the history of nat's nickname is so...mundane? like...we've all mixed up salt/sugar before. not in gravy, mind, but i don't make a lot of italian gravy. traditional gravy (meat drippings + roux)? yeah. not italian.

cousin steve going in on the baseball card racket b/c it sounds hilarious to him is the most relatable thing i've ever seen on tv. like it's not gonna end well but boy is it gonna be worth his money for the entertainment

gosh in every carmy/mikey scene every line of dialogue is a painful reminder of carmy's "i just wanted him to say good job!" from 1X08.

"i don't need you acting all nice if you don't give a f//k" that's carmy, down to his bones. it's why he said nat was being gross when she pulled the Small Innocent Little Girl act on cicero. carmy lies, dodges, represses, stays out of stuff, sure. but when people ask him what he thinks, he tells them. and he doesn't want people to be nice to him if they actually don't care.

carmy wants to be loved so badly, wants to be loved without having to ask for it or claw it out of people. it hurts really, really bad. exquisitely acted.

gift giving! he has a knack for it -- the knife to tina is the most recent example, but very few people to give to right now. the drawing is so lovely, and carmy looks so boyish and happy when mikey says he loves it

oh mikey. he looks so lost and so unhappy and so worried when he's by himself. he's not doing well and he hides it through loud bravado, and especially looks like he hides it from carmy. the beef is a mess right now, and i think he knows he probably won't be around to open that restaurant with carmy. but his note makes even more sense now, as does the money. it really was the gift he felt like he could give. i'm hard on mikey as an older sibling, but he's got his own stuff he's dealing with on top of everything, and it really shows sometimes

this family is so full of desperately sick, unhappy, unhealthy people. and it seems like when they congregate, it just gets worse.

mikey's trying to set carmy up for life, in the role of father figure/older brother -- skills, money, even a romantic partner. but none of it is what carmy actually needs, present day.

andor (eng, s1) — the only show i am currently keep up with week to week. it’s brilliant, utterly brilliant. the three-episode model keeps the writing/action/tension contained, keeping me in this welcoming chokehold until the very end of the season. that is how you keep your storyline moving, for a 12-ep season, without it feeling dragged out. and the story itself has a low, raging rumble against this very real world backdrop. i just want to exist in this world forever, peeling away all the layers of the rebellion and the empire. stripping all that we have known about the force and everything that the existing franchise builds on until all that’s left: empirical fascism and oppression. and we are being gifted this fantastic premise with a character that can’t narratively die. because we already know his fate. this description is in all lower case, but you best believe i am screaming this the whole way through.

somebody feed phil (eng, s4) — this and the below show are two that i have been watching slowly, splicing up all the episodes between when i started in the summer to the end of the year. i am tackling this show one season a month, which is always a breath of fresh air in between all the dramas i have scheduled. phil is an absolute delight to watch and the choice of locations are so well thought out. i already have a trip to plan for nyc in the near future due to this show. i dread the day i run out of episodes to watch…. oh no lol

guardian (cmn, s1) — as i said prev, this is also a show i have split up my time through the year, tackling this show 10 eps per month. I have seen 20/40 so far and it’s great so far! to me, its very reminiscent of shadowhunters (a prev jessi hyperfixation). if you give me mediocre vfx + found family trope, i will eat it all up i love it so. and the two leads go from 0 to work husbands by the second epsiode, i love that for them. they have such amazing chemistry and like somebody feed phil, i will mourn the day i finish this show.

planning to watch

glitch (kor, premiere) — as i write this, i will be starting this show in the evening. osmosis went HARD on my dash lol i mean, the premise and the vibes are all there. i am going into this blind, only with the knowledge of the two actresses having great chemistry together. the space/alien aesthetics are just a bonus. can’t wait to find out what it’s all about, stay tuned.

werewolf by night (eng, movie) — this is also a last min decision to do, esp for halloween night. when i heard about this show, i wasn’t sold on the concept until i saw that gael was the lead and directed by michael giacchino. the man who has gifted us with the ost for LOST and Up! directed a marvel movie????? i am all in. and this all before knowing anything about the plot.

sleep with me (fil, s1) — my first filipino show sched on my watchlist YAYYY!!! for me, it’s such a hard sell to make me watch a filipino series. but this one really peaked my interest, it also being the first gl for me to tackle this year. i know lovi from the one that got away, so im excited to see what she’s like here. hope there’s more filipino content on my radar in the future. the only other show i have on my deck is gaya sa pelikula but have not determined a date for it. maybe summer 2023??

