"Every spring, we celebrate Gearvalanche Day. What’s a #gearvalanche, you ask? Well, it’s the gigantic stuff-vomit that occurs when you take all your belongings out of your house. - On that day, which actually isn’t really celebrated, but rather dreaded by JR and I both, we drive out onto a piece of remote land, spread our stuff out on the ground, and reevaluate each item we own, asking if any one of JR’s 4 shirts, or any one of my drawer-full of books still belongs in here, if each spoon and fork and plate is worth carrying every day, 365 days a year. - Because we travel with everything we own (and I mean that literally. All of our belongings are in here with us), we are incredibly choosy about what we let stay. And (this is where things get complicated) JR and I are also extremely opinionated about which items are appropriate to own. AND—you guessed it—we often don’t agree about what makes the cut. You bet there was a fair amount of arguing this year on Gearvalanche Day. After rounds of negotiation, some pitiful pleading, and more tears than I’d like to admit, I wound up a few books lighter, Sunshine lost 20 pounds of random stuff and—surprise surprise—JR still owns a total of 4 shirts. When we told people we were going to be moving into an RV full time, we heard one resounding question in return- “Why?” ⁣ It wasn’t always negative, people just didn’t understand why we would give up our old lives. We had good jobs, lived in a pretty decent house in the Bay Area. We were doing everything 20-something’s were supposed to do. ⁣ People wondered why we would give up that comfort, for the stress of the unknown that we were sure to find on the open road. ⁣ I get it. If you’d told us 2 years ago that we’d be here today, we never would have believed it. But at some point last year, a restlessness grew inside us. A need to do more than just exist. A need to see the stars without the smog. Thank you for traveling from near and far for our first-ever New Orleans Vanlife Gathering! What an incredible team we have and we feel so loved! It was such an honor to have Grayhawk Perkins, Native American Choctaw of the Muscogee Nation, opening up the gathering with acknowledgment of the traditional Native inhabitants of the land. I often have times where I miss the more conventional approach where your house is buried in the ground but I also love this adventure, right now. I like that it comes with being intentional about every part of life. I tend to think a lot about who I am becoming... if I’m the type of neighbor I’d like to be to the world. I guess I like van life a little bit because you get a lot of neighbors. It’s easier to be intentional out here and you get to know people pretty well even over just a couple campfires. Best of all, you get to learn what type of neighbor you’d like to be by having a lot of good ones." Life is weird and so are the people in it, but when it comes down to it, we choose the lives we live. This is my life, in all its grandiose absurdity. This old Bandit camper, husky that gives no fucks & learning about life & myself by staring off into & photographing the beauty that I have chosen to surround myself with everyday, are all pieces of this life I've built for myself. Part of that life is lived mostly in solitude, which affords me the time to think & write, but rarely do I get to share my thoughts with others, with friends. Sharing my semi-crazy thoughts, writing & telling stories via instagram has been life altering in itself. It continues to inspire me to push forward when I get tired, lonely & unmotivated, from life on the road, and this app consistently brings beautiful humans into my life. For these reasons and for all of you that read my posts (with or without photos of my butt) I am #grateful. This is an appreciation post for @micahpulleyn who is the face behind @ashevillevanlife. The 5th annual rally is coming up September 20-22 and we’re excited to support her with this event! Here’s a little glimpse into a day in her life: “Most days, I’m trying to keep a sense of balance: cranking out work from my home office, rocking event and film projection projects, navigating solo parenting, remembering to feed the pets, getting out for a trail run or ride, spending time with my people, and taking care of myself. I operate pretty much as a one-woman show, and sometimes I get hella overwhelmed with the “muchness” of life. I lose sleep, I break down, I freak out. And, when I do, I am often reminded that my people have my back. They show up in support and solidarity, without judgment or agenda. My feeling of “I have to do it all on my own” is softened by the reality that, together everything is possible. Or, at least the reality that I’m not alone on this journey.” We love you Micah and can’t wait to see all you have in store for Asheville this year.
