Recent viral images of Southwest agents getting yelled at and crying have resurfaced a valuable lesson about the nature of our economic system that’s worth examining this holiday season: the deliberate, built-in ways corporate “customer service” is set up to not only shield those on the top of the ladder—executives, vice presidents, large shareholders—but pit low-wage workers against each other in an inherently antagonistic relationship marked by powerlessness and frustration. It’s a dynamic we discussed in “Episode 118: The Snitch Economy—How Rating Apps and Tipping Pit Working People Against Each Other,” of the Citations Needed podcast I co-host, but I feel ought to be expanded on in light of recent events. Watching video after video, reading tweet after tweet, describing frustrated stranded holiday travelers yelling at Southwest Airlines workers, and hearing, in turn, accounts of airline workers and airport staff breaking down crying, is a good opportunity to talk about how none of this is natural or inevitable. It is a choice, both in corporate policy and government regulation.
There are three main ways capital pits workers against each other in the relationship we call “customer service”:
1. Snitch economy. As discussed in Citations Needed Ep. 118, we are provided with more and more apps, websites, and customer surveys to effectively do the job of managing for management—free of charge, of course. Under the auspices of “empowering” the consumer, we are told to spy on our low-wage servants and gauge the quality of their servitude with stars, tips, and reviews. Uber, DoorDash, Fiver, Grubhub—a new “gig economy” has emerged that not only misclassifies workers as freelancers to pay them less, but hands over the reins of management to the consumer directly. This necessarily increases the antagonism between working-class consumers and the workers they are snitching on.
2. Automation. Increasingly, even getting to the bottom rung employee to yell at is difficult. Under the thin pretense of Covid, increased labor power has exploded the use of automated technology that creates a frustrating maze to get a simple problem solved or task accomplished. Don’t go to the register, instead download the app and order. Scan the QR code, don’t wait on hold, go to our website and engage a series of automated prompts and maybe you can solve your problem. More and more consumers are being pushed away from humans onto automated systems we are told will “save us time,” but instead exist solely to save the corporation labor costs. So, by the time the average consumer does finally work their way to seeing a human, they are annoyed, frustrated, and angry at this faceless entity and more willing to take it out on someone making $13 an hour.
One recent visit to Houston’s George H.W. Bush airport portended our obnoxious “automated” future. To cut down on unionized airport labor, all the restaurants use QR codes and require you to order food and drinks for yourself. Per usual, it’s sold as an exciting new technology that’s somehow good for consumers, but really the basic technology is 30 years old. It’s just a screen—the same ones restaurants have had for decades. The only thing that’s changed is the social conditioning of having you do all your own ordering and menu navigation. The waiter hasn’t been replaced by an iPad, they’ve been replaced by you. Invariably, it’s clunky and annoying and reduces the union jobs that airport construction is said to provide to justify soliciting public dollars. The only winner is a faceless corporation with a Delaware LLC and its shareholders living in a few counties in Connecticut and Texas.
Automation not only annoys and adds labor burdens to the customer, there is also evidence that it is a significant contributor to income inequality. A November 2022 study published in the journal Econometrica looked at the significantly widening income gap between lesser and more educated workers over the past 40 years. It found that “automation accounts for more than half of that increase,” as summarized by MIT News. “This single one variable … explains 50 to 70 percent of the changes or variation between group inequality from 1980 to about 2016,” said MIT economist Daron Acemoglu, co-author of the study. Whether or not, under a different economic system, automation could be a force for good is a debate for another day. But what is clear is that, while both consumers and workers are harmed by this trend, there is a significant want of solidarity between them.
3. Deliberate understaffing. This is a major culprit in this week’s Southwest Airlines meltdown. In parallel with the increased use of forced automation, cost-cutting corporations, facing increased labor power, are gutting staffing to its bare bones and hoping their corporate competitors doing the same will lead to a shift in consumer’s willingness to put up with substandard service and conditions, and overall bullshit. “We apologize for the wait,” the automated phone prompt tells us. Of course a machine cannot be contrite, so the effect is both surreal and grating: You’re not fucking sorry, you don’t exist. You're a recording. But now, who am I yelling at?

1 Billion4Thriller and The Thriller 40 Challenge 2!
1Billion4Thriller
If you have been on Twitter or Instagram during Sept and October, y'all know it's that time of year again! It's time to celebrate Michael Jackson's epic accomplishments with the best-selling album of all time—Thriller! And I don't care what anyone says, Thriller is the official Halloween song!
Okay, so as you all know by now, and if ya don't, you will soon, lol! The MJ Fam is attempting to get Michael Jackson's amazing short film, Thriller, to 1 Billion views! So, Please stream the short film on YouTube as much as you can, but please watch other videos in between so you're not exhibiting bot behavior and for your views to count. However, to make things easier, you can also watch the following playlist on the flyer below! Just scan the QR code, and you are taken to the pre-made playlist!
Tumblr media
The Thriller Challenge 2 (Starts this Friday, October 20th, 2023)
Tumblr media
With the monumental success of Michael Jackson’s Album, “Thriller,” being the best-selling album of all time, the actual single, Thriller, has never reached #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart—and it’s by far that has changed! With the “Thriller Challenge 2,” MJ Fans the world over plan to get Michael Jackson’s single, Thriller, to #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart! We attempted this last year (albeit Thriller placed decently), but it didn't make it to #1, which is why we need more fans to participate! We can do this! So, please Stream and buy the single Thriller (only the song and not the album) as much as you can. Please only buy and stream the official album version of the song, which is on the original 1982 release of Thriller, Thriller 40, and Thriller 25—this is very important as all other versions do not count towards the Billboard for our goal!
