canadians specifically are so goddamn annoying when it comes to this shit i saw another one say “children don’t die in schools here” yeah they just find 200+ of their bodies buried under the schools up there! and people still smuggle guns in canada! you still have gun violence! stop using dead children to pretend like you’re a superior country when you have just as much violence, racism, and hate as the united states. instead of constantly comparing and gloating, try donating to the organizations made to try and stop future school shootings and violence against children from happening. and btw
In Toronto, Canada’s largest census metropolitan area (CMA), the proportion of violent crimes that were firearm-related (4.7%) was the second-highest among CMAs. Its rate of firearm-related violent crime (43.2 incidents per 100,000 population) rose 36% from 2021 and 93% since a low in 2013.
In 2022, the rate of firearm-related violent crime was 36.7 incidents per 100,000 population, an 8.9% increase from 2021 (33.7 incidents per 100,000 population). This is the highest rate recorded since comparable data were first collected in 2009.
All provinces and territories have seen the rate of firearm-related violent crime increase since the low in 2013. The largest increases were recorded in the Northwest Territories (+303%), Saskatchewan (+165%), Yukon (+149%) and New Brunswick (+126%).

While I'm Leicesterposting today: headcanon + theory on the Crescent Moon War and House Ordelia being a part of the Roundtable.
So on the Leicester emblem, you can pretty clearly see symbols and Crests of Riegan, Goneril, Gloucester, and Daphnel:
Tumblr media
Implying that they lead the independence war, which pretty much lines up with what you'd expect. Oldest houses in the region with the most clout and power, access to Relics, etc. Daphnel eventually got kicked off and all that, but yeah.
Meanwhile, there's one Roundtable house that's not represented on the emblem, one that was presumably added after the war: Ordelia.
And in Lysithea and Lorenz's supports, we hear that Ordelia is (about) 300 years old:
Tumblr media
Lines up approximately with the Crescent Moon War, which occured from 881 to 901. So I think it's fairly reasonable to assume that House Ordelia was established and admitted into the Roundtable due to their accomplishments in the independence war.
And speaking of that, Crescent Moon War lasted pretty damn long: 20 years. Someone born at the beginning of the war could have been fighting in battles by its final years.
In contrast, the war for Faerghan independence lasted 4 years, and the Unification War we see in-game lasted 5 years. War of Heroes took nearly 70 years, but tbf that was against a bunch of people who drank fresh magic dragon blood and presumably were much stronger than their descendants.
There are multiple explanations for that, one that's more or less confirmed in canon being that there were conflicts within territories as to whether stay a part of the Kingdom or not, as shown by the Daphnel-Galatea split. So it wasn't a neat "big battles with big national army against big national army," it was more like a bunch of civil wars, which obviously get messy.
I think it's also pretty likely that the Empire would have tried to intervene and get Leicester back, which would have made sense because remember: Leicester didn't break away alongside the Faerghan territories, they rebelled and got annexed after the Kingdom was established. Not only would that have been a severe wound to the Empire's pride, it would have been a fresh wound, because the whole incident was only 80 years ago, as of the start of the Crescent Moon War.
Btw I think the whole business above has some interesting implications about how the Leicester region always liked to be autonomous, and I find it pretty realistic given the geography: they have Airmid River to the south and Oghma Mountains to the northwest as natural borders. It must have been a hassle to get there from Enbarr and Fhirdiad; feels pretty likely that they would've been left more to their own devices and grown to enjoy that, especially when it came to trade and profits. (My personal headcanon is that both the Leicester Rebellion and Crescent Moon War kicked off because the Leicesterians didn't want to pay taxes to Enbarr/Fhirdiad lmao)
Anyway, back to Ordelia and the fact it was established during the Crescent Moon War, then incorporated into the Roundtable afterwards, in relation to my theory about another reason why the war took so long:
I like to think that the Crescent Moon War was about a bunch of warlords fighting each other for the opportunity to become noble lords, and on top of that the potential to become a part of the Roundtable, as much as it was about driving out Faerghan (and maybe Adrestian) loyalists.
There's nothing in canon text to support this, but I hold this headcanon for a couple of reasons. First, I think the country my blorbos (Golden Deer) are from should get to suck because it's fun. Also Lysithea is my blorbo of blorbos (alongside Claude) so it's very moe to think that she is the descendant of a ruthless warlord who slaughtered a bunch of civilians. (And I think Lysithea should get to follow in those footsteps during the war but that's for a different day)
Second, I think it adds an additional layer to Lysithea's personality and how she wants to be recognized for her own effort and skill, not "being a prodigy" or having two Crests. There's the fact the two Crests are gonna kill her at a young age, yeah, but also, what if the "we earned this by our own skill" was the founding basis and pride of House Ordelia? As much as she intends to abolish her house and give up her title as nobility for realistic reasons, what if that's the part of the family dignity that she won't/can't let go of? Stuff like that.
Third, gives some additional context on why Leicester seems somewhat more flexible on social mobility compared to the other two countries. Never ask the non-Elite Leicesterian noble houses (so everyone aside from the four featured on the emblem) what their ancestors were doing during and before the Crescent Moon War! The answer to the former is "slaughtering rival militias and also civilians" and the answer to the latter is "Insolence!! (translation: idk man they weren't nobles back then)"
Finally, it adds some beautiful irony and layers to the Leicesterian neuroses about the "savage Almyrans." Part projection, because what was 20 years of internal fighting and killing if not savagery? Part cope for humiliation, because Leicester had a hard time fending off the "savages" to the point they immediately had to go and ask the countries they'd just broken away from for help.
And finally, part looking into a mirror, because if Almyrans, with their warrior culture, heard that Leicester decided who the new lords would be by literally fighting it out?
They just might say, "Ah, you get it, we're not so different, after all," and the Leicesterians would know that was true.

On the '3 things' asks:
#11, #18, and #34
Tumblr media
Thanks so much girl!!!
