YOU GET WELCOMED The crumbling Culloden wharf was built in 1907, overseen by Captain Herbert Anderson from up the coast in Parker's Cove. After decades of exposure to the open waves, this was the first mooring in the village to build a breakwater. Like any active port, it saw a hundred revisions through the years, new timbers and concrete as an angry Fundy smashed away the last. In 1942, Harry Hamblen built his fish plant here, with a dam up O'Connor Brook to harvest ice in winter. The plant brought electricity to the town for the first time, but soon proved unprofitable when increasingly larger vessels couldn't moor in the shallow cove. By the 1960s, both the plant and the dam were abandoned. The former is long gone now, but the latter still towers in the nearby forest. In their place came a half-dozen small fishing shacks, continuing the life of local fisherman for the next few decades. After years of erosion, the breakwater was further fortified in 1978, but time was running short for the industry. A wild winter storm in early 1996 smashed the wharf in two, finally marking an end to active use. By the time I first visited a decade ago, things were much the same as now. The last two structures were still standing, but after a recent demolition, all that remains are their concrete pads. This is a deeply compelling place to visit when you're an introverted person like me. I've had this spot to myself on every occasion I've been here, at any time of the year, a low-traffic visitation that few make by accident. It's not marked on the map, and draws no tourism. Much as I love it, even I only stop sporadically, because Culloden isn't on the way to anywhere. The General Butler
In 1821, the British, who still controlled Canada, imposed a high tax on timber from Lake Champlain, so the development of a passage from Lake Champlain to the Hudson River was crucial to the success of the timber industry in the Champlain Valley. The Champlain Canal was opened in 1823 and brought economic prosperity to the Lake Champlain valley. The canal connected Lake Champlain from Whitehall to the Hudson River north of Albany, near the confluence of the Erie Canal and the Hudson, and enabled the cost-effective transportation of goods from the lake to New York in less than two weeks. This vast network of canals and the adaptation of the Richelieu River in Quebec enabled the flow of goods between Quebec, the Atlantic coast via New York and the St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes.

Large quantities of wood, grain, iron and marble came from Lake Champlain. These goods were transported by the sailing canal boats which, due to the tax situation on Lake Champlain, were widely used and could sail on open waters and canals. To cope with this they were a cross between a towed canal boat and a sailing ship. One of them was the General Butler, which was launched in Essex in 1862. At that time these ships began to lose popularity as the steamboats came into power. Cost-wise, however, the canal boats were the most efficient, which meant that their first owner sold her after only three years, as she had already made him rich.

The last voyage, by Ernie Haas
On her last voyage she was under the command of her third owner, Captain William Montgomery of Isle La Motte. While sailing up the lake on 9 December 1876, a violent winter storm came up and as she approached Burlington, Butler's steering mechanism broke. The captain jury-rigged a tiller bar to the steering post and attempted to maneuver his craft around the breakwater. The attempt was unsuccessful, and the schooner crashed headfirst into the breakwater. The force of the water was so great that the boat was repeatedly lifted onto the ice-covered rocks. One by one, the ship's crew made the dangerous jump onto the breakwater. The captain was the last to leave the ship, which immediately sank into the 40-foot water where it is now resting.

After narrowly escaping death by drowning, the butlers' survivors now risked freezing to death on the breakwater. Without the heroic intervention of Burlington ship's chandler, James Wakefield, and his son, who rowed out in a lighthouse boat and brought all five to safety, they would all surely have perished. But the Butler was lost.

Her discovery in 1980 by divers offered archaeologists great insight into the design of sailing canal boats. In fact, prior to its discovery, historians debated whether or not sailing canal boats were even used on the lake.