While streaming Thriller, please do not loop the song—play 2 to 3 different songs by the J5, The Jackson’s, 3T, or other artists of your liking so that the streams are counted properly. And make sure the volume on your app is turned up. We understand listening to Thriller (though we love the song) a million times might be challenging; you can, therefore, turn your device volume down or mute it—but not on your app. Please keep the volume on the app itself turned up! This goes for when streaming on YouTube as well. For more tips on how to properly stream, please check out the following video:
youtube
P.S. Here is a pre-made #ThrillerChallenge playlist of mine that you can stream to make things easier! This is one of the playlists I created and used when I hosted one of last year's many streaming parties hosted by myself and many other wonderful DJs. (P.S. I still like—and am a Mystery DJ, but I like sharing with y'all here! Lol!) https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2HNr81pCxDGEcD4mUi7yeO?si=a81f5cd5ab184df5
Lastly, please participate in some of the Thriller Streaming Parties on the StationHead App if you can (there'll be many)! It's a great way to jam out to MJ, Janet, and the Jackson Families' music while chatting with fellow MJ Fam if you would like! However, You do not have to chat! Just come in and listen to the music. The reason why these streaming parties are so important is because for every listener a DJ has for the party, it counts as a stream for Thriller! So, say if a DJ has 100 listeners, then that's 100 streams for Thriller! It's that easy—and the guesswork has been taken out of creating a playlist. All ya gotta do is sit back and listen to the music. In order to hear the music and the DJs on StationHead, you must have a premium Spotify or Apple Music account! If you don't have one, please search the internet. There are always free trials floating around (just make sure they are legit). When the challenge is over, you can always cancel your membership if you no longer want the service.
For a complete listing of all the Thriller Streaming parties, please follow @AndJustice4Some on the X app (formerly known as Twitter.)
On Saturday, October 21st, from 7:00 p.m. to 11:55 p.m., I'll be hosting a Thriller Streaming party on the StationHead App! Please attend if you can! It's such an honor to get the chance to host a streaming party for the Thriller Challenge.
Tumblr media
Please note: The #1Billion4Thriller and #TheThrillerChallenge2 events are not created by me. I'm just doing my due diligence as an MJ Fam and as one of the DJs for the Thriller Challenge, helping to get the information out!
In closing, today, the artist Drake has officially tied Michael Jackson as the male solo artist with the most No. 1 songs in Billboard Hot 100 History. Now, I'm not here to diss Drake, but let us be for real: the music that's being made today is not classic like many of MJ's and other legendary artists hit records. When Michael was selling millions of albums, there was no streaming; people had to actually go to the store (and sometimes stand in long lines) to support their fave! And if you ask me, there should be some distinction between physical sales and today's streaming—these are two different eras—it's unfair to compare the two. Today, with streaming being a click away, social media influence, and such—it's easier for artists to break records. I could make this post longer, but I'll chill as I do have a lot to say about this—but I'll save that for another post. At this point, it's all laughable. It's a skewed numbers game, and artistry is no longer at the forefront. At the end of the day, Michael's music will continue to be played millions and millions of years from now because Michael poured his heart and soul into his art while battling so many things. That being said, I hope this provides some extra motivation for to stream Michael Jackson's Thriller. Let's make Michael #1!
Blessings,
Midnight💜🌛

THE DEVIL DOLL.
Tumblr media
Pairing: Hinata Shoyou & Reader
WC: 1.7k Triggers: Lobotomy / Platonic Yandere (?) Summary: You find a doll in the trash that you plan to sell. Horror!AU.
Tumblr media
He was meant to be a life-sized doll, but he seems small to you. His hair is a messy red, almost orange, standing up in all directions. As you remove him from the dumpster where you found him, you run your fingers through it. It’s a fine material, almost like real hair. He has a layer of some kind of artificial skin over what feels to be a more solid, heavy plastic frame. You wonder briefly why such an expensive looking doll- you’ve seen them in the stores, they’re the next big thing for people with enough money to use dollar bills as kindling for their fireplaces- why is such a thing in the garbage?
You give him a cursory check. He seems to be all in one piece, just dirty and scuffed from his time in the dumpster. There are a few cosmetic damages where smooth skin-you can’t think of anything else to call the material- has been torn or nibbled by pests and the sharp edges of other trash, but you have done repairs like this before. If you heat up the material, you’re fairly sure you can melt the edges together. There may be little ‘scars,’ but if you can get the guy up and running again, you’ll be able to sell him for enough money to get yourself back on track.
You get him home. To clean him off, you end up having to give him a strange sort of sponge bath in the tub. It’s the only place he’ll fit. You’re afraid to get him too wet, though. The dolls are supposed to have a sort of rudimentary AI system, and you doubt throwing him into a vat of rice will save him if he ends up getting water-logged.
Once he’s been cleaned, you place him on the floor in your room and gather your tools. For a lot of fashion type dolls, you can use a hair dryer to heat up the glue enough to remove the doll’s head. This one seems to not have a detachable head in the traditional sense; the neck and head connect together almost seamlessly. From the owner’s manual you downloaded by scanning the QR code on the heel of his foot, you are able to find the power switch, which is an almost imperceptible raised button just behind his left ear.
You press the button and hold it down until you hear the slightly rattling hum, like that of an old computer toward. Sitting back on your heels in front of him, you watch as his head lifts and his eyes slowly open, glowing a faint amber. He cocks his head to one side, regarding you curiously, and offers a smile. When he opens his mouth, a little air brushes your face, and you realize this must be where one of his venting systems is located. The manufacturers really thought of everything to make these dolls seem lifelike.
“Hello, my name is Hinata Shoyo.” He says, a little stutter and warble to his flat voice. It reminds you a little of the voice of one of those text readers people use to make videos on apps like TikTok. You are a little confused by the doll already having a name; the manual made it sound as if the first thing you would do when the doll was booted up for the first time was to give it a name. You suppose this doll already has a name because someone tried it out. Maybe it was a display model. Certainly someone hadn’t spent all that money just to throw it away after naming it.