(omg, you're breaking my heart with that gif!) 💖
Anyways! To the answers! I'm sorry to inform you that it has turned into an article, I cannot write about books I'm passionate about concisely. So buckle up I guess?!!?
#11- 3 books I would recommend that everyone reads!
So I'm gonna put down books that I also think most people ( if not all) Could read, because a.k.a Lord of the Rings is not easy for a lot of people, for various reasons surrounding pacing and whatnot, though I highly recommend that one as well!!!
First book would be Sastun by Dr. Rosita Arvigo. It is a woonnnnderful book about her apprenticeship with a Mayan H'men. a.k.a shaman-like healer, who reminds us that the spiritual and the physical Cannot Be Separated! A very easy read that will blow your mind when it comes to your body and how you should treat it and it will forever change your perspective on Western Medicine. One warning though, if you do not actually know beforehand about what is and isn't "allowed" in Catholicism, do not base your future knowledge of it on this, as these healers really mix together Mayan worship and Catholicism. I do not judge them for this, but please be aware that not everything that they recount doing in this book is necessarily okay for Catholics.
Second book is Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. This entire series was my comfort book growing up, but I recommend the first as it truly is the cornerstone of the series. ( FYI My personal favourite is actually the last book, Rita of Ingleside.) :) A story about girl with a wild imagination and longing for a kindred spirit, nothing better to dive into!
Third book will be Mexican Martyrdom by Rev. Fr. Wilfrid Parsons. I was obsessed with the Cristero War as a young teen ( thanks to my mother getting me the movie, For Greater Glory, when I was 12 because she knew I liked war movies...I know, weird 12 year old girl, I was a tomboy okay...) This is a period of history that, if I remember correctly, is very rarely talked about because there's a lot of misunderstandings and bad blood surrounding it. But this book was written by a contemporary catholic reverend who was in and out of Mexico while it was happening and was acquainted with some of the "people in charge" shall we say. So it's quite reliable and helps clear some of the murk clouding this patch of history. ( Also, I highly recommend watching the aforementioned movie, For Greater Glory ( 2012), (which you will very much enjoy if you are Oscar Isaac fan btw) and another thing I rec is this short film from around the same time, called Cristeros y Federales, link is here. ( Also, this one has the ever lovely Tenoch Huerta starring! ) ;)
#18- 3 dream jobs from my childhood
Ummm I got at least two. I wanted to be a religious Sister who was also a nurse and I would go help third world countries. Then I realized that heat existed....
And then I wanted to become a famous stage actress!
There was also a bout of wanting to leave everything behind and become a mountain (wo)man/trapper in the Northwest Territories. Dunno if that counts!! ( esp. since I still wanna do that half the time...)
#34-3 people from history who inspire me!
I might stay short and sweet with these, because most have got some, shall we say 'ugly history' attached to them, through no fault of their own.
Pocahontas, the Algonquin Princess. Really inspired me to respect and love and ally myself with nature.
St. Joan of Arc. Peasant girl turned saviour of France who stuck to her principles no matter what.
Marina Raskova, founder and leader of the ' Night Witches' a.k.a the elite soviet pilot regiment who are amoung the most badass ladies ever. Check them out! Their story is so cool!

RS RAMBLE HOUR
Lots and lots and LOTS of notes about Radiant Souls Chapters 1-3!
THE CHAPTER TITLES
Apart from the prologue (Chapter 1), all chapter titles have unique names. Many of the titles have references, word play, and idioms all while trying to encompass the subject or feel of the chapter, so I really try to stretch my creativity.
Chapter 2, "It's Apocalypse O'Clock Somewhere", is a reference to the Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett song "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere". The song (which is very fun BTW and is seen on many vacation playlists) references the common saying as a way to justify day drinking after doing a lot of work. Isyris, similar to the song, justifies his day drinking (and vacation in general) as an "I did a lot of work so I deserve this" sort of thing.
However, the title references the apocalypse happening in place of the time. Interestingly, while the saying suggests that locations have a different times to justify day drinking, NYC and Aruba actually share the same timezone. This illustrates that Isyris is sitting on his ass drinking while in NYC his family is getting pummeled by alien invaders, and also illustrates the urgency. The apocalypse more or less comes to Isyris' attention whether he likes it or not, and it was only a matter of time.
Chapter 3, "So Long, Paradise", is a lot more simple. While there's no specific reference or pun I had in mind, paradise is often considered a place to be gained or lost, to find or to leave. In Isyris' case, it was cut off before he was ready. (Funny that even before he knew about the invasion, his paradise wasn't quite perfect. He knew something was missing and was trying to force his way through enjoyment.) He does not explicitly say goodbye to Aruba, but he takes one last look at the sunset. He's so dramatic lol. Meanwhile, the gargoyles get to spend all the time they want in paradise, chanting it as they run off with Isyris' card.
ISLAND LANGUAGE
Aruba is your typical case of European colonization. It is currently a state of The Netherlands, though historically Spain and England also had control over the island at some point. Isyris speaks neither Dutch nor Papiamento, which are the main languages of the Caribbean Dutch island states (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao), but the English-speaking tourism there is well-established. Most people on the island (especially if they work in the tourism industry) speak multiple languages.
Isyris was in Orangestad, the capital city, and he was also more on the northwest coastline where the majority of ritzy hotels and resorts are. Most of his interaction with others had been with those in the tourism industry (tour and museum guides, workers at hotels, bars and restaurants, etc.) who spoke English, so he had no trouble with language.
He also went in early June, so it's right at the start of summer vacation for many American families (and himself). The location and timing meant he was around a bunch of other English-speaking tourists, which is why he was able to understand others around him and why the TV at the grill & bar was tuned in to an American news station.
YOU THINK I HAVE MONEY IN THIS ECONOMY?
Isyris does not really have much Aruba currency, the Aruba florin, because he's simply using his credit card for most things. He does know how credit cards work in general (he understands debt and interest), so he's not necessarily pulling money out of nowhere because he knows what he needs to pay back.
