of my worries

ok gonna be real I’ve never understood the “daigo is like a son to me” route that the writers took with kiryu. they’ve never, at least for most of their time knowing each other, felt like they’ve had a father and son dynamic– an older brother/younger brother one sure, or maybe a young uncle/nephew one. because I mean? they’ve known each other since they were both kids and they’re literally only 8 years apart in age. in y0 it’s implied that kiryu played with him and babysat him more or less when he was around 16-20 and it just doesn’t feel like a Dad sort of thing At All. kiryu was also a kid. just an older kid. daigo was a little brat to him just like an annoying little brother while secretly thinking of kiryu as a Cool Teenager he looked up to and wanted to be more like. it feels way more like an older/younger sibling sort of thing or something akin to that and it only starts being a little more like a father/son dynamic some time after daigo loses his father and feels the need to fill the void– which he couldn’t even begin to do until at least ten years later because kiryu was in prison. and it’s not particularly in a healthy way either, considering. well. like I said. kiryu’s never actually been like a father to him. I don’t even mean that in a negative way in this case, it’s just literally not the role kiryu fundamentally had in his life (especially because their age difference is a good 10-20 years too close to be that of a parental relationship.) so idk. having kiryu say all of a sudden that he sees daigo as a son (especially rather than as family in some other way) just feels kinda. wrong. and jarringly unfounded.
I mean shit, even majima would be more of a dad-ish figure to daigo realistically considering kiryu basically assigned him to look after daigo for like. years. while kiryu just kinda left without any known plans of reconnecting at all. or even kashiwagi on a certain level because of how he stepped in alongside yayoi after sohei’s death. kiryu has barely been around, hasn’t really showed any interest in legitimately being in his life, and has barely had any deeply personal interactions with him since they were basically both kids. and as much as I think how long they’ve known each other and what they’ve both been through is a means for a familial bond of SOME kind, there just seems like no room or evidence for a paternal role being taken on.
at least nothing healthy in that regard; if kiryu’s like a dad to him then he’s undoubtedly a deadbeat one and perhaps feels like a dad to daigo in a way because daigo’s paternal model (his birth father) was also emotionally (and probably largely physically) absent and near-impossible to live up to. that’d at least make sense, regardless of how unhealthy it’d be, but it STILL really doesn’t explain kiryu saying he thinks of daigo like a son.
it’s just. it’s such a weird thing to have him say and I wish it was this confusing because of nuance but honestly I just think the writers watered their dynamic down to supposedly father/son because it seems more emotionally impactful for kiryu to say “you’re like a son to me” than anything else he could’ve potentially said about their bond.
#kiryu#daigo#rambling#sorry this is out of nowhere I just was thinking about their dynamic in y0 and it really hit me that like#yeah they’re. not that far apart in age.#kiryu was 7-8 years old when daigo was born. not exactly Father Age#and moreover it’s the fact that they grew up together As Kids to an extent#can you imagine if you and your father were both in your 20s or 30s At The Same Time#that’s. not a big age gap#also let me be clear I don’t think majima’s a paternal figure to daigo that was just an example to say like. even He has more basis in a way#for that to make sense#but even with majima- the age difference thing still kinda gets me because they’re only like 11ish years apart#like yeah majima’s significantly more mature don’t get me wrong but.#daigo’s dad is of a dad-like age to majima as well if you wanna put it in perspective.#makes it less weird when he highkey flirts with/sexualizes daigo in dead souls. like it’s okay. they’re not far apart in age enough to where#it’s Super Uncomfortable or something#another way of looking at this stuff is just considering that daigo and kiryu are both technically in the same generation#doesn’t particularly mean much but it’s still interesting to consider. they’re both solidly gen X (despite daigo absolutely feeling like he#should be a millennial).#majima’s technically (though just barely) a boomer so do with that what you will. that’s unrelated I just wanted to mention it cause it’s#funny to me#anyway I got off track. I hope any of this made sense

