I'm Grateful For You

Third grade teachers may very well be the happiest, nicest people on earth.  (Full disclosure: My sister, Michelle, is one of these angels.) At her elementary school they have a program to promote values by focusing on a word every month. “Gratitude” was the word last November. Michelle taught the suggested lessons about gratitude and they were helpful.  But one afternoon as she walked over to a small group of kids an idea popped into her head. She looked at one of the girls and said: “I’m grateful for you.”  The kid’s face just lit up.  Michelle hadn’t expected such a powerful reaction but knew she might be on to something.  She turned to the next kid and said: “I’m grateful for you.”  He also began to beam. Then she said those magic words to each and every student in the group.  They all beamed. That in turn guided her to visit everyone in the room to say those words: “I’m grateful for you.” Needless to say, the “gratitude” lesson has continued in Michelle’s classroom long after the school values ended.  It’s now an everyday part of her curriculum.  Kids now naturally turn to one another in class and say it.  Michelle communicates it every day.  It was like the power of catching a big wave while surfing. The class visited the library one day, and on their own turned to the librarian and said, “I’m grateful for you.” She was touched.  They told the principal, she cheered. Everyone that visits the classroom get an earful of gratitude.  But I like this story the best: Every morning, third grade starts with sharing.  Often a student raises her hand to share what happened at home or on the playground. Michelle’s favorite is when one little boy raised his hand to say that at dinner the night before that he told his grandmother: “I’m grateful for you.” Grandma started crying, and the whole family joined in.  “I never expected that just saying this simple phrase would be so powerful,” Michelle said. “It’s been like a giant wave of love expanding and growing outward from our classroom out into the community.” Read the full article

Here are my designs for my Zebrafish elementary school AU! (Inspired by Arthur) Everyone is 8 (except budding 6th grader Walt,who's 11. I never saw Tanya being older than her friends. All of them seem the same age,except for Walt,who seems older),and are best friends who have a pretend band. While Tanya still gets cancer in my AU,it's treated in a way like how Arthur touched the subject. In my AU,Walt's not as emotional,and plays lacrosse. Tanya has dark brown hair like her big brother,but with pink streaks,and is an animal lover. Vita religiously watches Hannah Montana and thinks she's the coolest 3rd grader there is. Plinko is a comedian-in-training and likes Spongebob and fart jokes. Jay volunteers at Help House Missionaries (a fictional organization I made up),a church-owned shelter for immigrants and refugees,with Jay being adopted from India at age 2. Does anyone genuinely like Spilling The Milk's TD videos? Or literally any video they make at all? I tried watching their World Tour video uploaded very recently and it's nothing but the most cringeworthy thirdgrade ass humor I've seen. They aren't even paying any attention to what's going on and just pause at a very random moment to either say "this show sucks" or to make homophobic, fatphobic or racist "jokes". They're also thristing over Leshawna and Gwen because of course they are. Literally take the most unfunny things that ever came out of the fandom, combine it into one and you get these guys.

At least they hate Sierra, which is valid, but they hate Noah, Aleheather and Tyler for literally no reason whatsoever and i'm like wtf.

Around halloween last year i started telling spooky stories to the gradeschoolers I work with. Some kids kept demanding them all year and the new rule is one scary story a day.

So after doing urban legends, some magnus archives, poe, and little shop of horrors, i started just asking kids what tehy want to be in the story and they usually have enough ideas for me to cobble together a story that will pass by campfire light.

Today a thirdgrader suggested ' a castle and a dragon...no a prince who got turned into a dragon...no that's not scary. Someone who gets their hands choppped off and the hands go around and kill people.'
