you are cordially invited to a good ol' fashioned Valentine's Day Hoedown! an event for couples and singles to get together and just have fun and perhaps forget our struggles for a little while. there will be square dancing, line dancing, and swing dancing, as well as some more modern music picks for the young ones.

food and drink will be available, as well as a cake walk, a pie eating contest and jam contest. we will have a haystack for photos, and a caricature artist.

in the spirit of the holiday, we have pre-paired individuals together for the night with matching numbered wristbands. perhaps sparks will fly?

we plan to be out of the dance hall by 5pm, plenty of time to get home before dusk.

Preview: 2022 IFFBoston Fall Focus

My favorite film festival in Boston, in Massachusetts and possibly the world is Independent Film Festival Boston (read my coverage here).  I have a special place for this festival: in 2014 my documentary Life on the V: The Story of V66 had its World Premiere at the festival, and in 2015 I was on the Documentary Jury. This past Spring, the IFFBoston returned as an in-person festival and it was my first time attending in-person since 2019 (they had some virtual fests in between). IFFBoston’s mini-festival Fall Focus, where they showcase some of the Fall festival darlings will be taking place at the Brattle Theatre (Cambridge, MA) from Oct. 27 to Nov. 1. 

Here is my preview. There loads of movies I’m looking forward to, but these are the films high on my radar:

Thurs. 10/27/22:

Opening Night Film is Sarah Polley’s drama Women Talking, starring Rooney Mara, Frances McDormand and Claire Foy. Talk about an amazing cast! I’ve been a big fan of Polley’s directing and this has been getting raves at recent festivals.

Fri. 10/28/22:

From France: One Fine Morning directed by Mia Hansen-Love (director of Things to Come). It stars the always excellent Lea Seydoux!

Sat. 10/29/22:

First up this long fest day is James Gray’s Armageddon Time, the 1980-set period family drama. Another amazing cast: Anthony Hopkins, Anne Hathaway and John Diehl (who played Digger in Monument Ave). 

Then it’s Corsage starring Phantom Thread star Vicky Krieps. She was so good in Phantom Thread and that movie poster of her flipping the bird is genius marketing!

The Centerpiece Film is Korea’s Broker starring Parasite’s Song Kang Ho. It is directed by Hirokazu Kore-Eda, who has done some really solid films, i.e. Shoplifters and The Truth.

In Causeway, Jennifer Lawrence stars as an Afghanistan war vet returning home to New Orleans and coping with the assistance of Brian Tyree Henry.

Sun. 10/30/22:

Sam Mendes (whose made more than a few 4 and 5 star films) returns with a love letter to cinemas in Empire of Light starring Olivia Colman.

The Closing Night Film is The Inspection Elegance Bratton’s autobiographical story of joining the marines after being homeless during the “don’t ask don’t tell” era. 

Mon. 10/31/22:

Rian Johnson’s Knives Out was one of the best movies of 2019. Among the standouts of the star-studded cast was Daniel Craig, cast so far against type that it worked. Now Craig’s detective Benoit Blanc is back in the sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

Tues. 11/1/22:

One of the best movies I saw at the 2018 IFFBoston was Sebastian Lelio’s Disobedience. Lelio has made a career of films about, well, as Sleater-Kinney says, “complex female characters”. His newest film The Wonder is a period piece about a medical professional played by Florence Pugh to assist with a young girl who has not eaten for months. Did I mentioned this is co-written by Emma Donahue the writer of Room, my #3 Movie of the 2010s.

Remember, we are NOT mandating threads to be completed during this trip, however, we do expect everyone to reach out to their roommates, people you don’t normally talk to, etc, and simply branch out. Walnut Notes: Trusting God with Endora Pan

Endora Pan is a worship leader and small group leader at our church, FCBC Walnut. We talked bout her exhortation from our online worship service, recording her vocals for video worship, and small groups during the time of COVID-19. This episode was recorded LIVE on IGTV and you can watch the video on YouTube.

Endora and I have been about the music ministry since the first day we met, so it was good to see her on screen during our online worship service. We talked about how she was still raising her hands in a recorded video, and I was honestly very encouraged. I have been trying to grow in my physical expressiveness during musical worship, and maybe COVID-19 is what it's going to take to make me go all-in when we get back to church.

Walnut Notes: Remembering God in All Things with Jon Ng

Jon Ng is a Sunday School teacher at FCBC Walnut. Due to COVID-19, we moved our Sunday School class online. We shared a devotion with our students and I saved it to share with the rest of our church. We recorded LIVE on Zoom and you can watch the video on YouTube. Here's his main point: Keeping God at the forefront of all actions and thoughts is wise, but when we forget about God, everything is worthless.