Oooh can you PLEASE talk about French complaints about anglicisms? I also love linguistics
Oh BOI, CAN I?????
There's this weird tendency (aka policy) in France against anglicisms and adopting words from the English language because the ruling class has this grand idea about French exceptionalism, how it must remain pristine and unchanged just like it Used to Be.
And ok, that seems reasonable on the surface, fighting American soft power and soft imperialism and all that.
Except they go about it in the STUPIDEST WAY.
You know what didn't exist as it is now, say 600 years ago? THE FRENCH LANGUAGE! The pronunciation was different, the grammar was different, the spelling was different. And you know what won't exist in 600 years? THE FRENCH LANGUAGE as it is now! (and humanity, probably, but that's another topic for another day) Cause that's how languages WORK.
Politicians and conservatives are all up in arms because of a few English words, failing to remember English takes a sizable chunk of it's vocab from French itself since the Norman conquest. They sometimes fustigate people for using an English word.... OF FRENCH ORIGIN!!!!!
Also word borrowing is one of the natural processes languages undergo. Alcohol? Arabic! Denim? French! Trying to stop it is like building a dam with Swiss cheese.
There is also this whole institution in France called the Académie Française, whose job is to define what's proper correct French and what isn't, and most of the members (for life) AREN'T EVEN FUCKING LINGUISTS?????? They're supposed to be the highest authority regarding the French language and it's just a fancy club of old people with fancy black and green jackets????
Anyway, some guys are also in charge to proposing (imposing) French words to replace anglicisms. The lastest ones are :
a streamer -> un joueur en direct
a deepfake -> une infox vidéo
a podcast -> une baladodiffusion
And those are the OFFICIAL words lawmakers have to use in official documents, whereas NO ONE on the French population would ever use them. Like.... EVER, because the use of those anglicisms is already rooted in everyday life, since they weren't any French equivalent when they were invented.
Anyway, I hate it, leave languages evolve naturally thank you for coming to my TED talk
NB : this rant does not apply to corporate anglicism, corporate anglicism can go die in a ditch, they are the opposite side of the elitism spectrum, stop calling it a "one-to-one" (wan-tou-wan) it's just a fucking review conversation with one of your colleagues OH MY GOD

Worst Guy Ever - Also, Unfortunately, Very Homosexual Convo. (subtextually)
#Evidence of Tom being a bad boyfriend is also in a file labeled 'Tom wants to fuck Steth so bad'#but seriously I wanted to deck him in this convo v_v FORTUNATELY it is bearable bc I think that's the point - like the narrative is#showing that Tom is 'ruining what he's worked for' by being a dick to B'Elanna so I'm not like meta-mad about it (like OTHER Tom/B'Elanna#moments) <- Ex: Tom saying 'I have a beautiful girlfriend' instead of something like#'someone I care about/a girl I love' but that's a like...tv writing thing. I don't like it but I know it's a tv writing thing#Woman as like a status symbol instead of a person you care about#I never care about Tom's inner conflict in Tom episodes (with the exception of the one where he gets thrown in solitary - him going full#rogue was fun) bc his inner conflict is always the most boomer bullshit#Literally he's just having a midlife crisis in this one.#BUT...GUYS....IMPORTANT NEWS...BULLDOG'S IN THIS ONE??#BULLDOG ?? My enemy BULLDOG BRISCOE from Frasier??? Good to see you man! This makes sense.#Steth....WHY would you choose to turn into a guy with a detailed and established web of interconnected relationships on a ship with a#complex hierarchy? Steth really thought he'd be able to play it cool on VOYAGER...the USS codependent...nu uh#they sniff you out and maul you like gophers on that baby#EHHEHEEH the Emh is funny as hell...'WOW...I had no idea me being so perfect at everything was making you feel bad! It all makes sense to#me now...' / Steth(as Tom):....Yeah v_v#SNRKEHEHEHEHEHEH GUYS..I'm taking a mental health day so I can reflect on myself and how even though I'll never be as good as the Doctor#I'm probably still worth SOMETHING#Steth(as Tom): Hey now B'Elanna...let's not go around blaming Steth for things. He's a pretty cool guy actually.#Okay yes confirmed! The above convo is also to show that Steth is 'being better' than Tom by telling B'Elanna what she wants to hear#unfortunately this does not make me like Tom more#SHE WANTS SO LITTLE. SHE ASKS FOR SO LITTLE.#BC Tom DOES say that B'Elanna is 'overreacting' and basically calls her crazy even when it's not for a later moral lesson and#this isn't framed as bad by the narrative. If your girl's always mad at you then your relationship ISN'T good.#There's literally NO resolution once again to their relationship issues. Tom shows her his garage program and when B'Elanna says she feels#she doesn't value her he says 'Yeah I do.' episode ends.#T/B scenes are literally [conflict arises then they argue or kiss] <- it is never...RESOLVED...#Me @ The Writers: (B'Elanna voice) Is this your idea of an adult conversation?#OH. Gay subtext: I hate spending time with my girl I want to hang out and live the bachelor life with my cool guy friend.#Tom's grease monkey program might as well be a subscription to playgirl magazine sit DOWN dude

