Tried to attach the link to this video, but apparently I'm too old to figure that out.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE check out this video if you have Twitter! This man explicitly states the messages from WAKANDA FOREVER. His final statement in the clip: "Perhaps the Native Americans should have passed laws against your ancestors."

Tenoch Huerta and you had been close since you began shooting Narcos: Mexico back in 2018. There was an instant connection that no one explained yet all could see. You two stayed in touch, meet up weekly, and spent a lot of time together. You landed the role of Namor's lover and queen of Talokan for Wakanda Forever. It was exciting to work alongside Tenoch once more. You had a major crush on the man yet kept it to yourself.
Oscar Isaac is another close friend, you both worked together in Star Wars: The Last Jedi where your character was his characters Poe Dameron's ex-lover yet second-best pilot the resistance had. You admit to the small crush developed for Oscar. By the end of the franchise in Rise Of Skywalker your characters have gotten back together in a long kissing scene.
So of course the fans had gone crazy for shipping you with Oscar and Tenoch. Wondering which an is going to be lucky enough to land you as their girlfriend.
Today was the premier of Black Panther Wakanda Forever. You were so excited about being in the Marvel franchise now. Including working with any great people. Right now you had arrives with Oscar Isaac. The press went nuts interviewing you both.
"Would your characters ever meet?" One of them shouted out.
"Love triangle even?!" Another added.
You and Oscar both laughed cheeks flushed.
"Oh, I hope so that would be a good romance." He winked before wrapping an arm around you. Tenoch had been with another tv station not too far away. How his blood boils noticing who you brought. Lupita and Winston both encouraged him to ask you out. Even as his date to the premiere. Yet Tenoch never had the confidence.
He matched his way over there just in time to hear the question and response by Oscar.
"I don't think that Namor would let that happen." Tenoch adds rather seriously. You smiled brightly and pulled Tenoch into a hug. "Hey you!"
"Hey. While admit the love triangle would be cool a king would never let his queen go."
Oscar rolled his eyes, he knew Tenoch liked you," You sure? Marc is pretty slick with the women. Much like myself." He adds just wanting to see Tenoch clench his jaw.
"Oh boys. Come on. Settle down. Let's hurry along and sign some autographs." You thanked the interviewers before leading the two boys, who currently are acting like man children, off to where the fans are waiting.
You watched the movie sitting between the two boys. Many emotions were shown during the screening especially how it felt seeing you and Tenoch as your characters together for the first time.
After the premiere you all headed for the restroom because it was a very long movie.
"You know I am surprised you and (Y/n) aren't together yet." Oscar comments washing his hands beside Tenoch.
"What do you mean? I thought she came with you as her date." He adds a jealous gaze in his brown eyes.
"No just as friends. But if you won't make a move then I will." Oscar turned the water off reaching for a towel.
"Don't waste your time, Oscar."
The men both walked out looking for you.
Winston and you were both laughing and making jokes. He specially was hammering you for the details of why Tenoch and Oscar were as the fans said 'Simping' over you. You explained your history with both men. And how wondering it was to have them so close together now. But in your heart, Tenoch was the one of you.
"So ready to go to the after party?" Oscar asked.
"But as my date." Tenoch glared over to Estrada's direction.
Winston smirked at (Y/n) who had to choose. "Well boys... I am flattered. Really am."
"Then go out with me." Tenoch whispered giving you his brown sugar eyes.
How could you say no?

About Namor x Shuri
Tumblr media
I’m not here to rain on anyone’s parade, ship what you ship and tag appropriately is my fandom motto, if there’s something I don’t want to see then it’s up to me to not engage with that.
I am Namor x Shuri neutral, I don’t love or hate it. I am just here to put this post together to address the Fandom and make sure that some information isn’t lost in the chaos that has become the Namor tags these days.