But yes, he is certainly living slightly past his means by going on this trip. Isyris is riding into dangerous territory (he has not worked long enough on the surface to gain significant savings, hence the credit card usage). He's knows he's at risk but figures that because he is a working man that after summer vacation he will be back to the cafeteria grind, so it isn't the end of the world and surely he can pay it off with time.
He's not being overly safe as it is, but this is because he has a background of wealth and is still getting used to, you know, not being rich. It takes time to kick habits and old ways of thinking, especially when you have then suddenly do not have. The idea of getting a summer vacation was sprung on him so suddenly that he was like "Yeah you know what I do deserve Me Time the moment I get a break from work" and did not think much about it beyond that. Just use the credit card and don't think too hard about it. Speaking of which...
CREDIT CARD WOES
The goyles, Merry and Pippin, don't really understand credit cards. Not because they can't understand it or that Yōkai don't have similar concepts in their society (canon Yōkai taxes and currency exist, after all), they're just idiots. They're confused because Isyris no longer lives a life of luxury yet can "pull money out [of the card] like magic", so they're under the impression that he chooses to live this way as part of his Soft Good Guy shtick. They (particularly Merry) are frustrated with this and think he needs some serious help. Pippin is a little more cautious, not wanting to suffer any more of Isyris' bouts of anger, but Merry will gladly criticize his boss for it, especially because his financial decisions affect them.
Merry also took Isyris leaving the note as a sign for them to do whatever they need to do on their own (instead of doing what Isyris meant, which was to come home immediately as soon as they could get a flight). Isyris had to rush home sooner and didn't care to take the time to drag them back, which he knew would have inevitably been a Whole Ordeal. It'd be like trying to get a cat or dog into its travel crate when it already knows it's going to the vet or some equally unpleasant place.
But this all feeds into the goyles not feeling remorseful (or fearful) for using Isyris' credit card the way they are. They're about to massively fuck this man over financially by being cute little idiots lol.
Oh well! It's as Honey said in Chapter 8, at least Isyris doesn't have rent to pay anymore. When Isyris lamented that he doesn't have anything besides the clothes on his back and in his suitcase, it's not really an exaggeration. He and Angel lost everything in the apartment fire. For Angel it was a far more serious and meaningful loss, as she had been living there for a majority of her life. For Isyris it hadn't been long, although he had managed to slowly turn the dingy apartment into something more presentable. But what little he has is gone, and now on top of it, his debt will be massive. Oops!
WASTIN' AWAY AGAIN IN MARGARITAVILLE
Out of all the details to get hung up on during writing the first chapters, what alcoholic drink Isyris had (and was originally just a long set-up for the spit take) was one of the hardest. In fact I left it as "[drink]" in my draft for the longest time lol. "A tropical drink that's not piña colada because that's too basic" was my goal. I went through a lot of cocktail sites to find some good options. A drink called Aruba Ariba was on the table because it's an emblematic drink of Aruba, only found there, but I felt that it was a little too on the nose.
After a lot of thought, I went with a Mai Tai. (I've never had one but it honestly sounds delicious.) It's not a Caribbean-specific drink, in fact historically more a US west coast thing, but it's associated with the sort of tropical commercialism that the area of where Isyris was staying advertises. It's touristy and amusingly inauthentic, just like his general vacation experience.
THE PORTAL SIGIL
I put a fair amount of research into the sigil Isyris makes to portal himself to NYC, and I made it accurate for what I planned. All of the symbols he made in the sigil are important. They're astronomical or alchemical symbols, representing different celestial bodies or elements.
The unit of measurement he uses, scrobi, is a made-up Yōkai one. But I based it on an ancient Egyptian/Greek/Roman unit of measurement called a schoenus, which was used for surveying. This was fairly convenient for the story because roughly the amount of miles he had to travel almost rounded out nicely to an even number, but not quite. (Isyris thinking it was exact, along with other tiny imprecise measurements or alignments, led to his little Upper Bay Adventure in the following chapter.)
When Isyris spun the compass-like sigil to align all the symbols with the celestial bodies, I had him actually align with what would have probably been in the sky. I used a fun website tool to figure out what stars would have been in the sky (even though they couldn't be seen, as it was still light out/evening), at the time and location he was, which was Oranjestad, Aruba, in early June. So the constellations that he listed as being at the zenith (right above his head) are actually accurate.
The idea is that for sigil portal magic to travel long distances, it needs reference points. Whatever symbol is put in the center becomes the main reference. In Isyris' case, he's on Earth, so he uses the Earth symbol in the center. All the other symbols around in the different tiers are how to align it. He aligns it with the Sun and with the more distant stars in the constellations, puts in the distance he wants to travel, and tells it that it's crossing land and sea.
There is one symbol in the sigil that isn't clearly defined on purpose. That one's special. You'll see.
OVERALL
Despite Isyris' dangerous money situation and his soon-to-be massive credit card debt, this big dumb sheep is still extremely catered to, just as any American tourist often is. While he didn't do nearly all the things he lied about much later in Chapter 8, nor did he have as much fun as he wished he had, he still got to experience a fairly nice vacation up until the point of hearing about the invasion.
He did in fact get to sit on the beach and see beautiful views, go to restaurants and bars, go on tours, etc., but he did so alone. He pretends like he was interacting with locals or something (or pretends that people think he, a painfully average American dad tourist in the eyes of others, is noteworthy and worth approaching) when that is very much not the case. While he was lying to make Masaru jealous, one has to wonder if a part of him did want a grander vacation experience that included other people in the picture. And not just the pretty women.
He didn't truly stay in Aruba that long, though; it had only been a few days. Had the goyles not taken and used his credit card, the trip would have been of little consequence to him, especially since he did not stay for the full duration that he planned.
Sadly, things do not always turn out the way you want them to when your name is Baron Isyris Draxum. Even if you do actually have your heart in the right place for once by returning home immediately to make sure your family is okay.