You briefly scan the manual again and find a page concerning how to reset the doll. The doll’s wide, golden eyes follow your hand as you lift it toward his right ear, searching for the small button just inside the soft whorl. You find it, press it, and hold it down. The doll watches you closely, blinks, and repeats.
“Hello, my name is Hinata Shoyo.”
Strange, but you’ll worry about that later. Besides, even if he has already been programmed with a name, you still believe you can sell him for enough money to change your current circumstances. You smile at him and tell him your name. A thin band of light glows around the edge of his amber iris as he takes in your name and repeats it in that same, flat voice as before. You have a brief moment of panic, before reading in the manual that there can be multiple users with various profiles and preferences. You’ll just delete your profile once you do the necessary repairs and get him in working order again.
As you move about your room, gathering your tools, the doll Hinata watches you. It sits with its legs crossed and its hands resting in its lap. You’ll need to buy the doll new clothes-. The ones that it is wearing now, while freshly cleaned courtesy of your washer and dryer, are falling apart from being exposed to the trash and elements. You aren’t sure what base personality this model of the doll is supposed to have, that would have been something included with the specific box and literature of this particular doll, but you suppose you can ask it. If the doll’s AI is not sophisticated enough to answer basic questions about itself, you can look it up online and shake your head about the price of the doll compared with its actual capabilities. “What model are you?” Hinata straightens as if called to attention and rattles off a long string of letters and numbers. You shake your head quickly, there’s no way you’ll remember all of that. “No, I mean… what is your interest? Or hobby?” You’re scrolling madly through the owner’s manual, trying to find the right verbiage to get your desired response. “I like volleyball.” Hinata says with a bright smile. The expression on its face is almost human in its excitement- almost.
A sports model. You can hardly contain your own excitement. The ones that help with learning and practicing sports are the more expensive models, since they include sensors for heart rate levels, step counting, and other health and wellness based applications. Why was Hinata in the dumpster? The question keeps nagging at the back of your mind like an itch you can’t quite scratch, but you’re too excited and too deep in mentally creating the list of the bills you’ll pay and things you’ll treat yourself with when you sell the doll. “Hinata, can you run a vitals scan for me, please?” You ask, just as a test. The doll stands and moves to you. It reaches out its hands; one circles the bicep of your left arm and the other your right wrist. The hand clutching your left arm begins to tighten its grip, the tips of the doll’s fingers applying enough pressure to be uncomfortable, almost painful. You gasp and try to pull away, but Hinata holds firm. It’s only a few moments, but they are frightening ones. He releases you, and you stagger back. “Your blood pressure is slightly elevated, but vitals seem to be strong.” Hinata says matter-of-factly. He tilts his head and smiles. “Do you want to go for a run? Do some drills?” Of course. That’s why his grip was so tight; he was checking blood pressure. You take a moment to calm your breathing. Shaking your head, you offer him a small, nervous smile. “That’s okay. Tell me all about yourself while I start working on your repairs.” Hinata’s expression changes into something that looks very intense. Were his pupils always slitted like a cat? “I’m not broken.” His voice sounds strange. It's stuttering again, glitching.
“No, of course not! You just have a few cuts and you need new clothes.” You say quickly, gesturing to the tears in his skin and his obviously ruined clothes. Hinata looks down at himself and seems to notice his clothes for the first time. His eyes go back to normal, and you’re not sure if they had even changed before or if that was just a trick of the light. He sits down on the edge of your bed and the smile is back. The repairs don’t take long. Once you gather the necessary tools and materials and lots of coffee and energy drinks, you are able to finish over the course of a weekend. You managed to order a volleyball jersey off the internet and get it rush delivered. It fits him a little loosely, but it’ll be good enough. Whoever buys him can get him better clothes. The uniform is a black and orange polo sort of shirt and shorts. (Orange to match the bright color of his hair.) You take photos of him, making sure to take photos of the small areas where you repaired him, and upload them along with his description. You start the price on the lower end for his model, hoping that the bidding will get higher as the time passes. When you’re finished, you take a moment to let yourself feel excited and hopeful. You go to sleep with a smile on your face. There is still that nagging voice in the back of your mind. Why was he thrown away? You don’t notice his eyes glowing from the corner of your room. You wake up to a loud sound and find Hinata standing over your destroyed computer. Your eyes widen, but before you can draw the breath needed to scream, he is on top of you. He’s so fast, a blur of motion. He sits heavily on your stomach, and you can see a jagged piece of glass in his hand, most likely from the screen of your computer. He is staring at you with those wide, golden eyes and those slitted pupils you thought were just your imagination.
“You were going to sell me…” Somehow, his modulated voice sounds sad. You try to speak, but his free hand lashes out and catches your throat. His hand begins to squeeze, and suddenly you can’t breathe. “I thought we were friends.” You thrash beneath him, clawing at his hand, but he doesn’t budge. Darkness is starting to crowd your vision; your head is beginning to swim. He lowers the tip of the glass toward your eye. “I think we can still be friends, don’t you? I’ll make sure you’re unconscious while I make your repairs.” He’s smiling broadly, his eyes are so wide they look like twin, glowing suns. As you black out, you feel the tip of the glass shard pressing between your eye and its socket, digging deeper and deeper. “Friends forever.”

Hero of our times Russ from Retro Game Corps has done a fresh new video guide for hacking/CFWing your 3DS. The process has actually gotten way easier since I did my own CFW a couple of years ago.
(Actually watching this, this exploit is way more fun than the one I had to do. That new Luma menu, ooooooo.)
As Russ says, you should follow the written guide, but if you read it and go "wtf am I looking at" here is a guy who shows you very clearly step by step what you are going to be doing.
He doesn't get into it, but once you complete this whole process, you can use the FBI app to instantly install games by scanning QR codes with the 3DS over at HShop. Also the Themes you can get are amazing. I have a cool vaporwave theme with custom music. 8)

Candle’s whole exit interview but I wrote it while moving
You’re very welcome
Indigo: Welcome dear listeners my name is [idfk what they said] and I could not be more eager for today’s guest. No one carries a more powerful presence, she’s a voice in the wind that I long to capture even the slightest murmur of. In the darkest of times, she offers all the guiding light. Prepare yourself, mortals, for Inanimate Insanity’s own.. Candle!