I was liking Laelia more and more. We ordered lunch and it was so good that we wolfed it down. We relaxed over coffee and watched the harbor. I could see Allison’s little sailboat skimming out past the breakwater. Laelia appeared to be thinking something over. I let her have time.
Abruptly Laelia said, “Just how interested are you in the local history?”
“I find it to be fascinating,” I said. Then with a grin added, “Almost as fascinating as my present company.”
“Flatterer. Why don’t you come to my house and have a look at my collection?” she asked. Then with an impudent smile said, “No etchings — — — Just woodcuts.”
“That sounds irresistible,” I said, reaching impulsively across the table and taking her hand. We left the Stone Oven and strolled up the street, away from the harbor.
Laelia’s house was on a side street a few blocks from my clinic. Changer’s Ct. I commented on the name and Laelia responded by telling me that money changers used to have shops along the court. Most of the lots along the street were overgrown with brush and trees. Obviously, few had ever lived here. It took a very long time for brush and trees to reach the size of the ones that I saw.
Laelia’s house was another surprise. At first glance, it seemed to be a thoroughly modern cottage set among large trees. Then I noticed traces of the original drive. There was a maple growing in it that was easily five feet through the bole. What at first I took to be siding proved to be hand-cut, adze squared timbers on closer examination. The proportions of the house betrayed great age. The more I looked, the older I realized it was.
The door was made of oak and beautifully carved. It was topped by the Darkmoon crest and filled with scenes from the history of Flocking Bay. I noticed that there were none depicting the Marquost massacre.
The inside of the house showed none of the betraying signs of its age. All was neat. The walls were finished in modern style and the lights and computer in the corner were up to date. The kitchen where she went to fix a pot of tea was as tidy and modern as the rest.
In the living room was a locked, glass front bookcase of antique design, if not a genuine antique. The dairies and other books of her history collection were housed in it.
Laelia emerged from the kitchen with the teapot and cups. She laid out the service, solid silver, not plated, or I was completely off base. I had seen a set like it once before. In a museum. Hallmarked Paul Revere.
She poured the tea and unlocked the bookcase. I carefully took down the first of the Darkmoon dairies and looked at it. It had been rebound several times and was in excellent condition, given the age of its pages. I took down several other volumes at random to assess their condition.
It was a pleasant surprise. Diaries of that era are usually delicate and crumbling. The Darkmoon Diaries were in excellent condition. Even the Hilstrom Diaries were in good shape. I recognized that the early Hilstrom Diaries had many palimpsest pages. In the 1600’s paper and parchment were dear.
For the first time, I learned the full name of that first ancient enemy. He was Eben (short for Ebenezer) Gaston Hilstrom. I did not find the personality revealed in the pages to be a likeable one. In spite of that, he was an acute observer and had much to tell, including the names, not only of his descendants but those of the other ‘founders’ of Flocking Bay. The massacre was described in great and self-righteous detail. Interestingly enough, the matchlock musket that Eben used to slay the Shaman would never fire again, no matter what was done towards repairing it. It was retired to Eben’s mantelpiece with a small plaque.
They had named the town for the many bird rookeries in its sheltered waters and woods.
The first of the Darkmoons had come a year later, from Civilized Europe, though she spoke English only haltingly. She had been a stowaway, fleeing from a forced marriage in Poland. Two ‘honest sailors’ vouched for her and Eben bought her indenture from them to reimburse the ship for her passage. He was pleasantly surprised at the low price that he paid. At the normal and customary rates, she would be a free person in only five years. Eben altered the price on the document of sale and had her services for seven.
Sipping Laelia’s excellent English tea, I turned to the Darkmoon Dairies. She was busy with official business, working away at her computer in the corner of the room. A few people came and went on routine business needing a Justice of the Peace. A few traffic and parking citations, an application for a marriage license, nothing extraordinary at all. After the marriage license applicant had gone, Laelia got down a large ledger type book and copied particulars from the application into it. She shut the book with a snap and a satisfied smile.
I looked up from my reading. The Darkmoon Dairies were fascinating in themselves but there was something that I couldn’t quite put a finger on. It wasn’t their age. I was certain of that. I determined to get copies of both sets of books, if Laelia would allow it.
“Laelia,” I asked hesitantly, “would it be alright with you if I brought over my digital camera and an ultraviolet light?”
She looked up from her work with a secretive smile and asked, “Why the U.V. light?”
I carefully held one of the first volumes of the Darkmoon Dairies open and pointed to a page. “This is a palimpsest. The older writing was erased, probably with a sponge of vinegar, and new writing done over it at right angles. A U.V. light picture of the page with the proper digital enhancement will reveal the original writing as well as that of your ancestress’.”
Her eyebrows raised up and her pupils widened in interest. She nodded. “I had experts look at them years ago. They thought that these weren’t recoverable. If you think that they are and it is as nondestructive as that, go ahead. I will need accurate copies of anything you get, both the palimpsests and the main books. I need good readable copies to give to Mrs. Alderman at the library anyway.” She grinned lupinely and added, “You cannot believe the determination of that woman where a historical document is concerned.”
“Then I will make three copies,” I replied. “One for you, one for the library and one for myself.”
“Yourself? You will have it in your computer and on disk won’t you?”
“I like the feel of paper in my hands when I’m studying. I’m old fashioned that way.”
She had crossed the room in uncanny silence and I nearly jumped when she laid a hand on mine. “I would very much like to recover those palimpsests but there is a problem. I don’t want all of them to be known. Can I sort which ones are to be available?”
What could I say? It was the only thing possible, so I said, “Certainly. I will have to have copies in my computer and storage devices but I won’t release anything without your consent.”
I hadn’t even realized that she was tense until she relaxed. “Thank you, Dr. Fredricks. I don’t know for sure what is there but I do know, from family tradition, that some of the parchment in the first volumes of both the Hilstrom and Darkmoon Dairies was made from skins salvaged from the Marquost village.”
Hiding my excitement, I said, “I have it on good authority that though the Marquost did not write, per-se, they did have a system of pictographs. Some claim to be able to interpret the few pictograms that survive.” I should know. As the last Shaman, I was one! And I had lied about the writing. The Marquost had been genuinely literate.
Laelia said with some authority, “With my family history, I am most curious about any such things. I made tracings of the ones on the Blackwall before you built your clinic around it. Does your system work on stone as well as paper?”
I grinned back at her. “The photographic system was originated for recovering lost stone pictograms. I made some pictures before I built the clinic around the Blackwall. Do you want to see them?” I was already sure of the answer and was pulling a wallet of photos out of my inside coat pocket.
Laelia looked carefully at my enhanced photos, brows knitted in concentration. Almost absently she opened the bookcase and pulled a slim binder out of a hidden drawer. She laid it open and took my photos in hand. After many minutes she laid aside my photos and looked at her drawings with new eyes. She picked up a pencil and began to sketch rapidly, muttering, “Of course, now it makes sense.” Her pencil down, she looked at me and nodded. “Yes, definitely do your magic on the books. Who knows what will be revealed?”
I agreed at once, before she could change her mind. Over the next several weeks Allison became sure that there was something going on between Laelia and myself because I was spending so much time over at the little house on Changer’s Ct. The job of photographing three hundred years of written history was huge. Also, the dairies were fascinating in themselves.
Among the hardships that the people of Flocking Bay endured were many minor animal attacks. Dog bites, the occasional bear mauling, being raked by an eagle for getting too close to a nest were just a few. Occasionally there was a fatal attack but those seemed rare. There appeared to be little discernible pattern to the attacks.
On the other side, Flocking Bay was not your typical small town that would die out. The small fishing fleet always managed to find the best and highest priced catches. Gardens and surrounding farms bloomed. Stores found active trade. No matter the vicissitudes of the world outside, depressions, wars, epidemics or whatever, Flocking Bay continued to prosper quietly.
Few ever wanted to leave and most of those came back.
Through all of this vast span of time the Darkmoons had stayed and observed. Oddly, there was no mention of marriages or husbands. All of the Darkmoon children were female and carried the family name. In so small a town, it was peculiar that nobody seemed to notice. It was simply accepted that the Darkmoons would cling to their ‘foreign’ ways. They stayed to themselves, out of the way, nearly out of town, on the virtually deserted Changer’s Ct. For almost all of that time, the one thing that they did do was handle the duties of the Justice of the Peace. Animal Control had been added to that office in the 1950’s.
The Darkmoons were always ready with assistance for those in the town who needed help. It might be a loan or perhaps just a suggestion for a way to make money. The Darkmoons showed little or no need for money themselves. They always appeared to have whatever they needed for the people that came to them. Perhaps they were independently wealthy. Nobody knew — or cared.
The Hilstrom Dairies ended in 1867. The Darkmoon Dairies came right up to the present. Laelia was still writing in the most recent volume.
The photography had been, if a long project, at least a simple one. Now the real work began. Allison now thought that Laelia and I had broken up. I spent all of my time at the computer, enhancing the palimpsests first.
Some were of no interest, just old notes or handbills of one sort or another. Others were very different. There was the original Darkmoon indenture contract, now recovered. The forgery to gain an extra two years of service showed too. More important to me were the ones on homemade parchment.

Any book recommendations? I have a craving for something but I can't tell what it is yet and you have impeccable taste so i thought i would ask!

i’ve personally been reading a lot of ya novels recently (and fanfic but i mean…) and i have a lot of books on my incredibly long list of potential future reads, but i wouldn’t say i have very diverse tastes so i hope this suits you! (warnings are off the top of my head so if you think it might be a problem for you, i advise you to do your own research!)
ya:six of crows duology/grisha trilogy - two series popular on tumblr, both extensively plotted out and well executed with lovable characters and illegal hijinks. warnings for violence, noncon, harmful mental health institutions, psychological abuse
all for the game series - good for if you like sports and organized crime novels, bad for you if you have like. any triggers or a desire for fluff. however, it does develop a relationship built on explicit enthusiastic consent, and gives you that warm fuzzy feeling from the “family you make” trope. warnings for extreme violence, torture, noncon, csa, nonconsensual/medical/recreational drug use, alcohol abuse, psychological abuse/torture (i really shouldn’t be recommending this but i love it so much sorry)
carry on - short, fluffy, gay, there’s a magic school and a chosen one with decent worldbuilding. also includes fantasy creatures esp vampires and strong platonic m/f best friendship. warnings for violence and a lot of magic fire and explosions
the mapmakers trilogy (the glass sentence) - i read this series a couple of years ago and i loved how complex the world and ideas were, and the specific way it treated the concepts of time and perception. definitely worth a read. warnings for ??? probably violence and some creepy stuff but i don’t really remember
other fantasy:the hobbit - cliched but good for a reason! it’s definitely an easier read than lord of the rings or the silmarillion, and it was written as a standalone originally so it should be possible to comprehend even if you have no prior knowledge of the universe. warnings for violence? i don’t think it’s that bad but there are fights and such. also thorin is a meanie sometimes
all our wrong todays - time travel! makes you examine our world, creativity, and the concept of normal critically and fall back in love with mundanity. does require some mental gymnastics to keep up but the premise is solid. warnings for ??? i read it in january but remember very little of the specifics (which is not a condemnation of the book, just my memory)

