Top posts of the year
Hello fellow followers! As the end of the year is slowly approaching, I want to give a thanks to all your support! We may not all share the same interests, but we all share a similar interest of wishing to connect more with our feminine sides. I want to share my last Throwback Thursday by looking back at something more special outside of my own past: my most popular captions by my followers! It will also be my pinned post until New Year’s Day arrives! Here are the top 5 most liked and shared captions (created by me) from this blog:
Tumblr media
5th most popular is this one of Sunny Leone in sexy lingerie. This one was created out of impulse and I was caught by surprise that it caught on more than I would have thought. Then again, someone hot like her would provoke you into cracking your egg if she actually said that.
Tumblr media
4th place is this art of someone dressing as a woman. This was my very first caption and decided to use this well known drawing used in captions for several years. From what I was able to find later, it was a commission drawn by a known TG transformation artist. However, this person in the drawing is transgender and she (not “he”) is happy to see herself looking back. The euphoria in her face may explain why she hasn’t worn the wig yet. Crossdressing may help some trans individuals with dysphoria and can even serve as a catalyst in transitioning if they feel the need to feminize (or masculinize if trans male) beyond dressing. I may look into recreating this caption in the future as I related more to this pic after discovering the origin.
Tumblr media
3rd place is this caption of some girl in cleavage. I’m just going to leave it at that. I wrote as a way to show how “boymoding” can only work until your feminizing results make it difficult to hide. Boymoding, from what I was able to understand, is when transitioning girls under HRT dress as male, but everyone around them notices they’re turning into a girl. In other words, the people around them see them as a crossdresser instead of a guy now. Yet, boymoders deny their feminizing changes. Once it becomes too obvious, like bigger breasts or softer skin, their only option left is to come out as a trans girl.
Tumblr media
2nd is this very hot GIF, and it’s easy to see why it’s so hypnotic. The crop top and leggings hugging her own curves, the way she moves, her long, flowing hair, and her overall looks are persuasive enough to either chase her, become her, or both! The clip was originally from a Vine (remember those?) that was difficult to edit, recrop, and make into what you’re seeing right now. I don’t make GIFs anymore, but maybe I’ll make another one like this one day.
Tumblr media
And in 1st place is this one of a woman holding a set of pills. Although they’re actually birth control pills, this pic was used in long-gone caption affirming the user to take hormones. Many trans people are placed in a waiting list to be prescribed gender-affirming hormones, and that’s after an extensive time being in therapy sessions. These waitlists take months, or even years, before being cleared out. Oh, and these trans people are all adults! So it’s no surprise as to see why many would love to get their hands on HRT if handed to them instantly. If you’re in that process, please reach resources such as Planned Parenthood, Plume, or other sources available in your country or region that will help you guide your transition into a girl.
-Conclusion
These top posts say something more than wishing to connect with our feminine sides. Based on this list, it seems many wish to also become a girl for other reasons. I can’t judge what you like as I am responsible for creating these captions. But as someone who is learning more about their trans identity, my captions are slowly drifting away from fantasy and diving more into reality. I will slip in something provocative as a way to tease you. But it most likely won’t fall under the “forced fem” topic, but rather as a way to “crack” your egg. There will be more surprises showing up come next year, or up until this blog lasts. Until then, happy night people!

Throwback Thursday, Fandom Edition: Putting Those Duelists In Situations
Tumblr media
My friend @syncreticimage drew this fanart in August 2008, to illustrate my Revolutionary Girl Utena fic, Small Favors, which I'd posted on Fanfiction.net the month before, and on Livejournal several months before that. I was thrilled to see them bring the scene to life, and am still so grateful to have shared this fandom experience with them.
I've since added the fic to AO3 with its original summary: "In which Touga tries to seduce a new minion, Ruka considers his options, and at least one understanding is reached."
I did not include the author's note that preceded the story on FF.net: "Consider yourself warned for homoerotic innuendo." Fan creators sure did tend to consider same-gender content its own warning back then, even in relation to a show like Utena. I'm glad that we've mostly left that trend behind.
Also, yes, the caption on Syncretic's art is in LOLcat-speak, because that was also who we were as people.