I would like to see you draw the Canadian provinces and territories! I love your art style btw
Hello! Thank you! bsjdksk
To draw all the provinces is a lot Q Q
I did Canada and the Four corners for now!Again thank you and sorry, I'll eventually do every province as time goes on!
Tumblr media
Canada‘s national animal is the beaver so I gave them those traits!
They were under the kingdom of France at first (there were five colonies, with Canada the most developed colony that was divided into the districts of Québec, Trois-Rivières, and Montréa )
Then they were given to Great Britain and Spain in 1763 under the Treaty of Paris!
I also read a bit about the Burning of Washington, but I need to study it more deeply!
And they got independence in July 1, 1867!
Here are the Four corners as chibi!
Tumblr media
(They are the provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan and the territories of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut!)

Hello, I'm curious about your opinion on the emperor Li Feng. You can go into spoiler territory, if your opinion involves some plot points that occur near the end of the novel~~
So this has been in my inbox for LITERALLY MONTHS, and here’s my possibly unpopular opinion --- as of end of season 2 to the end of the book/audio drama, Li Feng is right about pretty much everything, also, Li Feng is not at all a villain.
While the former emperor was capable of sending assassins to kill his former trusted general based on rumours, and could rightfully be called a villain, Li Feng is incapable of this. I'd like you to sit in his chair for a minute, and consider his story (and the entirety of the SPL story) from a classical chinese perspective:
Li Feng and Gu Yun are heroes, Chang Geng is the villain, and SPL is a tragedy.
LONG spoilery meta under cut
Li Feng is your standard Confucian gentleman --- he fulfilled his duty, which is more than most emperors will give you. After all, what an emperor has is the Mandate of Heaven, and it is Gu Yun’s duty to serve him and the empire and Li Feng’s right to kill him whenever he wants as long as he has proper (even if trivial) reasons. But Li Feng studied the sages and believed in the old philosophies --- everything belongs to the empire, and he administers the state as the MASTER/OWNNER of the empire, not a CARETAKER of it.
He worked himself to the bone, he was filial to his father, he never shorted his little brother on festival gifts and let him do basically what he wanted throughout his youth, going so far as to let him not marry because CG didn’t want to, he cares about his family right up to the point where they turn on him (or when he's SURE they had turned on him), and lastly he fulfilled his duty to his heir by attempting to get rid of all threats to Li Zheng’s throne: Gu Yun, the old aristocratic families (including Fang Qin and his father), and Chang Geng.
And you're probably thinking wait a second he what.
Consider this --- the entire last part of the book is not Fang Qin vs Chang Geng. It's actually Li Feng vs Chang Geng. This is a fight Li Feng could never have won, because he's by nature a Confucian gentleman and would never order his own brother killed, unless that brother tried to kill him first. But Chang Geng is perfectly capable of that. He's admitted it in narrative.
Chang Geng has pretty much everyone on his side: the military, the merchant guild, the Lingshu academy, everyone who works for the Grand Council. Li Feng has himself, an 11 year old son whom he's forcing to grow up by throwing him into court assembly since last week, and ... not much else. He knows this. He doesn't even have himself. He knows he's going to die soon, and the only way Li Zheng can hold onto the throne and not made a puppet is if the old aristocratic families who’ve grown to big for their breeches, Gu Yun, AND Chang Geng goes. Once they do, since neither Chang Geng and Gu Yun have heirs, all the other court powers will shift to serve the crown prince, Li Zheng.
Here's Li Feng's endgame plan: - He lets Fang Qin's dad go ahead and send off that diplomatic delegation to kill Gu Yun, while holding onto evidence that they're doing so. - The foreign enemies are on their last legs, so they'll win that war anyway without Gu Yun - It is in the aristocratic families' interest to make peace with the invaders and end the war. BUT - Li Feng will not let that happen. He now has evidence that they conspired to kill Gu Yun, who's great Liang's war god by this point. They all GET BEHEADED. - the war ends with the invaders capitulating and paying reparations. - Without Gu Yun and any military power, Chang Geng's influence over the court is cut in half. - The war is over, dissolve the Grand Council. By then, Li Feng expects that Chang Geng has made enough enemies that someone will get rid of him. - He'll make someone intelligent, young, and pure as grand tutor (Xu Ling), and make the empress regent. If Chang Geng lives, he'll be assigned some land VERY FAR from the capital (south coast, probably, or northwest in Xinjiang).
The problem with this plan is that Li Feng is not a villain. He's not ruthless enough so Chang Geng counters and makes his move first. Even at the very last minute of his life, he's incredulous that his brother would use Li Zheng as a hostage to steal the throne.
He’s incapable of thinking that his brother, no matter how good at court intrigue he may be, would disregard familial ties (and Li Feng has fulfilled his duties in those ties) in his pursuit of power, because he himself is incapable of doing so. Li Feng is very intelligent but unable to think outside of the Confucian philosophy box, and that’s what kills him in the end.
So that's my thoughts on Li Feng. The poor man. If only his father acted like him, Great Liang would have had a lot less problems.
Btw, while I say that Chang Geng would have totally killed his nephew and his brother in order to seize the throne, I also don't think it's his own morality that stopped him from doing so --- he just doesn't want Gu Yun to hate him.