Piles can be made of metal, cement, or timber. Solid pile is precast, which can be found at the building site or at an assembling point. Night in the Fire Nation summer always came with a sigh of relief, the sky powdered with stars and the dusty streets of the capital sagging after the day’s strain of busy travel and hot sunlight. People opened the lattices on their windows to tempt in the breeze rolling in off the eastern sea, and pulled mosquito curtains around their beds to keep the biting insects out. In the better districts, lanterns illuminated the metalled highways and cobbled alleys, tempting evening patrons towards the eateries and teahouses, and reassuring the wealthy that even in pernicious darkness they could walk without fear of cutpurses or thugs.
The Blue Spirit never frequented these brightly lit streets. The guard concentrated their patrols in the central part of the city, and that, coupled with the stringent punishments meted out for criminals who attacked nobility, meant only the very stupid or truly desperate succumbed to the temptation to pick well-lined pockets.
Sometimes, people saw him as a shadow flitting over the rooftops, nothing more than a silhouette against the stars, but he was gone so swiftly and made so little noise that most of the sightings were put down to wild imaginations or, more probably, indigestion. The guards tasked with tracking down the elusive vigilante faced more problems than just the Blue Spirit’s skills, however. In the few months since whispers began to permeate through the entire capital, he had become a fashionable topic of conversation, and young ladies swooned over reports of the shadow’s trim physique while their escorts grumbled about how he made a mockery of Fire Nation justice.
Very few in the richer areas of the city paid any attention to the reason for the Blue Spirit’s continued presence.
Crouched on the roof of a warehouse in the merchant docks, Zuko kept watch. The tiles were still warm beneath the touch of his thin gloves, the smell of fish and tar almost overpowering through the holes in his Blue Spirit mask. No lights shone in this part of the capital, populated as it was by the poor and broken-down, those who spent the long hours of their days toiling in the factories or on the coal ships that brought raw materials for the industry that drove the war. After the sun set and the whistles blew for the end of shifts, fatigue ruled here as the workers trudged home and waited for the next inevitable day to begin.
What few businesses had survived the stranglehold of the war were being starved out by the gangs that roved through the night-time streets, paying off or intimidating the official guards ordered to the wards as a show of force. With so many conscripted into the war, only the vulnerable remained, and they continued to be exploited because it was easier to let the poor suffer than to root out those causing the city to crumble from within.
Footsteps approached. Zuko’s hands clenched into fists as he recognised the hulking, scarred figure he had hunted for two weeks, but he forced himself to stillness. If he made a mistake now, all his research, all the risks he had taken, would come to nothing. The brute, an enforcer named Lao Shu, the Tiger, turned down a gloomy side alley, lost to sight briefly as Zuko moved to follow him. Any noise his feet made as he pursued was lost in the gentle lap of waves against the stone-piled harbour wall.
Wherever Lao Shu was headed, he wanted nobody following. Twice he changed direction to avoid the sound of voices, and when he finally came to a stop, he flicked his eyes left and right to make sure he was alone. From his vantage point on the cargo crane above, Zuko watched as the man knocked on a rusted door set in the side of a dilapidated boat shed, grunted a password, and slipped inside.
Behind the mask, Zuko’s eyes glittered. He waited for Lao Shu to emerge, and when he didn’t, he stretched out the cramp in his leg, climbed down the neck of the crane, and leapt wraithlike onto the shed. The roofing timbers were rotten, so Zuko trod carefully, using the light of the newly risen full moon to pick his way along the shingles. A jagged hole yawned just below the spine of the roof, and grumbled voices rose with flickering light through the cracked wooden planks, too low for Zuko to hear their words.
He recognised the tones, though. The high whine of the man nicknamed Guard Dog, who acted as a scout and a runner for the others; the gravelly bass of Lao Shu, who had been an engineer aboard a battle cruiser until a Water Tribe attack left soot in his lungs and half his crew dead; others Zuko knew by face if not by name, all of them lieutenants for the man he had come to find, the man who called himself the Captain.
As he crept up to the opening and leaned over the lip, a flash of grey feathers exploded out of the darkness. The pigeon-rat veered and fluttered into the night, the confused slap of its wings against the air loud in the quiet.
Zuko flattened himself against the roof in case his shadow gave him away. Below, the voices died away.
“What was that, Captain?” came the timid voice of Guard Dog, when nothing else moved.
A deeper voice grunted. “Lao Shu, did anyone follow you?”
“N-no, boss.”
“Did you see anyone!” demanded the Captain.
“No, I looked, I swear!” Lao Shu replied.
Another voice spoke up. “What if it was the -”
“Don’t say his name, Kazon,” Guard Dog hissed. “It summons him!”
“It would, if he wasn’t just some jumped up nobody in a mask,” Kazon retorted. “Stop being so paranoid. We stick him, he’ll bleed just like anyone else.”
“It cannot be the Blue Spirit,” declared the Captain, raising his voice to be heard above the squabbling of his lieutenants. “Nobody among you would be foolish enough to squeal after what happened to Yan Yu, would you?”
The men gathered around the Captain shuffled their feet, darting glances at their hands and those around them. Nobody wanted to remember their last sight of Yan Yu, a low-level grunt terrified of the Blue Spirit and the Captain both, as he pleaded forgiveness for spilling secrets to the city guard. It didn’t stop the Captain torching him from the feet up and then pushing him down the breakwater.
“No, boss,” they mumbled.
They startled when something tapped on the outer door.
“Heh, it’s probably just an alley scrounger,” Kazon joked, though he looked towards the open roof nervously.
“Guard Dog, whatever it is, deal with it,” said the Captain.
“But -”
“I’ve had enough of your paranoia. Do you really think the Blue Spirit would knock?”
“I… no, boss.” Guard Dog ducked his head and sidled out of sight of the others, down the narrow corridor that once connected the master’s yard with the foreman’s office.
Once his footsteps died away, the Captain turned to the rest of his lieutenants. “Does anyone else have something to say? No? Good.” He rocked to his feet, using the piled cord-rope he had been sitting in to steady himself. Although luckier than most of his battalion, he was still pained by the injury he sustained at the first siege of Ba Sing Se, when an earthbender swiped a boulder into his kneecap and brought him crashing down. He had been sprawled in the dirt when in a flash of brilliant light the avatar appeared and levelled the entire army, killing the general’s son and most of his friends.
“Since the subject has been brought up, it is time to discuss our shadowy friend,” he said, pushing away the memories. “Too many times has this rogue got in the way of our work. He doesn’t seem to realise only the strong survive in this city. Worse, he creates hope for the peasants, which means there is less room in their tiny skulls for fear of us.”
“It’s cutting into our profits!” cried Kazon.
“If he worked with the guard it’d be easy to sort him out,” Lao Shu grunted.
“He knows the guard work for us. He handed Ty Mai to that sake merchant in the coiner’s quarter. He and the butcher messed him up real bad, I heard.”
The captain growled for silence. “It appears our solution is simple. To protect ourselves and our investments, we must -”
“Hey,” Kazon interrupted. “Where’s Guard Dog?”
Guard Dog hadn’t returned from the door. He wasn’t the only one missing. Outside the small ring of firelight cast by the makeshift hearth, only six of the ten lieutenants remained, their pale faces sweaty with nerves. They pressed together so they could face the darkness and the threat that surely lurked within it.
Then, caught in a dim patch of moonlight, a shape moved.
“H-h-he’s here,” someone whispered.
“Then he’s saved us an effort,” the Captain snarled at them.
“What do we do, boss?”
The mask floated towards them, no sound of footsteps or breath with which to tell that there was really a man underneath it. The eye-holes were pitch black and blank, boring straight through to the fear in their hearts.
“He’s brave taking us out one at a time,” said the Captain. “But he’s no match for us all at once, and in the light, he has no advantage.
The mask paused its advance, cocking its head as if the small fire was something it had not considered.
“See? What do you have to be afraid of? Get him!”
The mask veered backwards. Behind the thugs, the flames roared to the height of the ceiling.
And extinguished.
Unable to see, unsure of what made them blind, Lao Shu and the others panicked. When of the first of them grunted and yelled in pain they lashed out, swinging fists and fireballs into the darkness.
Zuko danced between his opponents. His swords sheathed, he used his fists to break their stances, tripped them with his legs. Most of these men had been his father’s soldiers once, spat out by the system when they lost their usefulness, and he didn’t want to kill them. But many were twice his size and in the brief flashes of the Captain’s firebending he saw the murderous intent in their eyes.