1. Please do not harass the actors or the production crew. Yes, I am speaking to you, I don’t care how valid you think your ship is, I don’t care if you think it should be canon. Don’t harass the cast/crew or other fans. Don’t do what Reylos and MCU fans have done in the past and just a reminder in case people forgot: Reylos have been extremely racist and harassed the actors and other fans all for the sake of their ship. MCU Fans harassed the fans and the actress Emily VanCamp during the Peggy vs Sharon discourse. I’m not here to argue this and I’m not going to provide receipts, the information and past actions are there if you want to go looking for them. Edit to add: I was speaking in general terms of what I know about these discourses, but I do understand there are Reylo fans who are chill and I was not pointing out anyone specifically. I just wanted to share the observations I knew of in a general way.
2. In a Rollingstone interview Tenoch Huerta has stated that the intentions for the Namor and Shuri relationship was not romantic. Please read the full interview, this role and the movie’s themes mean a lot to the actor beyond shipping.
On another note, some viewers felt that there was romantic chemistry between Namor and Shuri when she was in your city. Did you play that romantic chemistry deliberately? I don’t feel it was a romantic touch [between them]. I think it was more a human, intimate touch. I mean in the history of their kingdoms, the history of their people, they share the same root, and the threat comes from the same place for both of them, for the same reason. They both face threats from Western countries like the United States and France in the story, because of vibranium, natural resources. I think they connect in that aspect.
I mean, when you meet someone and you have a good relationship, whether this person is the gender that you prefer or not, you always have this ambiguous relationship. It’s normal. It’s human. So, I think this happened with both of them. If that can evolve into a romantic relationship or not? I don’t know. It wasn’t our intention. It could happen or not.
The beautiful part of this relationship is, it doesn’t need to be romantic to be deep. It doesn’t need to be romantic to be beautiful and bright and intimate. And this connection between a man and a woman in different levels doesn’t need, necessarily, to end in a romantic relationship. And that’s beautiful, you know? Because I hate the romantic love. I think it’s poison. [Laughs] These characters, they create something… I don’t know. It was magical, but not necessarily romantic.
3. in an interview by Newsweek  with film editor Michael P. Shawver this was written:
On Shuri’s Bond with Namor One thing that has stood out amongst fans since the film was released is Shuri's bond with Namor, and whether there is any potential for romance between the pair. When they first meet, Namor urges Shuri and her mother Queen Ramonda to work with him to retrieve the scientist responsible for making a Vibranium detector, Riri, or face the wrath of Talokan. Later, when Shuri goes to Talokan with Riri, the Talokan leader tells the Wakandan princess of his history, and how his people came to establish the underwater nation after being oppressed by Spanish colonizers. Namor shows Shuri his kingdom and she comes to realize how similar Talokan is to Wakanda and this has inspired some fans to believe a romance could be on the cards for them. Shawver explained that idea was something that was discussed during the film's creation process, and was even something they tested, but ultimately Shuri's bond with Namor felt like it should be something different. "I think what's really interesting is there were takes where there was some connection there," Shawver said. "And at one point in an early cut we discussed like, 'Hey, do we leave it there? Do we just put it out there? Let's just add some complexity to the relationship.' "But, then, you've got to watch out for portraying, for example, Shuri flirting to get what she wants as opposed to being a diplomatic leader and becoming the leader that she needs to be, that she'll get to at the end."So what we ultimately focused on was Namor's line where he says 'only the most damaged people can be truly great leaders', and that's planting the seed of the shared trauma that she realizes at the end [of the film]."But that's essentially who they are, they're trying to lead and be a leader of their nations with all this pain, carrying around this heavy heart." The editor explained that Namor "sort of became [a] big brother" to Shuri "because of the similarity she saw when she saw their world and hearing the story." He added that there is "obviously a shared cultural trauma between his people and her people" and "what she lost at the beginning he started to fill that void, and that felt the most genuine to the characters." Even so, that didn't mean that the editors and Coogler felt the pair were completely unsuited to each other, because Shawver said: "They relate, and I think that anytime we can relate to somebody there can be undertones of that kind of thing, you know what I mean?"Referring to how Namor gave Shuri his mother's bracelet in the film, the editor added: "Honestly, we've got to keep ourselves sane and laugh a lot, especially with the tougher moments or the serious moments, so we would always joke that when he gave her that bracelet they were married now, and she didn't know it."There's a whole different movie where she's like, 'wait, what, I'm the queen of Talokan now?'"