after this show, i do not have any new bl/gl’s on the calendar for the rest of the year. I am waiting for osmosis to kick in for anything coming up. feel free to check out what i do have on deck, thru jan 2023.

bad buddy (thai, s1) — i originally planned for a rewatch by myself at the last week of the year, marking the one year anniversary when i started watching this show. it always marked the beginning of my bl/asian drama journey, so it felt right to get this on the calendar for me. sometime ago, i was informed that the fandom was planning a rewatch in october, so i immediately reshuffled my entire rest of the year to accommodate for it lol. what else is there to say, im returning home.

vice versa (thai, s1) — and in replacing my original plan, of rewatching bad buddy at the end of dec, i have now scheduled vice versa. its my birthday week, ofc i want to see my son and my solemn face moonchild. i miss them. SO. MUCH. ugh

Last Night's dream: I dreamt that there was a family of bears living in our backyard. And that Frank Ocean released a visual album - I think it was a new one - and we were watching it on the TV in the kitchen.

Where I went: res, school - stu's class for digital!, took the GO train home

What I ate: 3 bananas, oatmeal, cookies, a cracker, dumplings with soy sauce for brunch. For dinner, I had home food, which was egg + chives, chicken + da cai, coriander chutney, and a tuna sandwich that Chai Li brought home. For dessert, I had tiramisu, cookies, and tea!

What I did: So I woke up at 10:55 am. and I was like FUCK I'm late AGAIN. And I rushed to get ready for school and was out the door in pretty good time. I texted Sarah and we met up to walk to class together. She had asked me if I remembered where the class was, and I thought to meet her outside the pink wall, but because she texted 2 mins ago, I figured she'd be farther down the way so I kept walking (after I stopped!). And then I was like "where r u" and she was like "behind u" and I was like 0.0 lol. And so we walked to class together. Our computers weren't working so Stu had to help us, and Graham also came to help. Sarah's been working on her table merch for the zine club table! (I forgot what it's called.) I'm glad Carrie is joining her and Erica! Because maybe we can invite Erica to some dinners! I also let Sarah know about the depth cues zine submission coming up. I let Carrie know the day before. Sarah left class kinda early. It was hard to follow what was going on tbh. Stu brought the animation into photoshop and idk how he did it. I spent the majority of the class just looking at 3D assets and wondering how Stu did it. Instead of asking him, I just wasted time and left a little past 1:00 pm. Ugh. I need to get better at asking for help!! After, I went back to the dorm to have brunch. I had to eat all the bananas I got from Walmart because they would have otherwise rotted over the weekend. And when Carrie came back from class, we spent some time in the kitchen together, working and eating. She also did not do the rotoscoping thing, so she worked on that while I read and took notes. We also took a look at some of the forest finals people made in her class. I decided to catch the bus around 4:48, so I left Res at around 4:30 and caught the bus. Some people (including me) were running from the bus to try and catch the GO train at Oakville GO. I don't know if I even tapped correctly. I don't know if I hit the override button all the way. So I was sitting very anxiously on the train. I couldn't even read or listen to music. After I got to union station, I decided to do some reading, because I had to wait for like 45 mins until the next train. Then, I got on the train and kept reading there. I felt like such an intellectual. Oh ya, something I remembered from earlier today aka last night. I met Carrie in the kitchen at around 2-3:00 am and I was telling her how great the book was. And how a lot of the tips could apply to illustration. And she felt inspired hearing some of the tips and stories. And she also wants to make films! I am happy to hear. Anyways, Mom picked me up from the station, and we went to No-frills to buy drinks for tomorrow. I wore a thin jacket, which I kind of regret, but I have other jackets at home, so it should be okay. Then, we went to Woodside to pick up a cake for Alex. Woodside got pimped out. The dinosaurs move. And there was a DJ. And it was dark but there were colourful lights lol. We got the cake from Everbest bakery. 6 buns from there are $10 now :( they used to be 6 buns for $3. But for them, I understand the price increase because they're a small business. After we came back home, I took a shower, and then had dinner. Helped mom with washing some dishes, then made tea. And I worked on my rotoscoping assignment and watched EI and I'm about to go to sleep because I have work at 10:00 tomorrow.