Ok first I’m sorry if you get my ask 2 times because honestly I don’t know if the 1 one send sooo …yeah here I go I just want to know if the bonus comic about backlash that you post on your patreon will be post eventually for everyone (public) I’m curious again if you have my ask 2 time just anwser one of them!!! Thank you
All bonus comics are considered Patreon-Exclusives, and are posted only to my Patreon as an extra goodie to thank and reward all my readers who are able to support BACKLASH with $1 a month (or more) pledges on Patreon.
Bonus materials for BACKLASH specifically - like extra comics, process breakdowns and Throwback Thursdays (and many other Patreon-Exclusive posts) - may go public in the future, but not until one or more of the following criteria are met:
1) I make a physical printed edition of BACKLASH and the material is included in the back as bonus pages.
2) BACKLASH ends.
3) I make enough income through Patreon that I can make BACKLASH full-time.
This is not intended to be a punishment for fans who can't pledge to my Patreon. I know that not everyone can financially support my work, and I appreciate all the ways that my readers find to support me whether its by sharing BACKLASH with friends, reading the updates and leaving comments, drawing fanart and writing fanfiction, and all the other incredible and creative ways you all show me you care about my story every day! I don't want anyone to feel obligated to give me money, especially if they cannot afford it. Times are tough for everyone, please do what's best for you.
However, you get a lot of content on my Patreon for very little money. Just $1 every month (even less if you pledge annually - ~$10 for a whole year!) gets you every comic page early, as well as all bonus material I manage to create between pages and my day-job.
If less than one-tenth of my followers here on Tumblr pledged $1 a month to the creation of my comic, I'd be able to surpass all my milestones and making BACKLASH would be my full-time job! I'd have more time and energy to devote to making the comic, as well as extra goodies like illustrations, merch, prints and more.
I make this comic for free, it is free to read and will always be free to read. I use my very precious free time to continue making it without any promise of profits. And I am happy to do that - I love BACKLASH, I love my work and I love telling this story.
But like. I do have to make money somehow. We do live under the thumb of late-stage capitalism and I do have to make my rent and eat every month. Until our socialist agenda is fulfilled and we get UBI in the USA, I will continue to make fun extra goodies to say thank you to those who are able to give me their precious paychecks because they believe in my art.
Thank you for understanding. I will be sure to denote and tag Patreon Exclusive posts more clearly from here on out so as to avoid any future confusion.
Thank you for your continued support, and I'll see you in the next update! 💖☄️

While the theories/analyses in the works are still in the drafts, I just wanted to share some thoughts about what might & will happen today for Stranger Things Day (the 2023 edition). Lovely promotional art btw!
Tumblr media
Now I'm not super-duper excited about all of it but, (in fact much of ST related content hasn't excited me for a while now) but that isn't the point, I appreciate a throwback, not thursday but monday in that case.
I think it's a good move on their part, especially for stories that are culturally significant, to return & go back through the whole journey that happened before the finish line; mainly becauses it engages the audience in revisiting in a way that's helpful for people who don't have the time to rewatch all of it & also really being part of the moment that's happening. In the sense that they are being stimulated via their own experiences & memories of it, & that is always good. Especially if most of it is positive.
And I enjoy the way they've done the marketing about pre-Season 5 so far, it's present but not overwhelming & has certain subtleties to it like in for the new ice cream flavours for example. It's all a bit creepy yet familiar, I enjoy it.
Nooooow... I also did not finish some of my theories, that I could have dropped because they were very much shorter than usual & I don't think they were about things that would have been easily disproved faster than I would've liked to be but you never know. If it's to drop something that's going to be proven false in 2 days, there's no point in dropping it anyway.
Do I think we're going to get a lot from this ST Day ? No. Apart from possibly them giving us the episode titles of the final season which I doubt because it seems a bit early for me & new infos on the play which... we already have covered enough for me, I think 🤔 & believe it or not, the new things I hears about it are quite intriguing & reassuring, so that's nice! but apart from that, I don't think we're going to get much.
With the strikes that happened & that are ongoing, the writing that to my knowledge has yet to be completed & filming that hasn't even started, I don't really see what we could get.
Now I could be completely wrong, there might be something huge in stores or multiple things that are going to be revealed.
My wish would be to have a new video game, specifically a horror one that's slightly abstract & psychological. First person too! But a follow-up to the ST arcade games, 1984 & 3 covering Season 4 would be nice to. And we're not at a point where we can get an open-world ST game so I'm not asking.