Someone grabbed him around the shoulders, pinning his arms at his sides. Lao Shu lumbered towards him with an iron chain whirling above his head. Zuko ducked, dragging his attacker to the floor with the unexpected dead weight of his body, then surged upwards. He caught the big man in the groin then struck an elbow at the back of his neck to bring him down.
Within minutes all six lay sprawled on the floor in a circle around the Blue Spirit, groaning over their injuries or else unconscious in untidy heaps. Only the Captain stood unscathed, his hands out to ward off the silent figure who every moment seemed more and more like a demon. He heard the dry rasp of steel as the Spirit reached up and drew his signature liangdao from the sheath on his back.
“You’ve got some nerve,” the Captain growled. His voice broke over the words. “What do you want?”
The Spirit remained implacable.
“Hey, now listen,” he stammered as the Spirit moved toward him. “I could use a guy like you. What are you after? Money? I got more than enough for you.”
Another step.
“Not money. Alright. You’re right, I know it’s not fair, what we do, but what else is there? Nobody cares about us, not the Fire Lord, not the guard, nobody. They use us up then cast us off like we’re nothing. What’s wrong with taking a little back?”
You don’t take back, Zuko wanted to yell. You do to others what those in power did to you. He forced his anger down. There would be time to deal with the ministers and the bureaucrats later. He could not allow himself to be distracted.
The Captain staggered as his weakened knee buckled beneath him, flames igniting in his palms. “What do you want?”
The Spirit halted. His mask tipped to the side and paused, then, very slowly, one of the swords raised until it pointed straight at the Captain’s chest. The message was clear.
Rubble shifted behind Zuko. He turned just as Lao Shu lunged out of the darkness, hoping to catch him off guard and slam him to the floor. The Captain took advantage of the momentary distraction and sent a stream of fire hurtling from his fist, but Zuko was already twisting away, and the flames caught on his adversary’s clothes instead. Lao Shu screamed as they licked higher, filling the dank meeting place with the stench of burning hair and cooking meat.
 The Captain fled. Zuko hesitated, but saw in an instant Lao Shu couldn’t be saved. The man’s flailing tipped him into a half-rotten barrel of tar that collapsed under his weight. Black liquid spilled against the walls, the fire trailing after, hungry for the scraps of sailcloth and seasoned wood stockpiled for boat repairs. The men still lying unconscious wouldn’t stand a chance, and Lao Shu was already dead.
Cursing, he sheathed his swords and grabbed at the bodies on the ground. The fire raced him. It slithered along the walls of the corridor as he dragged the survivors to the door and the clean air beyond. Heat scorched his throat though he tried to push the flames back with his bending, so slow its spread. Smoke stung his eyes. Just a few more steps…
He kicked the door off its rusted hinges. Air sucked in with a roar to feed the blaze behind him. Zuko bent it back and hauled the four he’d been able to save clear of the structure. So much time had cost him a lead on the Captain.
A groan wobbled up from near Zuko’s feet. Guard Dog slapped his hand over his face, rubbing fingers over eyes caked with ash to see the impassive face of the Blue Spirit staring down at him, framed by the burning building.
“You – you – we were in there?” he gibbered. “You saved us, why -?” But he blinked and the spirit vanished.
The Captain was already three streets away. He tripped over a flock of cat-gulls scrounging through a wharfside midden, startling them into affronted, squawking flight. Although he had known these streets most of his life, terror and the darkness turned him around, until he found himself limping across the main thoroughfare that led from the city proper to the military docks in the northern part of the bay. In the full moonlight the flagstones shone like pearls, he himself a dark and easily tracked blot upon their flawless surface.
He folded to his knees, the old injury flaring with a stab of white fire up his leg. Smoke clung to his clothes and his breath dragged in his lungs as his body recovered from the unaccustomed exercise. Let the Spirit catch up, damn him, and throw him to the guard. He had survived the avatar’s attack at Ba Sing Se, he would survive whatever this jumped-up vigilante had to throw at him.
But something strange was happening in the harbour. The water churned and bubbled with froth that shone in the moonlight, making the boats tied at the outer jetties bob like toys in a bathtub. Above the low splashes against the breakwater came a steady, metallic groan of protest as the three gigantic troop carriers anchored in the deeper water strained at their mooring lines. Astonished, the Captain watched as they pitched and heaved as if caught in a maelstrom on the open ocean rather than safe behind the breakwater on a clear, calm night. He heard one anchor chain snap, saw the ship buck one last time as it was carried across the bay, felt the rattle in his bones as it crashed and broke open against the stone pilings that held back the ocean.
From the roof of an armoury warehouse, Zuko saw it too. The impossibility of the sight brought him to a standstill, all thought of the Captain forgotten. The welding along the hull of the second ship popped and contorted, its spine broken against its mate, the whole side of the vessel splitting like an egg to reveal the internal structure and the few unlucky souls trapped within. Fires broke out where sparks met engine oil, and Zuko smelled the tang of hot metal on the wind.
He had to move. Such an act of sabotage… he had to stop it.
As he leapt between buildings he lost sight of the carnage, but the disturbing sounds coming from the dock spurred him onwards. In place of screeching metal something large glugged and sucked at the water. Zuko picked up his pace.
He skidded to a halt moments later as the last line of buildings fell away. Nothing stood between him and what was happening on the water, and nothing prepared him for what he was seeing.
“What the…”
Backlit by the burning wrecks of the two other troop carriers and the moon above, the third ship had been pulled to the mouth of the harbour by ropes of mud and seaweed that seemed born of the ocean itself. Waves lapped white at the dark hull as it was dragged under, crushed in an awful display of elemental power.
“Look over there!”
It took a moment of panicked scrambling for Zuko to realise he was already well hidden, and that the people spilling from the tavern weren’t looking at him. The grizzled old sailor who had spoken pointed at the pier where the largest of the troop carriers had been moored.
Someone stood there. From such a distance, details were impossible to make out, especially given the figure’s black clothing and the dim, wavering light of the flames. Without conscious thought, Zuko started running again, his eyes fixed on the stranger and the strange swinging movements of their arms. Several people shouted shocked curses behind him, but he ignored them like a moose-lion would flies. He had to get to the pier. He had to stop whatever madness this was, before the situation got worse.
Lights bobbed from behind the nearest row of buildings ahead as the city guard closed in. At their panicked calls the figure turned, hands raised in a defensive stance. Zuko tumbled to a halt from his headlong sprint less than fifty yards away, liangdao poised and every line in his body prepared for an attack.
Even so close he couldn’t be sure the stranger was human. Face paint in shades of black, grey, and white striped sharp angles across whatever defining features the saboteur possessed, blurring it at the edges and exacerbating certain features into something unearthly and grotesque. Looking down, Zuko found his face growing hot behind the Blue Spirit mask. Whoever this person was, she was female. The material that hid her intentions in the darkness did less to hide the lithe curves of her hips or the soft swell of her breasts. His gaze lingered despite his best intentions, watching as her shoulders lost their predatory tension. Her eyes, wide and pale in the moonlight, roved over him from mask to feet and back again, though he couldn’t tell if she was just surprised or observing him as keenly as he was her. An unexpected tingle shivered down his spine.
“Over here! The Blue Spirit!”
The sound of his name made him spin around, swords raised to face the threat of the guard. They halted at the edge of the dock, unwilling to approach the dangerous vigilante but conscious that short of diving into the water, he had nowhere to run.
“What are you waiting for, lads?” called out their captain. “Get him!”
Zuko shot a look over his shoulder as a pair of firebenders stormed towards him, but the strange woman was nowhere to be seen. He cursed inwardly and shook her from his mind as he fell into a fighting stance. The faster he dispatched the guard, the sooner her could sneak back to his rooms and catch some sleep before the inevitable chaos this act of terrorism would cause.
The night shattered with a deafening crack. The guards stuttered to a halt to watch and Zuko used the distraction to dart through their lines, not slowing his pace until he gained the roof of a fish-salting warehouse and gave in to his curiosity to look back. Bystanders gasped and raised prayers to Agni as they watched the final troop carrier sink beneath the sea, snapped in half by the forces pressing it from all sides. Already mutters of spirits and supernatural retribution rippled through the crowd. By tomorrow the tale be exaggerated, the wreckage scattered on the breakwater a damning corroboration of the story and an unsettling message to the Fire Nation’s enemies across the ocean.
Zuko was about to have a very long day.