Candle: Thank you for the hyper aesthetic introduction, Indigo. You truly set the scene in a manner that could not possibly be broken by any manner of interruption.
Indigo: Thanks? Hmm, that’s awfully specific.
Life Ring: Interrupting here! Ahem, to bring you this video’s surf-tastic sponsor, SurfShark VPN!
SurfShark is an app and browser extension that let’s you change your digital location, AKA your computer or phone, to another country! So you can access the internet as if you’re actually there! Ever want to access a website or watch a show that’s unavailable in your territory? Well, with SurfShark VPN, that’ll be no problemo for you! For example, hit shows like Friends, The Office and Twin Peaks aren’t available on Netflix in the United States. But with SurfShark VPN, simply switch your virtual location to the country the show is available in, and voilà! Now they’re totally viewable! SurfShark VPN will also encrypt your online data for that extra razzle dazzle of security when browsing. Waiting to catch that flight at the airport and using that free public Wi-Fi? Well, you wouldn’t want to get hacked, would you? Well, with SurfShark VPN, if anyone is trying to snoop on you online, they won’t be able to see what you’re doing or where you’re doing it all from! And you can use your account on an unlimited amount of devices! Whether it be your Meecintosh, Mephone or, you know, any other real world equivalent! Purchasing a 24 months VPN plan is seriously one of the best options you can find now, and SurfShark has a great offer! Three months extra! Just scan the QR code on the screen or click the link in the description, and use my Promo Code: ANIMATION with a 30-day money-back guarantee! Oo-wee! Alright, now back to the interview!
Candle: And there it is, the return to your carefully crafted atmosphere. Despite the pause, your enthusiasm is already healing the deep wound in my soul.
Indigo: I’m glad to hear it. So, Did you actually feel hurt by this elimination? Cause if-so, it seems like you must’ve held back emotions when you got voted out, even Mephone said you were oddly calm.
Candle: To be honest, I always had sensed my time was drawing near. In fact, I felt as though I was dodging the thralls of time ever since I avoided the elimination in Episode 11. Perhaps I have been running on borrowed time ever since. It was only a matter of time.
Indigo: Oh, so in that case, Do you feel it’s worth staying on Indefinite Island for another chance?
Candle: Oh yes, I will be staying on Indefinite Island. I still feel that I have a purpose here in the game.
Indigo: Fantastic, I’m sure there’s still lots you can do here on the island while you wait, like your aura stand. How do you read auras?
Candle: It’s definitely an art. To put it as simply as I can, I use my third eye chakra to see into the depths of an individual soul. An aura is emitted during this process and the rest flows out naturally. In a sense, it’s communicating with someone as they bear their soul.
Indigo: Ohh! Speaking of which, you’ve had so many great connections out in the game. Do you think you may have made it any farther is Silver Spoon wasn’t a contestant? Or do you think he was helpful in how far you got?
Candle: Who can say? The strings of fate are ever unwinding and intertwining in new ways. I guess it would have just depended upon what type of game I wish to play. I will say this; there was a time I was sure he’d move on like everyone else, but had not. It was.. fascinating.
Indigo: Absolutely. I just want to say that you played a great game! But what is your biggest regret?
Candle: Thank you so much. That really means the world. I suppose it may be how I dealt with Yin-Yang when moving away from the Thinkers or rather, lack thereof, meeting Yin and Yang was definitely a highlight of my journey and I’m so proud of their personal growth. On a separate thought, I wish I would have started to play for myself a little sooner. I was so enthralled with aiding in my teammates’ victories and personal growth, that I may have forgotten about myself for too long. I’ve learned that it’s okay to take time to take care of oneself as well. Healthy body, happy mind, healthy aura, happy life.
Indigo: This question came from a viewer in the middle of an emergency, which is why I saved it until now. Let’s just see here.. Candle? I forgot how to breathe.
Candle: Oh my! Quick, call Dr Fizz!
Indigo: Great idea, I’ll message this listener with your advice long after this interview.
Candle: Praise the Earth Mother
Indigo: Next question. Candle, do you think Silver has any chance of winning the game?
Candle: Yes indeed. He’ll have a one in six chance; who’d have thought?
Indigo: Not me, it’s a steep competition. Did you ever feel threatened by anyone in the game, both strategy-wise and challenge-wise?
Candle: Oh, absolutely! Nickel and Balloon’s baneful friendship made for a formidable alliance, even if Balloon may have been wearing some rose tinted glasses. I’d also say Clover, as her lucky abilities defy the laws of fate and nature altogether. Although, how is one truly to compete with that? She is sweet though.
Indigo: Very sweet indeed. What is your favourite thing to do in your free time?
Candle: This may surprise you, but I do enjoy playing tabletop RPGs. I love creating stories with my friends. My favourite class is warlock.
Indigo: Hm, feels fitting, well with you and your magical abilities. Why is it that when you had swapped bodies with Silver, he couldn’t fly when he put out your flame?
Candle: Oh, Indigo, one cannot learn to fly by pouring water onto oneself.
Indigo: Ahh, of course. Will you teach me how to fly?
Candle: Step one, remove water out of the equation.
Indigo: ..remove water.. also noted. But any insight in general into how your Inner-Flame works?
Candle: Well, ‘works’ implies a sense of ability. As though I’m tapping into some whimsical superpower. However, while the Inner-Flame shares my soul, it carries a mind of its own. That’s why when someone connects to it, they best be wary, lest it consume you. But we’re on pretty nice terms, so we’re fine.
Indigo: Oh.. wow. I’m not quite sure if the flying is quite worth a hassle. Nextly, why is it that you decide to split up Balloon and Nickel? They were fun!