Perhaps some new comics or books, they're always nice to me, canon or not. Maybe some merch, though I'm not a big ST merch lover, not that it's bad, I'm just not really interested in most of it.
Now given the revisiting aspect plus other elements of this day speaks to me plus works with some of the theories I've been working on, oh yes! Here's what I'm most excited to get into soon is:
- a return to Season 2, (Season 1's chaotic little sister but who follows in her footsteps & admires her very much) they've been pushing the fandom to revisit this season for Season 5 and I'm very eager to see what they are going to push forward about it given the fact they called it underrated which THEY ARE RIGHT! The fandom does not appreciate this season enough plus has a delusional hate towards "The Lost Sister" which is a fine episode. And it has Will as a main protagonist with a heavy focus on the Byers, with an interesting take on a Lovecraftian menace, so how can you not appreciate it ? So yeah, that's that.
Next, to my own surprise: - "The First Shadow", yes I did not expect myself to be as interested right now as I am about this given what it covers but the more the crew talks about it & the more new elements about it come out, the more I think there's truly something worth our time & engagement here. First, good news, it's definitely not mandatory to watch it for Season 5 which is good, secondly, it's going to be a retelling and a new exploration of events & characters in the past which is always nice and definitely something we need after Season 4 & finally, actual nuances & complexities for the character of Henry Creel, finally! cause I can't take the characterization & the writing of his character that's been done in Season 4. (Though I heard he may have a romance, which I hope it is not the case, because one of the very few positives of his character is that there was absolutely no romance attached to his character compared to the rest so I really hope it does not happen...) So let's see what this play will do & what it might save going into Season 5 because it does look promising.
After that, we have the messy & campy one, the - return to Season 3: now I know what the fandom thinks of this season & while I agree it's far from perfect & turned many aspects of ST for the worse, the campiness & over the top aspect of certain elements works for what it's talking about & paying hommage to. It has it's own charm & has to me the better horror elements of ST so far or at least the better result; the antagonists were just fantastic to me plus the monster is one of the coolest. So it has still a lot in it that's very enjoyable, plus Scoops Troop is probably the best group of the show.
Now it's turned upside-down which likely means that putting it this way compared to the other was intentional and all I can think of about is that it's supposed to hint at again that weird nature of Season 3 that's different compared to most of the other seasons (mostly... *cough* Season 4 *cough*) and that they may point to it in some way. There's a lot of themes, choices & story elements of Season 3 that remains unanswered & vague, quite "meta" in fact. Perhaps on purpose, perhaps not since these elements, sometimes negative & which already started to appear in Season 2 are right now impossible for me to give a straight answer because The Duffers have not been reassuring about this part of their writing to say the least. So we will see how it turns out but it could be interesting.
Next we have to return to Season 1: which we can all agree is still the best written season of Stranger Things to date, it is by definition a masterpiece but I am not excited as perhaps others to return to it because they haven't done a good job following on the quality of it plus having a true continuity with the stories & themes it started and the way they explored those. I am afraid of more retcons they could pull with that season which clearly hints & answers different mysteries of it in a way that's completely different to what the latest seasons have given us plus not put forward all the storylines they've left in the mud for it's characters that aren't about romance.
It's always a pleasure going back to this season but if it's to justify the mistakes of the latest season, they can keep it. We need to the actual better parts & elements of that season. The photography, the cinematography, the music, the themes & ambience of it, the characters & the way they're explored... If not, there's no point.
And finally, the one I don't care for, the return to Season 4: I'm not going to repeat what I've already said about this season, most people know & you probably have already guessed what I feel about it but I truly feel it's the only really true mediocre content ST has given me so far. I will not act like it's the worst thing in the world because it would be simply not true but it has more bad than good and when it's bad, it's really bad. Not even a gorgeous usage of Kate Bush will save it for me (it ruins it itself... 🤭). I don't hate it like I used to anymore but I'm still very much annoyed by it.
Between retcons, uninteresting developments & characters, regressions, missed opportunities and an AMPLIFICATION of the worst aspects of Season 3 plus unnecessary long for what it has to say, I just haven't been able to appreciate any of it one year later. And I don't think I ever will, not even if the final season is a f*cking masterpiece & save what it did. Perhaps as a part of a whole series if the ending really makes up for it but alone, it's horrible to go through.