I think recording these videos works well for my Sunday School class, and I am happy to share them with the rest of the church. I teach the 11th and 12th grade class, but we also invited the 9th and 10th grades to join us when we have the live class session. Over on Facebook, I've been playing with adding captions - and the 10-15 minute video length is perfect for me to get the job done.

Dive In Dig Deep: IGTV Guide

I have been recording unboxing videos of the books I receive to review over on Instagram. I wanted an easy way to keep track of them, so I created an IGTV Guide. I group my episodes into different seasons, and they are rather arbitrary, but in my mind they are based off of the waves of books that I get in a certain time period.

What I hope to do is introduce more video content. Of course I still plan to be book-based. But experimenting with live interviews and sharing some music on my stories has seemed to work well. In my feeds, it seems like the LIVE trend is starting to wind down. But I still see more and more people - and Christian ministries for that matter - trying to make an impact. Book Reviews

This week I reviewed two sets of books from The Good Book Company. These books read like a commentary but feel like a devotional. Check out my reviews of Luke 1-12 For You by Mike McKinley, Luke 12-24 For You by Mike McKinley, John 1-12 For You by Josh Moody, and John 13-21 For You by Josh Moody.

Reading has been difficult for me during quarantine, so this week I made it my goal to read and review one book per day. They were shorter books, so I made sure to pick them up instead of surfing on my phone. Writing reviews came easily sine the books were still fresh in my mind. I should be able to take it easier next week, and I'm looking forward to having a clearer calendar.

Playlists

I kept playing the HSMTMTS soundtrack, and it's been growing on me. There's a lot of filler tracks from the movie, and I think only a few of the tracks can stand on their own outside of the context of the movie - but that's okay. Unlike the original HSM, I don't quite care to revisit the actual film. In this case, the songs will suffice.

Speaking of Disney, we watched all episodes of The Imagineering Story on Disney+ and I highly recommend it for any fan of Disneyland. As a child of the 90s, the series started picking up for me at Episode 3 where former CEO Michael Eisner came into the picture. Before we had kids, Jess and I were blessed to go to every Disney Park in the world, so it was nice to revisit them and see the story behind them.

The article that impacted me the most this week was Churches, You Don’t Have to Compete with Disney+ by Vermon Pierre for The Gospel Coalition. As the social media officer for FCBC Walnut, I can give my input, but the pastors are the ones controlling the big pieces of content. Overall, I think we're doing a good job. We need to be wise, adjust for our church context, and be flexible to change. This Twitter thread from DesiringGod's Tony Reinke offers some great advice regarding content strategies for pastors during the COVID-19 crisis. I don't agree with everything, but it's definitely a good place to start.

I'll be recording my friend Joyce Ho's Sunday School devotion this weekend, and I'm scheduled to give the next one. I'm a bit nervous about being recorded, but if my Sunday School teachers are open to doing it then I should be willing to join them. I've actually been thinking about how I can better pivot to video across different platforms, and after next Sunday I'll be carefully considering my options.

I have book reviews lined up and ready to go for next week. I've been shying away from hosting my own book giveaways, but I'm working with IVP right now to try a partnership for something fun soon.

MECHANICS!

here are the groups for save the citizen. after plotting with your group, you can go about this event any way you want; you can plan the fight and write solos where the same things happen from different points of view, or you can write a thread/threads the ol’ fashioned way. though everyone’s name is listed here, you are not required to write for this event, but at the very least, plot with your groupmates! in the event that someone in your group is inactive or unresponsive to plotting, you are free to proceed without them and headcanon their actions after 48 hours of waiting for a response.

HOW IT WORKS! the match’s heroes and villains are announced through the speaker, their faces appearing on the screen. the players, wearing sleek black long-sleeved uniform jumpsuits that are designed to act like armor, are escorted into the arena, then the doors are closed. minute one: the game starts. the referee, a professor or staff member sitting on an elevated platform on one side of the field, blows the whistle and the mannequin chants “save me! save me!” heroes and villains are free to start going about the match any way they want. they can use their powers however they want. (of course, the referee will issue warnings or stop the match if things escalate too much.) minute two: the mannequin drops two feet closer to the incinerator and chants “save me! save me!” minute three: the mannequin drops two feet closer to the incinerator and chants “save me! save me!”  the game ends when the heroes save the citizen at any point in the game, or when the citizen is incinerated after minute three. it is also possible for the game to end if the judge stops it on account of someone being seriously injured. a whistle is blown to signal the end of the game. the referee announces whether heroes or villains won. the players are escorted out, then the field is prepared for the next match.