Closing thoughts: I don't see the hype with ice spice. And I might eat my words later down the line, but at the moment I don't get it. That video of her peeing in a fan's mouth while she was performing is also quite disgusting and it was my first impression of her... I need to MAKE time for drawing.

Why don't you like Scrooge/Santa?

Hard for me to enjoy the ship when the episode was so disappointing lol characterization was a mess next to episodes like split sword (though tbf the end of s3 was a mess when it comes to scrooge) and we just spent 20 min watching scrooge bully a lonely gay bear whose been obsessed with him since their 19-day fling

goldie and scrooge is fun because it's mutual and they're both mean and grumpy but santa is literally the nicest person on earth and scrooge has spent 100+ years treating him like a leper. Its not cute

i think the santa hatred was better left unexplained. it was a lot more fun then since everyone's headcanons for what happened were so much more interesting than what we were given. and it would've been nice to have some followup of Last Christmas with a Donald and Della christmas storyline instead since LC was such a solid emotional ep. Maybe with huey as the centric child instead of dewey this time??? Could've been a nice family ep another great opportunity to bring up Hortense and Quackmore yknow. There were a lot of things they could've done with the family and no one would've minded that the Santa hatred was unexplained cuz it was so funny to theorize

Like I said it was just disappointing all around so I can't enjoy it. But I'm also someone who doesn't like Christmas episodes that are about the "Spirit of Christmas" cuz I'm Jewish and I don't care. I like Christmas eps that are about family and love and togetherness and loneliness cause it makes for a much more entertaining story that reaches a wider audience

and i remember how i found the ep1 live stream on youtube and just wanted to watch a super small part - and i turned it on right at starship’s performance. and i was so heartbroken at hyeongjun performing so poorly because he looked so cute, but he fought back!! and he did so well and came in 4th (!!!!!) place! i love him

and i remember how i first saw donghyun and thought “ah! he looks a lot like donghyun from season 2!” and then i was gonna write down his name and..... wait a second

now that i look back at my list i wrote in the beginning with trainees to look out for...... im shook

i wrote down song hyeongjun, ham wonjin, don dongpyo, lee eunsang, lee wonjun (ah bby :/ ), keum donghyun, nam dohyun, kim yohan, cho seungyoun, kim sihoon and yoon junghwan

8/11 were in the top 20, 6/11 got into the final lineup and the others are hella talented and were eliminated too early

but i guess overall i’m satisfied with the outcome?? like i would’ve wanted wonjin and donghyun in it but i’m not too bothered tbh. it’s alright

i would’ve wanted jinhyuk and wooseok to change places bc i think jinhyuk would bring more to the group, him placing 14th is bullshit

the most saddening thing tho is that the starship boys are all split up now for 5 years so we probs won’t see a starship boygroup now for another 2.5 years so bye guys

yeah, i would love to know more of your thought about sarazanmai! I really enjoyed the villain of the week format, but yeah, it went for too long, there's only one more ep left and there's a lot happening, idk if feels like with just one ep is not enough to wrap this up

it’s a bit hard to explain some of my thoughts/issues on it without going in a bit more detail so i’ll spoiler text it. so anyone who loves sarazanmai or ikuhara prepare for some potentially bad takes. i apologize in advance. i’ll preface this by saying that i like sarazanmai, but when i’m watching it i just wish i could like it a bit more. so this isn’t an attack on the show or anyone who likes it, just me sharing my thoughts.

sarazanmai spoilers ahead

so for the first half, i know that the focus wasn’t supposed to be on the kappa zombies but it was really hard for me to get invested in those scenes because the zombies didn’t have an inkling of depth to them and it really felt like the episodes were just going through the motions to reach the important parts (the memory leaks), and unfortunately going through the motions means watching the same 5 min of stock footage every episode. i get that stock footage is ikuhara’s “thing” but i honestly wasn’t a fan of it in utena and i wasn’t a fan of it here (and i LOVE all the scenes that get recycled, i just don’t need to see them in the same sequence and in every episode. and i’ve yet to see someone defend sarazanmai’s use of stock footage without just saying ‘that’s ikuhara’s thing tho’). the zombies felt like punchlines to jokes without proper build up, and i didn’t think they were very funny. but i loved most of the slice of life scenes which really carried the show for me in the first half. on their own the characters are really entertaining.