Candle: You mean at the glacier challenge? Well, Silver and I had established ourselves as key players of the Loony-Balloony alliance, as the two who ensured their survival against the Thinkers, the next step was to ensure that we weren’t the lowest on the pecking order. Therefore, poking at the inherently unstable relationship between Balloon and Nickel was our surest bet disrupting their trio with Bot. However, witnessing the aftermath, even I was surprised at how quick their bond was to snap. I sense that if they cannot work this out soon, it will be their downfall.
Indigo: Ooh, spooky. Following all of the craziness in that last vote, do you respect Balloon’s decision for voting for you?
Candle: Yes and no. Yes because he made a strategic choice. Can’t hold it against him if you’re participating in a game like Inanimate Insanity. And no because part of me feels like he may have been swayed into it by a certain someone who is just as strategic.
Indigo: You made plenty of bold strategic decisions as well. How do you feel about the whole villain arc you went through? Did it feel good?
Candle: Goodness! Me, a villain? Was it really that bad of me to want to try and focus on my own needs for once? My teammates had all started to find their own paths, and I felt like I was soon to be left behind. Such as the nature of the game. If being there for myself when I felt lost makes me a villain, then I guess it was an arc for me.
Indigo: I hear you. Speaking of villains, to wrap this up, I’d love to know how it feels to have left Silver Spoon behind. He was very sad to see you were eliminated, not sure if he’s the same.
Candle: Was he now? Interesting. Perhaps we will need to reconnect regarding that.
Indigo: Wonderfully vague as always! Thank you, Candle! Best of luck whenever the rejoin challenge comes along. And to our Inanimate audience, a very special thank you for all of your questions. Curiosity is a powerful thing! Be sure to subscribe to catch the next opportunity to have your question read. This has been Indigo Zircon Rose with IPR, signing off!

Rule No. 5: You don’t waste good. And there is a lot of good stuff to be enjoyed as NCIS marks its 20th anniversary this month.
On Monday, Sept. 25, CBS is officially celebrating “NCIS Day” — exactly 20 years (…plus two days) after the JAG spinoff made its broadcast debut. The well-watched NCIS mothership has aired 459 episodes to date, and with all offshoots (including NCIS: Sydney) combined, the franchise will reach a milestone 1,000th episode (!) during NCIS’ 21st season (premiere date TBD). If there is a giant “1,000” cake, I demand a slice.
TVLine has exclusive details on all that “NCIS Day” will entail:
A mini-marathon airing Monday, Sept. 25 and kicking off with the first NCIS episode, featuring the original cast and back when the show was called [Takes deep breath] “Navy NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service.” (Before you “Well, actually…” me –yes, NCIS technically launched via a backdoor pilot in the Season 8 JAG episodes “Ice Queen” and “Meltdown.”) All three mini-marathon episodes are detailed below; get an exclusive first look at the promo up above.
youtube
The debut of CBS’ “social take” on the Bandium app that Gary Cole’s Special Agent Alden Parker introduced to the team in Season 19 (as revisited in the video clip directly above). CBS’ version of Bandium will be accessed through an opt-in messenger feature on Instagram and Facebook, allowing “special agent fans at home” to receive exclusive content, personalized shareable content, special announcements and more. (Starting Sept. 18, sign up early using these Facebook and Instagram links.)
An opportunity for fans to take 20% off NCIS merchandise at ParamountShop.com, using the code NCIS20 at checkout from Sept. 7 through Oct. 2. (There will also be an on-air QR/discount code displayed periodically during the NCIS marathon so fans can scan and shop.)
And as you may have already noticed out there on social media, CBS has launched a new joint @NCISverse handle across all of the franchise’s social media platforms.

‘NCIS DAY’ MINI-MARATHON DETAILS
Monday, Sept. 25 at 8/7c — “Yankee White” (Season 1, Episode 1) In the series’ premiere episode, NCIS Special Agents Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) and Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) and medical examiner Dr. “Ducky” Mallard (David McCallum) arrive on Air Force One to investigate what initially appears to be a death by natural causes. But their investigation is hampered by inter-agency squabbles with the FBI and Secret Service, each believing that they should be the primary investigating unit. Gibbs cunningly gets control of the case from the others, but still has to go head-to-head with Secret Service Agent Kate Todd (Sasha Alexander).
Monday, Sept. 25 at 9 pm — “SWAK” (Season 2, Episode 22) When a letter sealed with a kiss is delivered to NCIS, Tony assumes it’s for him and opens it, only to release a mysterious powder into the NCIS squad room. Gibbs and the team are forced into quarantine in the NCIS autopsy room pending the results of tests to identify the strange powder. As Abby (Pauley Perrette) discovers the substance is a genetically altered version of the plague, Tony and Kate are placed in a bio-hazard isolation ward for fear of exposure. Gibbs and McGee (Sean Murray), meanwhile, race to track down who sent the letter before the deadly plague wreaks more havoc.
Monday, Sept. 25 at 10 pm — “All Hands” (Season 19, Episode 11) After a civilian research vessel in the North Atlantic picks up a small boat of wounded Navy officers, Special Agent Parker (Gary Cole) and his NCIS team arrive on the ship and are forced to hide after discovering terrorists on board. Also, Special Agent Knight (Katrina Law) takes a paper doll with her on the mission to capture photos for her niece’s grade school class. Martha Mitchell directed the episode from a script by Christopher J. Waild.
How will YOU be celebrating “NCIS Day”? Anyone want to go caroling door-to-door with me, maybe stumble across an ill-fated petty officer along the way…?

After what felt like the geologic age of the Jurassic, I finally settled on a new smartwatch. But man, the odyssey of navigating that labyrinth of options nearly liquefied my brain into a puddle of overcooked eggs. I scoured all the big-name retailer sites, but half of those product pages looked like they were jammed with counterfeit junk pumped out of a Chinese warehouse staffed by iPods assembled from melted Croc shoes.