However Production Designer Hannah Beachler has already stated that the interview was taken out of context and that there was no romantic scene between them.  (source, source)
Tumblr media
Nope. JS never shot a romantic scene with them.
I think Shawver was taken way out of context.  While there was a curiosity & seemingly a mutual experience of loss, never any scenes that would be considered typical "romance" or physical intimacy filmed. Shawver is a good dude. Media recreating something where there's nothing.
MCUDirect has already updated with an edit to include Beachler’s response. Again please read the full Newsweek article because there is more there about Honoring Chadwick and other things about the film.
4. Yes, there is a lot of scenes cut and I am just as excited to see those scenes released as anyone but please do not do what Snyder Fans did and harass the crew with #releasethetalokancut that I have seen pop up recently. Hopefully once the DVD comes out we will get all the extra scenes and commentary.
5. The Mary Sue wrote an article about their views on the Namor x Shuri ship parallels and Namor’s background (source) the reason I’m linking this is because it also talks about how Namor is not Mexican even though the actor is, but the Character of Namor is a Mayan/Mesoamerican Native/Indigenous. Please remember this in your fics/headcanons. Namor would not speak Spanish, he would speak his native Yucatec Mayan.
6. White/Light washing, there are many new Namor x Shuri Fan Arts out there and many of them have lightwashed Namor’s skintone to the point of him being white. Please ask artists to consider what white/light washing does to harm Fans of Color and also erases Characters of Color. There is NO EXCUSE for this, and artists should do better. I’m not here to call out artists but to point out that the issue is there and to be wary of it. The actor Tenoch Huerta is very vocal about how racism/discrimination against darker skinned actors in Mexico has affected him and other actors like him.
7. Fandom Racism. It’s there, it’s all over the tags, it’s in the fics. I am not only speaking about Namor x Shuri but about the Namor x Reader fics that have exploded in the tags: Namor is NOT a Noble Savage or a Rapist or a Pedophile. The incident with DeltasStories (discussed here) has sparked outrage in fandom however it was inevitable with the way fandom and specifically white fandom engages with Men/Characters of Color in Fandom. Men/Characters of Color are highly sexualized and you all should educate yourselves on why writing a Character like MCU!Namor who has dark skin tones in this manner is highly racist. Comic!Namor also is painted with this Exotic Lover Rapist brush when it comes to the NamorSue ship, even though he has never done anything like that and Comic!Namor does not mess with kids (source). So the next time you want to spread Fanon!Namor stop and think about how you are perpetuating racist stereotypes.
Shipping is for the Fans. Not the Cast/Crew/Canon.
It won’t be canon, because we all know Namor kills Ramonda. However it doesn’t mean fans can’t ship, just be sure to be respectful of the characters, other fans, and the cast/crew. And for the Antis please shut up about the Age Gap, you aren’t helping your crusade. If you don’t like Namor x Shuri then block/blacklist. I shouldn’t have to say this over and over but the “Immortal Lover” trope is an old trope in romance media, the whole Vampire/Human romance genre is built on this as are other types of fantasy pairings, there’s so many ships centered around white/non poc character that have this trope, this is nothing new so don’t pull out this outcry because all you are doing is infantilizing Shuri and making Namor out to be a predator. Namor is NOT a sexual predator.
This post will be updated with edits as time goes by when new information comes out.

Tenoch Huerta is so pretty I can't breathe
and my rafa too
I can't stop thinking about his girlfriend or his boyfriend trying to convince him to let them put some makeup on him.