i’d have thought episode 10 was really fantastic if it wasn’t trying to make me feel bad for two characters that literally just shot and nearly killed enta at the end of the ep 2 weeks ago, which led to this entire episode revolving around saving enta. but in my mind, ep 10 is really what the show should’ve been more like. instead of the kappa zombies just being random people maybe they should be more relevant characters getting zombified like mabu in the last ep. the problem with doing that though is that the cast isn’t really that large to begin with, but like you could probably find a way to involve enta’s sister, kazuki’s brother, toi’s brother, whoever else that actually has a face in this show. i believe that you should really judge a show based on what’s there rather than what you want it to be, but when sarazanmai shows what it’s capable of with some well structured episodes with relevant characters, it’s hard for me to look back and not ask “well why couldn’t the rest of the show be like this?” and if anyone thinks that there isn’t enough time in a 20 minute episode for introducing characters and having a meaningful and well-built climax all within the constraints of a single episode, there’s dozens of series that can prove it’s possible (natsume yuujinchou, mushishi, kino’s journey, cowboy bebop, etc).

i would have also liked the MCs relationships to have a bit more depth beyond the fact that they all like to play soccer. and i say this as someone who is also a bit of a lionel kappa messi fanboy like enta and kazuki. but damn this whole relationship really revolves around enta wanting to pass the ball to him and a pair of ankle bracelets. maybe i’m forgetting things from the beginning of the show but by the end now it’s really just devolved into soccer. they seemed to be approaching toi a bit differently at first but then even he ended just up wanting to play soccer this whole time.

maybe the main problem though is time. there’s just not enough episodes. i’d have been fine with some of those zombie of the week episodes if they were just a few episodes in a much larger 2 cour or even 3 cour show, but by the time they were over, half the show was finished. and that’s not to say that all the zombie of the week episodes were pointless (they very clearly weren’t as far as the slice of life/drama portions of the episode were concerned).

there’s been a lot of negative thoughts here so i’ll try to balance it out with the positives. and really i wasn’t even trying to be too negative but any time someone says something that doesn’t praise a show they like there’s always people who get butthurt or think you’re being some nihilist who just wants to shit on everything for the sake of being edgy. and i’m not trying to be edgy here, i like sarazanmai a fair amount, i just wish i could like it more.

when the show started shifting from the zombie of the week format with the haruka rescue episode, it gave me some hope. i thought that episode was just great, from how it was structured and how it helped expand our understanding of the characters. i thought, wow, what a great episode, and they didn’t even have to spend time on a kappa zombie whose main point seemed to just be poking fun at people’s fetishes. this isn’t me saying that sarazanmai is being problematic for unironically kink shaming, just that the humor doesn’t really appeal to me.

and for as much as i complain about the zombie of the week sequences, i think that the actual scenes themselves are just incredible. the first time i saw it my mind was blown. but like i said, i don’t really need to see them a ton of times in the same order because it just feels like the show is killing time when that time probably could have been better spent devoting it to the characters who DESPERATELY need time in this 11 episode show.

i think it’s great for gay/queer people to get some explicit and undeniable representation too. even if it’s not always “healthy” portrayals of relationships (enta kissing kazuki while he’s asleep is a big WTF moment not just bc “omg gay!” but because you could probably classify it as sexual assault if you really wanted). but some anime have this “problem” where, for whatever reason, the writers rely on vague dialogue choices and actions that leave sexuality up to interpretation. yuri on ice, one of my favorite shows, is guilty of this. and it’s led to a lot of shitposting about how yuri and viktor aren’t REALLY gay because “the show never says they’re gay,” but if you watch the show, what other conclusion can you really draw other than these two dudes wanna fuck? some people have a problem with this type of writing, so seeing sarazanmai being very obvious with just how gay it is is just nice so that i won’t have to read in a few weeks about how mabu and reo are just good friends.

i think there are a lot of positives besides these things too. i’m not gonna list them all but it really is an exciting show and most of the character drama is strong enough for me to keep watching.

so i like the show, but at the end of the day i feel like these flaws are what i’m really going to remember instead of some of the positives since i’ve already been focusing on them for the past 2-3 months.

these thoughts are a bit unorganized so sorry if it’s a bit long or hard to follow. maybe a bit ironic for someone who was just nitpicking the format of a show. this is really the first chance i’ve had to talk about this show in any depth and if anyone’s still reading this i appreciate it.

also feel free to leave a follow up ask for any reason or if you think im wrong about some of these things. i dont really treat my opinion as truth and im sure there’s things i’ve missed or have misinterpreted.

my thoughts after watching Slam Dunk episode 60

 Ep 60 is not the end of Slam dunk but it is more or less the last episode of the first season.