i really want to start making a table collecting statistics on the audience demographics i'll perform my aubrey material for (like what generation most of the audience is, whether i'm performing in a predominantly queer space, etc.) and how well the jokes land bc like. i need to collect more data points before i can properly present my findings but the results so far have been fascinating
#again i do not have enough performance experiences to make any definitive claims about who ''aubery's audience'' is#but i find it funny that any time i show my aubrey material one-on-one to a queer gen z person#they're always like ''i love it but straight people will definitely hate it or not get it''#and i get the inclination to be like. ''i like this thing so people like me will like this thing''#and cishet society seems so polarized w/r/t queer topics it's like. the assumption makes sense#however. whenever i've done an aubrey performance in front of an audience that's predominantly queer and gen z#i've actually received a primarily negative response!! and somehow straight people have never given me shit for my aubrey material#(''well straight allys don't count'' i told some of my aubrey jokes to a joe rogan dudebro and he enjoyed them)#(which yeah maybe could be a mark against my comedy but i like to think i opened his mind a bit at the very least)#i really want to test my aubrey monologues in front of a primarily gen x/boomer audience#bc so far i only have actual performance experience in front of gen z or millennials#and the older people i've told jokes to individually or shown videos of my stuff have really liked it#luckily paul has said a goal for when i'm in town this summer is to get me to perform my aubrey stuff in as many different places as possib#for both queer audiences and non-queer audiences so i can gauge reactions since i don't want to be confined to one demographic#so i'll get a lot of data points this summer#@ paul get me a performing slot at senior citizen pride lmao these are my people#(shoutout to paul going ''jess stop collecting the old homos!'' last time i was in town)#(and when i imitated him and was like ''old gay men are not your pokemon!'' bellini was like ''ok but they may be your audience'')#also one data point i really want to see the variation on is how my one specific joke plays in these different demographics#bc i have a joke that like. it's literally not even about AIDS and doesn't punch down at all#i literally say ''if you're gay and over the age of 50 you could violate the geneva convention and i'd still be like support our troops''#like obviously being like ''you have been through hell so i will let you get away with literal war crimes you deserve ultimate immunity''#BUT. in the line right before the quote i use the phrase ''AIDS generation'' not as a derogatory term but being like.#this horrible thing impacted the entire generation y'know? and bellini and scott and their friends call themselves that it's just the term#but when i said the phrase ''AIDS generation'' in front of my gen z audience i heard gasps and felt like they all hated me#and when i did the same line in front of millennials it wasn't quite as striking but their eyes did widen#like i was suddenly an ''edgy comedian''. but like this is a part of our history and it does inform the story i'm telling#the story i'm telling is comedic but it's grounded in this real world context#and i'm like. @ the audience who was offended: when was the last time any of y'all spoke to a gay man over the age of 50#bc bellini loves that section of the monologue and was offended that people would even take offense to that phrase

bdubs truely prides himself with being the blacksmith that forges every sword he falls on
I have been turning this over in my mind bc you're correct and I think it hits on maybe the thing that gives me the second most agony over any given Situation bdubs has put himself in, which is that he is really good at forging swords to fall on to such an extent that he does not know how to make swords that do not harm the user.
I love thinking abt him in comparison to Scar, who has a similar but distinct paradox: he dies a lot, and is constantly trying to bend things to his will through big talk, and dies often enough that him being dangerous is always somehow a surprise. he just does not choose to be on high alert at all times, because playing dangerous or loose is fun and has minimal consequences when you can get regeared easily - and he can play well in 3L when it isn't.
bdubs, though. oh, bless him. he feigns outrage at the s8 clockwork mansion and then is absolutely tickled leaving it that his friends would do him the kindness of forging swords FOR him to throw himself on. he is, unlike Scar, frequently terrified of dying, which is why he sleeps and avoids the nether; when he plays reckless he's selfish and loud and full of fairly empty bravado, which is a different kind of big talk. scar wants you to buy his snake oil, but bdubs wants you to mistake him for a more dangerous animal so he doesn't have to find out if he is. so he dies enough, because it's an easy bluff to call! everyone laughs at the guy jousting at windmills as if he didn't build them himself.
he rarely gets away with even accidental slights in LL and DL without making enemies, even when others do worse and come out far ahead socially. but as has been said the bravado also hides his competencies, because you never expect the guy with the big mouth to have tricky secrets. (this is why his tango/etho assassinations in 3L are still the most impressive scheme of all, and why the homewrecker bit is just so fucking doomed.)
but. But! he is not in the habit of letting those be in service of much but crafting swords that can be fallen on. Interrupts tango fk show off his cobble generator and then remarks not a whit on how technically impressive the pretty stone sugar cane farm is as a custom functional art piece tailored to its commissioner (tnt, suckers) and charges nothing for it. he is not very good at being red unless he's building a disgustingly competent crastle (the WINDOWS they make me sick). hard to throw yourself on a sword when you've only got one, though he does it beautifully in his LL finale that no one will ever see his side of.
scar can turn it back on because his dying and percieved lack of skills is a focus and a stakes thing. bdubs rarely can, because his dying and perceived lack of skills is because he will play the role that needs played for good stakes to be possible, and if those stakes are life or death he's already being cleo's sword or a hero with skizz or making a stand at his wrecked home. he has already forged the swords, the hilts are already buried in the ground. just one tiny push, and there he goes -