"rafa, amor confia en mi te vas a ver aun mas guapo"
he would need a lot of conviction and later a lot of reaffirmation of what a man he is.
but let's say you accomplish your mission and he lets you apply some eye shadow and lip gloss on it (I'm down bad for men with glitter)
then you apply the same skin care and it's just that you relax while listening to music
Rafa, Rafa, Rafa
Okay, so I fully believe that it would be a struggle getting this man to let you even get anywhere near his face, much less let you put makeup on him. I'm sorry but I don't think there would be a moment when he would be willing to let you use makeup on him. At least not without some sort of bribe.
Listen he has an image to maintain and despite him having pretty good confidence in himself, these are the 80s and it's not exactly common to walk out and see a pretty man that didn't just get lucky to have the genes.
I really do think it would take some bribe for him to indulge you, even then don't expect him to go out in public like this. He loves you to death he really does, but please understand he's got a reputation to keep up and people to deal with.
However, I can see him letting you so some skin care and maybe maybe if your lucky a touch of lipstick but only if it's through your lips, what can I say? The man is a romantic.
Now after a while of doing this over time you may actually give him some confidence to wear it if it's a quick errand to run, and let me tell you. The man will absolutely learn his colors and shades, foundation and eyeshadow. So don't worry about him bringing home the wrong color, or confusing products, he likes to pay attention to the things you apply on him. He's got you covered.
I'll tell you right now, at night this man needs so much reassurance. He's scared and ashamed. This isn't what a man should be. This isn't what he should look like. Do you really think he looks pretty? Can you really consider him a man after this.
All of these questions are things that he asks and worries that you will need to ease with the softest voice and gentle hands. At night his insecurities really do get to him, and you have to lay down with him and gently stroke his hair while staring at him, at your man. Your beautiful strong man who looks even more beautiful and strong with makeup. Just as he is. Be patient with him this is all new to him and he really does like the way he looks but baby boy needs time.
Trust me that no one would say a thing, while he may be in the business you have as much power with outside connections as you need for people to keep their mouths shut.
Also, guys, I'm taking a break as you guys saw this was posted way after my date and tbh I'm not doing so well mentally. Hopefully, I'll be back randomly and if anything else be back by May. Sorry dudes, but comments and random talks will be easier than having to post on schedule.

I always got the feeling that the chemistry between Shuri and Namor was deeply human/platonic. Maybe it might be my ace brain talking, but I never got the vibe it was romantic - just genuine human kindness. Just read the Rolling Stones article I’m really happy that Tenoch feels the same way.
I’m not against shipping Shuri and Namor but I’m not exactly with it either. I feel like romance is in everything all the time….it’s always there. Having this genuine and complex non-romantic relationship between a man and a woman being done in BP2 was the best route they could have gone. Like it feels refreshing.
There definitely is chemistry, but chemistry doesn’t have to necessarily mean “romance”. Chemistry’s just a fancy word for being able to vibe with someone for me, honestly. I’m just really glad I’m not the only one who felt this way. I don’t have anyone to really express my understandings/takes with, but it feels like you have some great (similar) interpretations/understandings of MCU Namor as well.
Other than that, thanks for being such an interesting account! I love reading everything you know about comic Namor and your takes on things. You’re one of the most interesting blogs out there :)
Thanks Anon! I'm glad you are enjoying my blog, and this ask does give me stuff to talk about. The Article has a lot of really interesting stuff in there but about the subject of Namor x Shuri:
On another note, some viewers felt that there was romantic chemistry between Namor and Shuri when she was in your city. Did you play that romantic chemistry deliberately? I don’t feel it was a romantic touch [between them]. I think it was more a human, intimate touch. I mean in the history of their kingdoms, the history of their people, they share the same root, and the threat comes from the same place for both of them, for the same reason. They both face threats from Western countries like the United States and France in the story, because of vibranium, natural resources.
Tumblr media
I never saw them as romantic but I can see where the fans who ship it get the romantic elements, its textbook Anti-Hero/Heroine ship material (even though Tenoch literally states that is not the intention), which isn't something that WoC characters get very often, not on this scale, not for a big budget movie. I totally understand why every Namor x Shuri fan is wearing their shipping glasses and going all in. Coming from a comic background understanding of these characters and knowing how they are in the comics I know that Namor thinks Shuri is T'Challa's kid sister and a Child even though she is an adult. Namor isn't interested in her in the comics and Shuri hates and mistrusts Namor in the comics. They do not get along even in a hate-love kind of way.