Buffalohistory.com explains the origin of the canal:  “Buffalo Creek was the original harbor of the port of Buffalo, and, in its original state, was shallow at the mouth and frequently closed by a gravel bar. In 1826 the original resolution calling for the improvement of this condition was adopted, and provided, at first, for pier construction on the north and south sides of Buffalo Creek. Subsequently a masonry sea wall, 5,400 feet long, was built along the lake shore south of the harbor entrance, and a sand-catch pier of piles and stone 879 feet long was built out from the shore. Between 1868 and 1893 a detached breakwater, 7,600 feet long, was built of timber cribs about half a mile distant from the shore and parallel with it. A shore arm, four thousand feet long, to extend to the south end of this breakwater, was projected in 1874 but was wrecked by storm while it was in process of construction, in 1893.“

The Port of Karachi
The Port of Karachi (Urdu: کراچی بندرگاہ‎ Bandar gāh Karāchī) is one of the South Asia's largest and busiest deep-water seaports, handling about 60% of the nation's cargo (25 million tons per annum) located in Karachi, Pakistan. It is located between the Karachi towns of Kiamari and Saddar, close to the main business district and several industrial areas. The geographic position of the port places it in close proximity to major shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. The administration of the port is carried out by the Karachi Port Trust, which was established in the nineteenth century.
The history of the port is intertwined with that of the city of Karachi. Several ancient ports have been attributed in the area including "Krokola", "Morontobara" (Woman's Harbour) (mentioned by Nearchus),[1] Barbarikon (the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea,[2] and Debal (a city captured by the Muslim general Muhammad bin Qasim in 712 CE). There is a reference to the early existence of the port of Karachi in the "Umdah", by the Arab navigator Sulaiman al Mahri (AD 1511), who mentions "Ras al Karazi" and "Ras Karashi" while describing a route along the coast from Pasni to Ras Karashi. Karachi is also mentioned in the sixteenth century Turkish treatise Mir'ât ül Memâlik (Mirror of Countries, 1557) by the Ottoman captain Seydi Ali Reis, which is a compilation of sailing directions from the Portuguese island of Diu to Hormuz in the Persian Gulf. It warns sailors about whirlpools and advises them to seek safety in "Kaurashi" harbour if they found themselves drifting dangerously. There is a legend of a prosperous coastal town called Kharak in the estuary of the Hub River (west of modern Karachi) in the late 17th and early eighteenth century.
In 1728 heavy rains silted up the harbour and resulted in the merchants of Kharak relocating to the area of modern Karachi. In 1729, they built a new fortified town called Kolachi (also known as Kalachi-jo-Kun and Kolachi-jo-Goth) on high ground north of Karachi bay, surrounded by a 16-foot (5 m) high mud and timber-reinforced wall with gun-mounted turrets and two gates. The gate facing the sea was called "Kharadar" (salt gate), and the gate facing the Lyari River was called "Mithadar" (sweet gate). The modern neighbourhoods around the location of the gates are called Mithadar and Kharadar. Surrounded by mangrove swamps to the east, the sea to the southwest, and the Layari river to the north, the town was well defended and engaged in a profitable trade with Muscat and Bahrain. From 1729 to 1783 the strategic location of Kolachi saw the town change hands several times between the Khans of Kalat and the rulers of Sind. In 1783, after two prolonged sieges the town fell to the Talpur Mirs of Sind, who constructed a fort mounted with cannons on Manora island at the harbour entrance.[3]
The prominence of the port attracted the British, who opened a factory in Karachi at the end of the eighteenth century but disagreements with the Mirs on trade tariffs led to the closure of the factory. The British were concerned about Russian expansion towards the Arabian Sea, so in 1839 they occupied Karachi and later the whole of the Sindh. The port served as a landing point for troops during the First Afghan War. The river Indus was an important artery of communication between Karachi and Jhirk Near Kotri Sindh, was an important river port. The Indus flotilla used large quantities of firewood and it was kept to fuel steamboats. A number of British companies opened offices and warehouses in Karachi and the population increased rapidly. By 1852, Karachi was an established city with a population of 14,000 and a prosperous overseas trade. The modern port began to take shape in 1854, when the main navigation channel was dredged and a mole or causeway was constructed to link the main harbour with the rest of the city. This was followed by construction of Manora breakwater, Keamari Groyne, the Napier Mole Bridge and the Native Jetty Bridge. The construction of the wharves started in 1882, and by 1914 the East Wharf and the Napier Mole Boat Wharf were complete while 1927 and 1944, the West Wharf, the lighterage berths and the ship-repair berths were constructed between 1927 and 1944.
From the 1861 the Sindh Railway line connected Karachi to the cotton and wheat producing areas of the Sindh and northern British raj and by 1899 Karachi was the largest wheat and cotton exporting port in South Asia. The period between 1856 and 1872 saw a marked increase in trade, especially during the American Civil War when cotton from Sindh replaced American cotton as a raw material in the British textile industry and the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. Another major export was oil brought by rail from the Sui region in Balochistan. Karachi's importance as a gateway to British India increased in 1911 when the capital was moved from Calcutta to Delhi. Karachi was an important military base during the First World War (1914–18) because it was the first British raj port of call for ships coming through the Suez Canal and was the gateway to Afghanistan and the Russian Empire. In 1936 the Sindh district of the Bombay Presidency was reorganised as a new province with Karachi as the capital instead of the traditional capital of Hyderabad. This led to new public services and buildings, thus increasing its population and importance. Karachi was again a military base and port for supplies to the Russian front during the Second World War (1939–1945). In 1947, Karachi became the capital of the new nation of Pakistan, resulting in a growth in population as it absorbed hundreds of thousands of refugees.
Although the capital moved to Islamabad in 1959, Karachi remains the economic center of Pakistan, accounting for the largest proportion of national GDP based in part on the commerce conducted through the Port of Karachi and Port Qasim. The port was destroyed by the Indian Navy (codenamed Operation Trident) during the hostilities of the 1971 war.[4]
  Port facilities
The port comprises a deep natural harbour with an 11 kilometre long approach channel which provides safe navigation for vessels up to 75,000 metric tons deadweight (DWT). The main areas of port activity are two wharves; East Wharf with seventeen vessel berths and West Wharf with thirteen vessel berths. The maximum depth alongside the berths is currently 11.3 metres. The two wharves extend in opposite directions along the upper harbour – the East Wharf northeast from Kiamari Island and the West Wharf southwest from Saddar town. The two wharves each include a container terminal:
Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT) opened in 1996 at West Wharf berths 28-30. It has a handling capacity of 300,000 TEUs per annum and handles container ships up to 11-metre draught. The total quay length is 600 metres divided into two container berths. The terminal is equipped with three Panamax cranes and one post-Panamax crane.
Pakistan International Container Terminal (PICT) in 2002 at East Wharf berths 6-9. It has a handling capacity of 350,000 TEUs per annum and handles container ships up to 11.5-metre draught. The total quay length is 600 metres divided into two container berths. The terminal is equipped with two Panamax cranes.
KICT and PICT have a nearby competitor in the privately operated Al-Hamd International Container Terminal (AICT), which opened in 2001 at a site west of the Layari river. AICT is situated next to the Sindh Industrial Trading Estate, the new truck stand at Hawkes Bay Road and close to the RCD Highway, Super Highway and the future Layari Bypass.
There are also three liquid cargo-handling berths (oil piers), two ship repair jetties and a shipyard and engineering facility.[5] The shipyard carries out shipbuilding and repair for both commercial and military customers on a 29-hectare (70 acres) site at the West Wharf. The facilities include a large shipbuilding hall, three shipbuilding berths, two dry-docks and three foundries.[6]
  Expansion
The flow of cargo to and from the port is hampered by severe congestion in the harbour with several other maritime facilities located close to the port. Adjacent to the West Wharf is the Karachi Fishing Harbour, which is administered separately from the port and is the base for a fleet of several thousand fishing vessels. The West Wharf also hosts a ship repair facility and shipyard and a naval dockyard at the tip of the wharf, while to the south of the port are the Karachi Naval Base and the Kiamari Boat Club.
The Port of Karachi also faces competition from a new private terminal located 5 kilometres to the west. In recent years the federal government has attempted to alleviate the increased congestion by constructing a second port in Karachi thirty kilometres to the east at Port Qasim and a third major port at Gwadar, about 650 kilometres west of Karachi.
The Karachi Fishing Harbour has been upgraded recently, and a second fishing harbour has been built 18 kilometres away at Korangi. The transfer of some naval vessels to the new naval base at Ormara has brought about further reductions in congestion.
Further deepening of the port has been planned by the Karachi Port Trust in order to enhance facilities. The channel is being dredged initially to 13.5 metres deep to cater for 12-metre draught vessels at all tides. At Kiamari Groyne, located at the outer tip of the harbour, dredging will be to 16.5 metres to enable vessels up to 300 metres long to dock. Other projects to expand the port include:[7]
An increase the handling capacity of KICT from 300,000 TEUs to 400,000 TEUs per annum
Two new berths at KICT with 14 metres depth alongside and an additional 100,000 m² terminal/stacking area
Installation of modern facilities at PICT (completed in April 2004)
A new bulk cargo terminal at East Wharf
Reconstruction of the oldest oil pier to allow tankers of 90,000 metric tons deadweight (DWT) to berth
A new 100-acre (0.4 km2) cargo village to cater for containers and general and bulk cargo
Reconstruction of the 100-year old NMB Wharf to enhance the berthing of passenger vessels
The purchase of a new dredger, two hopper barges, two harbour tugs, two water barges, an anchor hoist vessel, two pilot boats, and a dredger tender
A new desalination plant to address the city's water shortage problem
A 500-foot (150 m) high Port Tower for commercial and recreational use including a revolving restaurant
The construction of a 500 acre (2 km²) Port Town with 13,000 homes for port workers at nearby Hawkes Bay
A new Port Club at Chinna Creek adjacent to the East Wharf
On 9 November 2007, the Karachi Port Trust signed a US$1 billion agreement with Hutchison Port Holdings to construct a new terminal called the "Pakistan Deep Water Container Port", which would begin operations by 2010, and would have ten berths capable of handling Super Post Panamax container ships.[8][9]
  Environmental concerns
The area around the harbour includes several mangrove forests which are constantly under threat from human activities. To the east of the port lies Chinna Creek, which covers about 6 km² and is dotted with mangrove islands. To the southwest of the port is another much larger mangrove forest in the bay formed by several islands and Manora breakwater; the river Layari flows into this bay, bringing waste from upstream suburbs.[10]
The beach immediately east of the harbour was the scene of a significant oil spillage when the Greek-registered Tasman Spirit ran aground on 28 July 2003.[11] The environmental impact included large numbers of dead fish and turtles and damage to a key mangrove forest, as well as dozens of people suffering nausea.[12]
  Labour relations
The Karachi Dock Labour Board (KDLB) is responsible for labour relations between employees and the Karachi Port Trust. In October 2006, the Pakistan government decided to close down Karachi Dock Labour Board by the end of the year as part of its port strategy and under the National Trade Corridor (NTC) programme. The closure of KDLB would cost around Rs 4.2 billion ($70 million) to the national exchequer.[13]

