Tragedy can mean more than just pitiful circumstances. Tragedy is a horrible thing happening with no way to stop it. It is unavoidable, whether by the characters own flaws or the world they were placed in. Rand exhibits both of these versions of tragedy perfectly.

Rand as a character is often selfish, but his actions come back to him, multiplied by 10. Rand, as a teenager, around 16 or 17, goes to a party and does not babysit his younger sister for one night. As a result of this choice, she goes missing. She is never found. He lives with this guilt for the rest of his life.

Because of his guilt, he never leaves his small hometown. He sits alone in his bedroom, smoking cigarettes and weed, using drugs to avoid this paralyzing regret. He lives at home with his parents while his high school friends leave him behind.

The circumstances of his world also form tragedy. Those around him fall victim to monsters. The monsters take the appearances of those in the town, and mask themselves, integrating into it. The first experience he has with these monsters is with his only friend who remained in town, Rat. He goes into an alleyway, and calls out to Rand very weakly. Rand, when stepping into the alley, sees the only friend he has seen for years melted to the wall. In an urge to help, he tries to call for an ambulance, but realizes that there is nothing to do to help Rat. He dies in front of Rand, discussing how they believed the afterlife would appear. Rat's heart melted out of his chest and onto the dirty pavement.

His returning friends die in front of him. One is a monster and has been since he was 17 and they never knew. The other gets turned by who once was his girlfriend. Nothing could have changed this. It was destined to go wrong. It was destined for Rand to be alone.

The entire show is tragic, but Rand especially so. He is the last to die, despite thinking of writing suicide notes on multiple occasions. He is the last survivor in a world not built for him. His final vision is of his sister, telling him that he has changed. But the world didn't.

Dying in the tragedy is fast and painless; living through the tragedy will leave you obsessing over how you could have fixed it.

hi there, dykes4timrand here, coming to you with some tim rand propaganda, spoilers for blood in the bayou ep 3.

so for some context, my soso tragic blorbo, tim rand has just got shot with a stinger from a bug person, is actively melting, he locked himself in a bunker, and is now writing a letter to his parents saying that he killed his sister as he prepares to leave the bunker and face certain death. here’s that letter for you :)

“Dear, whoever finds this, please give this note to the Rand family if they’re still alive.

I killed her, maybe not in the literal sense, but if not for me she’s still be alive, and that’s not much different. I know you think it should’ve been me, shit I think that a lot too. Well, I guess this time it was.

It’s funny, I always imagined writing this but never expected to do it like this. I just want you all to know that I tried in the end, gave it my best fucking shot. Maybe all of those years of telling me to stop half adding my life finally got through to me. Maybe it’s just the adrenaline. I don’t have much else to say I just hope you guys made it out, and I want you to know that I went out fighting.