My History

i first started watching slam dunk around march last year but i stopped because Sakuragi’s character was really hard to get used to. After recent events I finally got the courage to continue watching the series from where i left off in ep 40ish. 

At this point of the story the other members of the main team are starting to shine. Sakuragi’s improvement are already showing results. The main team had very rough beginnings in the earlier episdes but they have slowly come together as a team.

Episode 45 is where the real sports anime that is Slam Dunk manifested for me. For the first time, I actually had fun watching basketball in anime.

General Impressions

Slam Dunk is a really good sports anime. Because the main character is a real newbie, viewers who are non-player/non-enthusiasts can easily understand the concepts. Especially when they are used in the official matches.

Compared to other sports anime like Prince of Tennis, Haikyuu, Hanebado and Kuroko no Basket, Slam Dunk rival schools aren’t villainized and made evil. This is partly because Sakuragi, the main character is actually a former delinquent. He is still mostly disrespectful and a jerk.

 Almost all Slam Dunk opponents shown at this point were good teams in their own right. They had admirable, competitive aces and kind members. This made it a heartwarming anime to watch. It is also very easy to like the other teams despite only knowing their names and capabilities.

Maybe because I never liked KnB that much, I really appreciated how at least 3/5  team members of rival teams were given their own time in the spotlight.

A lot of sports anime tropes can be found in Slam Dunk. It is really a precursor to most modern sports animes. (this makes me want to watch Captain Tsubasa and Knockout someday too)

The Girls

The girls are also vital to the success of the story. Haruko, Sakuragi’s love interest, is a real basketball nut and a kind person at heart. Even her own set of friends soften up as the series goes along. Ayako, the team manager is intelligent, vocal and strong willed. A rival player’s girlfriend was also helpful to the story in her own way. Reporter Aida is an expert and has a real eye for talent. All in all, the ladies shine in this series. They are not fanservicey and they command a lot of respect. Many of the other girls are portrayed as rabid fangirls, but hey who could blame them tbh.

Technical Stuff

Another thing is that the games are structured the same as USA College ball.  This means that each game last for 2 halves each lasting 20 mins each. Total play time is 40 mins. NBA divides the game into 4 quarters, each 12 mins long for a total of 48 hrs. -->Kuroko no Basket follows the NBA rules.

This means Slam Dunk characters play non-stop for 20 minutes, then go for a 15-min (or 20 min, im not sure) halftime break, then play non-stop again for another 20 minutes. This doesn’t include the times when the watch stops due to a shot, referee calls, time outs and overtime. This kind of basketball is generally more exhausting  and requires more stamina and endurance.

This is something I had to keep in mind while watching. This is not the basketball that I am used to seeing on TV. The players are stretched extra thin in a different way.

Comedy

This show is funny as heck. Sakuragi is comedic relief all by himself. His best friends who are part of his delinquent gang also provide pure comedy. Even more so that all of them love to come up with nicknames with different people. Slapstick comedy is used excellently. The joke timings are down to a pat. Rukawa is different entity by himself. He provides smartass quips that make you guffaw in no time. Rival characters also have their funny moments too esp with snapbacks that will catch you off guard all the time. 

Hopes

I really don’t remember much about Sendoh Akira because i didn’t watch the first practice match properly. I look forward to seeing their team play once more. Also I hope to find an existent Slam Dunk Fandom somewhere. On tumblr, it’s pretty dead but i’ve read good fics on AO3 recently. 

Actually at this point in the story, Sakuragi will get better so I look forward to watching that, and reading the manga and any more materials I can find.

I still don’t like Sakuragi. I don;t know if i’ll ever do. There is fondness as I say this though.

CAPTURE LOVER #冰糖陷阱 eps 1-3 review/recap

So, Capture Lover aka China’s first BL drama since Addicted has started airing. So far eps 1-3 are already up on the site/app: https://www.gagaoolala.com/en/home (and will be available on viki too later this month--July, I mean, but i couldn’t wait and signed up for a GagaOOLaLa account, but the first ep is free on the GagaOOLaLa app and honestly it’s not too expensive--about 6.99USD for the rest of the episodes.)