Enchanting Summer Vacation at Lagen Island of El Nido Resorts
While this year’s summer season will probably be spent staying at home, I just can’t help but remember and dream about our enchanting summer vacation last year at Lagen Island of El Nido Resorts. This was our third time to visit El Nido, Palawan and the second island we visited among the four island resorts of El Nido Resorts (Read: My Private Island Paradise at El Nido Resorts’ Apulit Island), but it was definitely the most beautiful and magical experience we had.
The adventure to Lagen starts at the El Nido Resorts Jetty Port inside the Lio Tourism Estate where the El Nido Airport is also located. If you are taking an AirSwift flight to El Nido, then it only takes a 10-minute transfer from the airport to the port. For this trip, my fiancé and I had already been staying at a hotel in Lio Estate since we had attended a wedding there earlier, so we simply took a hotel shuttle to the port. The boat transfer schedules are based on AirSwift flights, so you should coordinate with the resort regarding your desired transfer schedule. Roundtrip transfers from Lio are usually included in their packages.
The boat ride to Lagen Island takes around 50 minutes from the port, so you can take the opportunity to marvel at the turquoise waters and limestone cliffs all around you. Lagen Island is nestled between a lush four-hectare forest and a calm, shallow lagoon. Among the four distinct islands of El Nido Resorts, Lagen is considered as the Eco-Sanctuary island resort as it has the densest forest over limestone out of the 45 islands and islets of Bacuit Bay.
Upon arriving at the island, we were directed towards the front desk where visitors were greeted with welcome drinks and a colorful song performance from the local troupe. We had booked our 3-day, 2-night package at the PTAA Travel Tour Expo at P29,900 a night for the full package which included full board meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) for two person, round-trip transfers to and from Lio, use of water sport equipment, and complimentary island hopping activities during our stay. However, a Conservation Fee of P200 was charged separately.
Guests will also be given an activity sheet which lists down the schedules for all the optional activities they can do during their stay, including the island hopping adventures. After just a few minutes, we were given the keys and led to our room. Lagen Island has a total of 51 rooms that incorporate timber recycled from old Filipino homes for floors and furnishings to evoke charm and quiet luxury.
The most popular rooms are the Water Cottages which are built on stilts above the water. Unfortunately, these were already fully booked on our chosen dates so we had to get another room type. That’s okay since we already experienced staying at a water cottage during our stay in Apulit Island. They also have the bigger Beachfront Cottages which have a panoramic view of the cove.
We were booked at one of their Forest Rooms which are located where the lush forest meets the resort. These are actually closer to the main activity areas of the resort where the clubhouse and swimming pools can be found.
The room itself is just simple but has all the basic amenities you would need in a resort stay. Wifi is free all around the resort, although there are some areas where it might not be as stable. That’s quite understandable since we are staying in an island in the middle of the ocean.
El Nido Resorts is committed to providing leisurely, engaging, and educational experiences and services to all guests in a manner that has the least impact on the environment and promotes respect for El Nido’s local people and culture. This includes low-impact and sustainable guest experiences, plus water and energy conservation systems. You won’t find single use plastic bottles here, and all the toiletries make use of reusable containers.
What I really liked about my room is that it opens to a private veranda where I could lay on the sofa while watching how nature and modern amenities work together seamlessly to create this tranquil paradise.
The swimming pool just outside the balcony looks really inviting, but I’m already hungry! Guests availing of the full package get complimentary breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffets throughout their stay. That means if you arrive early on your first day, you can already have lunch even if your room may not yet be available.
Lunch is served at the clubhouse restaurant which has both air-conditioned and al fresco dining areas. Guests can partake of appetizers including salads and a bread selection. Cooked dishes are spread on the buffet table consisting of local and international dishes as well.
The best area would be the grill station where you can have various fish and meat cooked fresh and hot. Desserts are also available like fruits, cakes, and local delicacies. Drinks are not included in the buffet but can be ordered separately.
After our hearty lunch, we rested for a while inside our rooms before heading back down to relax by the swimming pool. We ordered some drinks from the pool bar while enjoying a dip in the pool.
Lagen Island is known for its enriching encounters around the resort. Guests have free use of non-motorized water sport equipments on a first-come first-served basis. I spent a few round kayaking around the cove on their glass bottom boats. Snorkelling is also available on the house reef.
The main beachfront cove of Lagen Island is protected by breakwaters so I could easily do Paddle Boarding on its calm waters. I’m sure my doctors do not recommend this activity, especially after my hip replacement surgery, but where else will I be able to get these cool photos?
There are other things to do at the resort for those who are not so fond of water sports. They can play billiards and ping pong near the boutique shop at the clubhouse.
There is also a small air-conditioned library nearby where you can browse books and magazines. This is also a great place to get away from the heat of the summer. Children can also have fun at the Kid’s Playroom which also comes with several games and activities.
Make sure you book your spots on the Sunset Cruise which happens everyday at 5:00pm. This one-hour activity takes guests to a scenic spot in the island where you can watch the El Nido sunset in all its splendor.
When we got back to the resort, it was about time for the dinner buffet which is just what we needed after a tiring day around Lagen Island. This was just Day 1 so we slept early that night and got ready for a new set of adventures the following day.
Lagen Island serves as a sanctuary for a diverse variety of birds and mammals. This is why we decided to join the Bird Watching activity which starts at exactly 6:00am. Guests can observe and delight in different endemic species flourishing in their natural habitat. The expert guide will provide binoculars and will instruct you where to point them. We saw a Palawan Hornbill and other bird species flying from the limestone cliffs to the forest trees.
We also saw some exotic creatures just casually walking around the resort. This Water Monitor Lizard or bayawak was just minding his own business. They also have a Forest Guided Hike at 8:00am where guests can hike through Lagen’s forest trail which leads to a rewarding view of one of the coves on the other side of the island.
We decided to skip the forest hike because we needed to have breakfast before our island hopping activities. So after a quick shower, it was time to head back to the clubhouse for our breakfast buffet.
The morning spread included an assortment of breads, juices, sausages, longganisa, and lots of crunchy bacon. We needed to load up on energy because it was going to be a busy morning hopping around the islands of Bacuit Bay.
There are three Island Hopping group activities to choose from, each with its own destinations and schedules. These are all included in the full package so there were no additional fees for us. Since we had already done the popular Small and Big Lagoon tour during our previous visit to El Nido (Read: Paradise Within Our Reach at Lio, El Nido), we chose to do Tour 2 which starts from 9:30am up to 2:00pm. First stop was the picturesque Cudugnon Cave.
The cave looks so beautiful from the inside, but it takes a lot of effort just to get here! I had to crawl through a small rocky opening, with the help of our tour guide. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to do the twists and turns that my hips had to do, but thankfully I made it through.
Our next destination was Snake Island whose main feature is a sandbar that stretches all the way to the neighboring island. During low tide, visitors can simply walk from one island to the other, which my fiancé actually did. It took him around 15 minutes walking on the shallow waters.
The area is a great place to take a swim, especially near the sandbars where you can take lots of photos. Lagen island does not have a natural beach, so this is a better swimming spot. Unfortunately, my fiancé forgot that his mobile phone was actually still inside his board shorts, so it ended up dying during this trip. :(
It was almost noon when we got to our third stop, the Dibuluan Beach Club which is a private island also owned by El Nido Resorts. Guests from the other El Nido Resorts properties are free to visit this island during their stay.
Dibuluan Island is where we will be having our lunch, but before that, we did a little bit of snorkelling first. Various water sports are also available such as hobie cat sailing, wind surfing, and kayaking.
A simple buffet lunch was served beachside. The selection was not as good as the one served at Lagen Island, but the scenery and our hunger more than made up for it.
After a little siesta on the cabanas by the beach, it was time to go back to Lagen Island, but not before we made a short detour. The Cathedral Cave was the last stop on our trip, but we were only able to see it from the outside since they said that boats were not allowed inside.
We got back to Lagen island at around 3:00pm, so we just relaxed near the beach and enjoyed all the other amenities around the resort.
When it was almost sunset, we went to the pool bar to enjoy their Happy Hour promotion which is available every day from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. Guests can enjoy Buy 1 Take 1 on selected cocktails.
We ordered a pair of Singapore Slings and watched another scenic sunset, this time on with cold drinks on hand.
But the night wasn’t over just yet, because we had scheduled a Private Dinner by the jetty for ourselves. Instead of the dinner buffet at the clubhouse, guests can arrange for a private dinner setup for an additional fee. Other options include a private dinner by the pool or at an exclusive private island a few minutes away.
The best thing about our private dinner was that we got for FREE because I had an Ayala Rewards Circle (ARC) card. El Nido Resorts is an Ayala company so one of the perks of the ARC card was a free upgrade to a higher type room. Since the resort was fully booked, they opted to give us a free private dinner instead.
This was honestly one of the most romantic and picture-perfect experiences we have had. Imagine having dinner with this spectacular view as your backdrop. Our dinner menu consisted of appetizers, soup, and a main course plus desserts. We also ordered some additional drinks to complement our meal.
It was such a memorable way to spend our last evening in Lagen Island. The next morning, we spent our free time frolicking at the resort before our boat transfer back to Lio Estate for our AirSwift flight back to Manila. El Nido Resorts is definitely one of the best and most romantic places you can visit in the Philippines. We’ve already finished Apulit Island and Lagen Island, so there’s still Miniloc Island and Pangulasian Island left to explore next.

