Harry Potter Rec Fest Day 28 - Underrated

I'm not sure exactly what my definition of "underrated" ought to be for this @hprecfest prompt, but I went with "doesn't get recommended in the circles I run in as often as I think it should".

This fic is so funny and the podfic is stellar. JocundaSykes' comedic timing is superb. I think the premise is pretty clear - Severus saves Harry's life over and over, but he's soooo mad about it! Check the author's tags, but I promise it's a happy ending.

The Roommate by @romaine2424 Pairing: Draco x Harry Word count: 42,729 Rating: M

This was one of my favorite fics from @hd-erised last year. Cottage vibes, awkward roommate interactions, Draco learns to cook (this might be my favorite trope ever???), and both boys working through some stuff in a painful but ultimately rewarding way. They're just so sweet to one another and the side characters are used really well.

Getting to Know You Tag Game

Three Ships: I imprinted on Dramione in 2021 and that was it for me. But I also adore a NottPott and a Panville. You could probably sell me on any ship.

First Ship: Before I knew what fanfic was I kept a spiral bound notebook under my bed that I filled with Cassie/Jake from Animorphs. But also Tobias has my heart forever.

Last Song: Ok but 99% of what I’ve been listening to right now is Brown Noise, despite that the words “brown noise” next to each other in that order are heinous. The most recent thing on my Spotify history is “Stirring Brown Noise” by Loud Lowness. Great track. Highly recommend.

Last Movie: RWRB and I loved it!

Currently Watching: New season of Lower Decks. I wish Mariner would adopt me to be her bestie 🥺

Currently Reading: Supposedly I’m reading RWRB, but I’m currently working on a big, all-consuming work thing and holding RWRB hostage as my reward.

Last Thing I Wrote: In June I wrote a Dramione one-shot (with beautiful art by @tinyq and podfic by @etl-echo-audiobooks) about a lab accident that’s going to destroy all magical life in Britain, and Hermione has to stop it except she’s lost her memories. There’s a lot of popsicle stick-esque dentist jokes that I’m proud to say I made up myself.

Currently Writing: The big, all-consuming work thing that necessitates me listening to such heat rocks as “Mother Nature Sings the Brown Noise” by Breez Bing.

guys. drinny is such a banger ship.

i’ve tried reading other hp pairings over the last couple days since i finished a few drinny fics, and i mean it when i say that none of them have hit like drinny do. i can’t even explain it, but they just make so much sense. like, you don’t have to change ginny or draco’s characters much to make them work (unlike a lot of popular non-canon hp ships), they just do. the fire/ice dynamic is electric, the banter doesn’t feel forced, and the fan content is consistently high-quality. oh and amazing drinny ff authors are still writing fics and holding events for us readers to enjoy.

Somewhere Down the Line - 153k, 36 chapters

This story will always be the one closest to my heart. I wrote it over the course of two years and learned so much about writing (and myself) in the process. Not to mention that it’s also the first story that I had @lightofevolution as my beta! After working on it for so long, it felt like such a major accomplishment to hit “post” that final time 😊 (Yes, champagne was involved.) My heart still gets so happy whenever I see people read it because I really can’t imagine ever loving a fic more than I do this one.

Ahh, my accidental multi-chapter of the year 🙈 This story was intended to be a one shot, but I loved it too much that I never wanted to stop writing it. Single Dad Draco has always been one of my favorite tropes, and after four years writing in the fandom (which like, how has it already been four years??), it was about time I finally wrote a story that fell in that category! Plus, it felt good to finally cross off “You’ve Got Mail” AU from my plunny list after it sat there waiting for far too long. 

Blind Affairs of the Heart - 5k, one-shot

After binging Love is Blind during early quarantine, I was all too eager to write a Dramione story with a similar concept. (Sans the getting married part. I wasn’t going to make them go *that* far.) I’m not a very smutty writer, but I went for it with that fic, making it my first rated E fic in around two years. It was also really cool when @finepairingspodcast reached out to do an episode on this fic 🥰Though hearing someone else read your smut out loud can be a very interesting experience lol

one, two. - 9k, 4 chapters

This was another story that had been sitting in my plunny file for around a year and a half, which I actually started writing the original outline for while begrudgingly on my way to a first date 🙈(Fun fact: That failed first date dude gets a shoutout as one of the bad dates Hermione complains about in this fic 😉) I put a lot of story ideas on hold while life got hectic and I channeled my writing efforts on finishing Somewhere Down the Line, so I was really happy when one, two. was the first story I wrote as soon as SDTL was complete.

The Heart of Healing - 5k, one-shot

Oh, you mean another story crossed off my plunny list that was over a year old? (I’m sensing a major trend in the stories I wrote the second half of 2020.) Usually, when writing a story, I tend to hone in on a few specific moments and write in detail, but with The Heart of Healing, I took more of the vignette approach to span several months in the course of a one shot. It was a bit of a challenge at the start because my mind likes to fill in all those gaps, so I was really proud of how the end result turned out. (And a major shoutout to @mightbewriting who beta-kicked my butt on this one!)

Maintenance Officer. OR: Hermione Granger accidentally invents a magical bomb and has six hours to learn how to defuse it. Unfortunately, she's lost her memories. Double unfortunately, Draco Malfoy, the one person who can help her, is covered in blood and holding a knife to her throat.
