Tim Hawkinson (American, b.1960)
Möbius Ship - 2006
@ Indianapolis Museum of Art, IN
" a mix of found objects and common household materials, including twist ties, craft wood, staples, and packing material [...] echoing the working methods of ship-in-a-bottle hobbyists, Hawkinson created a painstakingly detailed model ship that twists in upon itself [...]. The title is a witty play on Herman Melville’s novel Moby Dick [...]. Möbius Ship also humorously refers to the mathematical concept of the Möbius Strip, a surface that has only one side, and exists as a continuous curve."

I know you really like sea-related stuff and ships and designs that wouldn't exist in our plane, so I wanna point to a piece of art called "Mobius Ship" by Tim Hawkinson. It looks like something that would be in the more out-there places in your comic, like if a shipyard got twisted up after a pymaric overload. There's plenty of pics floating around online, just thought you'd get a kick out of it.
Reminds me of the design of the city of Sigil, from Planescape. But you're right, it looks like a tall ship that got caught up in a khert fire. Thanks for sharing :)

Inspiring artist:
Emotor by Tim Hawkinson
this is a piece made by Tim Hawkinson
He says -"Emoter falls into the category of body depiction—references to the body."
"I took a picture of myself and cut the features up into little pieces, like a puzzle, and rearranged the features. And each time I did it, I created a different emotion, as I think we all pretty much interpret the same basic emotions—frowning, smiling—but I was interested in seeing how much inflection and emotion I could get out of the face using a random input of signals."
Finally he said "It’s not about my identity; it’s about our identity and our experiences within our bodies, and our bodies’ relationship to the external world."
I think Hawkinson's artwork is so clever, he created almost a self- portrait however it's not actually him, only the emotions he feels within his body, this relates to my theme of self-image and perceptions and I think it would be really cool to delve and explore this idea even more about the emotions and feelings we get and our bodies.
Perhaps I might try make a piece that interacts and moves like this piece, that could be really interesting.
This is the video of Hawkinsons Emotor in motion.

Temporary Project - Firgure hanging Temporarily in Suspension. (28/10/22)
Today I created another piece inspired by the contemporary artist Tim Hawkinson.
(Image credit : Pace Gallery )
From this I focused on the idea of a human figure being temporarily suspended. As a child I used to lie on my back and hang my head over the side of my bed as i temporarily looked at the world in a different way. The figure being suspended mirrors this experience of seeing the world from a different perspective momentarily.
As Hawkinson used commonly found and recycled materials I did too for this piece. I began by making a wire skeleton.
The malable properties of the wire surprised me. I had never used wire before but I think that I might develoup this idea of adjustable wire figures and make a stop motion with them next week.
Then I added a skin like layer of recycled masking tape.I wasn't happy with the look at this stage so I added another layer to make it more aesthetically pleasing
Here are my notes describing my thought process throught this experiment
During this experiment I learned how to use wire. I was resourceful and used recycled materials where possible. I also gained another idea for a wire figure stop motion which I expect to be more effective that the wooded figure stop motion video I made a few weeks ago that had limited motion. I must make my figure for the stop motion very solid as I noticed that the wire figure was very flimsy during the early stages of constructing the wire skeleton in this instance. I am not overly happy with the finished look of the figure but I learned a lot during the process.