WHO WINS? either the group or the main blog can determine the winner of the match. if you want to decide among yourselves, reply to this post with your group and your selected winner (ex. GROUP B, HEROES WIN). if you want the main blog to decide for you, reply to this post with your group and ‘undecided’ (ex. GROUP A, UNDECIDED). if you choose to do this, the main will contact a member of your group and tell them who wins so you can plot accordingly. ONLY ONE MEMBER PER GROUP SHOULD COMMENT!

EPISODE THREE: FINAL EVALUATIONS 8.18 to 9.08

Welcome to the third and final episode of Produce Project Season One! Under the cut you’ll find all the important information you’ll need to succeed. After the last episode and some of the issues that rose, we want to again stress that if you have a negative experience at all please come to us and that, additionally, we will be debuting everyone in some form of project group after this episode, so please don’t feel as anxious or pressured to rank high. 

REVISED POINTS.

+ 2pp for 400+ headcanon relating to the show. (redeemable once) + 3pp for any 4/4 350+ thread. + 5pp for any 8/8 350+ thread.  + 5pp for any 4/4 350+ thread completed with a muse you've not threaded with before. + 10pp for any 8/8 350+ thread completed with a muse you've not threaded with before. + 10pp for completing a 4/4 350+ thread with each member of your team (all or nothing).  + 10pp for a 3/3 350+ group thread for your entire team. (redeemable once) + 5 pp / 5 sp for first solo prompt.  + 3 pp / 3 sp for additional solo completion of prompts. 

You can redeem points with someone only within the context of one thread. You can redeem points even if your partner for a thread is not able to do so.  Muses that do not complete the minimum 1 prompt will be considered eliminated. 

PROMPTS. 

(INTROSPECTIVE) This introspective should delve into your muse’s feelings on the final episodes, their placement in the group they’ve been assigned, and on any netizen information from the last episode you’d like to incorporate. A suggestion would be to frame it in the context of an “exit interview” for the show.  (GROUP STAGE) This time, the group stage prompt should directly reflect their stage performance. If possible, it would be great to explore this after discussion with the other members of your team! Obviously, they shouldn’t do a flawless job, we should get an idea of where their weaknesses still are, how they work with the group, how they interpret the song, and so on.  (PERSONAL APPEAL) This is your chance to give us something fun to use for the final netizen buzz. We can’t guarantee it’ll all make it in, but we can guarantee we’ll give it a look if we see it linked on your points page. Detail a moment they shined, and how! It can go beyond the purely talent based things; consider Kim Sohye who’s hard work propelled her up the ranks, or trainees with moments that caught attention for things like aegyo, personality, personal stories, and so on. Show us something only your muse has to offer.  (HIDDEN CAMERA PRANK)  With the show wrapping up, all remaining participants were asked to speak to themselves in a mirror, reflecting on their time on the show, their hardships, their feelings about the show ending soon, then end with some encouraging words to themselves for the final round. But little did the participants know, there was someone dressed as a ghost behind the mirror to prank them halfway through their speech by scaring them all for the hilarious reactions!

EVALUATION.

This is a special prompt turned in to the admins as your muse’s fictional "pitch" to the judges. We encourage creativity with this. It can canvass their time in the show as whole, from initial interviews to stages to any controversies they may have experienced. It should be detailed, nuanced, and display the growth of your muse throughout the show, setting them up for their future projection. Consider the image they've hoped to create and the one they now have, to an extent. Consider where you want them to go next. Delve into limitations, faults, and flaws while also outlining strengths. Would they do this again? Do they want to debut in this group at all anymore? What have they learned about the industry through this experience - if anything? How have they come to change their understandings of themselves as an idol and as a person? Has their perception of their own talents changed? Are they willing to sacrifice anything to debut - dignity, dream concepts, personal time, privacy, health? Are they in over their head? Are they still full of dangerous hubris, poised for a downfall? Give us a clear idea of their growth and of what you hope for them in terms of direction. Tell us your grand plan! Anything important to their identity, to their goals, to their future, we want to know it.

500+ words, 5 pp, 5sp. All information will be heavily considered in admin plans for upcoming groups and debuts. Consider this a lot like the image section 2.0, revised with character growth in mind.

« ° THREAD ROULETTE RESULTS !!