Sailing Nova Scotia: Jagged coastline makes for a unique cruising experience
Nova Scotia’s intricate coastline has wilderness, history and civilisation in abundance. Tom Zydler explores it

As soon as the sun began to disperse the fog that had settled at night over Pubnico Harbour we weighed anchor. Cape Sable was about 15 miles away and the wind, light and contrary, made it slow going.
Three hours later a sheen in the veil of wet haze changed into a low, sandy shore. My wife, Nancy, spotted the first buoy, a red dot bobbing in and out of sight among the waves. We noticed the current was still running with us to the east. The visibility wasn’t too bad. We now motored less than a third of a mile from land.
To starboard, swells grew higher and higher on scattered shoals only 150m away. On the shallowest spots of Horse Race, a wall of swelling sea thundered and collapsed before reaching our channel. Soon a tall lighthouse came into sight and then vanished behind as our Mason 44, Frances B, popped out into much smoother waters.

This inshore shortcut close by Cape Sable made rounding the southernmost tip of Nova Scotia a fast and exciting jaunt. Earlier, from the west, we crossed the famed Bay of Fundy with its extreme tides to Brier Island – the boyhood home of Joshua Slocum, the first of the great single-handers. The red cedar shake boot shop of the Slocum family still overlooks the harbour.
Every summer currents filled with plankton and krill bring hundreds of whales to the overfalls off Brier Island, yet in June 2017 we failed to spot any. It was an unusual year when most of the right whales in search of food moved instead into the Gulf of St Lawrence.
South of the tiny, remote Brier Island and over on the mainland of Nova Scotia lies the port of Yarmouth. Entirely protected from winter gales it was once a major centre of shipping and shipbuilders. Today the wharves built near and over the old launching ways serve countless fishing vessels of all types. Up the harbour and downtown yachts pick up moorings or tie up at a small marina.

It didn’t take long to get a sample of Bay of Fundy currents. Fog, thick enough to chop with a hatchet, took a long time to lift over Yarmouth Harbour. As it thinned we left, a few hours too late to carry a fair current all the way. Schooner Passage through Tusket Islands offers a shortcut safe from tidal overfalls and open ocean swells but the currents, in half flood, had already turned contrary when Frances B pointed her nose between ghostly islets in the thickening fog.
We revved the engine to speed up. Instead of the usual six plus knots the GPS registered about a knot and half. At least in the lee of the island the sea flattened, broken only by eddies and swirls of tide. Finally, out of the Passage, the wider waters diluted the fierce stream. The course change towards Pubnico, our staging anchorage for rounding Cape Sable, brought clearing afternoon airs and fair current.
East of Cape Sable tides diminish, the seas calm down. Ahead stretch 250 miles of Nova Scotia, its coast shredded into inlets, sounds, bays and coves, all easily accessible in day trips. A long inlet a few hours from Cape Sable hides Shelburne. Every boat sailing Nova Scotia will sooner or later show up here to refit, relax and socialise.