Tumblr media
But this is about the movie which has different backgrounds and relationships. As I said, I personally don't see them as romantic, because I saw them as two leaders of their people in different stages of their rage/grief in their lives. Namor's had centuries to deal with his issues but he hasn't (very typical of him, just like comic!namor, lol) and Shuri's loss/grief is so very raw and new, she is also not dealing with her issues in a healthy way. Both characters have open emotional wounds and they are looking for a connection. People can be connected with emotions that aren't romantic! Hate and Rage can fuel us! So can Hope, and a hundred other things. So it's totally fine to not view it romantically if that's not vibing with you. Platonic Relationships (whether they be bad or good) are always overlooked in media when it comes to putting it up against a romantic angle.
That being said, the way fans are reacting to this is very annoying and why I'm trying very hard to keep out of the whole Pro vs Anti Namor x Shuri ship war.
My personal thoughts on that issue.
My thoughts for the Anti side: It's not wrong to ship them, and everyone crying it's Toxic needs to chill out because people have shipped way more toxic stuff. I personally don't care if people ship whatever so long as it's all tagged properly for people to blacklist/avoid if they don't want that. Everyone has their nopes and squicks but it's up to them to be responsible online and if they don't want that in their space then take action to cull their dash and better their experience. The actors have different ages but the actors are not dating each other. The fictional characters have different ages but really if people understand the romance genre the "Immortal Lover" trope is a huge mainstay and it's all fiction. Namor isn't grooming/abusing Shuri in the movie. There is really bad Fanon (and not true at all) that surrounds Namor's character saying Namor is a sexual predator/rapist and people using that to cry this is toxic need to stop. Seriously just stop. Think about the implications of saying that about a MoC character. Stop harassing Namor x Shuri shippers.
My thoughts for the Pro side: Not everyone is going to see it as a Romantic ship, and that's fine. Not everyone is going to care about them as a romance, and that's fine. Saying people who refuse to ship them are being racist/haters/whatever is so unhinged because not everyone is going to be able to get over the fact that Namor killed Shuri's mother. Everyone has different reasons for not shipping them romantically and being annoying about it by turning every single element of the movie into Proof the Ship is real doesn't sit right with people. People are allowed to have their own personal views and criticisms of the ship and not want to engage with that at all if they don't want to. Ship and do what you want but be considerate to people who don't want to engage with that and understand that canon doesn't equal "my ship is valid". Saying people who can't/don't want to ignore what happened in the movie "are weak" is pretty childish because if you want non shippers to accept your right to ship then you should also accept their right to not give a damn about that ship.
I think Tenoch played it safe with answering whether or not that ship would ever happen and he knows his character and he knows what that script intended so if people want to take it a different way that's up to them but it doesn't make them more valid than people who decide they don't want to see it as romantic. Also fans saying Namor x Shuri should be Canon is very weird because there's been this whole movement in past years where fans want their ship to be canon even though the whole point of shipping was just "I would like to explore what if? with these characters". And the MCU Fandom has a bad habit of putting ships above everything else and then harassing the actors about it. I hope it won't happen with Tenoch and Letitia.
There is a lot more to the movie and the characters than romance and many people like myself want to explore that side of the story, the side that talks about loss, and grief, and the way past and current generational trauma and colonialism has affected everything.

➥ FULL NAME: Itzli Ortiz ➥ AGE: 42 ➥ FACECLAIM: Tenoch Hureta ➥ ROLE: Client ➥ OCCUPATION: Rancher ➥ RESIDENCE: The Villas
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Itzli was born in Mexico as the second son of a poor family. His parents were always trying to give him and his brother the best that they could, though their limited resources often meant that they could only provide the bare necessities. Still, Itzli's life was filled with joy and love. He never could have imagined a life without his family, though that all changed on his 14th birthday. To give his brother and him the best chance at a good life, the two of them were sent across the border and into America.
