Sometimes the most unexpected surprises happen when you step out of the box. I was afraid to mix pink and green. It surely would make mud. Taking a few moments today to work on this cool packing paper that was wrapped around a recent purchase. It was a great color and had this interesting surface. I grabbed a few of my favorite stencils and painted. Making time to make. That’s exactly what I needed. ⁣ A favorite way I like add final details is to ink the edges of the stenciled images. I can’t stop mixing color. ⁣ Today it’s blues & greens and pinks & oranges. There is pure wonder in all the magic that happens when you just keep mixing. ⁣ Also the late hot high sun shining in the window near my table really cast these colors in their best light. I am feeling all the love for these moody colors right now. ⁣ I’ve been trying to figure out the source of the interest on my end. Some days take you by surprise. ⁣ The kind of days where you hit the ground running and somehow magically find a way to slow time and tick a dozen things off your to-do list. The kind of day that you meet head on knowing full well art isn’t in the picture. But then, then you surprise yourself. ⁣ You work hard and push the bounds of what you can do and what you should do. And when the day is almost done, the sunlight fading, you find a few moments to paint. It might be just be filling the spaces of your work under paper with watercolor, but it’s paint on a brush onto paper. And that’s good enough for me. As you know I coteach at popupartclasses.com and we have embarked on an exciting new adventure! ⁣ First, I am so thrilled to finally be able to share some thing @sandikeene and I have been keeping secret for a while now. If I can’t paint let me sift through what I have painted and let the inspiration build for next time. This is one way to stay feeling creative as a maker. Life happens. There are times when we have to put aside our making days and focus on those things that come first and make us mothers, wives, caregivers and all the other important hats we wear as women. But instead of chalking up the day to a loss in the studio I choose to spend a few moments “with art.” Not making it, just enjoying it. Leafing through old journals, flipping through favorite catalog or book, revisiting a special piece an art friend sent through the mail. All of these are ways that help me feel connected to art even on the days I can not paint. Like this beautiful stack of color. I’m using all the stencils in all the ways here. Painting through circles to create florals, using leaf stencils as inspiration for blind painting and choosing colors based on the residual paint left on them all. Structured and beautiful. ⁣ I am not one for creating inside the lines and I rarely adhere to the rules when it comes to art. Painting is an outlet where I can express my love of the less than perfect undefined bounds of things, but... ⁣ ... but then these stencils happened. I am so excited to discover that I can create within the lines and enjoy the process. I can paint a beautiful structured piece and love it. ⁣ I think it’s so important to be open to change in art. It doesn’t mean we have to change how we do everything, or even all the time. But to experiment with new techniques and to explore new ways of doing things can open our eyes.