At the yacht club docks we spotted the bluewater ketch Kantala. Michael and Sheila Donnan built her in British Columbia more than 20 years ago before setting off to make ‘a Guinness World Record for the slowest circumnavigation’.
The 20m schooner Wolfhound was quite a sight too. Artist Steven Dews and his wife, Louise, have allowed for about ten years of cruising to reach their home base in New Zealand. Steven is a maritime artist famous for spectacular canvasses of sailing ships and classic yachts.
The waterfront near the yacht club shows preserved evidence of maritime history. The cooper shop dates back to the 19th Century, and the schooners bound for offshore banks once stopped in Shelburne to buy boats made in the Dory Shop – its doors are still open.
Among Canadian yachtsmen, starved of sandy, sunny beaches, Port Mouton counts as an irresistible summer destination. On this coast, summer morning south-westerly airs may, by the late afternoon, due to hot air rising over the land, muscle up to a really strong breeze. After midday we had already reefed the main and rolled some of the genoa.
Gybing into Western Channel brought the rising chop right astern, the wind 20 knots. Steering by hand we raced by the buoys, rolled up the genoa and screamed within spitting distance of a red beacon. A long beach backed by high dunes opened up to view, and the forest at the background cut the wind to a breeze while the anchor splashed into Caribbean blue water. The setting sun threw long shadows on the sand.
Port Mouton isn’t all about lolling in the sun. Out of sight behind a massive breakwater hums a busy fishing fleet. After the collapse of cod stocks Canada introduced very strict conservation policies; an open season for some species may last only few days. One autumn evening we counted 57 longliners leaving port at high speed.
Bluenose II, the pride of Nova Scotia, sails off Lunenburg harbour
Of all the port towns with maritime heritage, Lunenburg is the most irresistible. As we reached from the outer waters into Lunenburg Bay a hilly skyline of steeples rose ahead. The waterfront resembled a 19th Century etching complete with masts of schooners and square riggers.
With luck you can tie up at the exquisite Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic next to the Bluenose II, a schooner that beat the best of the American competition from Gloucester. Beloved by Canadians, Bluenose II often ventures out – a thrilling sight in the bay. The town has managed to hold back developers’ bulldozers and lovingly maintained timber architecture lines the streets. No wonder Lunenburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Labrador Current from the Arctic bathes the coast of Nova Scotia, but the Gulf Stream flows north a bit farther offshore, its warmth serving as a hurricane path. Now and then an odd tropical storm pummels the coast. Come September it pays to listen to the weather coming from the East Coast of the US.
Fortunately, Lunenburg is surrounded by a choice of escape anchorages. Twice we sought refuge in La Have River just around the corner to the south-west.
To the north-east opens Mahone Bay. A vast body of water, scores of Islands, bays, yacht clubs, marinas and boatyards add to the busy summer sailing scene. In search of tranquility we sailed into Deep Cove, a cleft on the Bay’s high, cliffy east shore. A narrow channel, precipitous on one side and densely forested on the other, culminated in a pond. A necklace of moorings for local yachts kindly left the middle for visitors to anchor.
Halifax, with a population of 400,000 plus, naturally offers everything your yachting heart may desire plus a culturally thriving city. The great peninsula in the western approaches, a 20-mile stretch punctured by eight inlets that themselves branch into side arms, is the local yachtsmen’s fabled playground.
Considering the numbers of boats in Halifax we made sure to sample these coves on weekdays. Entering Prospect Bay and heading into Rogue’s Roost was a bit hairy since the high tide covered even the tips of the kelp fronds, an early warning of the rocks under. As novices in this maze of rocks and islets we motored gingerly in.
The chart promised a tight, deep pool to starboard, good enough for one boat of our size in this wonderfully wild place, despite Halifax throbbing around the corner. On Friday afternoon yachts began flocking in but by then we were secure in our bowl among hills.
East of Halifax is the least populated part of maritime Nova Scotia. Rising ocean levels changed deep gorges sculpted by receding ice millennia ago into long forested bays which in turn fork into enticing arms. Miniature archipelagoes of islands and islets, the passages between them open to careful navigators, dot the coast.
Molly’s Cove on Shelter Island, part of Pope’s Harbour, is particularly memorable for its clear, blue waters, the forests reflecting in the mirror calm sea.
Aquaculture certainly is making its mark in many coves protected from ocean swells. However, there is always room to anchor or pass by. We swung into the well-marked channel into Whitehead Harbour, our mind on anchoring in Yankee Cove. As is often in these waters a large reef of rocks positioned itself smack in the middle.

A bit of careful slaloming led in when a large installation of mostly submerged cages hove in sight leaving free space to anchor in a nicely protected indent in the shore.
The prevalent ocean swells on this coast come from south-east, a feature to remember when choosing an anchorage. Most of the prominent bays are cut into the mainland towards north-west. The exception is Liscomb Harbour, a four-mile long east-to-west slot. Three islands off the entrance effectively bar the ocean swells from intruding. As in other harbours of the Eastern Shore, less than a handful of houses stood among trees on the shore.
At the west end of the run rises Liscomb Lodge, large, but tastefully hidden on the cliff top. A floating dock, good for about one 15m boat, was taken but we found shelter in a narrow passage. Somewhere outside howled a strong gale yet only rare puffs moved the tree tops as we lounged near the bar to tunes delivered by two mature musicians.
When time comes to turn back to the south and home you become painfully aware of the prevalent south-west winds. Trying to wait this out till the next wind change led to other discoveries of secluded spots. One year coming back from a summer trip to Greenland, Labrador and Newfoundland we reached Canso.
Overlooking the easternmost peninsula of Nova Scotia the village was once thronged with fisher folk, mostly Basque, loading on cod. Centuries of vanishing fish stocks changed the town into a backwater, and the fisheries are now limited to lobster trapping in a short open season.

We spent some time in Glasgow Harbour on the south side of Canso Peninsula, entertained by noisy seals that hauled out on a rocky reef nearby. With the dinghy roped to the end of a park boardwalk, we landed by a meadow filled with pitcher plants thriving on a mosquito diet and an easy trail continued to Canso town.
Once the south-west wind dropped to 15 knots we followed the buoys of Andrew Passage, a mere ribbon of deeper water winding through rocks towards the open coast. Beating southward in these moderate conditions should have been no problem.
But out there, away from the lee of the islands, the seas were stirred up wild. Short, steep, vicious. The bow would dig in and then had no time to rise before the next wave rolled right over it. Steering off wind to gain more speed didn’t help – on top of the underlying south-eastern swell the fresh wind created waves from south and south-west, seemingly from all over, and they were winning.
In three unpleasant hours we made about 7 miles. Abeam opened a gap in the coast with Port Howe at the end. An S-shaped course led in; serious breakers boiled white over shoals. The bay was uninhabited: one mildewed house was leaning ready to topple, its windows gaping hollow.
Behind a spur of rocks, out of sight, stood a wooden cabin, probably only rarely used. Above our boat at anchor, on a giant basket of twigs, an osprey peeped at high pitch. Its mate wheeled down from the clouds and joined – there must have been chicks in the nest.
Dinghy cruising through the north-east arm of the bay, to the rapids of a tawny stream, we tracked a weasel foraging in and out of water. Nancy joined him, looking for mussels and periwinkles between seaweeds. A massive bald eagle followed our progress, flitting between treetops.
Nova Scotia is a quite unique cruising ground combining access to urban locations with easy escapes to wilderness and nature. Its jagged coastline could make a lifetime of cruising.
