I definitely didn't have Athelstan becoming a religious tyrant to atone for his unbridled queerness on my 2023 bingo card, nor my TLK bingo card (I haven't read the books, nor the history, sue me) but I'm here for it.

Harry Gilby played those shame filled puppy dog eyes so well too. there wasn't a moment I wasn't feeling at least an ounce of his shame, pain, and love. I felt like a boy in love, my stomach tied in knots, weighed down by the weight of God, the pain of my sins, the shame in my heart. I felt the ache of knowing I was doing the wrong thing but being so painfully desperate to right things, to atone for my sins, that I did them anyway, being smothered in blood, shame, and fear. I felt vulnerable and manipulated, like the whole world was watching me, plotting my doom, waiting to throw me into hell, but at the same time, horrifically alone with only one man at my side, a man that I would have to learn was using me all along, that he made me feel the ways I had just so he could use me. in short, put harry gilby in more films, he is quite literally perfect, he's beautiful and talented and makes me teary eyed (this honestly goes for most the cast tbh).

Seven Kings Must Die was so good. The acting, writing and fight scenes was chef’s kiss. I really loved the scenes between Uhtred and Athelstan were my favorite, especially the final talk between them.

Uhtred never gave up on Athelstan despite all he had done which was so true to Uhtred's characterisation throughout the series. He always saw the good in the people he loved no matter what they had done. Something that was both a weakness and strength of his.

That final talk between Uhtred and Athelstan was so special. The hidden meaning behind it, Athelstan's gratitude... the fact that Uhtred's final action was keeping his word, ensuring a peaceful succession and, making sure that Athelstan wouldn't be forced into something he didn't want was just *chefs kiss*.

God, I am going to miss this franchise so much.