So yeah, that's it. They probably already started by the time I've finished and dropped this post but it's okay, I have fully accepted that time is not really my friend anymore. X) I hope y'all have a good day and hopefully we will get interesting stuff & surprises.

hiii hoping youre having a lovely day! so u see im making an attempt at building rw jungkook’s house on sims 4 (yes im very not busy right now (or i should be but am ignoring all my responsibilities)). could u maybe enlighten me on his taste on furniture?
edit: for whatever reason, i saw rw and my brain interpreted htttoh so sorry, anon! i kinda (not really oops) answered this in another ask but i’m keeping this up because of course i will
his new place with taehyung? or namgi’s townhouse? if the former, it’s a mix of both his and tae’s tastes (more leaning on tae because he just cares about that more). so as in the ficlet i posted, lots of wood (elm, yellow birch, poplar) and warm colors that blend well with their place being a jungle. they have lots of windows so the place is always very bright/well ventilated. i like the idea of a lot of their furniture being mid century modern because it can be both very utilitarian and practical while not sacrificing style (jk) and very colorful and vintage (tae) without overwhelming the other. basically they have a very aesthetic yet livid in house and all of jinhyung’s childhood pics will be the envy of all when in 10-20 years he posts them on whatever modern technology people are doing #throwback thursday on.
if the latter, namgi’s taste is very modern minimalist to the point it’s basically scandinavian/modern (but not ikea! they buy from small hyper specific shops! the customs shipping fees are astronomical!) with splashes of bold colors (art hoe namjoon) and earthy tones (bonsai lover namjoon).

What's on TV this week: 'Wu Assassins'
This week Pokémon: Detective Pikachu is available on 4K Blu-ray, 90210 is back and Netflix has a new anime documentary. Still, my most anticipated new release is Wu Assassins, a Netflix series that stars Iko Uwais (The Raid: Redemption, The Raid 2), and also features others like Li Jun Li (Blindspot), Lewis Tan (Into the Badlands, Iron Fist, Deadpool 2) and, fresh off of John Wick 3, Mark Dacascos.
Sports fans can tune into a new season of Hard Knocks following the Raiders, while gamers can enjoy some throwback action with Metal Wolf Chaos XD. Look after the break to check out each day's highlights, including trailers and let us know what you think (or what we missed).

Hello everyone and WELCOME to the inaugural edition of my new series: THROWBACK THURSDAY. In case you missed the introduction, here’s a quick summary.
“I am a firm believer in whole food cooking, the way our grandparents and great-grandparents used to prepare. So, I set out on a mission to find old cookbooks from the early to mid 1900’s. I found six cookbooks that fit the bill, with copyrights ranging from 1896 to 1954.
Tumblr media
I have decided to work my way through each recipe, one by one, book by book, and share my experiences with you along the way. So, on the 2nd and 4th Thursday each month, I’ll be sharing another “THROWBACK THURSDAY” recipe!”
Before I get into the recipe, I wanted to share 3 other books I’ve received since the introduction 2 weeks ago:
Tumblr media
HOUSEHOLD DISCOVERIES:
ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PRACTICAL RECIPES
AND PROCESSES
BY: SIDNEY MORSE
AND
MRS. CURTIS’S COOKBOOK:
A MANUAL OF INSTRUCTION IN
THE ART OF EVERYDAY COOKERY
BY: ISABEL GORDON CURTIS
COPYRIGHT: 1908
The first book is actually 2 books in one. HOUSEHOLD DISCOVERIES and MRS. CURTIS’S COOKBOOK. This book came with a HUGE bonus-jam packed with old newspaper clippings from the 1920’s, mostly recipes. There were also a few hand written recipes. (I’ll be including these recipes as a part of this series as well) The first book, which encompasses the first half, appears to be a house wife’s guide to daily living. There’s everything from house decorating, to daily routines, to soap making and more. I had to laugh, because there’s 3 chapters just on doing laundry! I could do a series just on this part of the book. (And, I might do that at some point when I have more time.) The second part is the cookbook, and the aspect of the book on which I will focus.
Tumblr media
GOOD THINGS TO EAT AND HOW TO PREPARE THEM
COPYRIGHT: 1913
This book appears to be an advertisement of sorts from a company called LARKIN, in which they show how to use their products in different recipes.