i can understand your hatred of the mercator projection now... i learnt more about it and it's so DUMB. also i saw a person being like "russia is so big :0" today in tumblr using the mercator projection and russia IS big! but. not that big compared to other countries and china shouldn't look that small right next to it when it's literally the 3rd biggest country... i hate this it's so inaccurate im angy >:(
idek when i last talked about the mercator projection but whining about it seems like something i would do lol
also yes the mercator projection is! bad! iirc it was invented as a way to make planning long ocean voyages easier during the 16th century? like the goal was to cut the world up into squares of equal size so that europeans could like. know where they’re going and not die and stuff. coincidentally they ignored that the earth is round and distorted the absolute fuck out of the poles to the extent that the drc is like one of the only accurately sized countries. countries around the drc are pretty accurate too in terms of size but the borders are all in the wrong places, and africa look way smaller than it actually is, comparatively. and thats not a coincidence btw, one of the reasons that the mercator projection is so widely used in the west is that it makes western countries look massive, like how you said russia looked big and china looked small and how greenland looks like its of a similar size to africa when its absolutely fucking not. also the way they took the northwest territories of canada and went stremch...no!!
anyway i think one of the better map projections is this one, because it allows for more accurate bulging to the sort one would find on a sphere. though it could be misleading about the size of the ocean i think its a bit more accurate for being a political map

Sleep Tight For Me...I’m Gone
Tumblr media
Lately I’ve been writing these Better Days Are A Toenail Away™️ posts in Microsoft Word, selecting all and changing the font to Garamond, which is so readable and beautiful, and posting the Word docs, paragraphs by paragraph, inside these Tumblr drafts. It makes things look nice, to my old fashioned sensibilities, but fixing errors is a time-consuming and needlessly convoluted four-step process.
First, I have to copy, then delete the paragraph containing the error. Then I open the doc. and paste the error-ridden paragraph back into Word. After I find and fix the error, I need to save it and copy and paste it back into the post. It's time-consuming because I’m not just copying a paragraph. As you can see from more recent post, what I copied looked more like a photograph of the paragraph, not the words themselves written in Tumblr’s default font Arial. For an example of this, see below. I like the way it looks like old newspaper clippings. I posted an article about how my fent dealer John Smith kept getting robbed, and had resorted to putting a machete in front of his front door as a way of preventing this, a lever of sorts, which is plainly visible in the video I posted,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So today I’ve given up on trying to make my posts look like books or zines, and have given into the Tumblr font, which is about as pretty as a horse with his snout shot off.
There are two much longer posts I’m working on right now, one about Nirvana and one about Soundgarden, respectively, and how both bands were very unlike their public perception, but those posts are taking a lot of work so I’m putting them on the backburner because today is some dumbass corporation’s day where it tries to synthesize mental health and profit and the end result is as baldly capitalist and clumsy as you would expect.
I’m not gonna name the company, or repeat their stupid fucking slogan. As far as I can tell (which isn't very far), talking about my trauma has never made me feel better. And in fact it has sometimes made me feel worse, because in telling you what hurts and scares me, I’ve given a part of myself away that I can’t get back. When you’re like me, and you’ve lost everything multiple times, sometimes the only form of power you have is how you choose, or do not choose, to tell your story. And in a world where everybody wants to tell “their truth,” silence is power.
You don’t get to know me, sorry. I’m not gonna hand you my life, both my bad and good experiences, and conclude: “Welp, that’s why I’m so fucked up. Case closed.”
Honestly, I used to be a little confused, or miffed that my former partner (who is an amazing person btw, in every respect) almost never spoke about some of the traumatic things she’d experienced in her past. I took it as a sign that she either didn’t trust me, or she didn’t think I would be a sympathetic listener, or the mere fact of my gender precluded her from sharing because I couldn’t truly understand what it was she had gone through. It’s not like I ever asked her to talk about it, but I did say, once or twice, “hey if you ever wanna talk about that stuff, I’m around.” She never took me up on it, and I let it go.
But as I watched her, and saw her life unfold, over the years we spent together, I began to realize I wasn’t exactly in any position to be telling her how to live her life or how to be mentally healthy. After all, she has found success in a number of avenues, both creative and occupational, and I’ve found neither. I'm not saying the fact that she didn't talk much about her trauma is the reason for her success. I'm saying that she's forged a better path through life than I have, and maybe I should take a cue from that.
She never told me what to do, per se. It was more like living by example. But because I’m pretty dense, and a severe addict, our time together actually sorta reminds me now of that Cornell lyric from his first record: She’s going to change the world. But she can’t change me.
I have certainly found that talking about how shitty my life is only makes me feel more shitty, not free, or unburdened, or better. If you wanna talk about your problems, and you find it helpful, more power to you. Just don’t wait for a corporation to tell you it’s okay to not be okay.
When Chris Cornell died I was so shocked. Of all the grunge icons he seemed the most stable, and he'd survived the rise and fall of two major label rock bands. If anyone had survived the media machine that chewed up and spat out Staley, Cobain, and to a lesser extent Andrew Wood and Shannon Hoon, it was Cornell. He would be the last guy to support hashtag activism like #StarbucksMyLifeSucks. Chris Cornell actually loved to fuck with the best laid plans of corporate rats. Molson once had a few promotional concerts in Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories, called Molson Canadian Rocks Arctic, with both Hole and Soundgarden playing to a crowd of flown-in grunge fans and bemused locals. But the whole anti-corporate thing grunge was known for actually came through when Courtney Love told the crowd she “use[d] Molson Canadian to douche.” Lol. Here’s a photo of Love arriving in Tuktoyatuk.
Tumblr media
Cornell told the same people “so we’re here because of some beer company? Labatt’s?” Both artists’ jabs are funny. Cornell’s was a bit more subtle, but that’s what Cornell was like.
So today’s post is about Chris Cornell’s suicide, more specifically the media’s reaction to it. For whatever reason, when Cornell died, every single news outlet, from CNN to Fox to CBC, posted “Black Hole Sun,” as if it’s the only song he ever fucking wrote, or – and this is far worse – the only song he wrote that’s worth hearing. The problem with this is more than twofold or threefold. It's fucking hydraheaded.
Not only is “Black Hole Sun” a mediocre piece of music, it’s a complete misrepresentation of Soundgarden’s sound.