Upon their arrival to the USA, Itzli's older brother quickly got a job as a rancher on a large ranch. Itzli was meant to go to school so that he could have a brighter future, though that plan quickly fell through. Due to their lack of funds and their newfound independence, Itzli's brother fell into debt to the wrong people. Unable to pay back what he owed, Itzli was suddenly left entirely alone at the tender age of 15. Luckily for him, the ranch his brother worked for had no problems hiring him. Over the next 10 years he worked for the family that owned the Ranch and grew close with the Matriarch of the family. She could see he was lonely and needed family so she would often ask him over to help fix things as an excuse to spend time together. Despite her large family, Itzli found out that she too lacked a close connection as most of them only desired to use her money for their desires without ever helping her or even providing her company. It was due to this connection that Itzli eventually moved onto the land of the ranch and became the head Rancher of the whole place. Their relationship continued to deepen as Itzli considered this woman to be his new Grandmother. With the money he made he was able to send funds home to his parents and live a happy life. He truly wished for nothing more as he thought he had reached his dream life. Unfortunately that fell apart when the old woman died. She was well into her 90s so it was no surprise, however Itzli was heartbroken. He was afraid he might be kicked from his job or that whoever inherited her ranch might sell it off to some corporation. As it turned out, he had nothing to fear. At the reading of the will, Itzli was named her primary heir. He was given the land and a large majority of her money, millions of dollars he had no idea what to do with. Of course the family wasn't happy about it and they tried to take what they could from him, but after a few years of legal battles, Itzli came out the other side a massively wealthy man with his very own ranch. It was here that Itzli decided he needed to see something new. He found out about Manaia and booked a trip, wanting to take some time to find himself now that he no longer had to work.

* ✶    EREN VOGEL  (  LOGAN LERMAN  )  has  filed  a  search  warrant  for  their  FAMILIAL  CONNECTIONS  & it IS  NOT  required  to  contact  them  @suchtragedy.  apparently  it's  their  YOUNGER SISTER (23-28) & OLDER BROTHER (32-34)  &  they  look  identical  to  ODEYA RUSH, FOR HIS SISTER & AARON TAYLOR-JOHNSON, FOR HIS BROTHER OR UTP THAT CAN PASS OFF AS RELATED. here's  some  information  about  them  you  need  to  know:  eren and his siblings always grew up as a pretty tight-knit family and have always been pretty close, despite their busy schedules. they all come from a very rich family of old money and have been socialites their entire lives. most notably, their eldest sister scored a reality tv show about their family a couple of years ago, which has only increase their fame. recently, eren found out he was only related to his siblings by his mom's side and was the product of an affair. he's been having an identity crisis over it and afraid to reveal it to anybody out of fear of being disowned by their father. now, he needs his siblings more than anything to fall back on this big discovery.
* ✶    EREN VOGEL  (  LOGAN LERMAN  )  has  filed  a  search  warrant  for  their  FAMILIAL CONNECTION  & it  IS  NOT  required  to  contact  them  @suchtragedy.  apparently  it's  their OLDER SISTER (ELDEST OF ALL OF THEIR SIBLINGS)  &  they  look  identical  to  DAKOTA JOHNSON, ALEXANDRA DADDARIO OR UTP AS LONG AS SHE CAN PASS OFF AS RELATED (37+).  here's  some information about them that you need to know:  their eldest sister is only half-related to them through their father's side and was a child from his first failed marriage. despite only being half-related, they all saw one another as full-blooded siblings and never had issues with one another. as of right now, she has been the most successful out of all of them and the most well-known figure in their family, going as far as to become a nationally recognized model and public figure. a few years ago, she went on to score a deal to have a reality tv show about their family and what went on between them. eren has strayed as far from her show as possible, but still maintains a good relationship with her. he's always sympathized with her in the sense of feeling like the black sheep of the family and typically went to her with all of his problems.

