Confession #41
"I headcanon that Reading Rainbow exists within the Star Trek universe and that host LeVar Burton is Geordi's ancestor. "You don't have to take my word for it!""

Star Trek Next Gen asks the important questions like:
Would lesbians survive in space?
And
Would you love me if I was a worm (inside of your colleague William Riker)?

I love Beverly and Deanna’s friendship. They are so supportive even when Beverly’s like oh no my boyfriend turned out to be a worm and he’s in your boyfriend now and Deanna’s just like yeah you should fuck him

I currently cant draw and won't be able to for a while so in the meantime please take this gal I was brainstorming over the other day. she is, in case you couldnt tell, the result of all the thinking I was doing about non-Trill hosts to symbionts
details under the cut-
in case the text isnt very legible, it reads-
Lieutenant Ethyr Bel
Andorian (joined w/ symbiont)
She/Her
Security Officer (Enterprise-D)
First Lieutenant
Ethyr was perfectly content living a completely average life. she was never the most ambitious person, perfectly happy with just being noticed, given the occasional praise from bridge crew, that sort of thing. she made friends easily- her best friend was Vozra Bel, the two met at the academy and were joined at the hip, practically inseparable
then the crash happened. a routine mission went wrong, and Ethyr and Vozra were involved in a massive shuttle crash. both were injured, but Vozra was critical- she wasn't going to make it. but the symbiont inside her could, if it could be put into a host quick enough. Bel would never survive the long trip to the Trill homeworld. so... Ethyr volunteered. begged to have the symbiont put in her. she didnt care that it had never been done on record, that it might not even work, she had to try. even if all she did was buy the symbiont enough time to get to Trill, that would be enough
well... it worked. it was highly experimental, it was desperate, and it worked. Bel took to Ethyr. suddenly, Ethyr had entire lifetimes flooding into her head. suddenly, she could feel Bel inside of her, shifting and squirming around her guts. suddenly, Ethyr- unambitious, perfectly content Ethyr- was someone, and something, entirely new
calling it a difficult adjustment is an understatement. Ethyr easily takes Bel as her last name, but thats about the only easy thing there is about this. for months shes nauseous, debilitated by constant aches and pains as Bel moves around her body and gets used to it. the memories are overwhelming, they give her chronic headaches, sometimes getting as bad as migraines that keep her in bed for days. the brain fog is terrible. every morning she has to remember who she is. sometimes she forgets, and introduces herself with the wrong name, or doesnt answer to her own. sometimes she forgets shes Andorian. everything is a lot, all the time, and she does her best to manage it all. she doesnt regret her choice, and she'd do it again in a heartbeat, but still. its a lot
theres some silver linings, of course. one day she will adjust fully. until then, she has a newfound sense of connection because of her symbiont. she has these lives shes connected to, her past lives, who are there for her every step of the way. she has Vozra again, in her heart, in her memories, in her soul. she enjoys some of these new developments since becoming joined with Bel- she likes that she can play some instruments, now. that she enjoys spicy food. that she knows Vulcan martial arts, and is good at it. sure, its a lot, and its often overwhelming and debilitating, but there are still things to love. on the days where she can, shes always trying to find more things to love
anyways yes this is Ethyr and ive only had her for a few days but I love her dearly

Season 4 Episode 23 The Host
Beverly Crusher is having a hot and steamy romance with the onboard ambassador Odan. He is settling a conflict between a people on an Alpha moon and the planet that they came from. The romance and negotiations are set to proceed when the shuttle with Odan and Riker is attacked by individuals from the moon. Wounded during the crash, Odan is operated upon only for it to be revealed that Odan themself are a parasite within the host called a Trill. Their host is terminally injured though the parasite is spared, it becomes evident Odan will need a host till their people can send another Trill host. Riker volunteers his own body to see that the negotiations can be completed.
In the new body he is able to gradually convince both factions that he is in fact Odan yet on the front of Beverly things are not going quite as well. Beverly feels betrayed and confused, not receiving the full story from Odan. She is hesitant to re-engage in romance but his passion, their connection and encouragement from Troi see a rekindling in the relationship. Yet just as the negotiations are successful, Riker collapses as a human body is not the best host for the parasite. Odan is put in stasis until the new female bodied Trill gets here and they are put inside. They approach Beverly one last time professing their love. She informs them she cannot handle the changes and inconsistencies but she does love Odan back.
I was surprised to see how this episode took on the matter of appearance in romance. As Beverly has to confront Odan makes one realize that romance and intimate connection are not simply about appearance. When talking to Troi she brings up that she thought she liked his eyes and how he looked but that she is all confused now that he is in the body of Riker. It even became queer in that the Troll sent a female body for Odan next as gender is not important to the parasites. The parasites transcend notions of gender as well as what attraction to a body is. As someone who identifies with the type of attraction where it is about who the person is and getting to know them over a more aesthetic attraction I appreciated the use of Odan and his people.

TNG's "The Host" sets an interesting precedent for trills that later gets lovingly debunked by ds9, which is I guess what happens when you go from Alien of the Week to beloved main character the magnificent Jadzia Dax. I love what ds9 did with them but what I adore above all else is that in both shows they're used to explore lesbianism, truly the greatest honor any made up alien species can have

Brad Dourif Vs. LeVar Burton
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda
Brad Dourif - (Deadwood (season 1), Star Trek: Voyager, Wild Palms) - fantastic character actor and notorious scene-stealer who's consistently the most memorable part of anything he appears in. if you need a scrungly hot intense weirdo for something, this is your #1 go-to guy. he was a main character on deadwood as the cantankerous yet lovable doc cochran, had recurring parts of substance on star trek: voyager, wild palms, and ponderosa, and a memorable guest star of many other shows, from murder she wrote to babylon 5, as well as acting in many tv movies. he’s played like a million priests for some reason (mainly evil or conflicted ones including at least one vampire priest), if you're into that. anyway you really gotta see this guy in action for the full effect, because his true je ne sais quoi lies in the way he delivers lines, gesticulates, and moves.
LeVar Burton - (Star Trek: The Next Generation, Roots) - as well as his wonderful performance as geordi laforge in next generation, levar burton had his breakout role starring as kunta kinte in the 1977 miniseries roots which set records for television viewership (its finale was estimated to have been watched by 130 million+ viewers, more than half the U.S. population at the time). he also directed numerous episodes of tng, ds9 (including the one where rom unionizes quark's), voyager and enterprise, and promoted literacy with his beloved pbs show reading rainbow, which he hosted for 23 years!