Tumblr media
WOMAN’S HOME COMPANION COOKBOOK
COPYRIGHT: 1943
This book has an introductory note that says:
“Every recipe in this book has been tested by the Woman’s Home Companion Home Service Center.”
I’ll be working my way through each book. I’ll try to do every recipe, but may end up skipping some. I’ll have to see how it goes.
NOW…onto the first book and recipe!
GOOD HOUSEKEEPING EVERYDAY COOKBOOK
COPYRIGHT: 1903
As a reminder, the first book I’m using is the GOOD HOUSEKEEPING EVERYDAY COOKBOOK from 1903. (Pictured above) It is an interesting book. As you can see, it’s somewhat small,  the recipes aren’t written as we do today and there aren’t any oven temperatures. This is to be expected since they used wood stoves at that time. The first few pages consist of “A few rules”, which discuss the measurements in the book.
The second section of the book is general remarks, which discusses:
classes of food
pantry care
washing dishes
using stale bread
how to combine ingredients
There are 20 food sections in the book, which include:
Baking powder breads
Beverages
Breads made with yeast
Cake, cookies, doughnuts, etc
Cereals
Cheese
Cold Desserts
Eggs
Fish
Frozen desserts
Hot desserts
Invalid cookery
Meats and poultry
meat and fish sauces
Pastry and pies
Sandwiches and canapes
Salads of meat, fish, vegetables, fruit
Shellfish
Soups
Vegetables
I’ll be starting with the first section, Baking Powder Breads, and the first recipe:
POPOVERS
Tumblr media
Here’s the recipe as it is printed in the book: (Yes, that’s it!)
Tumblr media
EQUIPMENT NEEDED:
Gem pan – I used a cast iron muffin pan. My research suggests that a gem pan is similar to a muffin pan, but more decorative.
Dover beater (Hand beater) – I purchased an antique one from Ebay (see photo) which I attempted to use. It worked…sort of. After this attempt, I found a new hand beater on Amazon, which I’ll use from now on. I’ll find a fun way to display the antique (Circa 1875).
Bowls measuring, cups, etc
Tumblr media
INGREDIENTS: (This is what I used)
1 cup 100% Organic All Purpose Einkorn Flour – sifted
1 Cup cream top (creamline) milk (non-homogenized)
1 pasture-raised egg – slightly beaten
1/4 Tsp Pink Himalayan Salt
Butter for greasing the pan
STEPS: (Here’s what I did)
Grease muffin/gem pan
Tumblr media
Add sifted flour and salt to a bowl and mix.
Gradually add in milk and egg.
Mix for two minutes with a dover beater
Tumblr media
  Pour batter into greased pan
Bake in a “FAST” oven for 30 minutes. (Remember – no oven temperatures.) My research indicates that a FAST oven translates to between 400 and 425 degrees Fahrenheit. I baked these at 425 for 30 minutes and it was perfect.
Remove from pan immediately and serve hot. Easier said then done! Here’s a photo of me ATTEMPTING to remove them from the pan!

They did come out, but got a bit squished. I was SO tempted to use muffin liners or parchment paper, but decided they PROBABLY didn’t have that back then. 😉 Here’s the result!

CLOSING THOUGHTS:
This was fun! Part of the excitement for me was just receiving the books and going through them. It’s fun reading the recipes and tips from back then. The popovers were very easy to make and very tasty, with butter and homemade jam. Despite my gluten allergy, I did taste them. I made a decision, when I began this series, that I would taste everything! I decided my itchy skin and other symptoms were worth it!
Next time on THROWBACK THURSDAY:

40TH DURBAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL - UNITY IN FILM
Tumblr media
The Durban International Film Festival turns 40 this year and is once again hosted by the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Creative Arts. The Festival officially opens on Thursday 18 July 2019 and runs for 10 days, screening over 150 feature films, documentaries and short films at various venues around Durban, South Africa. As well as offering free screenings, workshops and seminars in the Isiphethu Hub around the making and business of film.
The DIFF, together the 10thDurban FilmMart (DFM), the industry development programme in partnership with the eThekwini Municipality’s Durban Film Office, bring a combined 50 years of film to film-lovers and its hard-working creative industry.
