my theory is that needles falls under the fear of intimacy. the fear of opening up to someone just for them to hurt you. the fear that your spouse, the person you've spent a dozen loving years with, will murder you in your sleep. the fear that you'll be hurt and abused and maybe killed. the fear that being emotionally, physically, or sexually intimate will lead to your doom.