Now, I’m a huge fan of the A.V. Club series HateSong, in which public figures gleefully talk shit about the one song they hate more than any other song in the world. The Max Bemis (Say Anything) one where he talks about Nirvana’s “Rape Me” as a terrible rewrite of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is terrific, but comedian Anthony Jeselnik’s HateSong takes “Black Hole Sun” apart, and I love it. I think the best line is: I think the more I hear it, the worse it gets. AVC: After the song became a huge hit, Chris Cornell said that he’d written it in about 15 minutes. AJ: I totally believe that. I don’t believe that Soundgarden likes that song. Like, I remember Eminem once said that he knew his song “My Name Is” was going to be a huge hit because the first time he heard it he was annoyed. It’s something about an annoying song that just grabs onto people. But I don’t think that anyone likes “Black Hole Sun.” I’ve never heard of anyone who likes it. I don’t understand why it gets played so much. It’s become a summer jam, and it’s not a summer song at all. Jeselnik is right that Soundgarden didn’t think much of the song. Guitarist Kim Thayil wasn’t kidding when he disparagingly called it the “Dream On” of their live show. And Cornell himself, known for a meticulous approach to his songwriting, had admitted that with “Black Hole Sun”was “probably the closest to me just playing with words for words’ sake, of anything I’ve written. I guess it worked for a lot of people who heard it, but I have no idea how you'd begin to take that one literally.” I mean it’s obvious from the opening lines that Cornell is just playing with words and how they sound: in my eyes/indisposed/in disguises no one knows What songs would have been more appropriate for Cornell’s untimely death? Glad you asked! Cuz there’s like…fucking at least ten that would have been better. I’m not tryna be one of those “the deep album cuts are better maaaaaan,” but with Soundgarden, it happens to be true. With some bands, the single are their best work. With other bands, the singles are the hors d’oeuvres for the entrees. So what deep cuts would have celebrated Cornell’s death a bit better? Well, to begin with, Superunknown’s strange and stately closer “Like Suicide” would have worked, for obvious reasons.
youtube
“Tighter and Tighter,” a song that is actually about the moment of death and what it might feel like, is one of my all-time fav Soundgarden songs. Not only is it a creepy and prescient prediction of what Cornell’s death by hanging himself may have felt like, it’s opening line is a good description of the personification of death: Shadow face/Blowing smoke and talking wind
Another sample lyric: “A sucking holy wind will take me from this bed tonight/and bloody wits another hits me and I have to say goodbye/sleep tight for me, I’m gone/and I hope it’s  a sweet ride/here for me tonight/cuz I’m feel I’m going/feel I’m slowing down.”
The morning after Cornell’s death hit the news my buddy and bandmate James told me that en route to work his phone, which was playing music randomly through his car speakers, landed on “Tighter and Tighter” and he had to pull over because he was tearing up.
youtube
“Fell On Black Days” is another song about depression and mortality. Cornell had the following to say about the song: “Fell on Black Days” was like this ongoing fear I’ve had for years ... It's a feeling that everyone gets. You're happy with your life, everything’s going well, things are exciting—when all of a sudden you realize you’re unhappy in the extreme, to the point of being really, really scared. There's no particular event you can pin the feeling down to, it's just that you realize one day that everything in your life is fucked!
Now, if that’s not a cogent and even-tempered explanation of suicidal thoughts, what is? Why else would Cornell have admitted to being “really really scared” by his depression unless he knew what that depression could ultimately leasd to? Here’s some lyrics to “Fell on Black Days.” Dig the high literary use of “whomsoever” and “whatsoever.” Whatsoever I’ve feared has come to life Whatsoever I fought off became my life Just when every day seemed to greet me with a smile sunspots have faded and now I’m doing time cuz I fell on black days
Whomsoever I’ve cured I’ve sickened now Whomsoever I’ve cradled...I put you down I’m a searchlight soul they say but I can’t see it in the night I’m only faking when I get it right I sure don’t mind a change but I fell on black days how would I know that this could be my fate?
youtube
Eagle-eared listeners might think this version different from the album version. They are right. The rendition in the video was recorded live off the floor @ Bad Animals, the Seattle studio owned by Heart, where Soundgarden would record Down on the Upside.
“Boot Camp” is a scary meditation about loss of agency that for years was tied with Zeppelin’s “I'm Gonna Crawl” for Creepiest Song to Cap a Discography, until Soundgarden reunited and released King Animal.
“Taree” is about ghost light, influencing events after dying and features Cornell’s most exhausted, convincing “yeah” @ 2:57.
“Applebite” is a Matt Cameron-penned ponderous clunker about Adam’s original expulsion from Eden. Doomy and death-laden.
“Let Me Drown” is a song about letting someone die.
“The Day I Tried To Live” is frequently cited as Soundgarden’s finest achievement, its odd time signature somehow sounds straight, thanks to Matt Cameron’s brilliant time keeping.
youtube
“4th of July” is a song about a post apocalyptic urban landscape, where the speaker isn’t sure whether he is seeing fireworks or bombs.
“Limo Wreck” is a cool death song and has an eerie 9-11 prediction. “Building the towers belongs to the sky/when the whole thing comes crashing down don’t ask me why.”
ANY of the above songs would have been better than that fucking asinine dirge-like major key fuckaround that has somehow not just become Soundgarden's signature song...but their ONLY song.
Does nobody remember Johnny Cash covering “Rusty Cage?”
youtube
“Outshined?”
“Burden In My Hand?”
“Blow Up The Outside World?”
Did none of these other songs get stuck in the electric head? (The electric head is Rob Zombie’s term for the technologically advanced culture we have found ourselves enmeshed in, or imprisoned by. It was the subtitle for White Zombie’s 1995 hit album Astro-Creep 2000: Songs of Love, Destruction, and other Synthetic Delusions of the Electric Head.)
Tumblr media
For my money (which ain’t much honey), the song that best fits both Cornell’s artistic integrity and the sad circumstances of his suicide is “Tighter and Tighter.” I once wrote a whole article on the way artists use “yeah” as a placeholder or as a way to convey emotion when words themselves aren’t adequate. Dig that tired, world-weary exhausted “yeah” at 5:35 of “Tighter & Tighter.”