Everywhere I clicked, Huawei kept jamming its shiny new Watch Fit 3 in my face through ads. But then I'd see headlines about Western nations trying to ban the company. Clearly, there were geopolitical overtones I wasn't grasping. So I hit up YouTube University to earn my doctoral degree in Huawei Truthology from some amateur reviewer's unboxing video.
Turns out the Fit 3 is basically an Apple Watch rip-off, but at least it's cheaper than getting scammed by an Apple Genius into buying $600 worth of proprietary dongles. Except to even set this thing up, you can't just download the app through the Play Store like a normal human being. Nope, you have to pull some spy movie shit and use your phone to scan a QR code that appears on the watch's tiny screen to secretly download their shady APK file direct from Beijing.
Then it force-installs some 'Sister App' that starts dropping bloatware landmines all over your phone's operating system at random. Like, what the absolute.... hell? Yeah, ban those Communist tentacle-code overlords from the free world of wearable tech. Where's the Change.org petition to digitally rendition Huawei into a bottomless pit?
The more reputable Withings brand fell out of contention because they've gone full MailChimp rapscallion by holding all your health data for ransom through mandatory subscriptions. Sorry, but I don't need wireless EKG readings psyching me out about having my mom's AFIB condition when actual cardiologists would just ignore that data anyway, according to Dr. Mike from whatever medical TikTok channel he's on.
I just wanted something simple to track cycling, steps, elevation gained while I trekked up the Rocky Mountains, and phone notifications without having to pull out my actual phone like some Boomer with a belt-clipped Samsung Jitterbug. I don't need Dick Tracy video calling or sleep tracking to gaslight me about my night terrors.
In the end, after scrutinizing all the evidence like I was presenting it to 12 Angry Men, I ordered the Garmin Venu SQ 2. Could've saved a few bucks through one of Amazon's third-party sellers, but their listings always smell shadier than a truckstop urinal cake. This one guy claimed he had an "opened but never used" unit he bought "by accident as a gift" and was trying to unload it at a steep discount. Yeah, because stumbling into purchasing a £199 smartwatch by pure accident happens all the time, and there's definitely no chance it's a reboxed return or something he ripped off and is fencing on eBay.
No thanks, Slick Rick. I'll pay the premium to a legit retailer and pick it up from their storefront today after eviscerating the last few hours of my workday. Man, buying something simple shouldn't require a six-month term paper's worth of research, but I guess that's just Life in the 21st Century Hellscape we've made for ourselves.

Recruitment in the Age of the Metaverse: Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality in Hiring
The way we work and interact is one of the many elements of our life that are fast changing due to the metaverse, a virtual realm that blends digital and physical realities. The potential of this technology to completely transform the hiring process is among its most fascinating uses. At the vanguard of this shift are virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), which provide creative solutions for businesses and job seekers alike. This article will examine the advantages, difficulties, and potential effects of VR and AR on hiring practices.
The Rise of VR and AR in Recruitment
Virtual reality and augmented reality have found extensive uses in sectors including healthcare, education, and real estate, and are no longer limited to gaming and entertainment. The recruiting industry is currently using these technologies to improve the employment process since they are constantly searching for new and creative methods to draw in and assess potential.
Virtual Reality in Recruitment
With virtual reality (VR), users can engage with a computer-generated world in a completely immersive setting. Virtual reality (VR) can be used in recruitment to hold virtual job fairs, replicate workplaces, and offer immersive training sessions.
Virtual Job Fairs: Conventional employment fairs can restrict participation owing to regional limitations and demand extensive logistical organisation. Virtual reality job fairs remove these obstacles by enabling applicants to participate from any location in the globe. In addition to attending presentations and engaging with recruiters, they can take part in virtual tours of the business.
Work Environment Simulations: Providing a realistic work environment preview to candidates is one of the recruitment problems. Virtual reality (VR) may replicate routine duties and work environments, giving candidates a deeper comprehension of the position and the company environment. This aids in expectation management and may increase job satisfaction and retention rates.
Immersive Training: Training and onboarding new hires can be expensive and time-consuming processes. Virtual reality provides an answer by producing realistic training programs that are repeatable as often as required. This is especially helpful for jobs like emergency response or industrial operations that need practical experience.
Augmented Reality in Recruitment
Augmented Reality (AR) improves the user's perspective of their surroundings by superimposing digital information over the real world. AR has applications in recruitment, including interactive job ads, improved candidate evaluations, and online interviews.
Interactive Job Advertisements: Candidates may have an interactive experience with job ads that are AR-enabled. Using an augmented reality app or scanning a QR code, candidates can watch films, 3D models, and other interesting job-related content. This draws attention and offers a more profound comprehension of the function.
Enhanced Candidate Assessments: With AR, interactive tests that measure a candidate's abilities in a practical setting can be developed. In technical professions, for instance, candidates can interact with a virtual replica of equipment to show off their technical expertise and problem-solving abilities.
Virtual Interviews: Even though video interviews are already typical, augmented reality (AR) can make them more engaging. As part of virtual group activities, candidates can showcase their work using 3D models, and even show off their abilities in a simulated setting.
Benefits of VR and AR in Recruitment
Using VR and AR in the hiring process has several advantages for both companies and applicants.
Expanded Employer Reach: Virtual reality and augmented reality technologies remove regional boundaries, giving businesses access to a worldwide talent pool. This is especially helpful for positions that are difficult to fill locally.
Cost-effectiveness: Online job fairs, role-plays, and training courses can cut down on travel and venue costs as well as the amount of time needed for in-person interviews.
Enhanced Candidate Experience: VR and AR can give candidates a more immersive and interactive experience, which can increase their level of engagement and enjoyment during the recruitment process. This might draw in top people and strengthen the employer's brand.
Data-Driven Insights: These tools monitor how candidates engage and perform in virtual tests, giving hiring managers useful information.