The festival opens this year acclaimed South African director Jahmil X. T. Qubeka’s, Knuckle City a riveting exploration of the psychology of a fighter from the Mdantsane township of South Africa, directed by Jahmil X. T. Qubeka and produced and edited by award-winning Layla Swart of Yellowbone Entertainment, together with Mzansi Magic.
“We are very excited to be opening our 40th edition with this gritty raw film by Jahmil” says Chipo Zhou, Festival Manager. “This is a film which we believe will do very well as a cinema release, with boxing as the means to tell a the story, but its multi-layered narrative will resonate much deeper with audiences than what it appears at first. ”
In Qubeka’s words “It is my intention to capture the essence of life in Mdantsane and the restless pursuit of being a champion within a society that often dictates you are a failure. I am determined with this film to give audiences a glimpse into a world rarely seen, and a deeper understanding of the multi-faceted individuals inhabiting our land.”
A riveting and diverse DIFF programme this year includes 150 films from around the globe, comprising 74 feature films, 25 documentaries and 90 shorts; a community outreach programme, the Wavescapes Surf Film festival with 19 films focussed on surfing and water culture, the Isiphethu Hub a free industry programme for entry-level and emerging filmmakers, and the DFM for intermediate and professional filmmakers which includes the Talents Durban in partnership with the Berlin International Film Festival, a one-day Durban Does Docs documentary conference, a free Creative Corner which offers insights into costumes, make-up and set design, a finance forum for pre-selected film projects to pitch to potential investors and the like, and a full programme of master classes, workshops and seminars.
“The range of films this year reflect a changing, fast-paced world, where issues of identity and belonging, land and immigration, love and pain – find a way to surface and hold a mirror to the world, to either gaze at, engage with or react to,” says Zhou.
Feature films that are in competition this year include a meta-cinema work by director South African directed Roger Young, Love Runs Out, Angus Gibson’s Back of the Moon (South Africa) set in Sophiatown in 1958, Cronofobia (Switzerland) directed by Francesco Rizzi a psychological drama about suspended identity; a Brazilian drama Divine Love (Divino Amor) directed by Gabriel Mascaro tells the story registry office clerk who uses her position at the births, deaths and marriages department to try to dissuade couples from getting a divorce. Riccardo Salvetti’s Rwanda: The Untold Story, (Italy) offers a new take on the Rwandan genocide, through the first person experience, using live dramatic performance, intertwined with filmic reality; Tchaiko Omawale’s Solace (USA) is a moving and artful portrait of a smart, driven, and self- destructive teenage orphan struggling to find her place; Vai (New Zealand) by director Marina Alofagia McCartney is a portmanteau feature film by 9 female Pacific filmmakers. Chinese auteur, Zhang Wei’s The Rib is about the strained relationship between a young man wanting a sex change operation, and his Christian father; Nigerian film Mokalik directed by Kunle Afolayan follows an 11-year-old boy from the middle-class suburbs who spends the day as a lowly apprentice at a mechanic workshop in order to view life from the other side of the tracks.
Some of the documentaries in competition include South Africa director Nicole Schafer’s Buddha in Africa, which recently opened the Encounters Film Festival, Anbessa (Italy/USA) directed by Mo Scarpelli, a coming-of-age story that captures a boy taking on modernization, Maya Newell’s, In My Blood it Runs (Australia), about an Aboriginal boy whose traditional skills are of no value within the modern education system.  Fatma Riahi’s A Haunted Past (Qatar) is a personal portrait of a broken Tunisian-Bosnian family as ex-prisoner and ex-jihadist. Hamada (Sweden) by director Eloy Domínguez Serén, is a humorous, bittersweet portrait of three uncompromising twentysomethings cut off from the world in a refugee camp; Edward Watts and Waad al-Kateab’s For Sama (UK/USA/Syria) takes an intimate look at one young woman's struggles with love, war and motherhood. Mother I am Suffocating. This Is My Last Film About You by Lesotho filmmaker Mosese Lemohang Jeremiah, is an extended, poetic letter to the protagonist’s mother and motherland. Sara de Gouveia, The Sounds of Masks (SA/Portugal) follows a compelling storyteller and legendary Mozambiquan masked dancer. My Friend, Fela (Brazil) directed by Joel Zito Araujo, explores the life of legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti. A Girl in Return (Denmark) directed by Katrine W.Kjaer, an intimate tale about what happens when an adopted teenage girl decides to reclaim her lost identity.