Or the creepy line going into the first chorus: remember this...remember everything’s just black or burning sun. Not that I agree with such a bleak worldview. It’s a writer’s line. And Randy Bachman has said, “when you’re a writer, you’d step over your own mother.” That’s the Cornell I want to remember. Not that he would step over his own mother. By all accounts he was a committed family man. I mean, I want to remember the Cornell who created strange atmospheric sonic worlds, who explored the dark side that sadly, eventually won out. His otherworldly beautiful music is what I choose to remember about Chris Cornell, not his estate tastelessly exploiting “Black Hole Sun” by using a line from the song to title a posthumous Cornell album of covers No One Sings Like You Anymore. Sigh.
First Cornell’s widow said this was “Chris’s last album.” Okay. What about the Soundgarden songs he recorded vocals for before he died? Kim Thayil was pretty diplomatic about it when asked recently. Cornell did record vocal tracks for the follow up to King Animal.
Kim Thayil: “Given our love for Chris, I do not see us reconfiguring without him.”
But he makes it clear in this interview that Cornell’s widow Vicky has those tracks and won’t release them to the band. Maybe because she blames the band for Chris dying that night? She’s not wrong to believe that they would have known, and seen, what kind of shape Cornell was in, at least at the venue, maybe not later at the hotel.
Kim Thayil: “It’s entirely possible that a new Soundgarden album will be released. Certainly. All it would need is to take the audio files that are available. I tighten up the guitars. Ben does the bass. We get the producers we want to make it sound like a Soundgarden record.”
Interviewer: “Is there an obstacle stopping that?”
Kim Thayil: “There shouldn’t be. There really isn’t. Other than the fact that we don’t have those files.”
Interviewer: “They’re not under your auspices?”
Kim Thayil: “Right. It would be ridiculous if [the record wasn’t made]. But these are difficult things. Partnerships and...property.”
You’re just gonna keep those wav files? And why title his covers album Volume 1 if it’s his “last album?”
Oh right. $$$
No one does sing like Cornell, but is “Black Hole Sun” really the best thing he ever did? The best song he ever sang? Should an album of covers be the last thing he gives to the world?
The only honest answer is no.
Sleep tight Chris. You’re gone.

Sorry to bother you but wikipedia is so unclear :( which provinces/territories have liberal/ndp premieres? And do territories even have premieres? Thank you for everything you do btw. It's so appreciated
Liberal: Yukon, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island (but having an election next week) and Newfoundland/Labrador.
NDP: British Columbia (with Green support)
Northwest Territories and Nunuvut have consensus based legislatures, so no political parties. There is a Premier for each.

In Defense of William Johnson
Government =/= Templars. The Templars wants to replace governments. They use them but isn't fighting their battles(that's all about themselves and not humanity). The government put the land on sale, told them to leave and the Confederacy(CSA or C.A) gave their consent. It's open to be purchased by any wanting colonist and William intended to buy it. The natives would be driven out unless a buyer doesn't throw them out. If it isn't sold(like it ended in game), then they would be forced out by the government. It's not about morals, it's about how they worked back then and William knowing how the system works(unlike the natives) wanted to prevent them from being forced out. He was regardless how you twist it trying to save them. You do know there was an increase in slaver after the AR and not long after the Northwest Indian(government vs natives) happened? Kanen'tó:kon: "Men came, claiming we had to leave. They said that the land was being sold and that the Confederacy had consented. We sent an envoy, but they would not listen." http://assassinscreed.wikia.com/wiki...nson%27s_Trail Kanen'tó:kon: Ratonhnhaké:ton! Ratonhnhaké:ton! Connor: Kanen'tó:kon? Why are you here? Has something happened? Kanen'tó:kon: William Johnson has returned - with all the money required to buy our land. He meets with the elders as we speak. I have begged them to resist. But I fear he shall have his way unless you intervene. Connor: How is this possible? We destroyed the tea. Achilles: The Templars are nothing if not resourceful. You should have heeded my warning. Johnson: "Ah, no. What have you done?" Connor: "Ensured an end to your schemes. You sought to claim these lands for the Templars..." Johnson: "Aye. That we might PROTECT them! Do you think that good King George lies awake at night hoping that no harm comes to his native subjects? Or that the people of the city care one whit about them? Oh, sure, the colonists are happy to trade when they need food or shelter or a bit of extra padding for their armies. But when the walls of the city constrict - when there's crops that need soil - when there's... when there's no enemy to fight - we'll see how kind the people are then." Connor: The colonists have no quarrel with the Iroquois. Johnson: Not yet. But they will. 'Tis the way of the world. In time, they'll turn. I... I could have stopped it. I could have saved you all... Connor: You speak of salvation, but you were killing them. Johnson: Aye. Because they would not listen! And so, it seems, neither will you. Connor: May the Faceless One grant you the peace you claimed to seek. http://assassinscreed.wikia.com/wiki...e_Negotiations Haytham: And what's this? George: Private correspondence! Haytham: Of course it is. Would you like to know what it says, Connor? It seems your good friend here has just ordered an attack on your village. Although attack might be putting it mildly. Tell him, Commander. George: We've been receiving reports of allied natives working with the British. I've asked my men to put a stop to it. Haytham: By burning their villages, and salting the land. By calling for their extermination, according to this letter. Not the first time either. Tell him what you did fourteen years ago. Connor warning Washington and Haytham to not interfere George: That was another time. The Seven Years' War. Haytham: And so now you see what happens to this "great man" when under duress. He makes excuses, displaces blame. Does a great many things, in fact - except take responsibility. Clan Mother: Ratonhnhaké:ton! You have returned! But why? I thought you would be with that other man. Connor: What other man? Clan Mother telling Connor about Charles Lee's involvement Clan Mother: Boiling Water. The one called Charles Lee. He took Kanen'tó:kon and a few others with him. Connor: What? Where have they gone? Clan Mother: To push back those who would take our land. Connor: No. This is wrong... Clan mother: Why are you troubled? Is this not what you wanted? For us to take a stand? Connor: I... I have to go. I need to stop them. Connor: Peace, Kanen'tó:kon! Kanen'tó:kon: Ratonhnhaké:ton. Come to kill me yourself? Connor: What?! Kanen'tó:kon: Charles Lee told me everything. The Patriots seek to destroy us. And you would aid them. Connor: That man is a liar! Kanen'tó:kon: He said you had been corrupted. That you would try to deceive. But here they are on our doorstep. What say you to