Meaning of names in Succession

Connor - derived from Irish Conchobar: cú - meaning "hound, dog, wolf" and cobar - "desiring".

The eldest son, lonely wolf, longing for love and appreciation. The (perceived) lack of love from his family and Willa pushed him so far that he doesn't even see that running for president is insane. He's happy that there are Conheads, that he's part of the conversation. And (of course) the dog motif - kicked dog that knows to keep the safe distance, but he's still coming back.

Kendall - valley on the river Kent; ruler of the valley. It probably derives from a Celtic words meaning ‘exalted high’ + ‘image effigy’.

logan is a lord of life… he is the cornerstone of the entire plot. the world (narrative) revolves around him but it’s shown time & again that parts of the real world actually do revolve around him. he built himself up from nothing and he has the money and power to prove it. but in dominating Life (wealth, power, success) in the world he extracts it from his own character. his fucked-up children revolve their lives around him, but they hate him. people worship him but no one actually enjoys being around him. the world stopped when he died but his family wasn’t even there.

anyway kendall is a prince of doom. by virtue of being the eldest (whos connor?) hes literally set up for failure and he absolutely knows it. i also enjoy him being a destructive class & trying to emulate logan by ghosting life but it’s just not gonna happen LOL. by being the “main” of the 4 kids the narrative follows him more often so we see wayyy more of his huge swings and misses. also i Fundamentally believe that an important part of being a prince is 1) suicidal ideation and 2) a weird relationship with water.

shiv… i really don’t know. i like thinking of her as a life player bc she is the most similar to logan but i’m not sure what class. thief, for the vriska similarities? like she had a perfectly fine job in politics (on the liberal side despite being born high-class and not needing any sort of change to come from within the government. it’s not the politics she wants to change, it’s her shitass family. sound familiar?). but she threw it away to literally try and steal the company from under the boys’ noses. no one can steal from a Lord, but it would have tasted so sweet.

Top 5 kendall roy disasters!

Oh my god, there are so many to choose from, anon, hahaha, OKAY:

5 - Kendall Roy failed bearhug because he accidentally kills a waiter. Obviously disastrous professionally and psychologically, but it also triggers such an incredibly good season of television in s2 that I barely see it as a disaster at all. 6/10.

4 - Kendall Roy failed birthday party disaster. On the one hand, it feels like it should be the biggest disaster, but he didn't actually crucify himself on stage and also had the brief flicker of self-awareness to realise the only important present at the party would be the one from his children which shows an uncharacteristic amount of conscience and restraint in staving off disaster, and luckily his siblings were all so embarassing and mean at this party they could share the disaster load. (Except Connor, Conhead 4ever) 7/10.

3 - Kendall Roy confusing Sophie Iwobi dragging him on a late night show as an act of love and desperately trying to be in on the joke before crying in one of the tech rooms. Complete abused childhood regression disaster, it h u r t s me. 9/10.

2.5 - Kendall Roy telling his siblings they need an intervention at his own intervention like, twelve hours after he almost killed himself. 11/10 Classic Kendall Roy disaster moment.

2 - Kendall Roy Stakeholders Meeting. Literally can't talk about it, he is so deeply mortifying in this episode and I'm not sure which is worse, that moment where he's on stage behind Karl or the moment where he is stood up by his own dad. Only thing that saves this for me is that the joke is kind of on the Roy's too because as much as they all would deny it, you know Kendall never would've fucked up Logan's meds like Kerry, and you also know that Logan never would've trusted Connor, Roman or Shiv with it in the way he would've his number one boy, and they all know that too. 1000/10 Kendall Roy disaster.

i had a conversation recently that made me realize that if i had to personally converse with any member of the roy family, by far the most bearable to me would be connor. he sort of reminds me of this like 40 year old guy i met at a party once who noticed my necklace that had the magician tarot card as a pendant, and he unprompted went on this long speech about how every person fulfills different roles in each other’s lives and how he is the hermit who comes briefly into my life, gives me some profound wisdom, and leaves once his purpose is fulfilled. i do think about him often. but anyways. i feel like connor’s lack of a hand in the family business and kind of rejection by logan has both clearly harmed him, given that he has an almost kendall level of desperation for logan’s attention at times, but also kind of saved him from being essentially a self-preservation-by-any-means-necessary robot like his siblings, you know? like even if he is kind of a pseudo-liberal creep who is barely competent in his desired field (not that his siblings are really any better, he’s just more blatant and funnier about it), he’s really the most Person-Like of any member of the family. he cares selflessly, and he makes earnest attempts to connect with people who can’t be useful to him, and those are things that none of his siblings can really say for themselves. conheads rise up

Speaking as someone who has recently slipped & fallen into a massive vat of big brother Connor feels and also plans to study childhood development. All I can think of now is that when the golden trio got hurt in their infancy/toddlerhood (scraped knee, fall, etc) he was probably who they wanted for comfort.

Anon!! I am right there in that vat of feelings with you. I've talked about it on here a few times, but I became my brother's guardian when I was in my early twenties and he was about 14/15, and as a result stories where siblings step up when parents step out really resonate with me. The fact that the show is making that this understated touchstone with Connor and Kendall, Roman and Shiv is just striking such a chord in me as a result. I really love it a lot.

I love, love, love your headcanon that Connor was the one the baby golden trio wanted when they got hurt too, especially since you know they wouldn't have gotten much of anything from Logan or Caroline.

I've been thinking a lot too about Connor's social circle lately, and about how it's this odd sort of thing that he seems to actually be really gregarious between his fast friendship with Maxim Pierce and the way the Conheads have started gravitating towards him, and how it's kind of at odds with this sense of him having had to pay a woman to stay with him? It's really given me this headcanon that Connor's had this sort of awkward socialisation because he went from being the protected and isolated lone heir for Logan until he was 15 when Kendall was born, and then his life sort of shifted to being, at least for a while, about them (arguably still is - gosh, he's the first person to drop everything and come whenever any of them really need him - think him being Shiv's go-to back-up with Marcia in 1.02!)

It makes me feel like he lost this chapter of partying, of spring breaks and holidays at a gilfriend's place, because he always went home. Always needed to get back on weekends for Shiv's first steps or Roman's first words or to help Kendall get his show and tell ready for kindegarten. Had to be there for these tiny little people his brickwall of a dad made with this sharp-edged woman, and it sucked sometimes to go back to college during the week and see his friends with new inside jokes and the girl he was flirting with holding hands with someone else, but he didn't regret it, not when he got hugs from Kendall and special, stamp-decorated letters from Shiv and play-doh-pipe-cleaner-googly-eyed creatures from Roman.