One thing I wish is that this series had a bigger budget than it did, but, honestly, considering all the obstacles in TPTB’s way in *even* getting this much produced, I’m still excited to watch it and support it. (Like we know Taiwanese/Chinese dramas can all be very High Quality, and it makes me sad that CL had such a low budget to work with...so  just something to consider if or when ppl start watching this drama and complain about the quality...)

but let’s talk about the characters:

DING JUNJIE is the manager (at 25, apparently). a calm hard-worker. honestly, he comes off as one of those super up-tight, perfectionist a*holes. but he’s also extremely handsome, and loyal to fault. 

YING JIAMING is...look, he just wants to nap all the time. WHY WONT ANYONE LEAVE HIM ALONE TO SLEEP??? he’s always super tired, copies whole projects from the internet (loll), and generally has a very bad work ethic that Junjie wonders why HR hired him at all...(bc Jiaming’s the Chairman’s son and he’ll take over the company someday loll) 

Junjie’s & Jiaming’s relationship here at the very beginning is adversarial--Junjie is no-nonsense, serious, prim & proper, and Jiaming is of course the very opposite--he doesn’t take work seriously, just wants to nap and play videogames all day, and pranks Junjie. He shrugs off even the threat of bankruptcy. A very delicious beginning of the “enemies to lovers” trope. 

then there’s Manager Leng:

Manager Leng is Junjie’s boss--she ends up making him redo his work when she finds some mistakes. And by ep. 2 she’s gone, which makes me sad (i hope they at least transferred her to another good department..)

Because of Jiaming plagiarising stuff off the internet, Junjie forces Jiaming to work with him later that night, locking the door to his office so Jiaming won’t be able to escape (loolll cant Jiaming just unlock the door himself??) Jiaming tries to get a bathroom break, but Junjie just gives him a water bottle (ewwwww, so many things wrong with that, I sincerely hope it’s a joke...). Then he says he’s hungry, and Junjie offers him instant noodles he prepared, but Jiaming wants seafood. They bicker some more, and get in each other’s faces--like extremelyyyy close to each other.

Junjie’s very depressing office--he does have a potted plant, but it’s in the corner, and I wonder why they cover up the one window he has.

Jiaming attempts to apologize for all his mistakes by bringing Junjie a drink of water. BUT THEN tells him it’s from the toilet, oh that child. (I mean...it’s not really from the toilet as Jiaming takes a sip himself, but considering how much teasing & joking around Jiaming does, is it any wonder Junjie can’t figure out when Jiaming is being earnest or not?? I sure as hell can’t.)

EP. 1 was pretty good in developing Junjie’s & Jiaming’s dynamic. And, I’ll be honest, the thing that drew me in...of course, there are a myriad of things that could be better with this series, but for the budget they’re working with, I’m not expecting a masterpiece.

EP. 2 THO is when things get really going--for one, Jiaming replaces Manager Leng as head of the company! And his attire makes me think he copied Junjie’s style--Junjie isn’t the only one who works in a suit (upper management are the only ones in business attire, while the underlinings seem to be allowed in casual wear), but lemme me think it’s bc of Junjie anyways.  

Junjie though is NOT at all impressed by this turn of events. 

After the meeting, these three voice their disbelief at the change in personnel, having doubts about why Jiaming is now head of the company considering how bad of an employee he was.

THEN this exchange happens wherein Jiaming vows to teach Junjie some “lessons” too...

they end up staring into each other’s eyes a lot considering they don’t like each other that much yet.

Jiang Zhihao comes by wondering what Junjie is doing working late again, and Junjie says to ask Ying Jiaming. Zhihao is astonished that Ying Jiaming  is making Junjie work on his birthday, and advises Junjie to complain to the Chairman about his son. Though Junjie wonders when a lowly worker such as himself would even get a chance to meet the Chairman.

Jiaming also comes by with dinner--not being able to leave Junjie alone since he’s working late. 

(these dumplings look soooo good.)

One of them is working hard and the other is stuffing his face lol (i mean jiaming did offer his food to the workaholic, but the workaholic refused the free food...)

Jiaming finds out that it’s Junjie‘s birthday and runs out to buy a cake. And that’s the end of the second episode.

EP. 3 starts with Jiaming waiting for the cake at the bakery. And of course he rushes the poor pastry lady. 