The South Africa-meets-Bollywood Bhai’s Cafe, directed by Maynard Kraak, and described as a “poignant little gem of a film about family, love and urban gentrification” will officially close this year’s 40th Durban International Film Festival on Saturday 27 July at 7pm at Ster Kinekor, Gateway in Durban.
Produced by Razia Rawoot and Maynard Kraak of Razia Bawa Productions and West Five Films, with a screenplay by Darron Meyer and Aaron Naidoo, based on a story by Rawoot and Executive Producer / Actor, Mehboob Bawa, Bhai's Cafe centres on the Patel Family and their cafe, the cornerstone of the Wynberg community in Cape Town. The cafe comes under threat from a ruthless property developer, as Bhai's daughter, Rashmi, is swept off her feet, in true Bollywood fashion, by Patrick, the son of the property magnate. At the same time, Bhai and his family rally the community to square off with the property developer to stave off the bulldozers and save the Cafe.
“We are thrilled to be closing our fest with Bhai’s Cafe,” says Chipo Zhou, Manager of DIFF. “Using a light-hearted family film genre, the filmmakers have created a deliciously delightful film that ultimately shows us that we are more similar than we are different, and that quite possibly we, as humans, are more tolerant and embracing that we are led to believe.”
“It was an honour to accept Mehboob and Razia’s invitation to direct this film,” says Director Maynard Kraak whose films include Vrou Soek Boer, Finders Keepers and The Last Victims.  “It was also a personal challenge to do a film with dance and singing, something I’d never done in my twenty-year career.”
“The film is a life-long ambition of Mehboob’s and  a very personal story having grown up in a family that had a similar cafe in Claremont. With the advent of retail giants replacing family-owned general dealers, these bastions of the community are heading for extinction. I also grew up with these family businesses and it is a great shame to see them disappearing. In addition, Cape Town is subject to a worldwide gentrification trend that is robbing areas of their nuance and character.  I believe this universal theme can be enjoyed by audiences throughout South Africa and abroad.”
Actor /Comedian, Siv Ngesi plays Patrick, the love interest, who is incidentally a fan of Bollywood movies and music, and participates in multiple dance sequences and even sings in Hindi.(Ngesi also stars in DIFF’s opening film Knuckle City). Rashmi is played byrising talent Suraya Rose Santos. MehboobBawa (a 30 year veteran of film, television and radio) and Rehane Abrahams (who recently won a Best Performance Fleur Du Cap for her role inWomb of Fire)play Rashmi’s parents Magan Bhai and Mary, and Patrick’s father by Thabo Bopape. Others in the cast include Fahruq Valley-Omar, Elodie Venece, Rameez Nordien, Stavros Cassapis, Khalil Kathrada and Carishma Basday.
“We have introduced a romantic subplot with a Bollywood-inspired touch leading to heartbreak, emotion and drama,” explains Razia Rawoot and Mehboob Bawa. “There are Bollywood-styled song sequences with songs composed by Rajive Mohan from Durban, one of South Africa’s top musicians. The lyrics were written by poet Jamal Mukaddam and singer and songwriter Yusuf Bassa. Ultimately it’s a feel-good film, so everything is resolved in the end. But the journey for the characters and the audience is an exciting one filled with lots of humour as well”.
The film will have only one screening at DIFF before it goes on to a national South African big screen release on Valentine’s Day 2020.
Complementing the Isiphethu Hub is the Creative Corner at the Panini Room in the Maharani Hotel, Durban from 09:00 to 17:00 from 19 July to 22 July. This free programme, focusing on the creative sectors vital to the motion picture industry, hosts discussions and exhibitions providing networking, collaboration opportunities and entertainment for the public. Members of Durban’s growing television industry experts and organizations, such as the Writers Guild of South Africa and South African Guild of Actors will present sessions on acting, editing, costume, set, sound and make up design. The programme sees DFM partner with the WGSA and SAGA for a daily Script-to-Live programme of live script-reading sessions of completed, and in-development scripts.
To attend these free events, and for general security purposes, members of the public are required to present ID’s and register at the relevant reception areas at the venues.