that? http://assassinscreed.wikia.com/wiki/Broken_Trust Another point proving William is right is when Haytham reveals who burned his village and it was happening again. Washington had no problem massacring them despite being a freedom fighter and Connor being his ally. And with none owning the land during the war Washington could attack it without being stopped by a colonist. That colonist could have been William but he's dead. He could have prevent his tribe from siding with the British and told Washington he's trespassing his land to wage war on innocent natives trying to make a living. So obviously they are now forced to fight back and Connor continues supports the Patriots even after Washington betrayed him and attempted to "burning their villages, and salting the land. By calling for their extermination, according to this letter. Not the first time either." That is evidence enough they didn't fight for all people and equality but Connor's naively can be shocking at times. Even Haytham was surprised by how naive he was when they meet and he came with his accusations. Washington was going to destroy them and Charles knowing this warned them, gave them the opportunity to defend themselves and allow the British to aid them like they did in Johnson's time before he tried to purchase the land. Charles was telling the truth regarding the Patriots and William was right about them turning on the natives, like they always end up doing. Traveler: If you're hungry, I've extra. Connor: No thank you... Where is everyone? Traveler: Gone west. Been a while since they left. Seems some fellow from New York was granted the land by congress. Connor: What? Traveler: Seein' it happen more and more. Government SAYS they don't take land that's already owned, but, uh... Connor: How could this have happened? Traveler: We're on our own now. No more Merry English parts and labor. Which means we gotta go at it ourselves. Gotta pay for it too. Sellin' land is quick and easy and not quite so nasty as taxes. And since some say they're what started the whole war, ain't no rush to bring 'em back. Clever men, these new leaders of ours. They know not to push it just yet. Too soon for taxes. Too... British. http://assassinscreed.wikia.com/wiki...séton_(memory) So the Government(with the consent of the Confederacy) put the land on sale for anyone to buy forcing the natives out since they don't take land they already own(their words btw). So William Johnson knowing this tried to buy it without harming anyone but someone killed his workers, guards before attacking his two ships containing tea he was selling to buy the land(economy 101: he properly has far more than two ships so that damage isn't that huge(except for every life lost)). Now since Templar is nothing if not resourceful he will be able to recover from the losses and setbacks but is forced due to recent events to negotiate. The natives not knowing the system or that they'd get forced out by the Confederacy accuses him of taking the land when he is actually the only one we know of that tries to let them keep their lands. So he could protect if from the king who does't care or the people of the city who considers it bad to be a native. And when a city of people like that expands it will force them out, it's the way of the world. So he gets killed by Connor during his negotiates when William got desperate, threatened them and killed some... ...Now the American Revolution is ended and he can live happy ever after with his tribe but wait a minute. Since William didn't own the land and it was given to a fellow in New York by Congress. Why didn't Connor's "allies" step in and say it is owned the natives? Because they didn't fight for the natives. Some are slave owners or has massacred natives before, they don't care and was using him all the time. Connor being naive believed it was a fight for all, a place where all could be equal and live side by side. He finds out they traveled west, no more Merry English parts or labor for the people living in the frontiers. They are left to survive on their own. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northwest_Indian_War "The Northwest Indian War (1785–1795), also known as Little Turtle's War and by other names, was a war between the United States and a confederation of numerous Native tribes, with minor support from the British, for control of the Northwest Territory. It followed centuries of conflict over this territory, first among Native American tribes, and then with the added shifting alliances among the tribes and the European powers: France, Great Britain, and their colonials. Great Britain ceded to the U.S. "control" of the Northwest Territory, which was occupied by numerous Native American tribes. Despite the treaty, the British kept forts and policies there that supported the Natives in the Northwest Territories. President George Washington directed the United States Army to halt the hostilities between the Natives and settlers and enforce U.S. sovereignty over the territory. With Harmar Campaign (1790) and St. Clair's Defeat (1791) being major defeats. After St. Clair's disaster, Washington ordered Revolutionary War hero General "Mad" Anthony Wayne to organize and train a proper fighting force. Wayne took command of the new Legion of the United States late in 1793. He led his men to a decisive victory at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794. The defeated Native tribes were forced to cede extensive territory, including much of present-day Ohio, in the Treaty of Greenville in 1795. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northwest_Indian_War The natives traveled west and if ended with a war between the natives with change of support including the British who Connor "liberated"(resulted in no more British parts or labor to those living in the frontier) the land from and "saved" his tribe. So William was right, they did turn the natives and Washington(his ally) who also was the one who killed his mother and is responsible for the attack on his village. The guy fully aware of him fighting for his people turns his back on him and fights the natives in the west(with failure) until he puts Anthony Wayne in charge of dealing with them so they can enforce U.S sovereignty over the territory they moved to after being forced out because the Government don't take land they already own, resulting in a fellow from New York owning it. Regarding Stanwix, we all know what land the Colonial Templars will dig up. The Grand Temple. Then there is also the fact that it will also be digged up by the fellow from New York who owns it since William got killed. Had William owned it they would be living on their land. http://assassinscreed.wikia.com/wiki...ian_casualties In his time, Connor ensured the abandonment of his tribe's native lands and the onset of the American Revolutionary War by eliminating William Johnson and John Pitcairn in pursuit of freedom, to his eventual regret.

looked up the difference between provinces & territories (just in general, not country specific but of course the first wikipedia result was abt canada) and discovered every province & territory here is either centre, centre-right, or completely right (alberta is fully right btw. bc its always alberta), except bc (which is centre-left), and the northwest territories & nunavut, both of which are bipartisan and consensus governments. what the Fuck