BUT he finds he was too late because, a lady--Meng Yao, aka Junjie’s only female friend--beats him to Junjie’s office with her own cake, and asks Junjie to make a wish. I find this so adorable. Meng Yao is super pretty and cute though.

While he’s thinking of what to wish for, Jiaming literally rushes into the room--sees the cake on the table, and tries to scold Junjie for not working. Hahahahaha. Now he acts like the cold, harsh boss that he isn’t.

Junjie walks Meng Yao home, and it’s obvious that she feels something for him as she hugs him and asks him not to push her away. She admits that she has been with him ever since elementary school, and i’m like, lady, that is utter devotion right there. 

Though she says she’s tired (presumably of this utter devotion), she hopes he’ll allow her to love him for a few more years. (Like, whuuuut?? Meng Yao is also utterly loyal, and I wish she could move on.)

Junjie gets home, and his mother fusses over him. Initially, he refuses her food--saying he had some cake that Meng Yao brought over at the office, and of course Mama Ding starts singing Meng Yao’s praises. 

Mama Ding also tries to snoop around some and figure out if there’s anything going on between them, but Junjie is pretty firm that they’re just good friends, and you can tell he hates disappointing both his mother & Meng Yao. 

(“I don’t have plans to fall in love yet” hahahahaha famous last words, dear Junjie.)

Junjie is a good son, working so hard so his mother isn’t the one suffering, and I like his mom (what we’ve seen of her so far), but she’s also pretty much counting on Junjie marrying a girl & having children, so I wonder if she’s going to be a roadblock to Junjie’s & Jiaming’s relationship later on. Or at least one of them...

As Junjie eats his mother’s dumplings that she prepared for his birthday, he flashes back to Jiaming’s offerings of his own dumplings in the office. 

The next morning Junjie gets to work and finds Jiaming’s cake on his desk with a post-it note wishing him happy birthday. Awww. It’s sweet, and the adorablest. Until we see the cake, that is.

While Junjie’s smirking to himself in his office, a commotion outside draws his attention--Zhang Fengxia has arrived with her two bodyguards (she’s Jiaming’s ex-girlfriend), and is trying to push her way into the office, but the office workers can’t allow her admittance.

Zhang Fengxia yells for Ying Jiaming, but Junjie informs her he’s not at work yet.

Zhang Fengxia (aka “please call me Lucy. Lucy Zhang”) asks who he is that he would know when Jiaming gets into work or not (which is also what I was thinking, NGL, seeing as Junjie isn’t his boss anymore).

Ying Jiaming announces behind everyone that Junjie is his boyfriend (!!!!!) and this is the start of them fake-dating to keep Zhang Fengxia away, lolll.

While Jiaming tries to beg Junjie for his help, the three underlinings have a gross conversation about this romantic development being a dream come true for the female office workers. AND then this guy opens his mouth. (We don’t know any of the underlinings’ names yet, so he’ll just be “this guy” for now.) I know there’s a serious problem of gay fetishization that needs to be addressed, but 15-20 min dramas usually don’t address them beyond making cringy characters, so like what’s the point?? And it should go without saying that writing gay fiction about your co-workers is gross and not okay! *hands*

But then we get to the skinship. They look so cozy while cuddling together. 😅

This does the trick though! And Lucy dramatically exits, saying how heartbroken she is, and Jiang Zhihao is left utterly baffled as well. 

And that’s the end of ep. 3. (also, junjie runs away, almost gagging, i guess?? but i hope it’s just him pretending he’s grossed out because, otherwise...)

Everything I Watched On Netflix

So this is kind of like a mini-review post, except this time, it’s every kdrama I watched on Netflix this summer.  I had a job that included a lot of late hours with me sitting around on an iPad (don’t ask), and consequently, I plowed through quite a few kdramas.  

Here they are in no particular order:

1)  Reply 1994

My fellow admin, Sarah, has been BUGGING ME SO HARD to watch this drama.  Well, I did, Sarah.  Are you happy?

Pros:  As with all the Reply dramas, the writers really excel at giving us heartwarming characters and poignant relationships.  These slice of life dramas are so adorable and humorous and it’s honestly fascinating to watch the different journeys of these characters over time.  It had a sweet love story and good smooches. And as per usual, Mom and Dad steal the show.  