Thoughts : Güeros (2014)
Tumblr media
It’s so easy to get locked into the system that is Hollywood output these days.  People are quick to give praise and credit to filmmakers from other parts of the world that made movies in the 1980s and prior, but it seems as if modern day filmmakers from other parts of the world struggle for recognition in the states outside of the blockbuster sphere.  That’s what makes discovering a movie like Güeros so rewarding, as it seems like an uncommon breath of fresh air.
Tomás (Sebastián Aguirre) is a young man that often finds himself on the wrong end of trouble, which causes problems for his mother.  At her wits end, she sends him to live with his brother Sombra (Tenoch Huerta) in Mexico City, near the National Univeristy.  Sombra and his roommate Santos (Leonardo Ortizgris) spend their days and nights in a powerless apartment, occasionally stealing power from their downstairs neighbors (against the neighbors’ will).  Disenchanted with how Sombra lives, Tomás leaves the house, only to be followed shortly by Sombra and Santos, now basically evicted due to being caught red-handed attempting to steal electricity.  Tomás, obsessed with folk singer Epigmenio Cruz (Alfonso Charpener), finds out the singer is in poor health and was admitted to a hospital in the area.  Tomás becomes wholly focused on meeting Epigmenio, sending the group into a series of adventures across Mexico City, and even gaining another companion along the way in Ana (Ilse Salas) as they weave in and out of pockets of the 1999 UNAM strike.
This film was heaped with praise upon its release, and it’s evident why almost immediately.  The story has accessible points in it that immediately foster several connections : frustrations of raising a child, living in abject poverty, keeping school system reformation focused and important, and cultural identity are all key parts of the film’s mixture.  Adding in the cult hero chase in regards to Epigmenio and his mystic affect on listeners is a nice touch, especially the repeated refrain of how he made Bob Dylan cry once.
In terms of style, there are unique and brilliant decisions all over the place, many of which pay homage to older cinema that more than likely influenced this film.  The black and white choice, as well as the non-traditional framing, immediately present echos of old French and Italian cinema, as does the constant shift between static composed shots and vibrant handheld shots.  Much of the film takes place in less than glamorous settings or out on the street, again reminiscent of the French new wave.  The fact that we never hear the music of Epigmenio, despite the fact that the groups carries a cassette and walkmen with them, only further propagates the air of mystery around the character.  Even the sound design and musical cues demand your attention without being intrusive, superfluous or overly-showy.
Where the film really carves its spot is when it gets truly non-traditional, and even a bit meta at times.  I am not sure if all four characters are meant to pay homage to some of the inspirational giants of offbeat cinema, but the inclusion of Ana with her striped shirt, and the reveal of Sombra being named Federico are two major clues in regards to Alonso Ruizpalacios’s influences for this film.  The moments where the movie turns back in on itself are very surreal, be they numerous line reads edited into the film, direct commentary on where character are at or headed in the narrative, or even passive-aggressive observations on the state of cinema in Mexico via representations of that same passive-aggression.  Even the way that the 1999 UNAM strike inserts itself into the overarching narrative has echoes of a similar French student strike that preceded an artistic shift.
Sebastián Aguirre certainly works as the both the bookend focus and the audience tour guide for this film... his unassuming demeanor and ever present nature give us a tangible connection to the film.  By contrast, Tenoch Huerta becomes the one that demands our attention from essentially the moment he makes it to the screen, with his personality only matched by the power of his onscreen panic attacks.  Leonardo Ortizgris goes for my approach to acting, which is subtle realism... think Cole Hauser in Good Will Hunting... so good and natural that you almost forget he’s there until he chooses to make his presence known.  Ilse Salas lives up to the power of her film moniker namesake by giving a performance so magnetic that it’d make Ana Karina jealous.  Alfonso Charpener wins the ‘a lot with a little’ award in his small amount of screen time, infusing a ton of humor into the story resolution while barely moving.
Need a love story?  How about a road movie?  Maybe a debut film with a fresh sense of energy and style to it?  This may be the film for you.