For Candidates
Convenience: Candidates don't have to take time off work or travel because they can take part in recruitment events from the comfort of their homes.
Realistic Job Previews: Virtual reality and augmented reality offer a more realistic portrayal of the position and workplace, assisting applicants in determining whether or not they are a good fit for the position.
Skill Demonstration: Rather than depending only on resumes and interviews, candidates can demonstrate their skills and talents in a real-world setting using interactive tests.
The Future of Recruitment in the Metaverse
The use of VR and AR in recruiting is probably going to get more complex as technology develops. We anticipate seeing an increase in the number of businesses utilising these technologies to produce captivating and immersive hiring processes.
AI Integration: Adding AI to VR and AR can improve the hiring process even more. While VR and AR can provide more individualised and adaptable experiences, AI can analyse candidate interactions and give recruiters insights.
Integration of Remote Work: As remote work becomes more popular, VR and AR can be used to build virtual workspaces and offices that let applicants experience the company's remote work culture firsthand.
Beyond hiring, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) can be utilised for continuous learning and development, giving staff members access to chances for on-going training in a virtual setting.
In summary, the metaverse—fueled by VR and AR—has the enormous potential to revolutionise the hiring process. Through the creation of more immersive, dynamic, and captivating experiences, these technologies can assist businesses in identifying and evaluating top talent while giving applicants a realistic look at  what their future responsibilities will entail. Adopting these technologies going ahead will be essential to maintaining competitiveness in the constantly changing labour market.

Seamless Entertainment: How to Transfer Your DVR Shows to Mobile Devices
Tumblr media
In today's fast-paced world, the ability to watch your favorite TV shows and movies on the go is not just a luxury but a necessity. With the advancement of technology, transferring DVR shows to mobile devices has become easier than ever. This guide will walk you through the steps to seamlessly Transfer your DVR recordings to your mobile device, ensuring that your entertainment is always at your fingertips.
Understanding DVR and Mobile Compatibility
Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) have revolutionized how we watch television, allowing us to record, pause, and rewind live TV. However, DVRs are traditionally tied to your home entertainment system, limiting the portability of your recorded content. Fortunately, many DVR manufacturers have recognized the need for mobile compatibility, providing various methods to transfer or stream recorded shows to your smartphone or tablet.
Choosing the Right Equipment
Before you begin the transfer process, ensure that you have the necessary equipment. Here's a checklist to get you started:
Compatible DVR: Ensure that your DVR supports mobile transfer. Popular brands like TiVo, Dish Network, and Comcast Xfinity offer models with mobile transfer capabilities.
Mobile Device: A smartphone or tablet with sufficient storage and the ability to install the necessary apps.
Wi-Fi Connection: A stable Wi-Fi connection is essential for transferring large video files without interruptions.
Relevant Apps: Most DVRs require a specific app to manage transfers. Download the app associated with your DVR brand from your device's app store.
Start Transferring Your Shows Now! (877) 471-4808
Step-by-Step Guide to Transferring DVR Shows
Step 1: Connect Your Devices
First, ensure that your DVR and mobile device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. This network connection allows the devices to communicate with each other for the transfer process.
Step 2: Download and Install the App
Download the app that corresponds with your DVR brand. For example:
TiVo: TiVo App
Dish Network: DISH Anywhere App
Comcast Xfinity: Xfinity Stream App
Once downloaded, install the app and sign in with your account credentials.
Step 3: Pair Your Devices
Open the app on your mobile device and follow the instructions to pair it with your DVR. This usually involves entering a code displayed on your TV screen or scanning a QR code.
Step 4: Select Your Recordings
Within the app, navigate to the list of recorded shows on your DVR. Select the shows or movies you want to transfer to your mobile device.
Step 5: Initiate the Transfer
Most apps will have a download or transfer button. Tap this button to begin transferring the selected recordings to your mobile device. The transfer time will vary depending on the file size and your Wi-Fi speed.
Managing Storage and Quality
Transferring high-quality video files can consume a significant amount of storage space on your mobile device. Here are some tips to manage storage effectively:
Adjust Video Quality: Some apps allow you to choose the video quality before downloading. Lowering the quality can save storage space and speed up the transfer process.
Monitor Available Space: Regularly check the available storage on your device to ensure you have enough space for new recordings.
Delete After Viewing: Once you've watched a show, delete it from your device to free up space for new content.
Streaming vs. Downloading
In addition to downloading, some DVR apps offer the option to stream recordings directly to your mobile device. Streaming can be a great alternative if you have a reliable internet connection and prefer not to use up storage space. Here’s a comparison of the two methods:
Downloading:
Pros: Watch offline, no buffering issues.
Cons: Takes up storage space, requires time to transfer.
Streaming:
Pros: No storage space needed, instant access.
Cons: Requires constant internet connection, potential buffering.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Connection Problems
If your devices aren't connecting, ensure both are on the same Wi-Fi network and that your internet connection is stable. Restarting your router and devices can also help.
Transfer Failures
If a transfer fails, check your available storage space and ensure your mobile device's battery is sufficiently charged. Restarting the app and trying the transfer again can often resolve the issue.
App Crashes
Ensure that your app and device's operating system are up to date. If the app continues to crash, reinstalling it may solve the problem.
Future of Mobile DVR Compatibility
As technology advances, the integration between DVRs and mobile devices will continue to improve. We can expect faster transfer speeds, better storage management options, and enhanced streaming capabilities. Future developments might include more intuitive user interfaces, AI-driven content recommendations, and even cloud-based DVR solutions, eliminating the need for physical hardware altogether.
Conclusion
Transferring DVR shows to your mobile device is a convenient way to ensure your favorite entertainment is always accessible. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can enjoy your recorded shows anytime, anywhere. Whether you choose to download or stream, managing your DVR content on the go has never been easier. Embrace flexibility and enjoy seamless entertainment wherever life takes you.

Say goodbye to standard security for smartphones (you need this instead) - CyberTalk
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By Zahier Madhar, Lead Security Engineer and Office of the CTO, Check Point.