Cons: It’s a good thing I had HOURS of downtime to dedicate to watching this show, because GOOD LORD THE EPISODES WERE SO MUCH LONGER THAN R1997.  I ran into this same problem with R1988 and I ended up quitting, because I just couldn’t take it.  The love triangle was just lame.  I honestly don’t know how anyone thought Chilbongi was going to end up her love interest.  It was obvious from the second episode who the writers had picked.  I also thought poor Chilbongi and Binggeure got the shaft, as far as character building went.  They got no real story.  It was a shame.

Overall grade: B-, no rewatchability factor for me here.  Episodes too long.  THIS SHOW DESPERATELY NEEDED A GOOD EDITOR.  

2) Descendants of the Sun

This is another one that Sarah has been telling me to watch.  It’s on her “Must Force Fellow Admins To Watch” list, so I figured I might as well get it over with.  What a pleasant surprise!

Pros:  This drama was hilarious!  I laughed so hard when I watched it.  I absolutely adored the main couples, though my heart was definitely more with Dae Young and Myeong Joo than with our Song Song couple.  You can definitely see the chemistry, though!  And what isn’t appealing about a military man and a civilian woman?  Hawt!  Great smooches, too, which is always on my must-have list. :)

(Shameless, but adorable)

Cons:  Not many, honestly.  This drama definitely gets put in my “there were too many episodes” folder, but they were all interesting, at least.  And the subplots in some of the episodes were a bit cheesy, but even the bad guys were hot!

Overall Grade: Solid A.  Great chemistry, comedy, and cuddling.  Super smooches!  Everyone was hot.  I told my friend this show should be called Military Flower Boys. :D

3)  Hello My 20′s (Also known as Age of Youth)

I knew pretty much NOTHING about this drama going in.  It was just random chance that I picked it, but I’m so glad I did!

Pros:  This story is about 5 different girls, but this drama did such a great job highlighting each of the girls’ stories.  I felt like I really got to know each of them by the time the drama was over.  It wasn’t about love, necessarily, but there were hints of all sorts of issues going on here.

Cons: Mostly the ending was the only part I had a beef with.  So many stories left hanging.  But all my ire has abated, because I just found out there is going to be an Age of Youth 2!!!!!

Overall Grade: A-.  Great stories.  Great characters.  The ending was irritating. :)

4) Momo’s Salon

No review for this one.  I have nothing to say.  It’s like 8 eps of 5 minute episodes.  There is no plot and no real character development.  In short, it was TERRIBLE.  

Overall Grade: F++++

5) Beating Again (Falling For Innocence)

When I saw my main guy from One More Happy Ending, and my main girl from I Need Romance 3, I just had to give this one a shot.  Once again, I knew next to nothing about the drama I had picked.  

Pros:  Every time I thought this drama would hit all my least favorite kdrama tropes, the writer would manage to surprise me.  They really managed to turn the kdrama rules on their heads.  The overall story was really nice and I liked all the side characters.

 (These two were so cute together.)

Cons: Too long, too long, TOO LONG.  The plot was often times sooooooo freaking convoluted.  The smooches were so-so.  The main character barely managed to stay out of “unbelievably irritating” territory.

Overall Grade: B-.  Not much to say except that.

6) My Only Love Song

This drama was an unexpected pleasure and a delight to watch.  Short episodes again, 20 of them at 30 mins apiece.  I’m not big on the historicals (as all the admins can attest to) but I don’t mind the fusion ones so much.  And who couldn’t love a time travel drama featuring a bus with its own mind?

Pros: The main couple have such great chemistry, and all the characters were delved into and given plenty of depth.  The “real history” stakes and the need to not fuck up the timeline really made the story compelling.  And it was hilarious.  Both of the main characters are totally full of themselves and they really deserve each other.  The villain was HILARIOUS and I was honestly sad he was a bad guy.  THE SMOOCHES WERE SO GOOD.

Cons: Ummmmm... the ONLY thing that annoyed me was how repetitive it was.  They kept showing the same scenes over and over to highlight the different characters’ perspectives, but with a 30 minute timeframe, it ended up that most of the story was taken up by stuff we already knew.  That was my only beef, though.

Overall grade: A-. Great comedy, fantastic smooches.  Such an original story.  Loved the ending.  Good stuff.

And that’s pretty much all of that.  I did some rewatching (Oh My Ghost and It’s Okay That’s Love, both of which are A+ dramas).  I also have Secret Forest and Third Rate My Way to review soon, but no more time right now.  Happy Watching!
