timothywhite: Conan O’Brien, Manhattan NY, 2003. Conan and I met in midtown Manhattan at his office to start our photo shoot. I brought him down to the street and we ran all over the neighborhood. I’m shooting him on 42nd Street, in restaurants, in lobbies of random buildings—we just ran around manhattan—he was really up for anything. He’s so tall—I mean like 8 foot 3. He’s like gigantic. We were passing the subway entrance, and I just ran down a few steps. I normally wouldn’t do this, but this is somebody I could shoot up at, and just elongate even more, and do this whole wide and low angle thing. So I shot him from below with the vortex of Manhattan skyscrapers coming up behind him. I normally wouldn’t do that with anybody, but there was something funny about making this big character even bigger. It made total sense with him. Shooting with Conan was one of my real guerrilla photography around New York kind of shoots. Like a boxer—sticking and moving—grab one here, grab one there. And I’m already on the subway step. So I was like, come on, let’s go down the subway. So we went down at the 42nd Street station, and he jumped on a car and stuck his head out the door—just before the train took off. It was fun—running around the city and through the subway with this big star—just kind of winging it. People recognized him, of course, but he didn’t care…and neither did I. It was my kind of shoot.

Timothy White (the late fmr. editor-in-chief of Billboard) and George Harrison; photo courtesy of Billboard (possibly photographed by Chris Cuffaro).
“[George] was a man of wit, candor, and disarming directness. His art of living, of creating, and of dying were all of a piece. […] The essence of George Harrison’s affecting, often wryly confrontational art was its ability to make real feelings into believable songs with sincere and even unabashed messages, while maintaining a sense of humor, subtlety, and balance about the matter — before, during, and afterward. […] Harrison was gregarious and a good listener. He loved talking about books, recent films, British and Indian history, and the annals of the recording industry — whether it was about early English vaudeville, Cab Calloway and Hoagy Carmichael, the transition from big bands to bebop, corny and Western music at its most rustic or instrumentally skilled, or the evolution of recording techniques. […] In his music, in his epic passage from ‘Don’t Bother Me’ to ‘Horse to the Water,’ George Harrison conveyed his distress, confessed his vulnerabilities, and expressed his longing — as did the ancient Vedic poets — for the nearness of God. Through his recordings, he prayed for the human race. […] Last Christmas, George Harrison said that after his recording/reissue work in 2001 was done, he wanted very much ‘to go to someplace sunny, someplace warm.’ Hopefully, that place will be in our hearts.” - Timothy White (fmr. editor-in-chief of Billboard), Billboard, December 15, 2001