Smartphones play a pivotal role in all of our lives. In a way, smartphones today are a sort of a diary, storing pictures, organizing them and displaying them in a story telling modality. Smartphones are much more than a piece of technology that allows you to make phone calls and send text messages.
Many people, before they go to bed, they have their smartphones in their hands; they are getting the latest updates, finishing some work, or watching a movie or video shorts. And once they wake up, the first activity of the day consists of picking up the smartphone, checking the time and seeing about whether or not they have missed any updates.
Smartphones: dual uses
That very same smartphone is often used for business purposes as well; such attending or hosting meetings, emails and managing an agenda. The dual-purpose dimension is also the case with a laptop (used for both private and business purposes). The biggest different between a laptop and a smartphone is that a smartphone is always turned on and connected to the internet, while a laptop, not-so-much.
A second difference is that a laptop is managed and has a threat prevention application on it. In contrast, smartphones are, in many cases, managed by the organization but not secured by a threat prevention application.  However, the smartphone contains the same mix of private data and business related data as the laptop. See the problem?
The bakery next door
In a previous Cyber Talk thought leadership article, I talked about the bakery next door. The bakery next door can use a smartphone to get the status of the ovens, but also to control the ovens. Imagine if the baker’s smartphone were hacked and hackers took control over the most important ovens. This would impact the bakery’s output immediately. This is not just a theory; this could happen. Although this example is small-scale, the implications are immense; lack of smartphone security can jeopardize a business.
History of mobile threats
Malware targeting smartphones is not new. The difference today compared with 20 years ago is that the smartphone holds sensitive data; sensitive data on private and business level.
The question is why do organization fail to install mobile anti-malware on the smartphones? I believe it has to do with awareness, costs, and user experience or they think it is not needed (especially for iOS users).
iOS cyber security
Despite popular belief, it is possible to install malware on iOS devices and since the EU’s Digital Markets Act of 2022 came about, Apple has been forced to allow also apps outside the App store on its phones.
But regulating smartphones based on unified endpoint management and mobile device management is not enough. The reason why is simple: These security tools do not contain security controls for inspecting apps, network connections and interfaces in regards to malicious behavior.
Malware prevention
Let’s get back to the bakery next door. The baker uses his smartphone for daily business (baking bread-related tasks) and also for personal use. To avoid getting infected by malware, the baker does not install apps outside of the App store, does not scan QR codes and does not connect to public wifi.
As with his laptop, he makes sure that the smartphone and his apps are always updated with the latest software releases. Still, this is not enough. The baker won’t successfully avoid SMS phishing, malicious websites and network related attacks by taking those steps. To truly advance his security, the baker needs to install a mobile security solution that protects the smartphone from mobile security risks.
The baker is lucky because he relies on a cyber security vendor partner to deliver a platform and he can simply apply mobile security, in addition to the other security controls that have been delivered, through the platform.
In other words, what the baker has is a consolidated cyber security platform with threat prevention, ensuring that his business won’t be disrupted by opportunistic hackers.
Key takeaways
As I mentioned earlier, smartphones have become day-to-day essentials, shaping our social interactions and business operations. However, they also present security risks, as they contain sensitive personal and business information. Here are some tips to enhance smartphone security:
1. Stick to official app stores for downloading apps.
2. Avoid connecting to public wifi networks.
3. Consider installing a mobile threat prevention application.
As a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), it’s crucial to treat smartphones with the same level of security awareness as laptops. Incorporate them into your awareness campaigns and ensure they are regularly updated with the latest patches.
Implement mobile threat prevention solutions like Harmony Mobile from Check Point to serve as a security enforcement point for your Unified Endpoint Management (UEM) or Mobile Device Management (MDM) system.
These measures will enhance security maturity and provide visibility into potential malicious activities on mobile devices within your organization.

Project Development 1: (Journey through the digital media)
After Completing the weekly projects, I chose the second week project for the further development. First, I was planned to make a motion graphics video to present the different stages of our media timeline. When I presented my idea Ian gave feedback that I have to add more to engage or do something different for the making the audience to interact with that.
I have already created the scenes and the sketch for the video. I began to think what should I do and finally I decided to make some VR or AR artefact to my project. In my tutorial session Xinge also gave more possible Idea to create more engaging to audience.
So, I borrowed a VR headset from our university loan store. But the attempt was failed because my laptop doesn’t support the VR headset. Then I changed my plan to do AR artefact.
youtube
After scanning the QR code, it will redirect to the app Aero Viewer, and we can see the output as shown below.
While comparing my weekly project I created different scenes to develop the idea as a motion graphics video.
Tumblr media
I created a rough sketch for the scenes.
Then I sketched each scene in ‘Sketchbook’ App.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was impressed by the art works who was created by Arosh Thevadathil, Known as Doodle Muni. Which I have already mentioned in my weekly project blog. His art work have unique style of drawing and that way of approach was so influenced me to make scenes.
While I went to London, I saw the Butterfly trail in Tottenham court road. That artefact impressed me and influenced a lot to create my own work model.
I used After effects for adding some motions to the scene.

I used Adobe Premiere Pro for joining these clips and added some background music for that.
Tumblr media
For the AR part I used Adobe Aero to create the AR elements. I downloaded some 3d models and created a scene. I added Newspaper, Radio, Old TV, Computer, Mobile Phone and VR headset into scene and arranged in an order.
Tumblr media
This Project took almost 2 to 3 weeks to complete. I spent more time to resolve the issue with VR headset and but after finding the reason that my laptop doesn’t support the VR headset I chose the AR for immersive experience for the audience.
The other challenges I faced was the software Adobe aero was not stable in Windows and android phones. Maybe it is because of the developing stage of the software. But I managed to take output in my friend’s iPhone and it was perfect Output.
I am happy to say that I have learnt new skills like AR and some basics in After Effects.
